Abstract
OBJECTIVE The proportion of older people has been enhanced in the past half-century around the world, consequently leading to the increasing overall prevalence of age-related health conditions. The present study aims to summarize the current evidence regarding the association between dietary diversity (DD) and the components of healthy aging. METHODS The databases, including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, were searched using relevant keywords and without date restrictions up to November 2023. All original articles written in English evaluating the association between DD and healthy aging components were eligible for this systematic review. RESULTS Totally, 2728 records were obtained in electronic search databases after removing duplicates and irrelevant studies based on the title and abstract; the full text of the 64 articles was critically screened, and 32 cross-sectional studies and 17 cohort studies were included in this review. Except for two cases, all of these studies (95.9%) reported that high DD was associated with lower cognitive and physical frailties, low sleep disturbance and mental disorders, and good nutritional status among the elderly population. CONCLUSION Findings suggest higher DD may contribute to healthy aging through improved nutrient intake and reduced risk of age-related diseases, but heterogeneity in study designs limits conclusive evidence. Enhancing healthy dietary behaviors for older people is suggested to increase their awareness and consequently DD. Further research is needed to confirm these results and the causal relationship.

Abstract
AIM Few studies have investigated the relationship between low dietary variety and clearly defined social isolation by gender. This study explored the association between dietary variety and social isolation, classified by operational definition, separately by gender in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study recruited respondents via mail. A total of 4798 participants aged ≥65 years participated in the on-site assessment. Social isolation was assessed by "lack of conversation," "lack of passive support," "lack of offering support," and "lack of social participation." Dietary variety was evaluated using the Dietary Variety Score (DVS). RESULTS The participants' median age was 73 (interquartile range 25-75: 69-77) years, and 2147 (44.7%) were male. After adjusting for covariates, with regard to male participants, a lack of offering support (β = -0.051, P = 0.019) and a lack of social participation (β = -0.089, P < 0.001) were associated with a low DVS. For female participants, only a lack of social participation was related to a low DVS (β = -0.067, P < 0.001). A lack of conversation and passive support were not associated with a low DVS for both genders (P >0.05). CONCLUSION The results indicate that encouraging social participation, regardless of gender, as well as preventing a lack of offering support for others among men, may contribute to improving individuals' DVS. Abstract
While many studies have described the association between cognitive decline and eating habits, little attention has been paid to its association with cheese intake. In this epidemiological study of 1035 community-dwelling women aged ≥ 65, we investigated the association between intake/type of cheese and cognitive function. The anthropometry, functional ability, and the frequency of food intake, including cheese, were assessed. The mini-mental state examination (MMSE) was used to assess cognitive function, and a score of 20-26 was operationally defined as mild cognitive decline. We found that the MMSE score was significantly different between the presence of cheese intake and not (cheese intake: 28.4 ± 1.9; non-cheese intake: 27.6 ± 2.4) and between those who consumed Camembert cheese and those who did not (Camembert cheese: 28.7 ± 1.4; others: 28.3 ± 2.0). After adjusting for confounders, multiple logistic regression identified four independent variables significantly associated with mild cognitive decline: Camembert cheese intake (odds ratio = 0.448, 95% confidence interval = 0.214-0.936), age, usual walking speed, and repetitive saliva swallowing test scores. Our results, while based on cross-sectional data from Japanese community-dwelling older women, identified the significant inverse association between Camembert cheese intake and mild cognitive decline.

Abstract
Dietary variety is associated with some health outcomes among older adults. Rural areas, however, often have difficulty accessing health information that influences dietary variety. This study aimed to identify patterns of health information sources by using latent class analysis and assess their association with dietary variety among older adults aged ≥ 75 in rural Japan (n = 411). Three patterns of health information sources were identified: multi-sources (29.7%), television-only (53.5%), and non-sources (16.8%). In the multi-sources pattern, more people used television, radio, and newspapers. The television-only pattern had mostly television users, with fewer other sources. The non-sources pattern had many reporting "none." Logistic regression analysis revealed that the multi-sources pattern has a significant positive effect on dietary variety compared with the non-sources pattern (odds ratio: 5.434, 95% confidence interval: 1.792-16.472), even after adjusting for socioeconomic factors and physical health status. These findings underscore the positive impact of broad access to health information on the dietary habits of older individuals. The study highlights the importance of promoting access to diverse health information sources to enhance dietary variety and overall well-being among rural older adults.

