Extraction of Metal Ions with Metal-Organic Frameworks

Preparation of magnetic amphiphilic resin microspheres via the one-step polymerization method and extraction of four glucocorticoids for HPLC-MS analysis

Amphiphilic materials can be used for sample preparation of chromatography or mass spectrometry. Amphiphilic materials with magnetic properties in combination with magnetic suction devices allow for automated sample preparation. However, conventional synthesis methods are cumbersome and not suitable for the mass production of the material. In this study, a micro-suspension polymerization method was developed to synthesize magnetic amphiphilic resin microspheres (MARMs), providing new ideas for the preparation of amphiphilic microspheres. MARMs with particle sizes ranging from 3 to 6 μm were successfully prepared, with BET surface area up to 653.2 m2/g. A magnetic solid-phase extraction method based on MARM-5 was developed for the extraction of four glucocorticoids including Cortisone, Hydrocortisone, Cortodoxone, and Corticosterone. This method had a very short adsorption time of 0.5 min and a total extraction time of only 13 min. The limit of detection for the four glucocorticoids ranged from 0.22 to 0.82 ng/L. There was a good linear relationship between sample concentration and peak area in the range of 25∼500 ng/L. Relative recovery of 98 %∼108 % and internal standard normalized matrix effect factors of 95∼114 % were obtained, and the relative standard deviation was between 2.3 % and 6.3 %. The MARMs would be used as excellent solid extraction material for glucocorticoids.

Application of a magnetically separable Zr-MOF for fast extraction of palladium before its spectrophotometric detection

In this research, a novel magnetic zirconium-based metal-organic framework (Fe3O4@SiO2@MIP-202, MMOF), was fabricated, fully characterized, and applied for the batch-mode solid phase extraction of trace amounts of Pd2+ ions from water and wastewater samples before its spectrophotometric detection. Pd2+ ions were desorbed from MMOF by nitric acid and were complexed by treating with KI solution to have a maximum absorbance at 410 nm. The synthesized MMOF composite showed a very large surface area (65 m2.g- 1), good magnetization (1.7 emu.g- 1) and a large pore volume (0.059 cm3.g- 1) with adsorption capacity of 194.5 mg of Pd2+ ions/g of the adsorbent. This nanosorbent boasts chemo-mechanical stability, high adsorption capacity due to its vast active sites, and facile recovery facilitated by its magnetic properties. Parameters affecting the extraction efficiency of the method were optimized as pH of the sample 7.4, volume of the sample 25 mL, 15 mg adsorbent, 1 mL of 0.1 M HNO3 eluent, with 10 and 15 min as the extraction and desorption times, respectively. The calibration curve was found to be linear across the 10.0-1500.0 µg.L- 1 range with a limit of detection of 1.05 µg.L- 1. The obtained extraction efficiency and enrichment were 98% and 245, respectively. The total analysis time was less than 30 min. This MMOF has never been used for the extraction of Pd2+ ions before.

Design and application of metal organic frameworks for heavy metals adsorption in water: a review

The growing apprehension surrounding heavy metal pollution in both environmental and industrial contexts has spurred extensive research into adsorption materials aimed at efficient remediation. Among these materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have risen as versatile and promising contenders due to their adjustable properties, expansive surface areas, and sustainable characteristics, compared to traditional options like activated carbon and zeolites. This exhaustive review delves into the synthesis techniques, structural diversity, and adsorption capabilities of MOFs for the effective removal of heavy metals. The article explores the evolution of MOF design and fabrication methods, highlighting pivotal parameters influencing their adsorption performance, such as pore size, surface area, and the presence of functional groups. In this perspective review, a thorough analysis of various MOFs is presented, emphasizing the crucial role of ligands and metal nodes in adapting MOF properties for heavy metal removal. Moreover, the review delves into recent advancements in MOF-based composites and hybrid materials, shedding light on their heightened adsorption capacities, recyclability, and potential for regeneration. Challenges for optimization, regeneration efficiency and minimizing costs for large-scale applications are discussed.

