Abstract
Stress-induced premature senescent (SIPS) cells induced by various stresses deteriorate cell functions. Dasatinib and quercetin senolytics (DQ) can alleviate several diseases by eliminating senescent cells. α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) is a widely used therapeutic approach for bone restoration but induces bone formation for a comparatively long time. Furthermore, bone infection exacerbates the detrimental prognosis of bone formation during material implant surgery due to oral cavity bacteria and unintentional contamination. It is essential to mitigate the inhibitory effects on bone formation during surgical procedures. Little is known that DQ improves bone formation in Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-contaminated implants and its intrinsic mechanisms in the study of maxillofacial bone defects. This study aims to investigate whether the administration of DQ ameliorates the impairments on bone repair inflammation and contamination by eliminating SIPS cells. α-TCP and LPS-contaminated α-TCP were implanted into Sprague-Dawley rat calvaria bone defects. Simultaneously, bone formation in the bone defects was investigated with or without the oral administration of DQ. Micro-computed tomography and hematoxylin-eosin staining showed that senolytics significantly enhanced bone formation at the defect site. Histology and immunofluorescence staining revealed that the levels of p21- and p16-positive senescent cells, inflammation, macrophages, reactive oxygen species, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive cells declined after administering DQ. DQ could partially alleviate the production of senescent markers and senescence-associated secretory phenotypes in vitro. This study indicates that LPS-contaminated α-TCP-based biomaterials can induce cellular senescence and hamper bone regeneration. Senolytics have significant therapeutic potential in reducing the adverse osteogenic effects of biomaterial-related infections and improving bone formation capacity.

Abstract
The delayed mucosal healing of tooth extraction sockets in diabetes has few known effective treatment strategies, and its underlying mechanism remains unknown. Senescent cells may play a pivotal role in this delay, given the well-established association between diabetes, senescent cells, and wound healing. Here, we demonstrated an increase in p21- or p16-positive senescent cells in the epithelial and connective tissues of extraction sockets in type 2 diabetic rats compared to those in control rats. Between 7 and 14 days after tooth extraction, a decrease in senescent cells and improvement in re-epithelialization failure were observed in the epithelium, while an increase in senescent cells and persistence of inflammation were observed in the connective tissue. These results suggest that cellular senescence may have been induced by diabetes and contributed to delayed mucosal healing by suppressing re-epithelization and persistent inflammation. These findings provide new targets for treatment using biomaterials, cells, and drugs.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of low-intensity one-legged electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) for skeletal muscle on arterial stiffness in EMS and non-EMS legs. Eighteen healthy subjects received two different protocols (Control (CT) and Experimental (ET) trials) in random order on separate days. EMS was applied to the left lower limb at 4 Hz for 20 min at an intensity corresponding to an elevation in pulse rate of approximately 15 beats/min (10.9 ± 5.1% of heart rate reserve). Before and after the experiment, arterial stiffness parameters in the control right leg (CRL) and control left leg (CLL) in CT and non-EMS leg (NEL) and EMS leg (EL) in ET were assessed by pulse wave velocity (baPWV, faPWV) and cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI). No significant changes in all parameters were observed in either leg in CT. Conversely, in ET, low-intensity, single-leg EMS significantly reduced CAVI, baPWV, and faPWV in the EL, but not in the NEL. Acute, low-intensity single-leg EMS reduces arterial stiffness only in the EL. These data support our idea that physical movement-related regional factors rather than systematic factors are important for inducing acute reductions in arterial stiffness.

