A New Method Combining Finite Element Analysis and Digital Image Correlation to Assess Macroscopic Mechanical Properties of Dentin

Which dentine analogue material can replace human dentine for crown fatigue test?

OBJECTIVE

To seek dentine analogue materials in combined experimental, analytical, and numerical approaches on the mechanical properties and fatigue behaviours that could replace human dentine in a crown fatigue laboratory test.

METHODS

A woven glass fibre-filled epoxy (NEMA grade G10; G10) and a glass fibre-reinforced polyamide-nylon (30% glass fibre reinforced polyamide-nylon 6,6; RPN) were investigated and compared with human dentine (HD). Flexural strength and elastic modulus (n = 10) were tested on beam-shaped specimens via three-point bending, while indentation hardness (n = 3) was tested after fracture. Abutment substrates of G10, RPN and HD were prepared and resin-bonded with monolithic lithium disilicate crowns (n = 10), then subjected to wet cyclic loading in a step-stress manner (500 N initial load, 100 N step size, 100,000 cycles per step, 20 Hz frequency). Data were statistically analysed using Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc comparisons (α = 0.05). Survival probability estimation was performed by Mantel-Cox Log-Rank test with 95% confidence intervals. The fatigue failure load (FFL) and the number of cycles until failure (NCF) were evaluated with Weibull statistics. Finite Element Models of the fatigue test were established for stress distribution analysis and lifetime prediction. Fractographic observations were qualitatively analysed.

RESULTS

The flexural strength of HD (164.27 ± 14.24 MPa), G10 (116.48 ± 5.93 MPa), and RPN (86.73 ± 3.56 MPa) were significantly different (p < 0.001), while no significant difference was observed in their flexural moduli (p = 0.377) and the indentation hardness between HD and RPN (p = 0.749). The wet cyclic fatigue test revealed comparable mean FFL and NCF of G10 and RPN to HD (p = 0.237 and 0.294, respectively) and similar survival probabilities for the three groups (p = 0.055). However, RPN promotes higher stability and lower deviation of fatigue test results than G10 in Weibull analysis and FEA.

SIGNIFICANCE

Even though dentine analogue materials might exhibit similar elastic properties and fatigue performance to human dentine, different reliabilities of fatigue on crown-dentine analogues were shown. RPN seems to be a better substrate that could provide higher reliability and predictability of laboratory study results.

A Preliminary In Vitro Study of 3D Full-Field Strain Distribution in Human Whole Premolars Using Digital Image Correlation

Full-field measurements can provide a more complete description of the behavior of human whole tooth under load. To that end, in vitro experiments were carried out to measure the full-field buccal surface strains of human premolars free of caries and abrasion using digital image correlation (DIC). Experimental results show that both the value field and the orientation field of strains can be observed exactly, both of which contain a wealth of information. Furthermore, the strain distributions between the crown and the root of specimens were significantly different (p < 0.001). An interesting observation was a watershed at the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) which separates the orientation field of strains into two distinct parts; the watershed was also observed in the value field of strains in some specimens whose geometries changed obviously at the CEJ. Another interesting observation was that the minor strains increased linearly from cervical to apical regions in the root cementum. Experimental results also support the viewpoint that mechanisms of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) may in part be due to the changing orientation of tensile strains, as well as their magnitude, and they also support the hypothesis that occlusal force can contribute to root fractures.

Digital image correlation in dental materials and related research: A review

OBJECTIVE

Digital image correlation (DIC) is a non-contact image processing technique for full-field strain measurement. Although DIC has been widely used in engineering and biomechanical fields, it is in the spotlight only recently in dental materials. Therefore, the purpose of this review paper is introducing the working principle of the DIC technique with some modifications and providing further potential applications in various dental materials and related fields.

METHODS

The accuracy of the algorithm depending on the environmental characteristics of the DIC technique, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of strain measurement using optical measurements, have been elaborated in dental materials and related fields. Applications to those researches have been classified into the following categories: shrinkage behavior of light-cured resin composite, resin-tooth interface, mechanical properties of tooth structure, crack extension and elastic properties of dental materials, and deformation of dental restoration and prosthesis. This classification and discussion were performed using literature survey and review based on numerous papers in the international journals published over the past 20 years. The future directions for predicting the precise deformation of dental materials under various environments, as well as limitations of the DIC technique, was presented in this review.

RESULTS

The DIC technique was demonstrated as a more effective tool to measure full-field polymerization shrinkage of composite resin, even in a simulated clinical condition over the existing methods. Moreover, the DIC combined with other technologies can be useful to evaluate the mechanical behavior of material-tooth interface, dentine structure and restorative and prosthetic materials with high accuracy. Three-dimensional DIC using two cameras extended the measurement range in-plane to out-of-plane, enabling measure of the strain directly on the surface of dental restorations or prosthesis.

SIGNIFICANCE

DIC technique is a potential tool for measuring and predicting the full-field deformation/strain of dental materials and actual prostheses in diverse clinical conditions. The versatility of DIC can replace the existing complex sensor devices in those studies.