Coordination polymer gel mediated spectrophotometric, ICP-AES and spectrofluorimetric methods for trace As(III) determination in water and food samples

Herein, a coordination polymer gel is proposed for the determination of As(III) in real samples through multispectroscopic techniques viz. spectrophotometry, spectrofluorimetry, and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Taguchi L32 (46 21) design and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) optimized the controllable factors affecting the extraction yielding an experimental S/N ratio of 39.94 dB. The fluorescence quenching (KSV = 2.63 × 106 L mol-1) was static with photoelectron transfer being the main mechanism confirmed by the density functional theory calculations. The limits of detection (LODs), limits of quantification (LOQs) and linear ranges were 0.038 μg L-1, 0.13 μg L-1 and 1.67-116.67 μg L-1, 0.40 μg L-1, 1.21 μg L-1 and 1.67-33.33 μg L-1, 1.07 μg L-1, 3.24 μg L-1 and 3.32-35.37 μg L-1 for the developed enrichment coupled ICP-AES, spectrophotometry and fluorescence sensing methods. Among these methods, the enrichment - ICP-AES method has the lowest LOD, LOQ and the widest linear range followed by the enrichment - spectrophotometry and fluorescene sensing methods. Spectrofluorimetry offers high sensitivity, selectivity, and possible real time monitoring, spectrophotometry provides a cost-effective and versatile option, while ICP-AES manifests multi-element analysis with high sensitivity and low interference. The developed methods were validated and employed for the successful determination of trace As(III) in real samples. The employment of these methods enhances the overall analytical capability for a wide range of sample types and concentrations.

ZIF-67-modified magnetic nanoparticles for extraction of phenoxy carboxylic acid herbicides

Phenoxy carboxylic acid (PCA) herbicides are commonly used herbicides that can easily accumulate in soil, groundwater, crops, and vegetable surfaces. Thus, they pose a serious risk to human health. Accurate detection of trace amounts of PCAs in various matrixes is crucial. Herein, ZIF-67-modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs, ZIF-67@Fe3O4) were prepared by growing ZIF-67 on the surface of Fe3O4 MNPs. The introduction of ZIF-67 improved the dispersion of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in water and enhanced their extraction performance for PCAs. When an eluent consisting of ammonia water and acetonitrile (5% : 95%; v/v) was employed, 10 mg of ZIF-67@Fe3O4 displayed optimal extraction performance for PCAs in a 20 mL sample solution at a pH of 3. We achieved a limit of detection ranging from 0.014 μg L-1 to 0.056 μg L-1 for four types of PCA herbicides by using the newly developed method. Notably, the values were considerably lower than the maximum concentration levels of PCAs in drinking water set by the Environmental Protection Agency. The relative recovery rate of PCAs using ZIF-67@Fe3O4 ranged from 83.75% to 117.07% when applied to river water and apple samples. These results demonstrate the great potential of ZIF-67@Fe3O4 in determining the residues of organic pesticides in real samples.

Overview on recent advances of magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites in removal of heavy metals from aqueous system

Developing a novel, simple, and cost-effective analytical technique with high enrichment capacity and selectivity is crucial for environmental monitoring and remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous coordination polymers that are self-assembly synthesized from organic linkers and inorganic metal ions/metal clusters. Magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites are promising candidate among the new-generation sorbent materials available for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of environmental contaminants due to their superparamagnetism properties, high crystallinity, permanent porosity, ultrahigh specific surface area, adaptable pore shape/sizes, tunable functionality, designable framework topology, rapid and ultrahigh adsorption capacity, and reusability. In this review, we focus on recent scientific progress in the removal of heavy metal ions present in contaminated aquatic system by using MMOF composites. Different types of MMOFs, their synthetic approaches, and various properties that are harnessed for removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated water are discussed briefly. Adsorption mechanisms involved, adsorption capacity, and regeneration of the MMOF sorbents as well as recovery of heavy metal ions adsorbed that are reported in the last ten years have been discussed in this review. Moreover, particular prospects, challenges, and opportunities in future development of MMOFs towards their greener synthetic approaches for their practical industrial applications have critically been considered in this review.