Abstract
PURPOSE In patients with jaw bone atrophy, dental implant therapy requires bone augmentation on the alveolar ridge. Common methods are autologous bone transplantation or bone substitutes. The latter technique is less surgically invasive because it does not require bone harvesting; however, blood supply from the surrounding tissues and local differentiation of osteoblasts are not guaranteed, so adequate bone regeneration for dental implant therapy is often not achieved. Therefore, at our hospital we introduced a bone regenerative medicine technique that uses adipose stem cells (ASCs) from adipose tissue. The new approach is less surgically invasive and appears to have a better effect on bone regeneration. The current retrospective study aimed to demonstrate the efficacy of ASC transplantation in patients who underwent alveolar ridge bone augmentation at our hospital. METHODS We compared medical records, postoperative radiographic findings, and histological results from patients treated between January 2018 and March 2022 by augmentation of the jaw bone with bone substitutes (carbonate apatite) mixed with ASCs (ASCs+ group) and those treated with bone substitutes (carbonate apatite) alone (ASCs- group). RESULTS After 6 months, the survival rate of augmented bone and the gray scale value in dental cone beam computed tomography (a bone density index) were significantly higher in the ASCs+ group than in the ASCs- group. Histological analysis at 6 months showed more adequate bone tissue regeneration in the ASCs+ group. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest the effectiveness of using ASCs in bone augmentation on the alveolar ridge in patients with jaw bone atrophy.

Abstract
We previously demonstrated that neutral bicarbonate ionized water (NBIW) bathing enhances blood flow by bicarbonate ions and described the underlying mechanism. However, additional clinical investigation was warranted to investigate the efficacy of NBIW bathing. Hence, we performed a randomized, open-label, crossover trial to examine the effects of NBIW bathing on mental stress, sleep, and immune function. Participants who regularly felt stressed were randomly assigned to NBIW or regular bathing for 4 weeks. Mental stress was assessed with the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ) and the Profile of Mood States Second Edition; sleep quality, with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Japanese version (PSQI-J) and actigraphy; and immune function, with laboratory tests. PSQI-J scores and actigraphy sleep latency and bed out latency improved significantly more with NBIW bathing than with regular bathing (p < 0.05). Furthermore, NBIW bathing reduced both stress-induced fluctuations in CD4+ and CD8+ T cell counts and fluctuations in the naive to memory T cell ratio and neutrophil phagocytosis, indicating improved immune function. These findings suggest that daily NBIW bathing could improve mental stress, sleep quality, and immune function and bring about positive health effects in those who experience stress in their daily lives.

Abstract
This study radiologically and histologically compared two bioresorbable bone substitutes with different compositions carbonate apatite (Cytrans® Granules; CGs) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) for vertical bone augmentation on a rat skull using a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tubes. This PTFE tube was placed at the center of the skull, fixed with Super Bond, and augmented with CGs or β-TCP granules. Specimens with surrounding tissue were harvested at 4, 8, and 12 weeks postoperatively, and radiological and histological evaluations were performed. The bone volume to total volume ratio (BV/TV) of the β-TCP-implanted group was markedly higher than that of the CG-implanted group at 4 and 12 weeks postoperatively. Compared to CGs, β-TCP exhibited the ability to form blood vessels into the graft material for a short period after transplantation, as well as an elevated production of collagen into β-TCP granules during the bone formation process.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Immune checkpoint inhibitors can revive exhausted helper T-cells, and inflammatory cell reactivation may cause autoimmune disease-like conditions. Drug-induced arthritis is an immune-related adverse event, but the diagnostic approach is undefined. We present the diagnostic utility of 99m Tc-MDP bone scintigraphy for nivolumab-induced inflammatory arthritis. A 67-year-old man with hypopharyngeal carcinoma presented bilateral multiple metacarpophalangeal joint pain and swelling at each nivolumab administration. Regular imaging findings were atypical for inflammatory arthritis and did not fulfill the criteria for rheumatoid arthritis. We diagnosed nivolumab-induced inflammatory arthritis based on clinical symptoms and the symmetrical moderate uptake of the affected joints on 99m Tc-MDP bone scintigraphy.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is one of the most promising implant materials for hard tissues due to its similar elastic modulus; however, usage of PEEK is still limited owing to its biological inertness and low osteoconductivity. The objective of the study was to provide PEEK with the ability to sustain the release of growth factors and the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. The PEEK surface was sandblasted and modified with polydopamine (PDA). Moreover, successful sandblasting and PDA modification of the PEEK surface was confirmed through physicochemical characterization. The gelatin hydrogel was then chemically bound to the PEEK by adding a solution of glutaraldehyde and gelatin to the surface of the PDA-modified PEEK. The binding and degradation of the gelatin hydrogel with PEEK (GPEEK) were confirmed, and the GPEEK mineralization was observed in simulated body fluid. Sustained release of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 was observed in GPEEK. When cultured on GPEEK with BMP-2, human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) exhibited osteogenic differentiation. We conclude that PEEK with a gelatin hydrogel incorporating BMP-2 is a promising substrate for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Typhulaceae Jülich is one of the cold-adapted fungal families in basidiomycetes. The representative genera, Typhula (Pers.) Fr. and Pistillaria Fr., are distinguished by the discontinuity between stems and hymenia in the former and the continuity in the latter (Fries 1821). This taxonomic criterion is ambiguous, and consequently, the view of Karsten (1882) has been widely accepted: Typhula develops basidiomata from sclerotia, while basidiomata develop directly from substrata in Pistillaris. However, Corner (1970) observed basidiomata of Pistillaria petasitis S. Imai developing from sclerotia in Hokkaido, Japan. We later recognized that P. petasitis basidiomata also emerged directly from substrates on the ground in Hokkaido. An aberrant form of Typhula hyperborea H. Ekstr. was found in Upernavik, West Greenland. This specimen had a stem-like structure on a Poaceae plant, and sclerotia developed on its tip. Similar phenomena were found in other Typhula species in Japan. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the life cycle plasticity in the genera Typhula and Pistillaria through the interactions between their ecophysiological potential and environmental conditions in their localities. We collected and prepared strains of the above fungi from sclerotia or basidiomata, and we elucidated the taxonomical relationship and determined the physiological characteristics of our strains. Our findings imply that both Typhula and Pistillaria have the potential to produce sclerotia as well as the capacity for mycelial growth at ambient air temperatures in each locality where samples were collected. These findings suggest that Typhula spp. develope basidiomata not only from the sclerotia dispersed by the basidiospores but also from mycelia generated by the spore germination, which formed basidiomata multiple times, depending on their growth environments.

