Copper Dithiocarbamates: Coordination Chemistry and Applications in Materials Science, Biosciences and Beyond

Synthesis and theoretical study of a mixed-ligand indium(III) complex for fabrication of β-In2S3 thin films via chemical vapor deposition

Two new heteroleptic indium aminothiolate compounds [InClSC2H4N(Me)SC2H4]3[1] and [InSC2H4N(Me)SC2H4(C8H5F3NO)] [2] were synthesized by in situ salt metathesis reaction involving indium trichloride, aminothiol, and N,O-β-heteroarylalkenol ligands. The complexes were subsequently purified and thoroughly characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, elemental studies, mass spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction single crystal analysis that showed a trigonal bipyramidal coordination of In(III) in both complexes. Thermogravimetric analysis of [1] revealed a multistep decomposition pathway and the formation of In2S3 at 350 °C, which differed from the pattern of [2] due to the lower thermal stability of [1]. Compound [2] exhibited a three-step decomposition process, resulting in the formation of In2S3 at 300 °C. The Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) experiment involving compound [2] was conducted on the FTO substrate, resulting in the production of singular-phase In2S3 deposits. A comprehensive characterization of these deposits, including crystal structure analysis via X-ray diffraction (XRD), and surface topography examination through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been completed. The presence of In-S units was also supported by the Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) of the as-deposited films. Moreover, the electronic structure and thermal properties of compound [2] were investigated through DFT calculations. Electron density localization analysis revealed that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) exhibited dense concentration at the aminothiolate moiety of the complex, while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) predominantly resided at the N,O-β-heteroarylalkenolate ligand. Furthermore, our computational investigation has validated the formation of indium sulfide by elucidating an intermediate state, effectively identified through EI-MS analysis, as one of the plausible pathways for obtaining In2S3. This intermediate state comprises the aminothiolate ligand (LNS) coordinated with indium metal.

Synthesis, characterization and in vitro cytotoxicity of gallium(III)-dithiocarbamate complexes

A library of homoleptic mononuclear Ga(III) complexes of the general formula [Ga(DTC)3], where DTC is an alicyclic or a linear dithiocarbamate chelator, is reported. The complexes were prepared in high yields starting from Ga(NO3)3·6H2O and fully characterized by elemental analysis and IR and NMR spectroscopy. Crystals of five of these complexes were obtained. The antitumor activity of the newly synthesized compounds against a panel of human cancer cell lines was evaluated. The chemical nature of the DTC does not have a marked impact on the structural features of the final compound. X-ray crystal structure analyses revealed that all these complexes have a trigonal prismatic geometry with three identical chelating DTCs coordinating the Ga(III) ion. It is noteworthy that in complex 22, [Ga(NHEt)3] (NHEt = N-ethyldithiocarbamate), the asymmetric unit is formed by two independent and structurally different molecules. Cellular studies showed that all the synthesized Ga-DTC complexes exhibit marked cytotoxic activity, even against human colon cancer cells that are less sensitive to cisplatin. Among the tested compounds, 6 ([Ga(CEPipDTC)3], CEPipDTC = (ethoxycarbonyl)-piperidinedithiocarbamate) and 21 ([Ga(Pr-13)3], PR13 = 4 and N-(2-ethoxy-2-oxoethyl)-N-methyldithiocarbamate) are very promising derivatives, but they have no selectivity towards cancer cells. Nevertheless, the obtained data provide a foundation for developing gallium-dithiocarbamate complexes as anticancer agents.

Metal-free trifunctionalization of phenylacetylenes: an efficient one-pot two-step synthesis of gem-bis(dithiocarbamates)

The synthesis of phenacyl-bis(dithiocarbamates) has been reported by metal-free trifunctionalization of phenylacetylene systems by following a one-pot two-step strategy. Phenyl acetylene undergoes molecular bromine-mediated oxidative bromination followed by nucleophilic substitution with the freshly prepared dithiocarbamate salt which is prepared by the prompt reaction of amine and CS₂ in the presence of triethylamine base. A series of gem-bis(dithiocarbamates) are prepared using various secondary amines and phenylacetylene systems containing different substituents.