MOF-Based Sorbents Used for the Removal of Hg2+ from Aqueous Solutions via a Sorption-Assisted Microfiltration

Mercury is considered to be one of the most important chemicals of public health concern. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an effective method of removing mercury ions from aqueous solutions to protect people from exposure to this element. This paper presents research on the application of a sorption-assisted microfiltration (SAMF) hybrid process for the removal of Hg²⁺ from aqueous solutions. As adsorbents used in the process, the metal-organic-framework-UiO-66-type materials have been considered. The methods of synthesis of two types of metal-organic-framework (MOF) sorbents were developed: UiO-66_MAA modified with mercaptoacetic acid (MAA) and a composite of UiO-66 with cellulose. The results of the experiments performed proved that the separation of Hg²⁺ from water solutions conducted in such a system was effective; however, a relatively long initial contact time of reagents before filtration was required. The experimental results can be used to optimize the parameters of the SAMF process in order to obtain an effective method of Hg²⁺ removal from aqueous solutions.

Metal-porphyrinic framework nanotechnologies in modern agricultural management

Metal-porphyrinic frameworks are an important subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). These porous materials exhibit a large number of applications for sustainable development and related environmental considerations. Their attractive features include (1) as a free base or metalated with zinc(II) or iron(II or III), they are environmentally benign, and (2) they absorb visible light and are emissive and semi-conducting, making them convenient tools for sensing agrochemicals. But the key feature that makes these nano-sized pristine materials or their composites in many ways superior to most MOFs is their ability to photo-generate reactive oxygen species with visible light, including singlet oxygen. This review describes important issues related to agriculture, including controlled delivery of pesticides and agrochemicals, detection of pesticides and pathogenic metals, elimination of pesticides and toxic metals, and photodynamic antimicrobial activity, and has an important implication for food safety. This comprehensive review presents the progress of the rather rapid developments of these functional and increasingly nano-sized materials and composites in the area of sustainable agriculture.

Recent Trends and Advances in Porous Metal-Organic Framework Nanostructures for the Electrochemical and Optical Sensing of Heavy Metals in Water

With the expansion and advancement in agricultural and chemical industries, various toxic heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, zinc, copper, arsenic etc. are continuously released into the environment. Intake of sources contaminated with such toxic metals leads to various health issues. Keeping the serious effects of these toxic metal ions in view, various organic-inorganic nanomaterials based sensors have been exploited for their detection via optical, electrochemical and colorimetric approaches. Since a chemical sensor works on the principle of interaction between the sensing layer and the analytes, a sensor material with large surface area is required to enable the largest possible interaction with the target molecules and hence the sensitivity of the chemical sensor. However, commonly employed materials such as metal oxides and conducting polymers tend to feature relatively low surface areas, and hence resulting in low sensitivity of the sensor. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) nanostructures are another category of organic-inorganic materials endowed with large surface area, ultra-high and tunable porosity, post-synthesis modification features, readily available active sites, catalytic activity, and chemical/thermal stability. These properties provide high sensitivity to the MOF based sensors due to the adsorption of large number of target analytes. The current review article focuses on MOFs based optical and electrochemical sensors for the detection of heavy metals.