Abstract
In dentistry, orthodontic root resorption is a long-lasting issue with no effective treatment strategy, and its mechanisms, especially those related to senescent cells, remain largely unknown. Here, we used an orthodontic intrusion tooth movement model with an L-loop in rats to demonstrate that mechanical stress-induced senescent cells aggravate apical root resorption, which was prevented by administering senolytics (a dasatinib and quercetin cocktail). Our results indicated that cementoblasts and periodontal ligament cells underwent cellular senescence (p21+ or p16+) and strongly expressed receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B (RANKL) from day three, subsequently inducing tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive odontoclasts and provoking apical root resorption. More p21+ senescent cells expressed RANKL than p16+ senescent cells. We observed only minor changes in the number of RANKL+ non-senescent cells, whereas RANKL+ senescent cells markedly increased from day seven. Intriguingly, we also found cathepsin K+p21+p16+ cells in the root resorption fossa, suggesting senescent odontoclasts. Oral administration of dasatinib and quercetin markedly reduced these senescent cells and TRAP+ cells, eventually alleviating root resorption. Altogether, these results unveil those aberrant stimuli in orthodontic intrusive tooth movement induced RANKL+ early senescent cells, which have a pivotal role in odontoclastogenesis and subsequent root resorption. These findings offer a new therapeutic target to prevent root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement.

Abstract
Fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) presents as various phenotypes ranging from asymptomatic colonization to life-threatening infections. Here, we report an atypical case of FRS of the left maxillary sinus that extended to the contralateral maxillary sinus through the nasal septum. An 80-year-old woman with a history of osteoporosis was referred to our hospital for further management of headaches and chronic rhinosinusitis. Computed tomography (CT) of the sinus revealed a mass lesion with calcification in the left maxillary sinus, extending to the contralateral maxillary sinus through the nasal septum. T1-weighted and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass lesion with low-intensity signals. Endoscopic sinus surgery was performed for the diagnosis and treatment. Histopathological examination revealed fungal elements in the caseous material of the left maxillary sinus. However, no tissue-invasive fungal forms were found. Additionally, eosinophilic mucin was not observed. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with fungus ball (FB). To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports of a FB extending contralaterally through the nasal septum. This report serves as a reminder that FB can extend into contralateral paranasal sinuses through the nasal septum and the possibility that osteoporosis is a cause of extensive bone destruction.

