Abstract
This study investigated the microencapsulation process of natural taro essence and characterized its physicochemical properties. The effects of core-to-wall ratio, T-20/β-CD mass ratio, and ultrasonic time on encapsulation efficiency were systematically investigated. Optimal conditions, identified through orthogonal experiments, included a core-to-wall ratio of 1:10, a T-20/β-CD mass ratio of 1.6:1, and an ultrasonic time of 40 min, resulting in an encapsulation efficiency of 56.10%. The characterization of the microcapsules revealed satisfactory physical properties, including low moisture content, suitable solubility, appropriate bulk density, and good flowability. Particle size distribution analysis showed consistency, and zeta potential measurements indicated stability against agglomeration. Thermal analysis demonstrated enhanced thermal stability, and FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed successful encapsulation through significant interactions between taro essence and β-CD. SEM imaging revealed a heterogeneous morphology, while XRD patterns validated the formation of stable inclusion complexes. An analysis of volatile components indicated the effective encapsulation of key alkanes, with PCA and heatmap clustering analyses confirming the stability of these components during storage. In conclusion, the optimized microencapsulation process significantly enhances the encapsulation efficiency, stability, and thermal properties of natural taro essence microcapsules.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the physicochemical properties of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and cellulose enriched in Saccharina japonica by-products and to evaluate their anti-colitis effects. The water-holding capacity (WHC), swelling capacity (SC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and antioxidant properties of SDF were superior to cellulose. The ΔH of SDF and cellulose was 340.73 J/g and 134.56 J/g, and the average particle size of them was 43.858 μm and 97.350 μm. The viscosity of SDF was positively correlated with the content. SEM revealed that the microstructure of SDF was porous, whereas cellulose was folded. SDF contained seven monosaccharides such as mannuronic acid and mannose, while cellulose had a single glucose composition. It was also shown that both SDF and cellulose reversed the pathological process of colitis by inhibiting weight loss, preventing colon injury, balancing oxidative stress, and regulating the level of inflammation, with the optimal dose being 1.5 g/kg. The difference was that SDF inhibited the expression of NF-кB and TNF-α, while cellulose up-regulated the expression of PPAR-γ and IL-10. Additionally, SDF could more positively control the expression of ZO-1, whereas cellulose was superior in improving the expression of Occludin. Interestingly, SDF could restore the structure of norank_f_Muribaculaceae and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group to ameliorate ulcerative colitis (UC), whereas cellulose mainly regulated the abundance of norank_f_Muribaculaceae, Faecalibaculum, Bacteroides and unclassified_f__Lachnospiraceae. The production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was also found to be restored by SDF and cellulose. Overall, SDF and cellulose can be considered important dietary components for treating and preventing UC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cold stress has negative effects on the growth and health of mammals, and has become a factor restricting livestock development at high latitudes and on plateaus. The gut-liver axis is central to energy metabolism, and the mechanisms by which it regulates host energy metabolism at cold temperatures have rarely been illustrated. In this study, we evaluated the status of glycolipid metabolism and oxidative stress in pigs based on the gut-liver axis and propose that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key target for alleviating energy stress at cold temperatures by dietary fat supplementation. RESULTS Dietary fat supplementation alleviated the negative effects of cold temperatures on growth performance and digestive enzymes, while hormonal homeostasis was also restored. Moreover, cold temperature exposure increased glucose transport in the jejunum. In contrast, we observed abnormalities in lipid metabolism, which was characterized by the accumulation of bile acids in the ileum and plasma. In addition, the results of the ileal metabolomic analysis were consistent with the energy metabolism measurements in the jejunum, and dietary fat supplementation increased the activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain and lipid metabolism. As the central nexus of energy metabolism, the state of glycolipid metabolism and oxidative stress in the liver are inconsistent with that in the small intestine. Specifically, we found that cold temperature exposure increased glucose transport in the liver, which fully validates the idea that hormones can act on the liver to regulate glucose output. Additionally, dietary fat supplementation inhibited glucose transport and glycolysis, but increased gluconeogenesis, bile acid cycling, and lipid metabolism. Sustained activation of AMPK, which an energy receptor and regulator, leads to oxidative stress and apoptosis in the liver; dietary fat supplementation alleviates energy stress by reducing AMPK phosphorylation. CONCLUSIONS Cold stress reduced the growth performance and aggravated glycolipid metabolism disorders and oxidative stress damage in pigs. Dietary fat supplementation improved growth performance and alleviated cold temperature-induced energy stress through AMPK-mediated mitochondrial homeostasis. In this study, we highlight the importance of AMPK in dietary fat supplementation-mediated alleviation of host energy stress in response to environmental changes.

Abstract
Introduction The pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (DN) is complex, inflammation is the central link among the inducing factors in the existing research, and the gutkidney axis could scientifically explain the reasons for the accumulation of chronic low-grade inflammation. As both a medicine and food, corn silk contains abundant polysaccharides. Historical studies and modern research have both confirmed its intervention effect on diabetes and DN, but the mechanism of action is unclear. Methods In this study, a DN rat model was generated, and the therapeutic effect of corn silk polysaccharides (CSPs) was evaluated based on behavioral, histopathological and biochemical indicators. We attempted to fully understand the interactions between CSPs, the gut microbiota and the host at the systemic level from a gut microbiota metabolomics perspective to fundamentally elucidate the mechanisms of action that can be used to intervene in DN. Results Research has found that the metabolic pathways with a strong correlation with CSPs were initially identified as glycerophosphate, fatty acid, bile acid, tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine metabolism and involved Firmicutes, Bacteroides, Lachnospiraceae-NK4A136- group and Dubosiella, suggesting that the effect of CSPs on improving DN is related to changes in metabolite profiles and gut microbiota characteristics. Discussion CSPs could be harnessed to treat the abnormal metabolism of endogenous substances such as bile acids and uremic toxins caused by changes in gut microbiota, thus alleviating kidney damage caused by inflammation. In view of its natural abundance, corn silk is safe and nontoxic and can be used for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and DN.

