Abstract
Forage may boost dairy calf health, yet findings vary. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess forage's impact on serum biomarkers, fecal scores, diarrhea, and feeding habits, reviewing 29 studies from 2000 to 2023 across Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and X-Mol. The results showed that forage supplementation increased the concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in the postweaning calves. Furthermore, Dairy calves with forage access showed higher ruminal pH, more rumination, longer eating times, and less non-nutritive oral behavior than those without forage, in both preweaning and postweaning periods. Subgroup analysis reported that feeding forage as a free-choice (FC) had a greater effect on BHBA concentration than feeding it as a total mixed ration (TMR; defined as a mixture of calf starter and forage), and straw supplementation had a greater effect than alfalfa hay (AH) or oat hay (OH) during the postweaning period. Our findings indicate an optimal 9% forage supplementation on a dry matter basis for preweaning calf health.

Abstract
The literature on whether or not to feed forage is marked by inconsistencies, largely due to various factors associated with forage inclusion in calf diets. To elucidate these factors, we conducted a 3-level meta-analysis to comprehensively investigate the overall effects of forage provision in young calves. We searched for studies published between 2000 and 2023 in Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and X-Mol. Moderator analyses were performed to evaluate the effects of different forage sources, forage provision methods, starter forms, milk levels, and forage levels on the heterogeneity of growth performance, rumen fermentation, and nutrient digestibility outcomes in studies feeding forage to calves. A mixed-effect model was used to predict the relationship between forage level and performance. Funnel plots and Egger's test were used to determine publication bias. A total of 86 treatment comparisons from 36 articles were included in the final dataset. The weighted mean difference was used to evaluate the effect size, and the statistical heterogeneity of the effect size was estimated using Cochrane's Q test. The results showed that forage supplementation improved growth performance, structural growth, and development of rumen fermentation in calves. However, moderator analyses revealed that several factors, including forage source, feeding method, physical form of starter, milk feeding level, and forage feeding level might contribute considerably to variability, resulting in significant heterogeneity in the effects of forage provision in calves. Larger effect sizes were found for oat hay (OH) supplementation rather than alfalfa hay (AH) or straw, and for feeding forage as a free choice (FC) compared with a TMR (defined as a mixture of calf starter and forage), especially when forage was fed as a FC resulting in higher total DMI and body barrel. Forage supplementation was more effective in boosting calf growth in calves provided with ground starter than in calves fed pelleted and textured starter. Greater effects were shown for AH supplementation than OH or straw in improving rumen fermentation parameters. Furthermore, compared with the preweaning period, the effect of providing forage on calves was more noticeable in the postweaning period. The results of the mixed-effects model analysis indicated that calves can be efficiently fed 12% of DM as forage during the preweaning period to support their growth and development. Meanwhile, 9% of DM might be the optimal level for feeding OH and straw to preweaning calves. More studies are essential to explore how different levels of AH dietary supplementation affects calves during the preweaning period and improve the consistency and accuracy of the dose-response curve predictions. Overall, growth performance and rumen fermentation of dairy calves were affected by forage inclusion. Moreover, forage source, feeding method, physical form of starter, milk feeding level, and forage level are essential factors that result in different degrees of effect on the calf's performance and rumen fermentation.

Abstract
Oat supplementation of the ruminant diet can improve growth performance and meat quality traits, but the role of muscle metabolites has not been evaluated. This study aimed to establish whether oat grass supplementation (OS) of Small-tail Han sheep improved growth performance and muscle tissue metabolites that are associated with better meat quality and flavor. After 90-day, OS fed sheep had higher live-weight and carcass-weight, and lower carcass fat. Muscle metabolomics analysis showed that OS fed sheep had higher levels of taurine, l-carnitine, inosine-5'-monophospgate, cholic acid, and taurocholic acid, which are primarily involved in taurine and hypotaurine metabolism, purine metabolism, and bile acid biosynthesis and secretion, decreased fat accumulation and they promote functional or flavor metabolites. OS also increased muscle levels of amino acids that are attributed to better quality and flavorsome mutton. These findings provided further evidence for supplementing sheep with oat grass to improve growth performance and meat quality.

