Abstract
Diabetes-induced kidney damage represents a substantial health hazard, emphasizing the imperative to explore potential therapeutic interventions. This study investigates the nephroprotective activity of flavonoid-rich extracts from Hibiscus sabdariffa leaves in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. The flavonoid-rich extracts of H. sabdariffa leaves was obtained using a standard procedure. The animals were induced with streptozotocin and thereafter treated with both low (LDHSFL) and high doses (HDHSFL) of flavonoid-rich extracts from H. sabdariffa leaves and metformin (MET), and other groups are diabetic control (DC) and normal control (NC). The study assesses diverse renal parameters, encompassing kidney redox stress biomarkers, serum electrolyte levels, kidney inflammatory biomarkers, serum concentrations of creatinine, urea, and uric acid, kidney phosphatase activities, renal histopathology, and relative gene expressions of kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) and transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-1β), comparing these measurements with normal and diabetic control groups (NC and DC). The findings indicate that the use of extracts from H. sabdariffa leaves markedly (p < 0.05) enhanced renal well-being by mitigating nephropathy, as demonstrated through the adjustment of various biochemical and gene expression biomarkers, indicating a pronounced antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effect, improved kidney morphology, and mitigation of renal dysfunction. These findings suggest that H. sabdariffa leaf flavonoid extracts exhibit nephroprotective properties, presenting a potential natural therapeutic approach for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract
Peritoneal loose body (PLB) is a kind of lesions located in the abdominal cavity or pelvic cavity, which is rare and difficult to diagnose. The diameter of PLB is mostly 0.5-2.5 cm. Most PLBS are asymptomatic. Here we reported a case of giant PLB in the pelvis and analyzed its structure and protein composition. Surgical exploration revealed a white oval mass (4.5*4*3 cm) in the pelvic cavity. After the mass was removed, the symptoms of hematuria disappeared and the patient was discharged on the second postoperative day. Histochemical staining showed that PLB was mainly composed of collagen and scattered calcification. The protein components of PLB were detected by proteome analysis, and a variety of proteins related to collagen deposition and calcification were identified in PLB.

Abstract
Homocysteine (Hcy) is a sulfur-containing nonessential amino acid derived from the intermediate metabolites of methionine. Methionine is obtained from dietary proteins, such as poultry, meat, eggs, seafood, and dairy products. Abnormalities in Hcy metabolic pathways, deficiencies in dietary methionine, folate, and vitamins B12, B6 and B2 and genetic defects, polymorphisms, or mutations in Hcy metabolism-related enzymes may lead to an increase in plasma Hcy levels. Generally, a plasma Hcy level higher than 10 μmol/L or 15 μmol/L has been defined as hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy). An individual with essential hypertension complicated with HHcy is considered to have H-type hypertension (HTH). Currently, HHcy is considered a novel independent risk factor for various cardiovascular diseases. To provide a useful reference for clinicians, the research progress on Hcy, HHcy and HTH in recent years was systematically reviewed here, with a focus on the source and metabolic pathways of Hcy, plasma Hcy levels and influencing factors, detection methods for plasma Hcy levels, relationship between Hcy concentration and hypertension, pathogenesis of HTH, cardiovascular complications of HTH, and treatment of HTH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current guideline-recommended multiparameters used to assess the risk levels of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) are invasive hemodynamic measurements or effort-dependent exercise tests. Serum natriuretic peptide is only one kind of effort-free biomarker that has been adopted for risk assessment. This study aimed to investigate the application of homocysteine as a non-invasive and effort-free measurement for the risk assessment of patients with PAH. METHODS Samples of 50 patients diagnosed with PAH via right heart catheterization were obtained, and the patients were divided into low-, intermediate- and high-risk groups for further analysis. Additionally, serum N-terminal prohormone of B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and homocysteine levels of monocrotaline (MCT)-induced PAH rats were analyzed at each week with progressed severity of PAH, and they were sacrificed on day 28 with pathology being assessed. RESULTS Hyperhomocysteinemia was an independent predictor (odds ratio [OR]: 1.256; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.002-1.574) and showed a linear correlation with NT-proBNP. Hyperhomocysteinemia could discriminate between low/intermediate and high-risk levels in PAH with a cut-off value in 12 μmol/L. Moreover, the elevated homocysteine levels by weeks in MCT rats also demonstrated the association between homocysteine and the severity of PAH. CONCLUSIONS Homocysteine can be a non-invasive and effort-free risk assessment for patients with pulmonary hypertension. Homocysteine level had a linear correlation with NT-proBNP level, and patients with hyperhomocysteinemia had a higher risk level, higher NT-proBNP level, and decreased lower diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide. The correlation between homocysteine level and PAH severity was also demonstrated in MCT rats.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effect of nuts in decreasing circulating levels of oxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDL). A literature search was performed of major electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science) from inception up to November 15th, 2021 to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the effect of different nuts on circulating levels of ox-LDL. The effect size was determined using standardized mean difference (SMD) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Evaluation of funnel plot, Begg's rank correlation, and Egger's weighted regression tests were used to assess the presence of publication bias in the meta-analysis. This systematic review and meta-analysis included 15 RCTs involving 997 subjects. Meta-analysis showed that nuts significantly decreased serum levels of ox-LDL. Besides, meta-regression results of the association between confounders such as duration of nuts consumption or delta LDL-cholesterol and levels of ox-LDL, were not significant. The correlation between nuts type and ox-LDL levels was significant in subgroup analyses suggesting the most significant effect of pistachios consumption on reducing the circulating concentrations of ox-LDL. To conclude, nuts consumption decreases the circulating concentrations of ox-LDL which might be beneficial for the prevention and/or progression of ASCVD.