Abstract
In this study, we used the lock-in thermography technique (LIT) to successfully visualize the single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) networks during the tensile deformation of CNT/fluoro-rubber (FKM) composites. The LIT images revealed that the CNT network modes in CNT/FKM during strain-loading and unloading can be classified into four sites: (i) disconnection, (ii) recovery after disconnection, (iii) undestroyable, and (iv) no network. Quantitative analysis of the heat intensity of the LIT also indicated that the change in resistance during strain-loading and unloading plays a role in the balance of disconnection and reconstruction of the conductive network. We demonstrated the ability of LIT to effectively visualize and quantify the network state of the composite under deformation, and the LIT results were found to be strongly correlated with the composite properties. These results highlighted the potential of LIT as a valuable tool for composite characterization and material design.

Abstract
There is a high risk of external apical root resorption (EARR) following the application of intrusive orthodontic forces to the apical root. However, there is a lack of suitable animal models to study this phenomenon in depth. This study compared the usability of three different types of loops, namely, vertical helical loop, box loop, and L loop, for preparing a rat model of orthodontic tooth movement with invasive forces. Results showed a significant downward movement in the first molar of the rat after L loop placement for 14 days. Three-dimensional reconstructed images showed root resorption and length shortening on the apical root and decreased bone volume and trabecular thickness in the alveolar bone under compression. Histological staining revealed odontoclasts on the root resorption fossa. This study showed that orthodontic tooth movement using the L loop provides an effective experimental animal model of EARR.

Abstract
This study examined the bioactivities and mechanisms of the non-centrifugal cane sugar polyphenols saponarin, schaftoside, and isoschaftoside in the salivary gland and their effects on salivation. In acute isolated C57BL/6N mouse submandibular gland cells, these polyphenols led to a higher increase in intracellular calcium after stimulation with the muscarinic agonist carbachol. Stimulation of these cells with polyphenols enhanced ATP production, aquaporin-5 translocation to the plasma membrane and eliminated intracellular reactive oxygen species generated by H2O2. In addition, phosphorylation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase and increased nitric oxide production in vascular endothelial cells were observed. In vivo administration of these polyphenols to C57BL/6N male mice resulted in significantly increased blood flow (saponarin, p = 0.040; isoschaftoside, p = 0.010) and salivation (saponarin, p = 0.031). A randomized controlled trial showed that intake of non-centrifugal cane sugar significantly increased saliva secretion compared with placebo (p = 0.003). These data suggest that non-centrifugal cane sugar polyphenols affect several pathways that support salivation and increase saliva secretion by enhancing vasodilation. Hence, non-centrifugal cane sugar polyphenols can be expected to maintain saliva secretion and improve reduced saliva flow.

Abstract
Senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASPs) secreted from senescent cells often cause the deleterious damages to the surrounding tissues. Although dedifferentiated fat (DFAT) cells prepared are considered a promising cell source for regenerative therapies, SASPs from DFAT cells undergoing long-term cell culture, which latently induce replicative senescence, have barely been explored. The present study was designed to investigate senescent behaviors in rat-derived DFAT cells at high passage numbers and to analyze the possible types of SASPs. Our data show that DFAT cells undergo senescence during replicative passaging, as determined by multiple senescent hallmarks including morphological changes in cell shape and nucleus. Moreover, RT2 PCR array analysis indicated that senescent DFAT cells expressed higher levels of 16 inflammatory cytokines (Ccl11, Ccl12, Ccl21, Ccl5, Csf2, Cxcl1, Cxcl12, Ifna2, IL11, IL12a, IL13, IL1a, IL1rn, IL6, Mif, and Tnf) associated with SASPs than non-senescent cells. This study implicates that rat DFAT cells undergo cellular senescence after long-term cell culture; cautious consideration should be paid to treat SASP secretion when senescent DFAT cells are used in regenerative medicine.

