Low-Temperature Self-Healing of a Microcapsule-Type Protective Coating

A simple fabrication of liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane coating for resisting ice adhesion

The rapid realization of efficient anti-icing coatings on diverse substrates is of vital value for practical applications. However, current approaches for rapid preparations of anti-icing coatings are still deficient regarding their surface universality and accessibility. Here, we report a simple processing approach to rapidly form icephobic liquid-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brushes on various substrates, including metals, ceramics, glass, and plastics. A poly(dimethylsiloxane), trimethoxysilane is applied as a reactant under the catalysis of a minimal amount of acid formed by hydrolysis of dichlorodimethylsilane. With such an advantage, this approach is approved to be applicable of coating metal surfaces with less corrosion. The distinctive flexibility of the PDMS chains provides a liquid-like property to the coating showing low contact angle hysteresis and ice adhesion strength. Notably, the ice adhesion strength remains similar across a wide temperature window, from -70 to -10 °C, with a value of 18.4 kPa. The PDMS brushes demonstrate perfect capability for resisting acid and alkali corrosions, ultra-violet degradation, and even tens of icing/deicing cycles. Moreover, the liquid-like coating can also form at supercooling conditions, such as -20 °C, and shows an outstanding anti-icing/deicing performance, which meets the in situ coating reformation requirement under extreme conditions when it is damaged. This instantly forming anti-icing material will benefit from resisting instantaneous ice accretion on surfaces under extremely cold conditions.

Self-healing waterborne polyurethane coatings with high transparence and haze via cellulose nanocrystal stabilized linseed oil Pickering emulsion

Protection coatings with self-healing ability can significantly enhance their anti-corrosion properties and service life. In this study, self-healing waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coatings with high transparence and haze were facile fabricated via cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) stabilized linseed oil (LO) Pickering emulsion. Sustainable CNCs displayed outstanding emulsifying ability and stability to stabilize LO Pickering emulsion. The size of LO Pickering emulsion droplets decreases with the CNC concentration, while the emulsion fraction and surface coverage by CNCs increase with CNC concentration, leading to a more stable Pickering emulsion. The self-healing rates of WPU coatings at varied time, temperature, CNC and catalyst concentration were investigated. Higher temperature, larger emulsion droplets, and with driers employed as catalysts generally lead to faster self-healing rate. The WPU self-healing coatings displayed much better abrasion resistance and mechanical properties than pristine WPU due to the incorporation of CNCs. Moreover, the WPU self-healing coatings show a high transparence and haze due to light scattering, and their applications as coatings of lamp covers and glass to achieve uniform light distribution and privacy protection with high light transmission were further demonstrated.

Shape-Memory and Self-Healing Polymers Based on Dynamic Covalent Bonds and Dynamic Noncovalent Interactions: Synthesis, Mechanism, and Application

Shape-memory and self-healing polymers have been a hotspot of research in the field of smart polymers in the past decade. Under external stimulation, shape-memory and self-healing polymers can complete programed shape transformation, and they can spontaneously repair damage, thereby extending the life of the materials. In this review, we focus on the progress in polymers with shape-memory and self-healing properties in the past decade. The physical or chemical changes in the materials during the occurrence of shape memory as well as self-healing were analyzed based on the polymer molecular structure. We classified the polymers and discussed the preparation methods for shape-memory and self-healing polymers based on the dynamic interactions which can make the polymers exhibit self-healing properties including dynamic covalent bonds (DA reaction, disulfide exchange reaction, imine exchange reaction, alkoxyamine exchange reaction, and boronic acid ester exchange reaction) and dynamic noncovalent interactions (crystallization, hydrogen bonding, ionic interaction, metal coordination interaction, host-guest interactions, and hydrophobic interactions) and their corresponding triggering conditions. In addition, we discussed the advantages and the mechanism that the shape-memory property promotes self-healing in polymers, as well as the future trends in shape-memory and self-healing polymers.

