Abstract
Fucoidans are a kind of naturally sulfated polysaccharides that are primarily derived from brown algae and marine invertebrates. They are mainly composed of L-fucose and sulphate group. In the past decades, fucoidans have been attracted much attention for its wide range of pharmacological activities. However, fucoidans are difficult to be absorbed due to their high molecular weight. Notably, low-molecular weight fucoidan (LMWF) and fuco-oligosaccharide are more readily absorbed and have equal or superior biological activities. Therefore, degradation of fucoidan has become a research hot spot in recent years. Presently, methods for fucoidan degradation primary include enzymatic degradation, chemical degradation, and physical degradation. Enzymatic degradation has advantages of mild hydrolysis conditions, good selectivity and few by-products. Chemical degradation is characterized by simple operation, low cost, and easy for industrial applications. This review article summarizes research progress on fucoidan-degrading enzymes, preparation of LMWF and fuco-oligosaccharides by enzymatic degradation, physical degradation, and chemical degradation, and biological activities of these products. This article provides information useful for chemists that are interested in preparation of LMWF and fuco-oligosaccharides, for pharmacologists that are devoted to develop fucoidan-derived bioactive molecules, and for manufacturers of fucoidan-derived products, thus promoting transformation of these products in food and pharmaceutical areas.

Abstract
Prokaryotic abundance and activity are commonly assessed by dividing them into two size-fractions: free-living and attached to particles. Nevertheless, organic matter, essential for the growth of heterotrophic prokaryotes, is present in the environment in a continuum of sizes, from purely dissolved to large particles. Therefore, defining the activity of the prokaryotic community would be more accurate by considering all the distinct size fractions. To achieve this, we measured prokaryotic abundance (PA), heterotrophic prokaryotic activity (as leucine incorporation) and extracellular enzyme activities at a coastal site in the NW Mediterranean Sea. We conducted measurements in both bulk seawater and size fractionated samples sequentially passing through 5 different filter types: 0.2-0.8-3-5-10 μm pore size. Our results indicate that the fraction <0.8 μm contained the highest percentage of cells (91.6 ± 1.1 %) and leucine incorporation rates (72.2 ± 3.5 %). Most of the extracellular enzyme activity appeared in the dissolved fraction (<0.2 μm; 19.8-79.4 %), yet the specific activity of the enzymes (per cell activity) was 100-1000 times higher in the particulate (>0.8 μm) than in the free-living (0.2-0.8 μm) fraction. The size fraction with highest specific activities for leucine incorporation and most of the enzyme activities (β-glucosidase, esterase, Leu-aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase) was the 5-10 μm fraction. In contrast, the higher specific chitobiase activity in the >10 μm fraction, suggests that the prokaryotic community colonizing large particles might be more specialized in the hydrolysis of organic matter of zooplanktonic origin than the community colonizing smaller particles.

Abstract
The use of ultrafiltration to isolate high molecular weight dissolved organic matter (HMWDOM) from seawater is a fundamental tool in the environmental organic chemist's toolbox. Yet, important characteristics of HMWDOM relevant to its origin and cycling, such as its molecular weight distribution, remain poorly defined. We used diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy coupled with mixed-mode chromatography to separate and characterize two major components of marine HMWDOM: acylpolysaccharides (APS) and high molecular weight humic substances (HS). The molecular weights (MWs) of APS and HS both fell within distinct, narrow envelopes; 2.0-16 kDa for APS and 0.9-6.5 kDa for HS. In water samples from the North Pacific Ocean the average MW of both components decreased with depth through the mesopelagic. However, the minimum MW of APS was >2 kDa, well above the molecular weight cutoff of the ultrafilter, suggesting APS removal processes below 2 kDa are highly efficient. The MW distribution of APS shows only small variations with depth, while the MW distribution of HS narrowed due to removal of HMW components. Despite the narrowing of the MW distribution, the concentration of HS did not decrease with depth between 15 and 915 m. This suggests that HMW HS produced in surface waters was either degraded into lower MW compounds without significant remineralization, or that HMW HS was remineralized but replaced by an additional source of HS in the mesopelagic ocean. Based on these results, we propose potential pathways for the production and removal of these major components of HMWDOM.