Abstract
AIMS This study determined the relationship between intra-individual variability in day-to-day nutrition-related lifestyle behaviors (meal timing, eating window, food intake, movement behaviors, sleep conditions, and body weight) and glycemic outcomes under free-living conditions in adults without type 2 diabetes. METHODS We analyzed 104 adults without type 2 diabetes. During the 7-day measurement period, dietary intake, movement behaviors, sleep conditions, and glucose outcomes were assessed. Daily food intake was assessed using a mobile-based health application. Movement behaviors and sleep conditions were assessed using a tri-axial accelerometer. Meal timing was assessed from the participant's daily life record. Blood glucose levels were measured continuously using a glucose monitor. Statistical analyses were conducted using a linear mixed-effects model, with mealtime, food intake, body weight, movement behaviors, and sleep conditions as fixed effects and participants as a random effect. RESULTS Dinner time and eating window were positively significantly correlated with mean (dinner time, p = 0.003; eating window, p = 0.001), standard deviation (SD; both at p < 0.001), and maximum (both at p < 0.001) blood glucose levels. Breakfast time was negatively associated with glucose outcomes (p < 0.01). Sedentary time was positively significantly associated with blood glucose SD (p = 0.040). Total sleep time was negatively significantly correlated with SD (p = 0.035) and maximum (p = 0.032) blood glucose levels. Total daily energy intake (p = 0.001), carbohydrate intake (p < 0.001), and body weight (p < 0.05) were positively associated with mean blood glucose levels. CONCLUSION Intra-individual variations in nutrition-related lifestyle behaviors, especially morning and evening body weight, and food intake, were associated with mean blood glucose levels, and a long sedentary time and total sleep time were associated with glucose variability. Earlier dinner times and shorter eating windows per day resulted in better glucose control.

Abstract
Peri-implantitis is a disease that causes the detachment of orthodontic mini-implants. Recently, stress-induced senescent cells have been reported to be involved in various inflammatory diseases. Senescent cell-eliminating drugs, termed "senolytics", can improve the symptoms of such diseases. However, the relationship between peri-implantitis and senescent cells remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the presence of senescent cells in a rat peri-implantitis model developed with a gum ring. The effect on bone resorption and implant loss was also investigated with and without senolytics (Dasatinib and Quercetin). The number of senescence markers (p19, p21, and p16) was found to increase, and implant detachment occurred in 24 days. After the administration of senolytics, the number of senescence markers decreased and implant detachment was inhibited. This study suggests that senescent cells aggravate peri-implantitis and senolytic administration latently reduces implant loss by inhibiting senescence-related mechanisms.

Abstract
Bioengineering approaches to modify lignin content and structure in plant cell walls have shown promise for facilitating biochemical conversions of lignocellulosic biomass into valuable chemicals. Despite numerous research efforts, however, the effect of altered lignin chemistry on the supramolecular assembly of lignocellulose and consequently its deconstruction in lignin-modified transgenic and mutant plants is not fully understood. In this study, we aimed to close this gap by analyzing lignin-modified rice (Oryza sativa L.) mutants deficient in 5-HYDROXYCONIFERALDEHYDE O-METHYLTRANSFERASE (CAldOMT) and CINNAMYL ALCOHOL DEHYDROGENASE (CAD). A set of rice mutants harboring knockout mutations in either or both OsCAldOMT1 and OsCAD2 was generated in part by genome editing and subjected to comparative cell wall chemical and supramolecular structure analyses. In line with the proposed functions of CAldOMT and CAD in grass lignin biosynthesis, OsCAldOMT1-deficient mutant lines produced altered lignins depleted of syringyl and tricin units and incorporating noncanonical 5-hydroxyguaiacyl units, whereas OsCAD2-deficient mutant lines produced lignins incorporating noncanonical hydroxycinnamaldehyde-derived units. All tested OsCAldOMT1- and OsCAD2-deficient mutants, especially OsCAldOMT1-deficient lines, displayed enhanced cell wall saccharification efficiency. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray diffraction analyses of rice cell walls revealed that both OsCAldOMT1- and OsCAD2 deficiencies contributed to the disruptions of the cellulose crystalline network. Further, OsCAldOMT1 deficiency contributed to the increase of the cellulose molecular mobility more prominently than OsCAD2 deficiency, resulting in apparently more loosened lignocellulose molecular assembly. Such alterations in cell wall chemical and supramolecular structures may in part account for the variations of saccharification performance of the OsCAldOMT1- and OsCAD2-deficient rice mutants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A few studies reported that both decrease and increase in body mass index (BMI) were associated with the development of dementia in later life. However, it is unclear what changes in body composition are associated with cognitive decline. This study investigated the longitudinal influences of changes in body composition on cognitive function among community-dwelling adults. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS This longitudinal study included older adults aged ≥60 years without cognitive impairment who participated in National Institute for Longevity Sciences - Longitudinal Study of Aging. MEASUREMENTS Cognitive function was assessed using the MMSE. Body composition was measured by a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry system. Then, BMI, fat mass index (FMI), fat-free mass index (FFMI), and muscle mass index (MMI) were calculated. The changes in body composition over 6 years (second wave to fifth wave) were calculated, and three groups were created: decreased group, decrease of >5%; stable group, change within 5%, and increased group, increase of >5%. In statistical analysis, a linear mixed model was applied by sex to investigate the influences of body composition changes on cognitive function over 4 years (fifth wave to seventh wave). RESULTS This study analyzed 515 participants (mean age, 67.05 years; 53.4% men). Men with decreased group in FFMI and MMI exhibited faster declines in MMSE scores than those with stable group (β [95% CI]: FFMI, -0.293 [-0.719 to -0.020]; MMI, -0.472 [-0.884 to -0.059]). In women, there was no significant association between body composition changes and cognitive functions. CONCLUSIONS Decrease in fat-free mass and muscle mass is associated with faster cognitive declines in men. These results suggest the importance of continuous monitoring of muscle mass to prevent cognitive decline in later life.

