Abstract
Fatty acids (FAs) participate in extensive physiological activities such as energy metabolism, transcriptional control, and cell signaling. In bacteria, FAs are degraded and utilized through various metabolic pathways, including β-oxidation. Over the past ten years, significant progress has been made in studying FA oxidation in bacteria, particularly in E. coli, where the processes and roles of FA β-oxidation have been comprehensively elucidated. Here, we provide an update on the new research achievements in FAs β-oxidation in bacteria. Using Xanthomonas as an example, we introduce the oxidation process and regulation mechanism of the DSF-family quorum sensing signal. Based on current findings, we propose the specific enzymes required for β-oxidation of several specific FAs. Finally, we discuss the future outlook on scientific issues that remain to be addressed. This paper supplies theoretical guidance for further study of the FA β-oxidation pathway with particular emphasis on its connection to the pathogenicity mechanisms of bacteria.

Abstract
Mycobacterium tuberculosis causes 6.4 million cases of tuberculosis and claims 1.6 million lives annually. Mycobacterial adhesion, invasion of host cells, and subsequent intracellular survival are crucial for the infection and dissemination process, yet the cellular mechanisms underlying these phenomena remain poorly understood. This study created a Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) transposon library using a MycomarT7 phage carrying a Himar1 Mariner transposon to identify genes related to mycobacteria adhesion and invasion. Using adhesion and invasion model screening, we found that the mutant strain B2909 lacked adhesion and invasion abilities because of an inactive fadD18 gene, which encodes a fatty-acyl CoA ligase, although the specific function of this gene remains unclear. To investigate the role of FadD18, we constructed a complementary strain and observed that fadD18 expression enhanced the colony size and promoted the formation of a stronger cord-like structure; FadD18 expression also inhibited BCG growth and reduced BCG intracellular survival in macrophages. Furthermore, FadD18 expression elevated levels of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α in infected macrophages by stimulating the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. Overall, the FadD18 plays a key role in the adhesion and invasion abilities of mycobacteria while modulating the intracellular survival of BCG by influencing the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
The production of commodity and specialty vegetable oils is increasing every year to fulfill the ever-increasing demand where the trading of oils occurs primarily via sea shipping. Spills of vegetable oil into the aquatic environment may result in detrimental effects on aquatic ecosystems. Environmental degradation of vegetable oil spills occurs mainly via microbial activity, chemical oxidation, wave and wind actions. However, the polymerization of oils can hinder their ability to naturally degrade. Thus, human intervention in the form of both short- and long-term remediation, is desirable to reduce the effects of vegetable oil spills on aquatic ecosystems. Studies have been conducted to determine how the type and concentration of the vegetable oil contamination influence its toxicity on various organisms. Some studies show that the effect of vegetable oil spills is found to be relatively short-lived and to a certain extent increase the survivability of certain organisms. However, the integrated effect of vegetable oil spills on aquatic organisms and their environment is still being researched. This review summarizes the existing knowledge on the reported occurrences of vegetable oil spills, their degradation, and their toxicity towards the surrounding aquatic environment which would be helpful in the knowledge transfer of remediation of vegetable oils.

Abstract
Serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT) catalyzes the first and committed step in sphingolipid biosynthesis condensating L-serine and acyl-CoA to form 3-oxo-sphinganine. Whenever the structural gene for SPT is present in genomes of Rhodobacteria (α-, β-, and γ-Proteobacteria), it co-occurs with genes coding for a putative acyl carrier protein (ACP) and a putative acyl-CoA synthetase (ACS). In the α-proteobacterium Caulobacter crescentus, CC_1162 encodes an SPT, whereas CC_1163 and CC_1165 encode the putative ACP and ACS, respectively, and all three genes are known to be required for the formation of the sphingolipid intermediate 3-oxo-sphinganine. Here we show that the putative ACP possesses a 4'-phosphopantetheine prosthetic group, is selectively acylated by the putative ACS and therefore is a specialized ACP (AcpR) required for sphingolipid biosynthesis in Rhodobacteria. The putative ACS is unable to acylate coenzyme A or housekeeping ACPs, but acylates specifically AcpR. Therefore, it is a specialized acyl-ACP synthetase (AasR). SPTs from C. crescentus, Escherichia coli B, or Sphingomonas wittichii use preferentially acyl-AcpR as thioester substrate for 3-oxo-sphinganine synthesis. Whereas acyl-AcpR from C. crescentus is a good substrate for SPTs from distinct Rhodobacteria, acylation of a specific AcpR is achieved by the cognate AasR from the same bacterium. Rhodobacteria might use this more complex way of 3-oxo-sphinganine formation in order to direct free fatty acids toward sphingolipid biosynthesis.

Abstract
Many bacteria possess all the machineries required to grow on fatty acids (FA) as a unique source of carbon and energy. FA degradation proceeds through the β-oxidation cycle that produces acetyl-CoA and reduced NADH and FADH cofactors. In addition to all the enzymes required for β-oxidation, FA degradation also depends on sophisticated systems for its genetic regulation and for FA transport. The fact that these machineries are conserved in bacteria suggests a crucial role in environmental conditions, especially for enterobacteria. Bacteria also possess specific enzymes required for the degradation of FAs from their environment, again showing the importance of this metabolism for bacterial adaptation. In this review, we mainly describe FA degradation in the Escherichia coli model, and along the way, we highlight and discuss important aspects of this metabolism that are still unclear. We do not detail exhaustively the diversity of the machineries found in other bacteria, but we mention them if they bring additional information or enlightenment on specific aspects.

Abstract
Dietary intervention is effective in human health promotion through modulation of gut microbiota. Diet can cause single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to occur in the gut microbiota, and some of these variations may lead to functional changes in human health. In this study, we performed a systematic SNP analysis based on metagenomic data collected from children with Prader–Willi syndrome (PWS, n = 17) and simple obese (SO) children (n = 19), who had better healthy conditions after receiving high-fiber diet intervention. We found that the intervention increased the SNP proportions of Faecalibacterium, Bifidobacterium, and Clostridium and decreased those of Bacteroides in all children. Besides, the PWS children had Collinsella increased and Ruminococcus decreased, whereas the SO had Blautia and Escherichia decreased. There were much more BiasSNPs in PWS than in SO (4,465 vs 303), and only 81 of them appeared in both groups, of which 78 were from Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, and 51 were nonsynonymous mutations. These nonsynonymous variations were mainly related to pathways of environmental adaptation and nutrition metabolism, particularly to carbohydrate and nucleotide metabolism. In addition, dominant strains carrying BiasSNPs in all children shifted from F. prausnitzii AF32-8AC and F. prausnitzii 942/30-2 to F. prausnitzii SSTS Bg7063 and F. prausnitzii JG BgPS064 after the dietary intervention. Furthermore, although the abundance of Bifidobacterium increased significantly by the intervention and became dominant strains responsible for nutrition metabolism, they had less BiasSNPs between the pre- and post-intervention group in comparison with Faecalibacterium. The finding of F. prausnitzii as important functional strains influenced by the intervention highlights the superiority of applying SNP analysis in studies of gut microbiota. This study provided evidence and support for the effect of dietary intervention on gut microbial SNPs, and gave some enlightenments for disease treatment.
