Synthesis and Characterization of MWCNT-COOH/Fe3O4 and CNT-COOH/Fe3O4/NiO Nanocomposites: Assessment of Adsorption and Photocatalytic Performance

Spindle shaped Fe-Ni metal organic frameworks wrapped with f-MWCNTs for the efficacious sensing of tartrazine

A facile hydrothermal route was employed for the synthesis of iron-nickel bimetal organic frameworks (Fe-Ni bi-MOFs) and composite with an acid functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe-Ni MOF/f-MWCNTs) for electrochemical detection of tartrazine. The as-prepared Fe-Ni MOF/f-MWCNTs was confirmed by the several physicochemical studies. A micro spindle shaped, highly porous, and crystalline Fe-Ni MOF/f-MWCNTs was noticed. The high sensitivity and stability of Fe-Ni MOF/f-MWCNTs/GCE modified electrode was analyzed. Due to its high porosity nature, the analyte molecule effectively gets adsorbed on the modified electrode and undergo electrochemical oxidation effectively. The modified electrode exhibits low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) as 0.04 × 10-6 mol/L and 0.13 × 10-6 mol/L towards tartrazine. These results reveal the potential applications of Fe-Ni MOF/f-MWCNTs/GCE as modified electrode material for sensitive detection of tartrazine along with its robust reproducibility, stability, and effective sensing properties.

Magnetic superhydrophobic cellulose nanofibril based aerogel with rope-ladder like structure incorporating both superelasticity and excellent oil absorption

Achieving an equilibrium between exceptional oil absorption and remarkable elasticity has emerged as a formidable challenge for magnetic porous materials designed for oil absorption. Here, we propose an original, magnetic and superhydrophobic cellulose nanofibril (CNF) based aerogel system with a rope-ladder like skeleton by to greatly improve the issue. Within this system, CNF as the skeleton was combined with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT)@Fe3O4 as the magnetic and enhanced component, both methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and acetonitrile-extracted lignin (AEL) as the soft-hard associating constituents. The resultant CNF based aerogel shows a rope-ladder like pore structure to contribute to high elasticity and excellent oil absorption (28.34-61.09 g/g for various oils and organic solvents) under the synergistic effect of Fe3O4@MWCNT, AEL and MTMS, as well as good specific surface area (27.97 m2/g), low density (26.4 mg/cm3). Notably, despite the introduced considerable proportion (0.5 times of mass-CNF) of Fe3O4@MWCNT, the aerogel retained an impressive compression-decompression rate (88%) and the oil absorption efficiency of above 87% for various oils due to the soft-hard associating structure supported by both MTMS and AEL. This study provides a prospective strategy to balance between high elasticity and excellent oil absorption of CNF based aerogel doping inorganic particles.

Electrochemical Detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ with Sensors Based on Carbonaceous Nanomaterials and Fe3O4 Nanoparticles

Two electrochemical sensors were developed in this study, with their preparations using two nanomaterials with remarkable properties, namely, carbon nanofibers (CNF) modified with Fe3O4 nanoparticles and multilayer carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) modified with Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The modified screen-printed electrodes (SPE) were thus named SPE/Fe3O4-CNF and SPE/Fe3O4-MWCNT and were used for the simultaneous detection of heavy metals (Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+). The sensors have been spectrometrically and electrochemically characterized. The limits of detection of the SPE/Fe3O4-CNF sensor were 0.0615 μM, 0.0154 μM, 0.0320 μM and 0.0148 μM for Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+, respectively, and 0.2719 μM, 0.3187 μM, 1.0436 μM and 0.9076 μM in the case of the SPE/ Fe3O4-MWCNT sensor (following optimization of the working parameters). Due to the modifying material, the results showed superior performance for the SPE/Fe3O4-CNF sensor, with extended linearity ranges and detection limits in the nanomolar range, compared to those of the SPE/Fe3O4-MWCNT sensor. For the quantification of heavy metal ions Cd2+, Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ with the SPE/Fe3O4-CNF sensor from real samples, the standard addition method was used because the values obtained for the recovery tests were good. The analysis of surface water samples from the Danube River has shown that the obtained values are significantly lower than the maximum limits allowed according to the quality standards specified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and those of the World Health Organization (WHO). This research provides a complementary method based on electrochemical sensors for in situ monitoring of surface water quality, representing a useful tool in environmental studies.

Exploration of anode candidacy of Ni0.2Co2.8O4 and integrated Ni0.2Co2.8O4/MWCNTs in supercapacitor and oxygen evolution reaction

In the current research work, Ni0.2Co2.8O4 and Ni0.2Co2.8/MWCNTs have been synthesized via facile sol-gel and wet impregnation method. The synthesized materials attained the crystalline structures as evident from X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The uniform morphology and well dispersion of Ni0.2Co2.8O4 onto MWCNTs was observed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical investigations for supercapacitor application by cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed that, among both materials, Ni0.2Co2.8O4/MWCNTs has high specific capacitance (CV; 505.8 Fg-1 at 5 mV/s, GCD; 1598 Fg-1 at 0.5 A/g), greater capacitance retention (85 %) at 1000 cycles and has lower charge transfer resistance (Rct; 3.48 Ω cm2). These findings reflected the potential candidacy of Ni0.2Co2.8O4/MWCNTs to be used as anode material in supercapacitor. Further investigations by CV and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in 1.0 M KOH showed comparatively low over potential of 340 mV @100 mA/cm2 for the same integrated material. Additionally, the lower Tafel slope (47 mV/dec) and solution resistance authenticated it as an appropriate electrocatalyst for OER in water splitting. The CPE (controlled potential electrolysis) revealed the stability of both materials for OER in water oxidation.