Challenges and Opportunities of Self-Healing Polymers and Devices for Extreme and Hostile Environments

Engineering materials and devices can be damaged during their service life as a result of mechanical fatigue, punctures, electrical breakdown, and electrochemical corrosion. This damage can lead to unexpected failure during operation, which requires regular inspection, repair, and replacement of the products, resulting in additional energy consumption and cost. During operation in challenging, extreme, or harsh environments, such as those encountered in high or low temperature, nuclear, offshore, space, and deep mining environments, the robustness and stability of materials and devices are extremely important. Over recent decades, significant effort has been invested into improving the robustness and stability of materials through either structural design, the introduction of new chemistry, or improved manufacturing processes. Inspired by natural systems, the creation of self-healing materials has the potential to overcome these challenges and provide a route to achieve dynamic repair during service. Current research on self-healing polymers remains in its infancy, and self-healing behavior under harsh and extreme conditions is a particularly untapped area of research. Here, the self-healing mechanisms and performance of materials under a variety of harsh environments are discussed. An overview of polymer-based devices developed for a range of challenging environments is provided, along with areas for future research.

Recently Emerging Nanotechnological Advancements in Polymer Nanocomposite Coatings for Anti-corrosion, Anti-fouling and Self-healing

Recent nanotechnological advancements have enabled novel innovations in protective polymer nanocomposites (PNC) coatings for anti-corrosion, anti-fouling and self-healing services on material surfaces. Nanotechnology encompases research, manufacturing, and application of nanoparticulate architectures, tubular structures, sheets or plates exhibiting sizes below 100 nanometers (nm) in at least a single dimension. Inclusions of nanoparticles into organic entities have demonstrated enhanced properties essential for attainiment of aesthetics, anti-corrosion, thermal stability for high-temperature performances, mechanical strength essential for resisting coating deterioration in harsh environments, nano-architectural cross-linking capable of hindering penetration of corrosive, and biofouling entities. Unlike previously published literature, this paper elucidates very recently emerging important advancements in novel techniques utilized in developing PNC coatings for applications in aerospace, packaging, automotive, biomedicine, maritime, and oil and gas industries for attaining superior anti-fouling, anti-corrosion, and self-healing behaviors on critical material surfaces. Emerging market structures and novel applications are also presented.

Research on the Single Grit Scratching Process of Oxygen-Free Copper (OFC)

Single grit scratching is a basic form of material removal for many processes, such as grinding single point diamond turning and coating bonding performance tests. It has been widely used in the study of micro-scale and nano-scale material removal mechanisms. In this study, single grit linearly loading scratching tests were carried out on a scratching tester. A Rockwell indenter made of natural diamond was selected as the tool used, and the material of the workpiece was oxygen-free copper. Scratch topography was measured using a super-depth microscope to analyze the material deformation of the scratching process. A single grit scratching simulation has been developed by AdvantEdge™ to comprehensively study the material deformation of scratching processes. A material constitutive model and friction model were acquired using a quasi-static uniaxial compression experiment and a reciprocating friction test, respectively. These two models were used as the input models in the finite simulations. The simulated scratching forces aligned well with the experimental scratching forces, which verified the precision of the simulation model. Since only the scratching force could be obtained in the scratching experiment, the plastic strain, material flow, and residual stress of the scratching were further analyzed using simulations. The results showed that the plastic strain of the workpiece increased with the increase in scratching depth, and further analysis showed that the workpiece surface was distributed with residual compressive stress and the sub-surface was distributed with residual tensile stress in single grit scratching.

Phase Transformation Induced Self-Healing Behavior of Al-Ag Alloy

Self-healing alloys are promising materials that can decrease the consequences of accidents. To detect crack formation in a material is simple task that can be performed by e.g., sonic or ultrasound detection, but it is not always possible to immediately replace the damaged parts. In this situation, it is very advantageous to have the chance to heal the crack during operation, which can be done e.g., by annealing. In this paper, self-healing behavior was proven by TEM (Transmission electron microscope) observation of crack healing after annealing. The crack was observed in the rapidly solidified Al-30Ag alloy with non-equilibrium phase composition formed by a minor amount of Ag₂Al and a supersaturated solid solution of Ag in an fcc-Al matrix (fcc = face centered cubic). After annealing at 450 °C, equilibrium phase composition was obtained by forming a higher amount of Ag₂Al. This phase transformation did not allow the crack to be healed. Subsequent annealing at 550 °C caused recrystallization to a supersaturated solid solution of Ag in fcc-Al, followed by a return to the mixture of fcc-Al and Ag₂Al by cooling, and this process was accompanied by the closing of the crack. This observation proved the self-healing possibilities of the Ag₂Al phase. Practical application of this self-healing behavior could be achieved through the dispersion of fine Ag₂Al particles in a structural material, which will enrich the material with self-healing properties.
