The Effect of Volatile Organic Compounds on Different Organisms: Agrobacteria, Plants and Insects

GC-MS-based metabolomics of volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath: applications in health and disease. A review

Exhaled breath analysis, with particular emphasis on volatile organic compounds, represents a growing area of clinical research due to its obvious advantages over other diagnostic tests. Numerous pathologies have been extensively investigated for the identification of specific biomarkers in exhalates through metabolomics. However, the transference of breath tests to clinics remains limited, mainly due to deficiency in methodological standardization. Critical steps include the selection of breath sample types, collection devices, and enrichment techniques. GC-MS is the reference analytical technique for the analysis of volatile organic compounds in exhalates, especially during the biomarker discovery phase in metabolomics. This review comprehensively examines and compares metabolomic studies focusing on cancer, lung diseases, and infectious diseases. In addition to delving into the experimental designs reported, it also provides a critical discussion of the methodological aspects, ranging from the experimental design and sample collection to the identification of potential pathology-specific biomarkers.

Bacterial volatile organic compounds as biopesticides, growth promoters and plant-defense elicitors: Current understanding and future scope

Bacteria emit a large number of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment. VOCs are species-specific and their emission depends on environmental conditions, such as growth medium, pH, temperature, incubation time and interaction with other microorganisms. These VOCs can enhance plant growth, suppress pathogens and act as signaling molecules during plant-microorganism interactions. Some bacterial VOCs have been reported to show strong antimicrobial, nematicidal, pesticidal, plant defense, induced tolerance and plant-growth-promoting activities under controlled conditions. Commonly produced antifungal VOCs include dimethyl trisulfide, dimethyl disulfide, benzothiazole, nonane, decanone and 1-butanol. Species of Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Enterobacter and Burkholderia produce plant growth promoting VOCs, such as acetoin and 2,3-butenediol. These VOCs affect expression of genes involved in defense and development in plant species (i.e., Arabidopsis, tobacco, tomato, potato, millet and maize). VOCs are also implicated in altering pathogenesis-related genes, inducing systemic resistance, modulating plant metabolic pathways and acquiring nutrients. However, detailed mechanisms of action of VOCs need to be further explored. This review summarizes the bioactive VOCs produced by diverse bacterial species as an alternative to agrochemicals, their mechanism of action and challenges for employment of bacterial VOCs for sustainable agricultural practices. Future studies on technological improvements for bacterial VOCs application under greenhouse and open field conditions are warranted.

Do Volatiles Affect Bacteria and Plants in the Same Way? Growth and Biochemical Response of Non-Stressed and Cd-Stressed Arabidopsis thaliana and Rhizobium E20-8

Plant roots are colonized by rhizobacteria, and these soil microorganisms can not only stimulate plant growth but also increase tolerance to stress through the production of volatile organic compounds. However, little is known about the effect that these plant beneficial volatiles may have on bacteria. In this study, the effects on growth and oxidative status of different concentrations of three volatiles already reported to have a positive influence on plant growth (2-butanone, 3-methyl-1-butanol, and 2,3-butanediol) were determined in A. thaliana and Rhizobium sp. strain E20-8 via airborne exposure in the presence and absence of Cd. It was expected to ascertain if the plant and the bacterium are influenced in the same way by the volatiles, and if exposure to stress (Cd) shifts the effects of volatiles on plants and bacteria. Results showed the antioxidant activity of the volatiles protecting the plant cell metabolism from Cd toxicity and increasing plant tolerance to Cd. Effects on bacteria were less positive. The two alcohols (3-methyl-1-butanol and 2,3-butanediol) increased Cd toxicity, and the ketone (2-butanone) was able to protect Rhizobium from Cd stress, constituting an alternative way to protect soil bacterial communities from stress. The application of 2-butanone thus emerges as an alternative way to increase crop production and crop resilience to stress in a more sustainable way, either directly or through the enhancement of PGPR activity.

Influence of Effective Microorganisms on Some Biological and Biochemical Aspects of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Bosid.), is a major pest in African and Asian nations that attacks a wide variety of host plants. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of effective microorganisms (EMs) on the biological and physiological features of S. littoralis larvae. Five concentrations (100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 ppm) of EMs were tested. Antifeedant activity, food consumption index, the efficiency of converting digested food, the efficiency of converting ingested food, relative growth rate, and approximate body tissue of the fourth larval instar of S. littoralis were determined. Moreover, carbohydrate enzyme activities (amylase, trehalose, and invertase), total protein, and total lipids of S. littoralis larvae were measured to elucidate the mode of action of the tested agent in the S. littoralis’s larval stage. The EMs at 500 ppm had a substantial impact on antifeedant activity, nutritional indices, egg deposit reduction, and hatchability in S. littoralis during the five days. All concentrations interrupted S. littoralis’s life cycle and developmental phases. Furthermore, all concentrations were quite useful in lengthening the developmental stages of S. littoralis. In addition, Ems affected the biochemical activities of larvae, leading to disturbances in carbohydrate, lipid, and protein levels. From this study, EMs can be used as a bioinsecticide alternative to traditional insecticides against S. littoralis and may be compatible with integrated pest management approaches.