Abstract
Graphene-oxide-semiconductor (GOS) planar-type electron emission devices with a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) protective layer have demonstrated improved oxidation resistance while maintaining their emission performance. The devices with a monolayer or a multilayer (13 nm in thickness) h-BN protective layer can emit electrons even after oxygen plasma exposure (ashing). Remarkably, the device with a monolayer h-BN was able to emit electrons with a maximum efficiency of 11% after a 4-min ashing, showing that a thin h-BN protection layer can provide oxygen tolerance to GOS devices without a significant emission loss. The thicker multilayer h-BN imparted higher oxidation resistance to the device but with decreased emission efficiency compared with the device with monolayer h-BN. Thus, the use of h-BN necessitates a trade-off between the device's emission performance and its oxidation resistance. In addition, the etching rate of h-BN by the oxygen plasma treatment was found to increase by exposure to air after the first plasma treatment, which indicates that the adherence of H2O to the surface of h-BN is one probable cause of h-BN etching during the ashing process.

Abstract
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) has traditionally been employed to improve muscle strength and glucose uptake. EMS may also reduce arterial stiffness, but little is known about whether low-intensity EMS reduces systemic and/or regional arterial stiffness. This study aimed to examine the effects of low-intensity EMS of the lower limbs on segmental arterial stiffness. Fourteen healthy subjects participated in experiments under two different protocols (control resting trial (CT) and electrical stimulation trial (ET)) in random order on separate days. The EMS was applied to the lower limbs at 4 Hz for 20 min at an intensity corresponding to an elevation of approximately 15 beats/min in pulse rate (10.7 ± 4.7% of heart rate reserve). Arterial stiffness was assessed by cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), CAVI0, heart-ankle pulse wave velocity (haPWV), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), heart-brachial pulse wave velocity (hbPWV), and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV). In both trials, each parameter was measured at before (Pre) and 5 min (Post 1) and 30 min (Post 2) after trial. After the experiment, CT did not cause significant changes in any arterial stiffness parameters, whereas ET significantly reduced CAVI (from Pre to Post 1: −0.8 ± 0.5 unit p < 0.01), CAVI0 (from Pre to Post 1: −1.2 ± 0.8 unit p < 0.01), haPWV (from Pre to Post 1: −47 ± 35 cm/s p < 0.01), and baPWV (from Pre to Post 1: −120 ± 63 cm/s p < 0.01), but not hbPWV or cfPWV. Arm diastolic blood pressure (BP) at Post 2 was slightly but significantly increased in the CT compared to Pre or Post 1, but not in the ET. Conversely, ankle diastolic and mean BPs at Post 1 were significantly reduced compared to Pre and Post 2 in the ET (p < 0.01). These findings suggest that low-intensity EMS of the lower limbs reduces arterial stiffness, but only in sites that received EMS.