Numerical Analysis of the Biomechanical Behavior for both Kinds of Dental Structures

The aim of the present study is to investigate the comparison between the biomechanical behavior of the dental prosthesis composed of three implants replacing successively the premolar and two molars and the dental bridge located between two implants. Both dental structures were subjected to the same masticatory loading (Corono-apical, Linguo-buccal and Disto- mesial). Three-dimensional finite element models of dental structures were developed to determine the stress distribution under simulated applied loads. In this study the biomechanical behavior of prosthetics dental crowns subjected to static loads in contact with the jawbone has been highlighted. Biomechanical simulations indicated that the equivalent stresses in the dental bridge are greater than that produced in the dental prosthesis. The dental bridge can be assimilated to a beam at the embedded ends, subjected to the bending.

Uniaxial/biaxial flexure strengths and elastic properties of resin-composite block materials for CAD/CAM

OBJECTIVE

Comparing strengths under different loading conditions provides useful information on the mechanical behaviour of restorative materials under multiaxial masticatory loading in the oral cavity. The aims of this study was to investigate the flexural strengths and the reliability of resin-composite blocks for CAD/CAM by uniaxial and biaxial flexure tests and to compare the elastic properties measured by different methods including digital image correlation (DIC).

METHODS

Four resin-composite blocks for CAD/CAM, namely, VE (Vita Enamic), LU (Lava Ultimate), MD (Mazic Duro), and CS (Cerasmart), were investigated. Beam specimens (4.0×1.4×18.0mm³) and disks (12-14mmϕ×1.5mm) were prepared to determine the uniaxial (three-point bending) and biaxial (ball-on-ring, BOR) flexural strengths and flexural moduli. A compression test (8×4×18mm³) with DIC analysis was utilized to measure the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio. Data were analysed by a 2-parameter Weibull function and ANOVA with Scheffe's test.

RESULTS

The mean uniaxial and biaxial strengths and Weibull moduli of the specimen groups were as follows: uniaxial VE (140.1±7.0, 24.1), LU (159.1±6.3, 31.5), MD (144.9±13.3, 13.6), and CS (165.4±16.9, 11.2) and biaxial VE (153.6±10.4, 19.0), LU (231.0±29.3, 9.7), MD (148.9±23.8, 7.4), and CS (249.7±22.4, 13.8). Although the ranking of both sets of strength data remained unchanged, the strength reliability was significantly affected by the loading; the Weibull moduli of the specimens decreased when they were subjected to biaxial tests (except for that of CS). The elastic modulus values of the materials varied significantly under the different test loadings, although they were in the same order regardless of the test method: VE>>LU≈MD>CS. The DIC technique yielded elastic moduli that were in good agreement with those measured by the uniaxial flexure test.

SIGNIFICANCE

The flexural strength, reliability, and elastic modulus of resin-composite block materials differed with the uniaxial and biaxial flexural loading and the test method. The different behaviours under both loadings should be considered in the evaluation of the mechanical performance of those materials.

Neighborhood binary speckle pattern for deformation measurements insensitive to local illumination variation by digital image correlation

Speckle pattern-based characteristics of digital image correlation (DIC) restrict its application in engineering fields and nonlaboratory environments, since serious decorrelation effect occurs due to localized sudden illumination variation. A simple and efficient speckle pattern adjusting and optimizing approach presented in this paper is aimed at providing a novel speckle pattern robust enough to resist local illumination variation. The new speckle pattern, called neighborhood binary speckle pattern, derived from original speckle pattern, is obtained by means of thresholding the pixels of a neighborhood at its central pixel value and considering the result as a binary number. The efficiency of the proposed speckle pattern is evaluated in six experimental scenarios. Experiment results indicate that the DIC measurements based on neighborhood binary speckle pattern are able to provide reliable and accurate results, even though local brightness and contrast of the deformed images have been seriously changed. It is expected that the new speckle pattern will have more potential value in engineering applications.

An Evaluation of Global and Local Tensile Properties of Friction-Stir Welded DP980 Dual-Phase Steel Joints Using a Digital Image Correlation Method

The effect of the microstructure heterogeneity on the tensile plastic deformation characteristic of friction-stir-welded (FSW) dual-phase (DP) steel was investigated for the potential applications on the lightweight design of vehicles. Friction-stir-welded specimens with a butt joint configuration were prepared, and quasi-static tensile tests were conducted, to evaluate the tensile properties of DP980 dual-phase steels. The friction-stir welding led to the formation of martensite and a significant hardness rise in the stir zone (SZ), but the presence of a soft zone in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) was caused by tempering of the pre-existing martensite. Owing to the appearance of severe soft zone, DP980 FSW joint showed almost 93% joint efficiency with the view-point of ultimate tensile strength and relatively low ductility than the base metal (BM). The local tensile deformation characteristic of the FSW joints was also examined using the digital image correlation (DIC) methodology by mapping the global and local strain distribution, and was subsequently analyzed by mechanics calculation. It is found that the tensile deformation of the FSW joints is highly heterogeneous, leading to a significant decrease in global ductility. The HAZ of the joints is the weakest region where the strain localizes early, and this localization extends until fracture with a strain near 30%, while the strain in the SZ and BM is only 1% and 4%, respectively. Local constitutive properties in different heterogeneous regions through the friction-stir-welded joint was also briefly evaluated by assuming iso-stress conditions. The local stress-strain curves of individual weld zones provide a clear indication of the heterogeneity of the local mechanical properties.