Carbon-Based Nanocatalysts (CnCs) for Biomass Valorization and Hazardous Organics Remediation

The continuous increase of the demand in merchandise and fuels augments the need of modern approaches for the mass-production of renewable chemicals derived from abundant feedstocks, like biomass, as well as for the water and soil remediation pollution resulting from the anthropogenic discharge of organic compounds. Towards these directions and within the concept of circular (bio)economy, the development of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes is of paramount importance. Within this context, the design of novel catalysts play a key role, with carbon-based nanocatalysts (CnCs) representing one of the most promising class of materials. In this review, a wide range of CnCs utilized for biomass valorization towards valuable chemicals production, and for environmental remediation applications are summarized and discussed. Emphasis is given in particular on the catalytic production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from cellulose or starch-rich food waste, the hydrogenolysis of lignin towards high bio-oil yields enriched predominately in alkyl and oxygenated phenolic monomers, the photocatalytic, sonocatalytic or sonophotocatalytic selective partial oxidation of 5-HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and the decomposition of organic pollutants in aqueous matrixes. The carbonaceous materials were utilized as stand-alone catalysts or as supports of (nano)metals are various types of activated micro/mesoporous carbons, graphene/graphite and the chemically modified counterparts like graphite oxide and reduced graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, graphitic carbon nitride, and fullerenes.

Potential lead toxicity and leakage issues on lead halide perovskite photovoltaics

Recently, lead halide perovskite solar cells have become a promising next-generation photovoltaics candidate for large-scale application to realize low-cost renewable electricity generation. Although perovskite solar cells have tremendous advantages such as high photovoltaic performance, low cost and facile solution-based fabrication, the issues involving lead could be one of the main obstacles for its commercialization and large-scale applications. Lead has been widely used in photovoltaics industry, yielding its environmental and health issues of vital importance because of the widespread application of photovoltaics. When the solar cell panels especially perovskite solar cells are damaged, lead would possibly leak into the surrounding environment, causing air, soil and groundwater contamination. Therefore, lots of research efforts have been put into evaluating the lead toxicity and potential leakage issues, as well as studying the encapsulation of lead to deal with leakage issue during fire hazard and precipitation in photovoltaics. In this review, we summarize the latest progress on investigating the lead safety issue on photovoltaics, especially lead halide perovskite solar cells, and the corresponding solutions. We also outlook the future development towards solving the lead safety issues from different aspects.

Pyridine ionic liquid functionalized bimetallic MOF solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography for separation/analysis sunset yellow

An effective method based on the pyridine ionic liquid functionalized bimetallic MOF solid-phase extractant (Cu/Co-MOF@[PrPy][Br]) coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the separation/analysis sunset yellow was established. Cu/Co-MOF@[PrPy][Br] was characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM. Several important factors, such as pH, amount of extractant, extract time, and types of eluents were investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions, linear range of the method was 0.05–40.00 μg mL⁻¹, the detection limit was 0.02 μg mL⁻¹, and the linear correlation was good (R² = 0.9992). The analysis of sunset yellow in soda, effervescent tablet and jelly proved that the method was simple and effective.

On the use of metal-organic frameworks for the extraction of organic compounds from environmental samples

The determination of trace metals and organic contaminants in environmental samples, such as water, air, soil, and sediment, is until today a challenging process for the analytical chemistry. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel porous nanomaterials that are composed of metal ions and an organic connector. These materials are gaining more and more attention due to their superior characteristics, such as high surface area, tunable pore size, mechanical and thermal stability, luminosity, and charge transfer ability between metals and ligands. Among the various applications of MOFs are gas storage, separation, catalysis, and drug delivery. Recently, MOFs have been successfully introduced in the field of sample preparation for analytical chemistry and they have been used for sample pretreatment of various matrices. This review focuses on the applications of MOFs as novel adsorbents for the extraction of organic compounds from environmental samples.

Preparation of magnetic yolk-shell structured metal-organic framework material and its application in pharmacokinetics study of alkaloids

In this study, a magnetic yolk-shell structured metal-organic framework material (Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂) is prepared by the directional etching of Co²⁺/peroxymonosulfate and in situ magnetization. The characteristic properties of the material were investigated by using field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and contact angle test. The Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂ shows the advantages of large surface area, good magnetic property, and satisfactory stability, as well as giving high affinity to alkaloids (ALs) via hydrophilic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction. The results of static adsorption experiment indicate that the Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂ possesses high adsorption capacity towards ALs and the adsorption behaviors are fitted with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Furthermore, a magnetic solid-phase extraction using Fe₃O₄@YS-UiO-66-NH₂ and HPLC method was developed for the analysis of ALs in spiked samples with the recovery of 89.6-100.8%. In addition, the proposed method was successfully applied in the pharmacokinetics study of berberine, coptisine, and palmatine in the rat. In short, the developed method might be used for high-efficient recognition and determination of ALs in plasma sample, which would also provide a new way to fabricate magnetic functionalized metal-organic framework in separation science.