Abstract
Homocysteine (Hcy) is a sulfur-containing non-proteinogenic amino acid, which arises from redox-sensitive methionine metabolism. In plants, Hcy synthesis involves both cystathionine β-lyase and S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase activities. Thus, Hcy itself is crucial for de novo methionine synthesis and S-adenosylmethionine recycling, influencing the formation of ethylene, polyamines, and nicotianamine. Research on mammalian cells has shown biotoxicity of this amino acid, as Hcy accumulation triggers oxidative stress and the associated lipid peroxidation process. In addition, the presence of highly reactive groups induces Hcy and Hcy derivatives to modify proteins by changing their structure and function. Currently, Hcy is recognized as a critical, independent hallmark of many degenerative metabolic diseases. Research results indicate that an enhanced Hcy level is also toxic to yeast and bacteria cells. In contrast, in the case of plants the metabolic status of Hcy remains poorly examined and understood. However, the presence of the toxic Hcy metabolites and Hcy over-accumulation during the development of an infectious disease seem to suggest harmful effects of this amino acid also in plant cells. The review highlights potential implications of Hcy metabolism in plant physiological disorders caused by environmental stresses. Moreover, recent research advances emphasize that recognizing the Hcy mode of action in various plant systems facilitates verification of the potential status of Hcy metabolites as bioindicators of metabolism disorders and thus may constitute an element of broadly understood biomonitoring.

Analysis of Clinical Characteristics and Influencing Factors for H-Type Hypertension Complicated with Other Chronic Diseases in a Community in Beijing. Abstract
Objective. The aim of the study is to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with H-type hypertension complicated with other chronic diseases in a community in Beijing and to explore the influencing factors related to the occurrence of the disease by means of a case-control study. Methods. A questionnaire was designed. 362 residents with H-type hypertension in a community in Beijing were randomly enrolled from January 2020 to December 2021. The general data and clinical indexes of the patients were collected and their clinical characteristics were analyzed. According to the complications of other chronic diseases, they were divided into the simple hypertension group (n = 65) and the other chronic disease group (n = 297). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to analyze the influencing factors for H-type hypertension patients with other chronic diseases. Results. Among the 362 H-type hypertension patients, 21 cases were aged 35–45 years, 35 cases were aged 45–55 years, and 127 cases were aged 55–65 years. The number of patients aged ≥65 years was 179, and the number of patients aged ≥55 years accounted for the highest proportion with a constituent ratio of 85.00%. Only 65 patients were patients with simple hypertension. The remaining 297 patients were complicated with different kinds of chronic diseases. The types of chronic diseases include malignant tumors, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary heart disease, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and stroke. The proportion of H-type hypertension complicated with coronary heart disease, diabetes, and stroke is higher. Among the 297 patients, most of them were local, resident, and nonagricultural patients with a constituent ratio of 89.90%, 95.96%, and 98.98%, respectively. The prevalence rate of the male was 59.60% higher than that of the female at 40.40%. The blood types B and AB were more common. 90.57% of patients were married and the proportion of body mass index (BMI) was 45.79%. 60.61% of patients had a history of smoking, 55.56% had a history of drinking, 35.02% had a regular physical examination, 14.81% had regular exercise, and 37.71% had a light diet. There were significant differences in marital status, smoking, alcohol consumption, regular exercise, and light diet between the simple hypertension group and the chronic disease group (
). The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that smoking, drinking, little exercise, and not eating lightly were the independent risk factors for other chronic diseases (
). Conclusion. The incidence of H-type hypertension is higher in people ≥55 years old. Most of them are accompanied by three other chronic diseases: smoking, drinking, little exercise, and no light diet are also risk factors for chronic diseases.