Aβ-Targeting Bifunctional Chelators (BFCs) for Potential Therapeutic and PET Imaging Applications

Currently, more than 55 million people live with dementia worldwide, and there are nearly 10 million new cases every year. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease resulting in personality changes, cognitive impairment, memory loss, and physical disability. Diagnosis of AD is often missed or delayed in clinical practice due to the fact that cognitive deterioration occurs already in the later stages of the disease. Thus, methods to improve early detection would provide opportunities for early treatment of disease. All FDA-approved PET imaging agents for Aβ plaques use short-lived radioisotopes such as ¹¹C (t_1/2 = 20.4 min) and ¹⁸F (t_1/2 = 109.8 min), which limit their widespread use. Thus, a novel metal-based imaging agent for visualization of Aβ plaques is of interest, due to the simplicity of its synthesis and the longer lifetimes of its constituent isotopes. We have previously summarized a metal-containing drug for positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging of Alzheimer's disease. In this review, we have summarized a recent advance in design of Aβ-targeting bifunctional chelators for potential therapeutic and PET imaging applications, reported after our previous review.

Domino assembly of dithiocarbamates via Cu-catalyzed denitrogenative thiolation of iodotriazole-based diazo precursors

An efficient domino approach to assemble benzoxazoles and anthranilamides bearing dithiocarbamate moieties has been developed. The proposed route represents a Cu-catalyzed three-component reaction between readily available 5-iodo-1,2,3-triazoles, amines, and CS₂. The cascade transformation is based on a denitrogenative coupling of in situ formed dithiocarbamic acids with diazo intermediates, generated via annulation-triggered triazole ring-opening. This method is applicable to nucleophilic secondary amines and features good functional group compatibility.

Synthesis of ternary copper antimony sulfide via solventless thermolysis or aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition using metal dithiocarbamates

Copper antimony sulfide (Cu-Sb-S) has recently been proposed as an attractive alternative photovoltaic material due to the earth-abundant and non-toxic nature of the elements, high absorption coefficients and band gaps commensurate with efficient harvesting of solar photonic flux across multiple phases of Cu-Sb-S. These materials are therefore highly desirable and sustainable and scalable deposition techniques to produce them are of interest. In this paper, we demonstrate two facile, low-temperature and inexpensive techniques (solventless thermolysis and aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD)) for the preparation of binary digenite (Cu_1.8S), chalcocite (Cu₂S) and stibnite (Sb₂S₃) and several phases of ternary copper-antimony-sulfide (Cu_2xSb_2(1−x)S_y, where 0 ≤ x ≤ 1). It was found that by utilising these different techniques and varying the ratio of Cu:Sb, pure phases of ternary chalcostibite (CuSbS₂), fematinite (Cu₃SbS₄) and tetrahedrite (Cu₁₂Sb₄S₁₃) can be achieved. Two single-source precursors were investigated for this purpose, namely the diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) complexes of copper and antimony Cu(DTC)₂ and Sb(DTC)₃. These were decomposed both individually (to produce binary materials) and combined (to produce ternary materials) at different ratios. From the solventless thermolysis and AACVD methods, either particulate or thin film material was formed, respectively. These materials were then characterised by powder XRD, SEM, EDX and Raman spectroscopies to determine the crystalline phase, material morphology and uniformity of elemental composition. This analysis demonstrated that as the Cu-content increases, the phase of the ternary material changes from chalcostibite (CuSbS₂) and fematinite (Cu₃SbS₄) at a low Cu:Sb ratio to tetrahedrite (Cu₁₂Sb₄S₁₃) at a high Cu:Sb ratio.

Supramolecular assembly and structural transformation of d10-metal complexes containing (aza-15-crown-5)dithiocarbamate

[Au(O4NCS2)]2 underwent structural transformation by heating to give [Au(O4NCS2)]6. Moreover, [Ag(O4NCS2)]n and [Cu(O4NCS2)]4 can be isolated, and notably [Cu(O4NCS2)]4 structurally transformed to [Cu(O4NCS2)]8 by heating can be also observed.
