Abstract
Tooth extraction is the most commonly performed oral surgical procedure, with a wide range of clinical indications. The oral cavity is a complex microenvironment, influenced by oral movements, salivary flow, and bacterial biofilms. These factors can contribute to delayed socket healing and the onset of post-extraction complications, which can burden patients' esthetic and functional rehabilitation. Achieving effective extraction socket healing requires a multidisciplinary approach. Recent advancements in materials science and bioengineering have paved the way for developing novel strategies. This review outlines the fundamental healing processes and cellular-molecular interactions involved in the healing of extraction sockets. It then delves into the current landscape of biomaterials for socket healing, highlighting emerging strategies and potential targets that could transform the treatment paradigm. Building upon this foundation, this review also presents future directions and identifies challenges associated with the clinical application of biomaterials for extraction socket healing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or ubiquinone is one of a cell's most important electron carriers during oxidative phosphorylation and many other cellular processes. As a strong anti-oxidant with further anti-inflammatory effects CoQ10 is of potential therapeutical value. The aim of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to investigate the effect of topical CoQ10 on early wound healing after recession coverage surgery using the modified coronally advanced tunnel (MCAT) and palatal connective tissue graft (CTG). MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty patients with buccal gingival recessions were evaluated after being randomly allocated to: 1) MCAT and CTG with topical application of a coenzyme Q10 spray for 21 days or 2) MCAT and CTG with placebo spray. Wound healing was evaluated by the early wound healing index (EHI). Patient-reported pain was analyzed by a 100-mm visual analogue scale (VAS) at day 2, 7, 14 and 21 post-surgically. Mean recession coverage, gain of keratinized tissue and esthetic outcomes were assessed at 6 months. RESULTS EHI and pain scores showed no significant differences. Time to recovery defined as VAS<10 mm was shorter in the test group. Mean root coverage after 6 months was 84.62 ± 26.57% and 72.19 ± 26.30% for test and placebo, p=0.052. Complete root coverage was obtained in 9 (60%) test and in 2 (13.3%) placebo patients. Increase in keratinized tissue width and esthetical outcomes were similar for both groups. CONCLUSION CoQ10 had no significant effect on early wound healing and on mean root coverage after 6 months. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Early wound healing: in young healthy patients with no inflammatory oral conditions topical CoQ10 does not improve early healing.

Abstract
Evaluation and comparison of the effect of platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), diode laser, and combination of PRF and diode laser on gingival blood perfusion and early bone formation of the extraction socket. Forty maxillary premolar sockets were randomized to four groups: control group, PRF group, diode laser group, and PRF + diode laser group. Gingival blood perfusion was measured at preoperative and postoperative 1, 3, 7, and 30 days. Fractal dimension analysis was performed immediately after the procedure and in the postoperative first month. Gingival perfusions significantly increased during 1 week compared to baseline for all groups with a mean of -4.43 ± 3.20, -5.99 ± 3.68, -5.45 ± 3.01, and -4.78 ± 2.82 respectively, and were at baseline 1 month later. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups at any time point. Although the increase of fractal dimension was higher in the PRF or diode laser group than in the control group with a mean of 0.085 ± 0.05, 0.100 ± 0.04, and 0.072 ± 0.04 respectively, no statistically significant differences were detected. Fractal dimension was significantly greater in PRF + diode laser group than in the control group with a mean of 0.138 ± 0.05 (p = 0.04). PRF, diode laser, and PRF + diode laser did not significantly affect the gingival perfusion, and the combined application of PRF and diode laser had positive effects on early bone regeneration in the extraction socket. PRF, diode laser, and PRF + diode laser provide better tissue healing of the extraction socket.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of topical phenytoin application on wound healing of extraction socket of albino Wistar rats. Materials and methods: Thirty-six albino Wistar rats were randomly divided into Group A (control), B (1% phenytoin mucoadhesive paste), and C (mucoadhesive paste without phenytoin). All animals were anesthetized followed by first molar extraction. Group A did not receive any agent, whereas, Group B and C received daily application of their respective pastes. Four animals from each group were sacrificed on day 7, 14, and 21 and analyzed histologically. Results: No significant difference was found in blood vessel count among the groups. Statistical increase in percentage of fibroblast in Group B was found as compared with other groups at day 7, whereas, no significant difference was found among groups at day 14. Day 21 showed significant decrease in percentage of fibroblasts in Group B (p-value < 0.001) as compared with Group A and C. Increase in percentage of bone trabeculae in Group B was observed on day 7, 14, and 21 with a significant difference (p-value < 0.05) as compared to Group A and C. Conclusion: Topical application of phenytoin promoted fibroblast proliferation and bone trabeculae formation during healing of extraction socket in rats.