Abstract
We aimed to verify the characteristics of lifestyles and frailty among older adults during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This two-point cross-sectional study conducted a baseline survey (BL) in 2020 and a follow-up survey (FU) in 2023 with community-dwelling individuals aged ≥65 years in Japan. The 700 and 572 participants in the BL and FU were analyzed. We compared frailty occurrence and lifestyle characteristics between both surveys. In the BL and FU, 38.3 %, 52.4 %, and 9.3 % and 29.4 %, 59.4 %, and 11.2 % of the individuals were classified as robust, pre-frail, and frail, respectively, showing a significant decrease in the number of robust, and an increase in the number of pre-frail. A significant decrease in dietary intake was observed among robust individuals in the FU, with an overall significant decrease in communication opportunities in the BL. Therefore, lifestyle changes due to infection control measures may have a delayed impact on frailty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High dietary diversity has been found to be associated with frailty. However, the trajectory of dietary diversity intake in relation to frailty is unclear. METHODS Using the latent class trajectory modeling approach, we identified distinctive dietary variety trajectory groups among 2017 participants based on the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey acquired at four time points within a 10-year period. Frailty status was assessed using a frailty index comprising 37 health deficits. Dietary diversity was quantified using the dietary variety score (DVS), based on food category consumption frequency. Logistic regression analyses were employed to explore the association between DVS change trajectories and frailty. RESULTS This study identified two distinct DVS trajectories: "Moderate-Slow decline-Slow growth", encompassing 810 (40.16%) individuals, and "Moderate-Slow growth-Accelerated decline", including 1207 (59.84%) individuals. After adjusting for covariates, the odds ratio for DVS in the "Moderate-Slow decline-Slow growth" group was 1.326 (95% confidence interval: 1.075-1.636) compared to the "Moderate-Slow growth-Accelerated decline" group. The "Moderate-Slow decline-Slow growth" trajectory continued to decrease and was maintained at a low level in the early stages of aging. CONCLUSION Sustaining a high dietary diversity trajectory over time, particularly in the early stages of aging, could potentially decrease the risk of frailty among older Chinese adults.

Abstract
AIM This cross-sectional study had two aims: to assess the prevalence of oral frailty (OF), according to the Oral Frailty 5-Item Checklist (OF-5), among community-dwelling older adults; and to examine the associations among oral frailty, dietary variety, social engagement, and physical frailty. METHODS We pooled data from two population-based studies (the Otassha Study and the Itabashi Longitudinal Study on Aging). With the OF-5, OF is characterized by the presence of two or more of the following: (i) fewer teeth, (ii) difficulty in chewing, (iii) difficulty in swallowing, (iv) dry mouth, and (v) low articulatory oral motor skills. We calculated the OF prevalence for each sex. We assessed dietary variety, social engagement, and physical frailty. Generalized structural equation modeling was employed to investigate the associations among oral frailty, low dietary variety (dietary variety score ≤3), social isolation (Lubben Social Network Scale score <12), and physical frailty (Japanese version of the Cardiovascular Health Study score ≥3). RESULTS A total of 1206 individuals (626 women and 580 men) with a mean age of 74.7 years were included. The prevalence of OF was 36.7%, and it increased with age; however, there was no significant sex difference. OF was significantly indirectly associated with physical frailty via low dietary variety (odds ratio, 1.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.97) and social isolation (odds ratio, 1.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.94). CONCLUSIONS Two of five community-dwelling older adults exhibited OF. Low dietary variety and social isolation are potential underlying mechanisms through which OF is indirectly associated with physical frailty. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 371-377.