Recent advances in the extraction of triazine herbicides from water samples

Pesticides are excessively used in agriculture to improve the quality of crops by eliminating the negative effects of pests. Among the different groups of pesticides, triazine pesticides are a group of compounds that contain a substituted C₃ H₃ N₃ heterocyclic ring, and they are widely used. Triazine pesticides can be dangerous for humans as well as for the aquatic environment because of their high toxicity and endocrine disrupting effect. However, the concentration of these chemical compounds in water samples is low. Moreover, other compounds that may exist in the water samples can interfere with the determination of triazine pesticides. As a result, it is important to develop sample preparation methods that provide preconcentration of the target analyte and sufficient clean-up of the samples. Recently, a wide variety of novel microextraction and miniaturized extraction techniques (e.g., solid-phase microextraction and liquid-phase microextraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, fabric phase sorptive extraction, dispersive solid-phase extraction, and magnetic solid-phase extraction) have been developed. In this review, we aim to discuss the recent advances regarding the extraction of triazine pesticides from environmental water samples. Emphasis will be given to novel sample preparation methods and novel sorbents developed for sorbent-based extraction techniques.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Bioanalysis: Extraction of Small Organic Molecules

The quantitative determination of xenobiotic compounds, as well as biotics in biological matrices, is generally described with the term bioanalysis. Due to the complexity of biofluids, in combination with the low concentration of the small molecules, their determination in biological matrices is a challenging procedure. Apart from the conventional solid-phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, protein precipitation, and direct injection approaches, nowadays, a plethora of microextraction and miniaturized extraction techniques have been reported. Furthermore, the development and evaluation of novel extraction adsorbents for sample preparation has become a popular research field. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel materials composed of metal ions or clusters in coordination with organic linkers. Unequivocally, MOFs are gaining more and more attention in analytical chemistry due to their superior properties, including high surface area and tunability of pore size and functionality. This review discusses the utilization of MOFs in the sample preparation of biological samples for the green extraction of small organic molecules. Their common preparation and characterization strategies are discussed, while emphasis is given to their applications for green sample preparation.

Sustainable Application of ZIF-8 for Heavy-Metal Removal in Aqueous Solutions

Water is life, and clean-water demand is increasing daily as a result of rapid population growth and industrial evolution. Nevertheless, due to the inadequate supply and availability of new water sources, there is a need for effective, sustainable removal of contaminants for wastewater reuse. Several treatment approaches that include chemical, physical, and biological methods have been thoroughly tested, with biological treatment being regarded as the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly method. However, the presence of heavy metals and complicated chemicals that are nonbiodegradable limits the use of this cost-effective approach. In this paper, we review the sustainable application of a cheap, water-stable metal-organic framework, the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8), with an easier synthesis approach for heavy-metal removal in aqueous solutions. In this review, we discuss the removal efficiency in terms of adsorption capacity, describe the underlying mechanism behind the adsorption capacity of ZIF-8, present a sustainable synthesis approach, and make vital suggestions to aid in the future application of ZIF-8 for the removal of heavy metals.