Abstract
Even though fungi are ubiquitous in the biosphere, the ecological knowledge of marine fungi remains rather rudimentary. Also, little is known about their tolerance to salinity and how it influences their activities. Extracellular enzymatic activities (EEAs) are widely used to determine heterotrophic microbes' enzymatic capabilities and substrate preferences. Five marine fungal species belonging to the most abundant pelagic phyla (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota) were grown under non-saline and saline conditions (0 g/L and 35 g/L, respectively). Due to their sensitivity and specificity, fluorogenic substrate analogues were used to determine hydrolytic activity on carbohydrates (β-glucosidase, β-xylosidase, and N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase); peptides (leucine aminopeptidase and trypsin); lipids (lipase); organic phosphorus (alkaline phosphatase), and sulfur compounds (sulfatase). Afterwards, kinetic parameters such as maximum velocity (Vmax) and half-saturation constant (Km) were calculated. All fungal species investigated cleaved these substrates, but some species were more efficient than others. Moreover, most enzymatic activities were reduced in the saline medium, with some exceptions like sulfatase. In non-saline conditions, the average Vmax ranged between 208.5 to 0.02 μmol/g biomass/h, and in saline conditions, 88.4 to 0.02 μmol/g biomass/h. The average Km ranged between 1553.2 and 0.02 μM with no clear influence of salinity. Taken together, our results highlight a potential tolerance of marine fungi to freshwater conditions and indicate that changes in salinity (due to freshwater input or evaporation) might impact their enzymatic activities spectrum and, therefore, their contribution to the oceanic elemental cycles.

Abstract
Fungi are ubiquitous organisms that secrete different enzymes to cleave large molecules into smaller ones so that can then be assimilated. Recent studies suggest that fungi are also present in the oceanic water column harboring the enzymatic repertoire necessary to cleave carbohydrates and proteins. In marine prokaryotes, the cell-free fraction is an important contributor to the oceanic extracellular enzymatic activities (EEAs), but the release of cell-free enzymes by marine fungi remains unknown. Here, to study the cell-free enzymatic activities of marine fungi and the potential influence of salinity on them, five strains of marine fungi that belong to the most abundant pelagic phyla (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota), were grown under non-saline and saline conditions (0 g/L and 35 g/L, respectively). The biomass was separated from the medium by filtration (0.2 μm), and the filtrate was used to perform fluorogenic enzymatic assays with substrate analogues of carbohydrates, lipids, organic phosphorus, sulfur moieties, and proteins. Kinetic parameters such as maximum velocity (Vmax) and half-saturation constant (Km) were obtained. The species studied were able to release cell-free enzymes, and this represented up to 85.1% of the respective total EEA. However, this differed between species and enzymes, with some of the highest contributions being found in those with low total EEA, with some exceptions. This suggests that some of these contributions to the enzymatic pool might be minimal compared to those with higher total EEA. Generally, in the saline medium, the release of cell-free enzymes degrading carbohydrates was reduced compared to the non-saline medium, but those degrading lipids and sulfur moieties were increased. For the remaining substrates, there was not a clear influence of the salinity. Taken together, our results suggest that marine fungi are potential contributors to the oceanic dissolved (i.e., cell-free) enzymatic pool. Our results also suggest that, under salinity changes, a potential effect of global warming, the hydrolysis of organic matter by marine fungal cell-free enzymes might be affected and hence, their potential contribution to the oceanic biogeochemical cycles.

Abstract
Most investigations into ocean ecology and biogeochemistry have tended to focus on marine bacteria, archaea, and protists, while pelagic fungi (mycoplankton) have traditionally been neglected and considered to reside only in association with benthic solid substrates. Nevertheless, recent studies have revealed that pelagic fungi are distributed ubiquitously throughout the water column in every ocean basin and play an active role in the degradation of organic matter and the cycling of nutrients. We review the current status of knowledge on the ecology of mycoplankton and highlight knowledge gaps and challenges. These findings underscore the need to recognize this neglected kingdom as significant contributors to the organic matter cycling and ecology of the oceans.
