Neurological Applications of Celery (Apium graveolens): A Scoping Review

Investigating the antidiabetic properties of Apium graveolens extract and its inhibition of enzymes associated with hyperglycemia

BACKGROUND

Apium graveolens Linn., also known as celery, is a member of the Apiaceae family and has shown promising pharmacological properties, including diabetes. Indeed, the current investigation aimed to investigate the potential inhibitory effects of A. graveolens seed aqueous extract on the digestive enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism and its efficiency in reducing blood sugar levels in diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin.

METHODS

I administered oral doses of an aqueous extract from A. graveolens seeds to both normal and diabetic animals to evaluate acute toxicity and its potential antidiabetic effects. I observed the glycemia and body weight of the animals for four weeks. In vitro tests were also done to see how the seed extract affected the activities of α-amylase and α-glucosidase. Following administration of the extract, diabetic mice showed a notable reduction in blood glucose concentration. This reduction was similar to the standard metformin treatment after two and four weeks. Moreover, A. graveolens demonstrated significant inhibitory effects on α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity, with IC50 values of 840.15 ± 0.02 and 114.81 ± 0.05, respectively. At 500 mg/kg/day, histological analysis indicated degenerative alterations in pancreatic islet cells. These results indicate that the aqueous extract derived from the seeds of A. graveolens possesses promising antihyperglycemic properties in diabetic mice, along with notable inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity. Further investigation is needed to characterize the active compounds present in A. graveolens seeds.

Egyptian aquaponic celery (Apium graveolens): Phenolic and volatile profiles analysed using HPLC-MS/ms and gc-ms/ms

Recently, water scarcity has been a substantial problem facing agriculture in Egypt, with a great impact on food security and hence makes it a challenge to satisfy food demand. An aquaponic system with minimum water needs is considered a substitute technique to meet the demand of food shortages. Celery (Apium graveolens) is a widely cultivated herb belonging to the family Apiaceae and widely consumed as a popular ingredient in a wide range of dishes and food recipes. A total of 13 phenolic metabolites were detected and quantified using HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. Chlorogenic acid was detected as the most abundant phenolic compound accounting for 3471.58 mg kg-1. Moreover, 65 volatile compounds belonging to 12 different classes were detected using GS-MS with an abundance of aromatic hydrocarbons at ca.68.15%. and the main constituents were 6-phenyltridecane, 6-phenyldodecane, and 5-phenylundecane at ca.6.78%, 6.62%, and 6.13% respectively. It is the first time to report metabolic profile in celery grown in an aquaponic system.

Antihypertensive Property of Celery: A Narrative Review on Current Knowledge

Background

The incidence of hypertension is increasing significantly on a global scale, and it is considered the leading cause of heart disease and death. Despite the availability of hypotensive drugs, they have many side effects that decrease adherence to treatments and lead to uncontrolled blood pressure. Studies have revealed that celery contains bioactive compounds that oppose hypotensive effect.

Methods

A thorough literature review was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. To identify relevant studies on the topic, our search strategy employed keywords such as "celery," "Apium gravenols L," "hypertension," "high blood pressure," "apigenin," "antihypertensive," and "hypotensive." The search was limited to articles published between January 2013 and December 2023. The inclusion criteria were original research articles that involved both animal and human subjects, published in English, and reported results applicable to the subject of this review. Review articles or articles in the form of theses or books were excluded.

Results

The available evidence revealed that celery enhances blood pressure parameters. Clinical trials clarified that celery possesses its effect through many bioactive compounds, specifically 3-n-butylphthalide and apigenin. Based on animal and human studies, celery seems to elicit blood pressure regulation mainly by the vasodilatory, diuretic, and calcium channel-blocking properties. Furthermore, celery seed extract seems to exert a bradycardia effect.

Conclusion

The current literature review showed a considerable number of studies on the hypertensive models, which confirmed that celery and its extracts are effective hypotensive agents. Some limitations in comparing published data should be considered, including differences in doses, extracts, species of celery, and administration form.