Abstract
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) promotes wound healing in vitro and in vivo. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the promoting effects of CoQ10 on wound repair remain unknown. In the present study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms through which CoQ10 induces wound repair using a cellular wound-healing model. CoQ10 promoted wound closure in a dose-dependent manner and wound-mediated cell polarization after wounding in HaCaT cells. A comparison with other CoQ homologs, benzoquinone derivatives, and polyisoprenyl compounds suggested that the whole structure of CoQ10 is required for potent wound repair. The phosphorylation of Akt after wounding and the plasma membrane translocation of Akt were elevated in CoQ10-treated cells. The promoting effect of CoQ10 on wound repair was abrogated by co-treatment with a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor. Immunohistochemical and biochemical analyses showed that CoQ10 increased the localization of caveolin-1 (Cav-1) to the apical membrane domains of the cells and the Cav-1 content in the membrane-rich fractions. Depletion of Cav-1 suppressed CoQ10-mediated wound repair and PI3K/Akt signaling activation in HaCaT cells. These results indicated that CoQ10 increases the translocation of Cav-1 to the plasma membranes, activating the downstream PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, and resulting in wound closure in HaCaT cells.

Abstract
Encapsulation is a promising technological process enabling the protection of bioactive compounds against harsh storage, processing, and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) conditions. Legume proteins (LPs) are unique carriers that can efficiently encapsulate these unstable and highly reactive ingredients. Stable LPs-based microcapsules loaded with active ingredients can thus develop to be embedded into processed functional foods. The recent advances in micro- and nanoencapsulation process of an extensive span of bioactive health-promoting probiotics and chemical compounds such as marine and plant fatty acid-rich oils, carotenoid pigments, vitamins, flavors, essential oils, phenolic and anthocyanin-rich extracts, iron, and phytase by LPs as single wall materials were highlighted. A technical summary of the use of single LP-based carriers in designing innovative delivery systems for natural bioactive molecules and probiotics was made. The encapsulation mechanisms, encapsulation efficiency, physicochemical and thermal stability, as well as the release and absorption behavior of bioactives were comprehensively discussed. Protein isolates and concentrates of soy and pea were the most common LPs to encapsulate nutraceuticals and probiotics. The microencapsulation of probiotics using LPs improved bacteria survivability, storage stability, and tolerance in the in vitro GIT conditions. Moreover, homogenization and high-pressure pretreatments as well as enzymatic cross-linking of LPs significantly modify their structure and functionality to better encapsulate the bioactive core materials. LPs can be attractive delivery devices for the controlled release and increased bioaccessibility of the main food-grade bioactives.

Abstract
Objectives Postoperative intraperitoneal adhesions are an unsolved and important problem in abdominal surgery. In the present study, the probable preventive role of coenzyme-Q in the development of peritoneal adhesions was investigated. Material and Methods Sixteen Wistar Hannover male rats weighing 300-350 g were randomly separated into two groups of 8 rats each. The cecum was abraded with a sterile gauze until sub-serosal hemorrhage developed. A patch of peritoneum located opposite to the cecal abrasion was completely dissected. No treatment was given to Group 1. Group 2 received 30 mg/kg coenzyme-Q, which was injected 2 mL intraperitoneally. All the rats were sacrificed on the postoperative 21st day, and after adhesions were scored macroscopically, tissue specimens of the peritoneum and bowel were subjected to histopathological investigation. Tissue and blood specimens were also taken for biochemical analysis to investigate antioxidant efficiency. Results Adhesion scores were significantly different between the control group and the coenzyme-Q group (p= 0.001). According to the tissue levels of GSH-Px, MDA, and SOD levels, there was no significant difference between the study groups (p= 0.074, p= 0.208, p= 0.526). According to the plasma GSH-Px and SOD levels, there was significant difference between the groups (p= 0.002, p= 0.001), but the difference was not significant at MDA levels (p= 0.793). The differences between the pathological scores of the control and coenzyme-Q (p= 0.028 for fibrosis; p= 0.025 for inflammation) groups were statistically significant. Conclusion This study confirms that coenzyme-Q is the potential application in the prevention of early postoperative adhesions.