Immobilized nickel boride nanoparticles on magnetic functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes: a new nanocomposite for the efficient one-pot synthesis of 1,4-benzodiazepines

In this study, a new magnetic nanocomposite consisting of Ni2B nanoparticles anchored on magnetic functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Fe3O4/f-MWCNT/Ni2B) was synthesized and characterized using various techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, FESEM, SEM-based EDX, SEM-based elemental mapping, HRTEM, DLS, SAED, XPS, BET, TGA, and VSM. The as-prepared magnetic nanocomposite was successfully employed for the preparation of bioactive 1,4-benzodiazepines from the three-component reaction of o-phenylenediamine (1), dimedone (2), and different aldehydes (3), in polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400) as a solvent at 60 °C. The obtained results demonstrated that the current one-pot three-component protocol offers many advantages, such as good-to-excellent yields within acceptable reaction times, favorable TONs and TOFs, eco-friendliness of the procedure, easy preparation of the nanocomposite, mild reaction conditions, a broad range of products, excellent catalytic activity, green solvent, and reusability of the nanocomposite.

Nonlinear Optical Properties of Zn(II) Porphyrin, Graphene Nanoplates, and Ferrocene Hybrid Materials

Following some previous work by some of us on the second order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of Zn(II) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnP), fullerene, and ferrocene (Fc) diads and triads, in the present research, we explore the NLO response of some new hybrids with two-dimensional graphene nanoplates (GNP) instead of a zero-dimensional fullerene moiety as the acceptor unit. The experimental data, collected by Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic generation (EFISH) technique in CH2Cl2 solution with a 1907 nm incident wavelength, combined with Coupled-Perturbed (CP) and Finite Field (FF) Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, show a strongly enhanced contribution of the cubic electronic term γ(-2ω; ω, ω, 0), due to the extended π-conjugation of the carbonaceous acceptor moiety.

Fe3O4-multiwalled carbon nanotubes-bentonite as adsorbent for removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions

The contamination of water due to present of dyes, poses serious health problems. Therefore, treatment of contaminated water is necessary to resolve this problem. A tailored co-precipitation technique has been successfully used to prepare Fe₃O₄-multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs)-Bentonite nanocomposite. The methylene blue present in aqueous solutions was removed using synthesized nanocomposite as adsorbent. The synthesized novel nanocomposite was analyzed by various characterization techniques. The scanning electron microscope analysis shows that Bentonite and Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles are well decorated with the MWCNTs matrix. The nanocomposite exhibited a high BET surface area of 204.01 m²/g with a pore volume of 0.367 cm³/g. The BJH adsorption average pore diameter was analyzed to be 7.2 nm. Moreover, the adsorption model was in agreement with the Redlich-Peterson model with adsorption capacity of 48.2 mg/g with a high nonlinear regression coefficient (R² = 0.985) and a low chi-square value (χ² = 6.18). Kinetics data were described well by pseudo-first-order and pseudo second order, models with a high non-linear regression coefficient (R² = 0.993). Adsorption of MB dye was determined to be a non-spontaneous and endothermic process since the values of ΔG, and ΔH were positive, and the entropy value was negative. Thus, the synthesized nanocomposite established itself as a promising candidate for the water treatment process.

The Antibacterial Properties of Nanocomposites Based on Carbon Nanotubes and Metal Oxides Functionalized with Azithromycin and Ciprofloxacin

Different microorganisms are present in nature, some of which are assumed to be hazardous to the human body. It is crucial to control their continuing growth to improve human life. Nanomaterial surface functionalization represents a current topic in continuous evolution that supports the development of new materials with multiple applications in biology, medicine, and the environment. This study focused on the antibacterial activity of different nanocomposites based on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes against four common bacterial strains. Two metal oxides (CuO and NiO) and two antibiotics (azithromycin and ciprofloxacin) were selected for the present study to obtain the following nanocomposites: MWCNT-COOH/Antibiotic, MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/Antibiotic, and MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/MO/Antibiotic. The present study included two Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis) and two Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). Ciprofloxacin (Cip) functionalized materials (MWCNT-COOH/Fe₃O₄/Cip) were most efficient against all tested bacterial strains; therefore, we conclude that Cu and Ni reduce the effects of Cip. The obtained results indicate that the nanocomposites functionalized with Cip are more effective against selected bacteria strains compared to azithromycin (Azi) functionalized nanocomposites. The current work determined the antibacterial activities of different nanocomposites and gave fresh insights into their manufacture for future research regarding environmental depollution.