Responses of Adult Hypera rumicis L. to Synthetic Plant Volatile Blends

The behavioral responses of Hypera rumicis L. adults to varying blends of synthetic plant volatiles (SPVs) at various concentrations in lieu of single compounds are reported for the first time. For this study, Rumex confertus plants were treated with two blends of SPVs at different quantities that act as either attractants or repellents to insects. Blend 1 (B1) consisted of five green leaf volatiles (GLVs), namely (Z)-3-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenol, (E)-2-hexenol, and (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl acetate. Blend 2 (B2) contained six plant volatiles, namely (Z)-ocimene, linalool, benzyl acetate, methyl salicylate, β-caryophyllene, and (E)-β-farnesene. Each blend was made available in four different amounts of volatiles, corresponding to each compound being added to 50 µL of hexane in amounts of 1, 5, 25 and 125 ng. The effects of the two blends at the different concentrations on the insects were evaluated using a Y-tube olfactometer. Both sexes of the insects were found to be significantly repelled by the highest volatile levels of B1 and by two levels of B2 (25 and 125 ng). Females were also observed to be repelled using B2 with 5 ng of each volatile. Attraction was observed for both sexes only for B1 at the three lower volatile levels (1, 5 and 25 ng). In additional experiments, using only attractants, unmated females were found to be attracted to males, whereas mated females were only attracted to B1. Both unmated and mated males (previously observed in copula) were attracted only to females.

The effects of secondary bacterial metabolites on photosynthesis in microalgae cells

Secondary metabolites of bacteria are regulatory molecules that act as "info-chemicals" that control some metabolic processes in the cells of microorganisms. These molecules provide the function of bacteria communication in microbial communities. As primary producers of organic matter in the biosphere, microalgae play a central ecological role in various ecosystems. Photosynthesis is a central process in microalgae cells, and it is exposed to various biotic and abiotic factors. Various secondary metabolites of bacteria confer a noticeable regulatory effect on photosynthesis in microalgae cells. The main purpose of this review is to highlight recent experimental results that demonstrate the impact of several types of common bacterial metabolites (volatile organic compounds, non-protein amino acids, and peptides) on photosynthetic activity in cells of microalgae. The use of these molecules as herbicides can be of great importance both for practical applications and for basic research.

Effects of Volatile Organic Compounds on Biofilms and Swimming Motility of Agrobacterium tumefaciens

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by bacteria play an important role in the interaction between microorganisms and other organisms. They can inhibit the growth of phytopathogenic microorganisms, modulate plant growth, and serve as infochemicals. Here, we investigated the effects of ketones, alcohols, and terpenes on the colony biofilms of plant pathogenic Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains and swimming motility, which can play an important role in the formation of biofilms. It was shown that 2-octanone had the greatest inhibitory effect on biofilm formation, acting in a small amount (38.7 g/m³). Ketone 2-butanone and unsaturated ketone β-ionone reduced the formation of biofilms at higher doses (145.2–580.6 and 387.1–1548.3 g/m³, respectively, up to 2.5–5 times). Isoamyl alcohol and 2-phenylethanol decreased the formation of biofilms at doses of 88.7 and 122.9 g/m³ by 1.7 and 5 times, respectively, with an increased effect at 177.4 and 245.9 g/m³, respectively. The agrobacteria cells in mature biofilms were more resistant to the action of ketones and alcohols. These VOCs also suppressed the swimming motility of agrobacteria; the radius of swimming zones decreased ~from 2 to 5 times. Terpenes (−)-limonene and (+)-α-pinene had no significant influence on the colony biofilms and swimming motility at the doses used. The results obtained represent new information about the effect of VOCs on biofilms and the motility of bacteria.

Enhance Systemic Resistance Significantly Reduces the Silverleaf Whitefly Population and Increases the Yield of Sweet Pepper, Capsicum annuum L. var. annuum

The silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is one of the most harmful insects attacking several economic plant crops worldwide, and it has developed a resistance toward several conventional insecticides. This study was conducted to estimate the impact of potassium phosphite (PK), effective microorganisms (EMs), and salicylic acid (SA) as plant inducers, and imidacloprid (IMI) as a synthetic insecticide on the systemic acquired resistance of sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum var. annuum) crop, whitefly population, and crop yield under greenhouse conditions. The treatment plots were sprayed with IMI, PK, EMs, SA, and water (control) on the 27th day after planting, and dinotefuran was applied when the whitefly-infestation ratio reached 3.00%. The enzymes responsible for the internal defence system, whitefly population, and crop yield were determined. Our results confirmed the idea that the PK, EMs, and SA may induce the synthesis of plant enzymes responsible for the internal defence system. The IMI, PK, EMs, and SA significantly suppressed the whitefly population compared with the control. Moreover, the reduction percentages of the whitefly population were significantly higher when using IMI and PK than EMs and SA. The IMI, PK, EMs, and SA improved the crop yield. It could be concluded that PK, EMs, and SA enhanced the systemic acquired resistance in sweet pepper crop causing high defence against the population of whitefly and might be a potent alternative to conventional insecticides and compatible with an integrated pest management program.