Abstract
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group comparative clinical study was conducted to examine the effects of ubiquinol (the reduced form of Coenzyme Q10) on secretion of saliva. This interventional study enrolled 40 subjects aged 65 years or younger who were healthy, but noted slight dryness of the mouth. Subjects were randomized with stratification according to gender and age to ingestion of gummy candy containing 50 mg of ubiquinol or placebo twice daily for 8 weeks. At the end of study, along with a significant increase of the CoQ10 level in saliva (p = 0.025*, d = 0.65), there was a significant increase of the saliva flow rate (p = 0.048*, d = 0.66) in the ubiquinol candy group (n = 18; 47.4±6.2 years; 6 men and 12 women) compared to the placebo group (n = 20; 52.2±7.7 years; 4 men and 16 women). The strength of the stomatognathic muscles was not significantly enhanced by ingestion of ubiquinol candy. Compared with baseline, significant improvement of the following four questionnaire items was observed in the ubiquinol group at the end of the study: feeling tired (p = 0.00506, d = -0.726), dryness of the mouth (p = 0.04799, d = -0.648), prone to catching a cold (p = 0.00577, d = -0.963), and diarrhea (p = 0.0166, d = -0.855). There were no serious adverse events. An in vitro study revealed that ubiquinol stimulated a significant and concentration-dependent increase of ATP production by a cell line derived from human salivary gland epithelial cells (p<0.05), while 1 nM ubiquinol significantly suppressed (p = 0.028) generation of malondialdehyde by cells exposed to FeSO4-induced oxidative stress. These findings suggest that ubiquinol increases secretion of saliva by suppressing oxidative stress in the salivary glands and by promoting ATP production. Trial Registration: UMIN-CTR UMIN000024406.

Abstract
Oxidative damage is the causal link to a multitude of pathologies, such as diabetes, arthritis, neuropathy, heart disease, and asthma. These conditions affect hundreds of millions of people nationwide, and billions worldwide. Even in otherwise healthy individuals, oxidative stress is a natural byproduct of metabolism that is augmented in "healthy" activities such as athletics. In many disease states, the pharmacological agents used to treat these conditions can induce oxidative damage and vitamin depletion. It is underappreciated by many that many of the most common medications prescribed result in oxidative stress. Therefore, physicians need to carefully scrutinize which medications their patients are on before surgery and treatment and during the recovery stage to obtain optimal healing results. We provide a review of the current literature of how oxidative damage and inflammation are linked to bone damage, Charcot neuroarthropathy, delayed wound healing, diabetic complications, and delayed flap consolidation. Where available, antioxidant intervention literature is offered to offset these conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of resveratrol on alveolar socket healing after tooth extraction in normal and cyclosporin A (CsA)-treated rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-two female Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into 4 groups of 18. Group 1 was injected with a placebo solution intraperitoneally. Group 2 was injected with resveratrol (10 μmol/kg) intraperitoneally. Groups 3 and 4 were injected with CsA (10 mg/kg) subcutaneously for 8 days once daily before tooth extraction. Next, the teeth were extracted and CsA injection continued until the animals were sacrificed. Eight days after commencing the CsA injections, group 4 was injected with resveratrol while continuing with CsA injections. Nine rats from each group were sacrificed on days 14 and 28, and sections were examined to assess the degree of inflammation, formation of connective tissue, and new bone formation. Immunohistochemical analysis was used to evaluate the alveolar socket healing process using osteocalcin and osteopontin markers. A P value less than .05 was considered significant. RESULTS There was more new bone formation in group 2 than in the other 3 groups on day 14 after tooth extraction (P < .05), and there was more new bone formation in group 2 than in groups 3 and 4 on day 28 after extraction (P < .05). Based on the immunohistochemical assessment, the amount of osteocalcin and osteopontin labeling was greater in group 2 compared with the other 3 groups on day 14 (P < .05); however, on day 28 after extraction, it was greater in group 4 compared with group 3 (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Resveratrol improves alveolar socket healing in normal and CsA-treated rats. Resveratrol also increases levels of osteocalcin and osteopontin in normal and CsA-treated rats. These results suggest that this natural compound is useful for alveolar socket healing after tooth extraction.