Magnetic solid-phase extraction of caffeine from surface water samples with a micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe3O4 nanocomposite prior to its determination by GC-MS

A novel micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe₃O₄ (Bm) composite was synthesized from the active charcoal precursor BAX-1500 and used in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of caffeine prior to its determination by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main factors affecting the extraction and desorption steps of the MSPE procedure were investigated and optimized. These factors include extraction time, sorbent mass and salt addition for the adsorption step and type of eluent, desorption time and volume of desorption solution for the desorption step. Under optimum conditions, the absolute extraction recovery was found to be 91.1% and good linearity was observed in the investigated concentration range of 0.6–12.5 ng mL⁻¹ (R² = 0.9997). The limit of detection was 0.18 ng mL⁻¹ and the limit of quantification was 0.60 ng mL⁻¹. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of surface water samples. The proposed MSPE method is simple, rapid, sensitive and environmentally friendly.

A novel magnetic solid phase material based on a micro–meso porous activated carbon/Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite was used to extract caffeine from surface water samples. The method is efficient and rapid, and has minimum solvent consumption.

Gold-like Thiolate-Protected Ultrasmall Cubic Copper Nanocluster-Based Metal-Organic Framework as a Selective Catalyst for Stepwise Synthesis of Unsymmetric Bistriazole by Click Reaction

We report a facile synthesis of a thiolate-protected water-soluble ultrasmall cubic copper nanocluster-based metal-organic framework (CuMOF) as an efficient and chemoselective catalyst for the azide-alkyne click reaction. Interestingly, the diffuse reflectance spectra of CuMOFs exhibit three discrete plasmon bands at 463, 505, and 674 nm, which are similar to those corresponding to the fingerprint region of thiolate-protected atomically precise Au₂₅ nanoclusters; hence, CuMOFs are termed as gold-like ultrasmall cubic copper nanoclusters. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirm the cubic morphology of CuMOFs with nanoclusters showing particle size distribution of ∼2-12 nm. The matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) spectrum of CuMOFs is attributed to the individual particles consisting of few Cu_n(SR)_m with Cu(0) core atoms and Cu(I)SR staples, i.e., Cu₂(SR)₄, Cu(SR)₆, Cu₃(SR)₇, and Cu₄(SR)₈. To our surprise, the unsymmetric bistriazoles resulting from the click reaction of bifunctional azides and alkynes in the presence of CuMOFs were achieved by step-by-step conversion of the terminal azide selectively with maximum yield in the range of 70-88%. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption studies confirm the size-dependent surface area, pore volume, and pore size for the CuMOFs prepared by varying metal-to-ligand ratios. The plausible mechanism for the selective mono-click at CuMOFs suggests the existence of bifunctional terminal interactions via thiol and sulfonate groups that might have provided the site-isolation-based active sites for selective catalysis. The easy recovery of CuMOFs and their reusability up to 5 times without significant loss of activity are very promising for the selective organic conversions in pharmaceutical and industrial formulations.

Synthesis of Magnetic Metal-Organic Frame Material and Its Application in Food Sample Preparation

A variety of contaminants in food is an important aspect affecting food safety. Due to the presence of its trace amounts and the complexity of food matrix, it is very difficult to effectively separate and accurately detect them. The magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites with different structures and functions provide a new choice for the purification of food matrix and enrichment of trace targets, thus providing a new direction for the development of new technologies in food safety detection with high sensitivity and efficiency. The MOF materials composed of inorganic subunits and organic ligands have the advantages of regular pore structure, large specific surface area and good stability, which have been thoroughly studied in the pretreatment of complex food samples. MMOF materials combined different MOF materials with various magnetic nanoparticles, adding magnetic characteristics to the advantages of MOF materials, which are in terms of material selectivity, biocompatibility, easy operation and repeatability. Combined with solid phase extraction (SPE) technique, MMOF materials have been widely used in the food pretreatment. This article introduced the new preparation strategies of different MMOF materials, systematically summarizes their applications as SPE adsorbents in the pretreatment of food contaminants and analyzes and prospects their future application prospects and development directions.

