Composite Anion-Exchange Membrane Fabricated by UV Cross-Linking Vinyl Imidazolium Poly(Phenylene Oxide) with Polyacrylamides and Their Testing for Use in Redox Flow Batteries

Impact of Formulation of Photocurable Precursor Mixtures on the Performance and Dimensional Stability of Hierarchical Cation Exchange Membranes

This work presents a systematic approach to formulating UV curable ionomer coatings that can be used as ion-exchange membranes when they are applied on porous substrates. Ion-exchange membranes fabricated in this way can be a cost-effective alternative to perfluorosulfonic acid membranes, such as Nafion and similar thin ionomer film membranes. Hierarchically structured coated membranes find applications for energy storage and conversion (organic redox flow batteries and artificial photosynthesis cells) and separation processes (electrodialysis). Designing the ionomer precursor for membrane formulation requires the introduction of compounds with drastically different properties into a liquid mixture. Hansen solubility theory was used to find the solvents to compatibilize main formulation components: acrylic sulfone salt (3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt) and hexafunctional polyester acrylate cross-linker (Ebecryl 830), otherwise nonmiscible or mutely soluble. Among the identified suitable solvents, acrylic acid and acetic acid allowed for optimal mixing of the components and reaching the highest levels of sulfonic group content, providing the desired ion-exchange capacity. Interestingly, they represented a case of a reactive and nonreactive solvent since acrylic acid was built into the ionomer during the UV curing step. Properties of the two membrane variants were compared. Samples fabricated with acetic acid exhibit improved handleability compared with the case of acrylic acid. Acetic acid yielded a lower area-specific resistance (6.4 ± 0.17 Ohm·cm2) compared to acrylic acid (12.1 ± 0.16 Ohm·cm2 in 0.5 M NaCl). This was achieved without severely suppressing the selectivity of the membrane, which was standing at 93.4 and 96.4% for preparation with acetic and acrylic acid, respectively.

Modified Membranes for Redox Flow Batteries-A Review

In this review, the state of the art of modified membranes developed and applied for the improved performance of redox flow batteries (RFBs) is presented and critically discussed. The review begins with an introduction to the energy-storing chemical principles and the potential of using RFBs in the energy transition in industrial and transport-related sectors. Commonly used membrane modification techniques are briefly presented and compared next. The recent progress in applying modified membranes in different RFB chemistries is then critically discussed. The relationship between a given membrane modification strategy, corresponding ex situ properties and their impact on battery performance are outlined. It has been demonstrated that further dedicated studies are necessary in order to develop an optimal modification technique, since a modification generally reduces the crossover of redox-active species but, at the same time, leads to an increase in membrane electrical resistance. The feasibility of using alternative advanced modification methods, similar to those employed in water purification applications, needs yet to be evaluated. Additionally, the long-term stability and durability of the modified membranes during cycling in RFBs still must be investigated. The remaining challenges and potential solutions, as well as promising future perspectives, are finally highlighted.

Anion Exchange Membranes Based on Bis-Imidazolium and Imidazolium-Functionalized Poly(phenylene oxide) for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Applications

Although the Nafion membrane has a high energy efficiency, long service life, and operational flexibility when applied for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) applications, its applications are limited due to its high vanadium permeability. In this study, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) based on poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) with imidazolium and bis-imidazolium cations were prepared and used in VRFBs. PPO with long-pendant alkyl-side-chain bis-imidazolium cations (BImPPO) exhibits higher conductivity than the imidazolium-functionalized PPO with short chains (ImPPO). ImPPO and BImPPO have a lower vanadium permeability (3.2 × 10^-9 and 2.9 × 10^-9 cm² s^-1) than Nafion 212 (8.8 × 10^-9 cm² s^-1) because the imidazolium cations are susceptible to the Donnan effect. Furthermore, under the current density of 140 mA cm^-2, the VRFBs assembled with ImPPO- and BImPPO-based AEMs exhibited a Coulombic efficiency of 98.5% and 99.8%, respectively, both of which were higher than that of the Nafion212 membrane (95.8%). Bis-imidazolium cations with long-pendant alkyl side chains contribute to hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separation in the membranes, thus improving the conductivity of membranes and the performance of VRFBs. The VRFB assembled with BImPPO exhibited a higher voltage efficiency (83.5%) at 140 mA cm^-2 than that of ImPPO (77.2%). These results of the present study suggest that the BImPPO membranes are suitable for VRFB applications.

Cross-Linked Anion-Exchange Membranes with Dipole-Containing Cross-Linkers Based on Poly(terphenyl isatin piperidinium) Copolymers

To balance the ionic conductivity and dimensional stability of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), several cross-linked ether-free poly(terphenyl isatin piperidinium) copolymers were synthesized using 1,2-bis(2-aminoethoxy)ethane as a cross-linker. By introducing an alkyl diamine-based hydrophobic cross-linker as a control, the effects of the dipolar-molecule-containing cross-linker on the comprehensive performance of the membranes were investigated. Cation-dipole interactions between the cations and the hydrophilic ethylene oxide cross-linker enhance the self-assembly capability of the cationic groups. The introduction of the rotatable ethylene oxide cross-linker facilitates the flexibility of the cross-linked networks, thereby promoting hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separation and inhibiting excessive swelling of the corresponding AEMs simultaneously. The resulting PTPBHIN-O₁₉ membrane showed a high hydroxide conductivity (151.69 mS cm^-1) and low swelling ratio (10.53%) at 80 °C. Furthermore, owing to the cross-linked structure and ether-free polymer backbone with high alkali resistance, the membranes treated in 3 M NaOH at 80 °C for 1600 h maintained ≥85% of their hydroxide conductivity, indicating excellent alkaline stability. A H₂/O₂ fuel cell based on the PTPBHIN-O₁₉ AEM exhibited a maximum power density of 398 mW cm^-2 at 515 mA cm^-2.

A Sulfonated Polyimide/Nafion Blend Membrane with High Proton Selectivity and Remarkable Stability for Vanadium Redox Flow Battery

A sulfonated polyimide (SPI)/Nafion blend membrane composed of a designed and synthesized SPI polymer and the commercial Nafion polymer is prepared by a facile solution casting method for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Similar molecular structures of both SPI and Nafion provide good compatibility and complementarity of the blend membrane. ATR-FTIR, ¹H-NMR, AFM, and SEM are used to gain insights on the chemical structure and morphology of the blend membrane. Fortunately, the chemical stability of the SPI/Nafion blend membrane is effectively improved compared with reported SPI-based membranes for VRFB applications. In cycling charge-discharge tests, the VRFB with the as-prepared SPI/Nafion blend membrane shows excellent battery efficiencies and operational stability. Above results indicate that the SPI/Nafion blend membrane is a promising candidate for VRFB application. This work opens up a new possibility for fabricating high-performance SPI-based blend membrane by introduction of a polymer with a similar molecular structure and special functional groups into the SPI polymer.