Abstract
Background: In this study, the effectiveness of dexpanthenol and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on the healing of ischemic colon anastomosis was investigated. Methods: Forty eight male Wistar Albino rats were divided into four equal groups (Sham-S, Sham-I, DXP, Q10). Following full layer colon resection, single layer colon anastomosis, without creating ischemia, was performed on the Sham-S group. The same experimental model was performed on remaining groups after ischemia was created. Intraperitoneal dexpanthenol and CoQ10 was administered to the DXP and Q10 groups once a day for three days. Ten days later, all colon anastomoses were investigated histopathologically and biochemically, as well as their burst pressure values, in all sacrificed rats. Results: The highest burst pressure value was observed in the Sham-S group, decreasing from high to low in the DXP, Q10, and Sham-I groups, respectively (p = 0.008). Furthermore, tissue hydroxyproline (p = 0.001) level values were significantly different among the groups. Additionally, histopathological analysis revealed a significant difference among groups regarding reepithelization (p = 0.027) and polymorphonuclear leukocyte density (p = 0.022). Conclusions: This preliminary study has shown that ischemia-reperfusion injury may impair the healing of colon anastomosis and it has been concluded that dexpanthenol and CoQ10 may have positive effects on the healing of ischemic colon anastomosis in rat, although re-epithelization may be adversely affected using CoQ10.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This research was conducted to assess the effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) intake on gene expression related to insulin, lipid and inflammation in subjects with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS This randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 40 subjects diagnosed with PCOS. Subjects were randomly allocated into two groups to intake either 100 mg CoQ10 (n = 20) or placebo (n = 20) per day for 12 weeks. Gene expression related to insulin, lipid and inflammation were quantified in blood samples of PCOS women with RT-PCR method. RESULTS Results of RT-PCR shown that compared with the placebo, CoQ10 intake downregulated gene expression of oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor 1 (LDLR) (p < 0.001) and upregulated gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) (p = 0.01) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of subjects with PCOS. In addition, compared to the placebo group, CoQ10 supplementation downregulated gene expression of interleukin-1 (IL-1) (p = 0.03), interleukin-8 (IL-8) (p = 0.001) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) (p < 0.001) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of subjects with PCOS. CONCLUSIONS Overall, CoQ10 intake for 12 weeks in PCOS women significantly improved gene expression of LDLR, PPAR-γ, IL-1, IL-8 and TNF-α.

Abstract
Background/purpose Tooth extraction is often followed by a number of different complications that demand additional treatment. In order to accelerate healing processes and decrease the complication occurrence various agents, growth factors, natural and synthetic antioxidants (e.g coenzyme Q10-CoQ10), are applied. Due to the partially known health-promoting effects of CoQ10 we decided to assess potential of it's encapsulated in nanoliposomes form on wound healing process following tooth extraction. Materials and methods Effects of free and encapsulated form of CoQ10 on wound healing processes after tooth extraction in rats, 3 and 7 days following surgical procedure, was studied by means of tissue biochemical (myeloperoxidase activity and nitric oxide (NO) concentrations) and pathohistological analysis. Results The obtained results indicate that the encapsulated form of CoQ10 compared to control and CoQ10 treated animals statistically significantly decreases inflammatory process estimated through myeloperoxidase activity and NO concentrations, as well as based on histopathological analysis 3 and 7 days following surgery. Conclusion The results of this study unequivocally prove that the encapsulation of CoQ10 in nanoliposomes enhances CoQ10 activity by accelerating wound healing process after tooth extraction.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of curcumin, a naturally occurring compound with numerous health-beneficial properties, on the wound-healing process of extraction sockets (soft tissue that surrounded the extracted tooth) in rats. The effects of topically applied curcumin were monitored by tracking changes in myeloperoxidase activity and nitric oxide concentrations in soft tissue homogenates 3 and 7 days following surgery. Additionally, pathohistological examination of tissue sections was used to reveal the effects of curcumin on the course of wound healing on a microscopic level. Compared to the untreated control, topically administered curcumin statistically significantly decreased soft-tissue myeloperoxidase activity and nitric oxide concentrations after both 3 and 7 days of application. Microscopic analysis showed a reduced inflammatory infiltrate (subjectively and morphometrically estimated as the number of polymorphonuclear cells/100 μm2) and an increased collagen deposition in rats treated with curcumin. The obtained results point to the great potential of curcumin in the acceleration of tooth extraction wound-healing processes partially through the reduction of the inflammatory response and increase in collagen deposition. Thus, these results significantly contribute to the previously suggested application of curcumin in the skin wound treatment by potentially broadening its usage in the treatment of mucosal wounds.