Recent Applications of Magnetic Nanoparticles in Food Analysis

Nanotechnology has become a topic of interest due to the outstanding advantages that the use of nanomaterials offers in many fields. Among them, magnetic nanoparticles (m-NPs) have been one of the most widely applied in recent years. In addition to the unique features of nanomaterials in general, which exclusively appear at nanoscale, these present magnetic or paramagnetic properties that result of great interest in many applications. In particular, in the area of food analysis, the use of these nanomaterials has undergone a considerable increase since they can be easily separated from the matrix in sorbent-based extractions, providing a considerable simplification of the procedures. This allows reducing cost and giving fast responses, which is essential in the food trade to guarantee consumer safety. These materials can also be easily tunable, providing higher selectivity. Moreover, their particular electrical, thermal and optical characteristics allow enhancing sensor signals, increasing the sensitivity of the approaches based on this type of device. The aim of this review article is to summarise the most remarkable applications of m-NPs in food analysis in the last five years (2016–2020) showing a general view of the use of such materials in the field.

Sample Preparation Using Graphene-Oxide-Derived Nanomaterials for the Extraction of Metals

Graphene oxide is a compound with a form similar to graphene, composed of carbon atoms in a sp2 single-atom layer of a hybrid connection. Due to its significant surface area and its good mechanical and thermal stability, graphene oxide has a plethora of applications in various scientific fields including heterogenous catalysis, gas storage, environmental remediation, etc. In analytical chemistry, graphene oxide has been successfully employed for the extraction and preconcentration of organic compounds, metal ions, and proteins. Since graphene oxide sheets are negatively charged in aqueous solutions, the material and its derivatives are ideal sorbents to bind with metal ions. To date, various graphene oxide nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized and evaluated for the extraction and preconcentration of metal ions from biological, environmental, agricultural, and food samples. In this review article, we aim to discuss the application of graphene oxide and functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposites for the extraction of metal ions prior to their determination via an instrumental analytical technique. Applications of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents for the modification of graphene oxide and its functionalized derivatives are also discussed.

New Efficient Adsorbent Materials for the Removal of Cd(II) from Aqueous Solutions

The rapid increase of industrial activities leads to serious environmental pollution, especially, in aqueous systems and particularly with heavy metals. Cadmium, one of the most poisonous elements, is rapidly accumulated in the human body, therefore, the efficient removal of cadmium ions from wastewater is an urgent need. Coordination networks (CNs) and its subdivision metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), are structured porous composites which present various special properties. In this work two CNs were used as adsorbent materials for the removal of Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions. By the reaction of CoSO₄·7H₂O and NiSO₄·7H₂O with N,N-bis(phosphonomethyl)glycine (Gly) in hydrothermal conditions two CNs-Co-Gly and Ni-Gly- were synthesized, respectively. Cadmium adsorption onto the studied CNs was conducted in batch mode, and the effect of pH, initial concentration, contact time, temperature and sorbent weight on the sorption process were investigated. Parametric Method 3 (PM3)semi-empirical analyses of the CNs' structural properties were performed in order to predict the adsorption properties. For this reason, two octahedral models were calculated and computational predictions were compared with the experimental results. Both computational and experimental adsorption studies found that Ni-Gly presents higher affinity for cadmium ions. Moreover, the adsorbent materials can be readily regenerated and recycled without significant loss of cadmium uptake capacity.

Recent Advances in the Extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from Environmental Samples

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) comprise a group of chemical compounds consisting of two or more fused benzene rings. PAHs exhibit hydrophobicity and low water solubility, while some of their members are toxic substances resistant to degradation. Due to their low levels in environmental matrices, a preconcentration step is usually required for their determination. Nowadays, there is a wide variety of sample preparation techniques, including micro-extraction techniques (e.g., solid-phase microextraction and liquid phase microextraction) and miniaturized extraction techniques (e.g., dispersive solid-phase extraction, magnetic solid-phase extraction, stir bar sorptive extraction, fabric phase sorptive extraction etc.). Compared to the conventional sample preparation techniques, these novel techniques show some benefits, including reduced organic solvent consumption, while they are time and cost efficient. A plethora of adsorbents, such as metal-organic frameworks, carbon-based materials and molecularly imprinted polymers, have been successfully coupled with a wide variety of extraction techniques. This review focuses on the recent advances in the extraction techniques of PAHs from environmental matrices, utilizing novel sample preparation approaches and adsorbents.