Abstract
Calluna vulgaris, belonging to the Ericaceae family, is an invasive plant that has widely spread from Europe all across Asia, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Being able to survive in rigid soil and environmental conditions, it is nowadays considered to be of high nature-conservation value. Known for its nutritional and medicinal properties, C. vulgaris stands out for its varied physiochemical composition, spotlighting a wide range of biological activity. Among the most important bioactive compounds identified in C. vulgaris, the phenolic components found in different parts of this herbaceous plant are the main source of its diverse pro-health properties (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, chemoprotective, etc.). Nonetheless, this plant exhibits an excellent nectariferous potential for social insects such as honeybees; therefore, comparing the bioactive compounds observed in the plant and in the final product of the beehive, namely honey, will help us understand and find new insights into the health benefits provided by the consumption of C. vulgaris-related products. Thus, the main interest of this work is to review the nutritional profile, chemical composition and biological activities of the C. vulgaris plant and its related honey in order to encourage the future exploration and use of this health-promoting plant in novel foods, pharmacological products and apitherapy.

Abstract
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a famous dietary spice rich in bioactive components like gingerols, and it has been used for a long time as food and medicine. Indeed, clinical studies have confirmed the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of ginger. Thus, ginger seems to be an excellent complementary nutritional strategy for non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease. This narrative review aims to discuss the possible effects of ginger on the mitigation of common complications such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and gut dysbiosis in NCD.

Abstract
Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the myocardium that mostly affects young adults. The disease is commonly caused by viral infection, medications, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory conditions. Nearly 50% of the cases of myocarditis are due to post-viral immune response in a setting of an identifiable or non-identifiable infection. The clinical manifestation is nonspecific ranging from asymptomatic courses to sudden death in infants and young patients. This review describes the properties of phytochemicals as plant-derived active ingredients which can be used in the prevention and treatment of myocarditis and its associated risk factors. Meanwhile, it has illustrated epidemiological analyses, mechanism of action, and the metabolism of phytochemicals in animal and human clinical trials. We also mentioned the precise mechanism of action by which phytochemicals elicit their anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects and how they regulate signal transduction pathways. Nevertheless, comprehensive clinical trials are required to study the properties of phytochemicals in vivo, in vitro, and in silico for a proper management of myocarditis. Our findings indicate that phytochemicals function as potent adjunctive therapeutic drugs in myocarditis and its related complications.

Abstract
Known especially for its negative ecological impact, Fallopia japonica (Japanese knotweed) is now considered one of the most invasive species. Nevertheless, its chemical composition has shown, beyond doubt, some high biological active compounds that can be a source of valuable pharmacological potential for the enhancement of human health. In this direction, resveratrol, emodin or polydatin, to name a few, have been extensively studied to demonstrate the beneficial effects on animals and humans. Thus, by taking into consideration the recent advances in the study of Japanese knotweed and its phytochemical constituents, the aim of this article is to provide an overview on the high therapeutic potential, underlining its antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects, among the most important ones. Moreover, we describe some future directions for reducing the negative impact of Fallopia japonica by using the plant for its beekeeping properties in providing a distinct honey type that incorporates most of its bioactive compounds, with the same health-promoting properties.