Abstract
(1) Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, and surgical resection is the main treatment for HCC. To date, no published study has examined the status of coenzyme Q10 in patients with HCC after surgery. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations between the level of coenzyme Q10, oxidative stress, and inflammation in patients with HCC after surgery; (2) Methods: 71 primary HCC patients were recruited. Levels of coenzyme Q10, vitamin E, oxidative stress (malondialdehyde), antioxidant enzymes activity (superoxidase dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase), and inflammatory markers (high sensitivity C-reactive protein; tumor necrosis factor-α; and interleukin-6) were measured; (3) Results: Patients with HCC had a significantly lower levels of coenzyme Q10 (p = 0.01) and oxidative stress (p < 0.01), and significantly higher levels of antioxidant enzymes activities and inflammation after surgery (p < 0.05). The level of coenzyme Q10 was significantly positively correlated with antioxidant capacity (vitamin E and glutathione peroxidase activity) and negatively correlated with inflammation markers after surgery; (4) Conclusion: Hepatocarcinogenesis is associated with oxidative stress, and coenzyme Q10 may be considered an antioxidant therapy for patients with HCC, particularly those with higher inflammation after surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth extraction causes an open wound in the soft and hard tissues. During the inflammatory phase of the healing process, a large amount of free radicals are produced and cause oxidative stress, which leads to tissue damage and delayed wound healing. Thus, in this study, we evaluated the effect of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), as an antioxidant, on the healing process of tooth sockets in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS To conduct this experimental study, male Wistar rats (n = 42) were divided into two groups. In each case, one upper second molar was extracted under general anesthesia. After the extraction, the tooth sockets of the experimental group were treated with a 0.02% TBHQ solution (0.1 ml) while the same volume of distilled water placed in the sockets of the control group. On days 3, 7, and 21 postoperatively, 7 rats from each group were euthanized, and histological slides were prepared from their tooth sockets. The prepared slides were examined histopathologically using a light microscope and compared using an independent two-sample t-test. The significance level was set at 0.05. RESULTS In the experimental group, a statistically significant (P = 0.003) increase in granulation tissue was observed on day 3, in comparison to the control group. The extent of bony trabeculation was also significantly higher in the TBHQ-treated group than in the control group on day 21 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Considering the limitations of an experimental study, it can be concluded that TBHQ may enhance the healing of the hard tissue in the tooth sockets.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether a Keap1-dependent oxidative stress detector-luciferase (OKD-LUC) mouse model would be useful for the visualization of oxidative stress induced by experimental periodontitis. A ligature was placed around the mandibular first molars for seven days to induce periodontitis. Luciferase activity was measured with an intraperitoneal injection of d-luciferin on days 0, 1, and 7. The luciferase activity in the periodontitis group was significantly greater than that in the control group at seven days. The expressions of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and malondialdehyde in periodontal tissue were significantly higher in the periodontitis group than in the control group. Immunofluorescent analysis confirmed that the nuclear translocation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) occurred more frequently in the periodontitis group than in the control group. This study found that under oxidative stress induced by experimental periodontitis, the Nrf2/antioxidant defense pathway was activated and could be visualized from the luciferase activity in the OKD-LUC model. Thus, the OKD-LUC mouse model may be useful for exploring the mechanism underlying the relationship between the Nrf2/antioxidant defense pathway and periodontitis by enabling the visualization of oxidative stress over time.