Bioanalytical HPLC Applications of In-Tube Solid Phase Microextraction: A Two-Decade Overview

In-tube solid phase microextraction is a cutting-edge sample treatment technique offering significant advantages in terms of miniaturization, green character, automation, and preconcentration prior to analysis. During the past years, there has been a considerable increase in the reported publications, as well as in the research groups focusing their activities on this technique. In the present review article, HPLC bioanalytical applications of in-tube SPME are discussed, covering a wide time frame of twenty years of research reports. Instrumental aspects towards the coupling of in-tube SPME and HPLC are also discussed, and detailed information on materials/coatings and applications in biological samples are provided.

Novel Approaches Utilizing Metal-Organic Framework Composites for the Extraction of Organic Compounds and Metal Traces from Fish and Seafood

The determination of organic and inorganic pollutants in fish samples is a complex and demanding process, due to their high protein and fat content. Various novel sorbents including graphene, graphene oxide, molecular imprinted polymers, carbon nanotubes and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported for the extraction and preconcentration of a wide range of contaminants from fish tissue. MOFs are crystalline porous materials that are composed of metal ions or clusters coordinated with organic linkers. Those materials exhibit extraordinary properties including high surface area, tunable pore size as well as good thermal and chemical stability. Therefore, metal-organic frameworks have been recently used in many fields of analytical chemistry including sample pretreatment, fabrication of stationary phases and chiral separations. Various MOFs, and especially their composites or hybrids, have been successfully utilized for the sample preparation of fish samples for the determination of organic (i.e., antibiotics, antimicrobial compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc.) and inorganic pollutants (i.e., mercury, palladium, cadmium, lead, etc.) as such or after functionalization with organic compounds.

Metal organic frameworks decorated with free carboxylic acid groups: topology, metal capture and dye adsorption properties

In this report, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are designed and tuned for structural variations in order to induce metal capture which in turn directs dye adsorption properties. The three MOFs, Cu-MOF-2COOH, Ni-MOF-COOH and Cd-MOF, are synthesized by employing 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3-BTC) as the main ligand and 4,4'-dipyridyl (bipy) as the spacer. The MOFs have been characterized using various spectral techniques and single crystal X-Ray studies. A topological analysis using TOPOS Pro reveals that the MOFs possess varying topologies i.e.hcb, hxl, sql and 2C1. Cu-MOF-2COOH and Ni-MOF-COOH contain two and three uncoordinated carboxylic acid groups, respectively, and in Cd-MOF, all three -COOH groups are utilized in bonding. The dye adsorption properties of the MOFs with free carboxylate group(s) were checked and we found that both MOFs are unable to adsorb any of the dyes significantly. The free carboxylate group(s) in the MOFs inspire us to elaborate their metal capturing properties. In different solvents we checked the metal capturing properties of Cu-MOF-2COOH and Ni-MOF-COOH with different metal salts. Surprisingly, both MOFs show better metal capturing properties towards the hard and highly polarizing Fe3+ ion in aqueous medium. Theoretical studies show that the free carboxylate(s) are involved in binding with metals. The post synthetically modified materials (Fe@Cu-MOF-2COOH and Fe@Ni-MOF-COOH) were further checked for their dye adsorption properties and both the doped MOFs show better adsorption properties towards the MB and MO. Furthermore, three kinetic models were employed to understand the reaction mechanism of adsorption and the pseudo second order kinetic model fits the best in both cases. The uncoordinated carboxylate groups in the channels act as post synthetic modification sites for metal capture and the post synthetically modified material thus formed attracts organic dyes following the HSAB concept. The strong interaction existing between the hard Fe3+ ion and hard donors of the dyes is responsible for the enhanced adsorption.