Abstract
The Yorkshire pigs, renowned for their remarkable growth rate, low feed conversion ratio (FCR), and high meat production, emerge as a novel preference for paternal breeding. In this study, we found that purebred paternal Yorkshire pigs (PY) surpass the purebred Duroc breed in terms of growth rate. Specifically, purebred PY attain a weight of 100 kg at an earlier age compared to purebred Duroc (Male, 145.07 vs. 162.91; Female, 145.91 vs. 167.57; p-value < 0.01). Furthermore, different hybrid combinations suggest that offspring involving purebred PY exhibit superior growth performance. Compared with purebred Duroc, the offspring of purebred PY have an earlier age in days (173.23 vs. 183.54; p-value < 0.05) at the same slaughter weight. The changes of plasma metabolites of 60-day-old purebred boars in the two sire-breeds showed that 1335 metabolites in plasma were detected. Compared with Duroc, 28 metabolites were down-regulated and 49 metabolites were up-regulated in PY. Principal component analysis (PCA) discerned notable dissimilarities in plasma metabolites between the two sire-breeds of pigs. The levels of glycerol 3-phosphate choline, cytidine, guanine, and arachidonic acid increased significantly (p-value < 0.05), exerting an impact on their growth and development. According to our results, PY could be a new paternal option as a terminal sire in three-way cross system.

Abstract
The effects of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and cellulose (IDF) from Saccharina japonica by-product and their differences in improving constipation were further clarified in the present study. We demonstrated that SDF was mainly made up of d-mannuronic acid and d-mannose while IDF consisted of d-glucose , which is different from other reported dietary fibers of terrestrial plants. In this research, both SDF and IDF improved fecal-related indicators, gastrointestinal transit rate and histological morphology in Lop-induced mice. Moreover, they could increase the level of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and GSH-Px), restore the expression of enteric neurotransmitters, and maintain the function of ZO-1, JAM-1 as well as Occludin. Interestingly, SDF and IDF had a significant up-regulated effect on the proportion of Muribaculacea, Prevotellaceaen and Lachnospiraceae, which are critical to preserving intestinal immune homeostasis. Besides, they promoted the biosynthesis of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The overall index showed that SDF is more effective for constipation due to its better water retention capacity. Thus, they can be used as a safe dietary supplement for the treatment of chronic or occasional constipation in humans.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Drug monotherapy was inadequate in controlling blood glucose levels and other comorbidities. An agent that selectively tunes multiple targets was regarded as a new therapeutic strategy for type 2 diabetes. Acanthopanax trifoliatus (L.) Merr polysaccharide (ATMP) is a bio-macromolecule isolated from Acanthopanax trifoliatus (L.) Merr and has therapeutic potential for diabetes management due to its anti-hyperglycemia activity. METHODS Type 2 diabetes mellitus was induced in mice using streptozotocin, and 40 and 80 mg/kg ATMP was administered daily via the intragastric route for 8 weeks. Food intake, water intake, and body weight were recorded. The fasting blood glucose (FBG), fasting insulin (FINS) and an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) were performed. Histological changes in the liver and pancreas were analyzed by H&E staining. The mRNA and the protein levels of key factors involved in glycogen synthesis, glycogenolysis, and gluconeogenesis were measured by quantitative real time PCR and Western blotting. RESULTS In this study, we found that ATMP could effectively improve glucose tolerance and alleviate insulin resistance by promoting insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon secretion. In addition, ATMP decreases glycogen synthesis by inhibiting PI3K/Akt/GSK3β signaling, reduces glycogenolysis via suppressing cAMP/PKA signaling, and suppresses liver gluconeogenesis by activating AMPK signaling. CONCLUSION Together, ATMP has the potential to be developed as a new multitargets therapeutics for type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a worldwide health problem with high prevalence and morbidity associated with obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and dyslipidemia. Nano-formulation of luteolin with Zn oxide in the form of Lut/ZnO NPs may improve the anti-diabetic property of each alone and ameliorate the insulin resistance thus management of NAFLD. This study aimed to measure the efficiency of Lut/ZnO NPs against insulin resistance coupled with NAFLD and T2DM. METHODS A diabetic rat model with NAFLD was induced by a high-fat diet and streptozotocin (30 mg/kg I.P). Serum diabetogenic markers levels, lipid profile, and activity of liver enzymes were measured beside liver oxidative stress markers. Moreover, the hepatic expressions of PI3K/AKT/FoxO1/SERBP1c as well as heme oxygenase-1 were measured beside the histopathological examination. RESULTS Lut/ZnO NPs treatment effectively reduced hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and ameliorated insulin resistance. Additionally, Lut/ZnO NPs improved the hepatic functions, the antioxidant system, and reduced the oxidative stress markers. Furthermore, the lipid load in the liver, as well as the circulating TG and TC, was minified via the suppression of lipogenesis and gluconeogenesis. Moreover, Lut/ZnO NPs activated the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, hence inactivating FoxO1, therefore enhancing the hepatic cells' insulin sensitivity. CONCLUSION Lut/ZnO NPs have a hepatoprotective effect and may relieve the progression of NAFLD by alleviating insulin resistance, ameliorating the antioxidant status, and regulating the insulin signal pathway.