Abstract
Introduction Calves are very susceptible to stress in the early stages of life, and it is necessary to ensure maximum welfare. Feeding management has been identified as a major risk factor for calf health and welfare at this stage. However, the management protocol for calf rearing and its impact on animal welfare is unclear. A systematic review of different management strategies for rearing dairy calves according to the three spheres of animal welfare was conducted using an electronic search strategy. In this review, management strategies were studied to identify scientific gaps, to know the welfare problems of these animals in order to prioritize actions and future research and to study the interpretive approach of this management from the three welfare spheres. Methods A protocol was used to analyze and extract information from the studies. Of the 1,783 publications screened, only 351 met the inclusion criteria for the management or welfare of calves' items. Results The publications identified in the search can be divided into two main groups feeding and socialization, based on the main topic of the publication. The main topics that emerged from the search in the feeding management group were milk replacer, colostrum, and weaning, divided into the three main areas of biological functioning and health, natural life and affective states or cognitive judgement. Discussion The main issues to be addressed were the different types of feed consumed by animals from birth to weaning and the weaning management. It has been found that the most researched issues are colostrum and solid starter feed management. Unresolved issues were highlighted, such as the lack of a clear protocol for the administration of milk replacers to reduce hunger and the best management of weaning to reduce stress.

Abstract
Supplementation of the sheep diet with oats (Avena sativa L.) improves animal growth and meat quality, however effects on intestinal microbes and their metabolites was not clear. This study aimed to establish the effect of dietary oat supplementation on rumen and colonic microbial abundance and explore the relationship with subsequent changes in digesta metabolites. Twenty Small-tail Han sheep were randomly assigned to a diet containing 30 g/100 g of maize straw (Control) or oat hay (Oat). After 90-days on experimental diets, rumen and colon digesta were collected and microbial diversity was determined by 16S rRNA gene Illumina NovaSeq sequencing and metabolomics was conducted using Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography Q-Exactive mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QE-MS). Compared to Control group, oat hay increased the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Fibrobacteres as well as known short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producers Prevotellaceae, Ruminococcaceae and Fibrobacteraceae in rumen (p < 0.05). In rumen digesta, the Oat group showed had higher levels of (3Z,6Z)-3,6-nonadienal, Limonene-1,2-epoxide, P-tolualdehyde, and Salicylaldehyde compared to Control (p < 0.05) and these metabolites were positively correlated with the abundance of cecal Prevotellaceae NK3B31. In conclusion, supplementation of the sheep diet with oat hay improved desirable microbes and metabolites in the rumen, providing insight into mechanisms whereby meat quality can be improved by oat hay supplementation.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of a polyherbal additive (PA) containing hydrolyzable tannins, flavonoids, and essential oils on productive performance, dietary energetics, carcass and meat characteristics, and blood metabolites of lambs in their finishing phase. Twenty-eight Pelibuey × Katahdin lambs (20.52 ± 0.88 kg body weight (BW)) were housed in individual pens and assigned to four treatments (n = 7) with different doses of PA: 0 (CON), 1 (PA1), 2 (PA2), and 3 (PA3) g of PA kg−1 of DM for 56 days. Compared to the CON, lambs in PA1 treatment had higher average daily gain (p = 0.03), higher dietary energy utilization (p = 0.01), greater backfat thickness (p = 0.02), greater Longissimus dorsi muscle area (p = 0.01), and better feed conversion ratio (p = 0.02). PA supplementation did not affect (p > 0.05) dry matter intake, carcass yield, biometric measures, and meat chemical composition. All hematological and most of the blood biochemical parameters were similar in lambs of all treatments (p > 0.05). However, compared to the CON, lambs assigned to the PA3 treatment had lower serum urea concentration (p = 0.05) and higher serum albumin concentration (p = 0.03). In conclusion, low doses of PA could be used as a growth promoter in finishing lambs without affecting dry matter intake, carcass yield, meat chemical composition, and health status of the lambs. However, more in vivo research is needed to better understand the impact of bioactive compounds from PA used on productivity, metabolism, and health status of finishing lambs.