Abstract
AIM This study examined the associations between geriatric factors and decreased opportunities for conversation among older adults amid a period of self-restraint during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey was carried out in October 2020. The participants were 204 residents aged ≥65 years staying at a private care home in Kyoto city, Japan. Logistic regression analysis was carried out with the reduction of conversation opportunities as the dependent variable, and geriatric factors as independent variables after adjusting for age and sex. We compared the decreased frequency of opportunities between residents in the assisted living wing and in the nursing care wing of the private care home. RESULTS The percentages of respondents who reported a decrease in the opportunities for conversation among themselves were 43.9% for residents in the assisted living wing and 19.7% for those in the nursing care wing. After adjusting for age and sex, the opportunities for conversation was significantly associated with the basic activities of daily living (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.01-1.12), instrumental self-maintenance (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.08-1.46), intellectual activity (OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.09-1.66), depression (OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.04-1.23), depressive mood (OR 3.83, 95% CI 1.98-7.42), decreased motivation (OR 3.11, 95% CI 1.58-6.12), appetite loss (OR 4.32, 95% CI 1.54-12.07), swallowing function (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.00-1.10), chewing difficulty (OR 2.50, 95% CI 1.31-4.75) and eating alone (OR 2.5, 95% CI 1.35-4.62). CONCLUSION Decreased opportunities for conversation was more perceived among older adults with higher daily functioning, suggesting that it is associated with depressed mood, oral function and solitary eating. Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty contributes to adverse outcomes in older adults and places a heavy burden on healthcare resources. Dysphagia is associated with frailty, but the mechanisms by which dysphagia affects frailty in older adults are unclear. This study aimed to investigate a serial mediating effect of self-perceived oral health and self-reported nutritional status in the relationship between dysphagia and frailty among hospitalized older patients in China. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 1200 patients aged ≥ 65 years in the Department of Geriatrics, Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital. A structured face-to-face interview was used to survey the following questionnaires: General Information Questionnaire, Tilburg Frailty Indicators (TFI), Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10), 30mL Water Swallow Test (WST), Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI), and Short-Form Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA-SF). A total of 980 participants with complete data were included in the analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0 and Amos 28.0 software. Spearman's correlation analysis was used for correlation analysis of study variables. The results of the multivariate linear regression analysis for frailty were used as covariates in the mediation analysis, and the structural equation model (SEM) was used to analyze the mediating effects among the study variables. RESULTS Dysphagia, self-perceived oral health, self-reported nutritional status, and frailty were significantly correlated (P<0.001). Dysphagia was found to directly affect frailty (β = 0.161, 95%CI = 0.089 to 0.235) and through three significant mediation pathways: (1) the path through self-perceived oral health (β = 0.169, 95%CI = 0.120 to 0.221), accounting for 36.98% of the total effect; (2) the path through self-reported nutritional status (β = 0.050, 95%CI = 0.023 to 0.082), accounting for 10.94% of the total effect; (3) the path through self-perceived oral health and self-reported nutritional status (β = 0.077, 95%CI = 0.058 to 0.102), accounting for 16.85% of the total effect. The total mediation effect was 64.77%. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that dysphagia was significantly associated with frailty. Self-perceived oral health and self-reported nutritional status were serial mediators of this relationship. Improving the oral health and nutritional status of hospitalized older patients may prevent or delay the frailty caused by dysphagia.

Abstract
AIM We examined whether the addition of self-reported weight loss improves the accuracy of prediction of mortality caused by sarcopenia in heart failure (HF) patients. METHODS We enrolled 477 HF patients (mean age 77 years) who received combined assessment of sarcopenia and self-reported weight loss. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the criteria of the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. If the patients answered "yes" to the question "have you lost 2 kg or more in the past 6 months?", they were diagnosed as having self-reported weight loss. RESULTS Sarcopenia and self-reported weight loss coexisted in 32% of patients. During a median follow-up period of 763 days, 65 patients (15%) died. Kaplan-Meier curves showed a significantly higher rate of mortality in HF patients with both sarcopenia and self-reported weight loss than in HF patients with sarcopenia alone. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis showed that the coexistence of sarcopenia and self-reported weight loss is an independent predictor of mortality in HF patients. Inclusion of the coexistence of sarcopenia and self-reported weight loss in the baseline model consisting of established prognostic markers significantly improved both the net reclassification index and the integrated discrimination index. CONCLUSIONS The coexistence of sarcopenia and self-reported weight loss is a powerful predictor of mortality in HF patients. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 95-101.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Frailty is a pervasive condition among older people worldwide. Despite the association between higher protein intake and lower frailty risk has been well documented, older individuals encounter barriers to enhancing their protein consumption due to reduced appetite and impaired digestive capacity. This study aims to delve into the potential correlation between dietary protein diversity, protein patterns, and the risk of frailty among older Chinese individuals. DESIGN Prospective cohort study. SETTING Community-based. PARTICIPANTS 2,216 participants aged 65 and above and not frail at the baseline were recruited from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) dataset spanning from 2014 to 2018. MEASUREMENTS Dietary protein diversity was evaluated utilizing a protein diversity score (PDS), calculated based on the results of a food frequency questionnaire. Dietary protein patterns were identified by employing principal component analysis (PCA). Frailty was ascertained using a 40-item frailty index (FI) where FI > 0.21 indicated frailty. Logistic analysis was employed to investigate the association between dietary variables and frailty. RESULTS 541 participants were identified as frail after a 4-year follow-up. After adjusting for confounders, each 1-unit increase in PDS was linked to a 10% decrease in frailty risk. Compared to individuals with PDS ≤ 1, those with PDS scores of 2-3, 4-5, and 6 had lower risks of frailty, with OR (95% CI) of 0.78 (0.58-1.06), 0.58 (0.38-0.87), 0.42 (0.20-0.81), respectively (P trend = 0.038). Individuals who consistently maintained high PDS demonstrated a lower frailty risk in contrast to those who maintained low PDS (OR = 0.60, 95% CI, 0.41-0.87). Additionally, the "meat-fish" pattern exhibited a protective association with frailty, with OR Q4 versus Q1 (95% CI) of 0.54 (0.40-0.74), P trend < 0.001. CONCLUSION Maintaining a variety of dietary protein sources and following a "meat-fish" protein pattern might decrease the likelihood of frailty among the older Chinese population.