Abstract
Typhula ishikariensis and the related fungi were separated into three biological species by morphological and physiological characteristics, as well as DNA sequences and mating reactions. We propose that the T. ishikariensis complex should be divided into three species (T. ishikariensis, T. canadensis and T. hyperborea) and two varieties (T. ishikariensis var. ishikariensis and var. idahoensis). Typhula hyperborea was reappraised to be recognized also as a separate species of the T. ishikariensis complex.

Abstract
Anaphylactic reactions during the induction of general anaesthesia are rare. Anaesthetists should determine the pathogenesis of anaphylaxis in order to establish appropriate treatment and prevent recurrence. Very little clinical information has been published to date about anaphylaxis induced by the recently launched drug remimazolam. A 78-year-old man, scheduled for elective surgery for colon cancer, became profoundly hypotensive and hypoxic shortly following the induction of general anaesthesia with remimazolam, remifentanil and rocuronium. His physiological derangement was successfully managed with adrenaline, vasopressors and intravenous fluid resuscitation. His serum tryptase level was significantly elevated and an intradermal test with diluted remimazolam revealed a positive reaction, confirming the diagnosis of anaphylaxis. We believe this is the first case report of remimazolam-induced anaphylactic shock diagnosed with a serum tryptase elevation and positive skin test.

Abstract
[Purpose] Reports suggest that static stretching, which improves body flexibility, could reduce arterial stiffness. Regular training using an exercise ball would increase flexibility in a different manner, compared to that from static stretching; however, it remains unclear whether such exercise can reduce arterial stiffness. This study aimed to clarify the effect of exercise ball training on arterial stiffness in sedentary middle-aged participants. [Participants and Methods] Fifteen healthy middle-aged males (age, 52 ± 12 years) were divided into a control group (n=7, CON) and an intervention group (n=8, INT). The CON group did not alter physical activity levels throughout the study period, while the INT group participated in supervised training sessions using an exercise ball for 20-30 min, 5 days/week, for a duration of 4 weeks. [Results] Exercise ball training significantly increased the sit-and-reach test score (CON, -3.8 ± 11.1% vs. INT, 33.8 ± 47.5%) and reduced cardio-ankle vascular index (CON, -0.8 ± 4.1% vs. INT, -5.7 ± 4.1%) and heart-ankle pulse wave velocity (CON, 1.6 ± 4.5% vs. INT, -4.2 ± 4.6%), as an index of arterial stiffness. [Conclusion] Four weeks of supervised training using an exercise ball as well as regular static stretching would increase body flexibility and reduce systemic arterial stiffness among sedentary middle-aged males.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postviral olfactory dysfunction (PVOD) following a viral upper respiratory tract infection (URI) is one of the most common causes of olfactory disorders, often lasting for over a year. To date, the molecular pathology of PVOD has not been elucidated. METHODS A murine model of Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3)-mediated upper respiratory tract inflammation was used to investigate the impact of URIs on the olfactory system. Inflammation was induced via the intranasal administration of polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C), a TLR3 ligand) to the right nostril for 3 days. Peripheral olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), immune cells in the olfactory mucosa, and glial cells in the olfactory bulb (OB) were analyzed histologically. Proinflammatory cytokines in the nasal tissue and OB were evaluated using the quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS In the treated mice, OSNs were markedly reduced in the olfactory mucosa, and T cell and neutrophil infiltration therein was observed 1 day after the end of poly(I:C) administration. Moreover, there was a considerable increase in microglial cells and slight increase in activated astrocytes in the OB. In addition, qPCR and ELISA revealed the elevated expression of interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interferon-gamma both in the OB and nasal tissue. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, the decreased peripheral OSNs, OB microgliosis, and elevated proinflammatory cytokines suggest that immunological changes in the OB may be involved in the pathogenesis of PVOD.

Abstract
There are treatments available for enamel demineralization or acid erosion, but they have limitations. We aimed to manufacture a device that could directly form a hydroxyapatite (HAp) film coating on the enamel with a chairside erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method for repairing enamel defects. We used decalcified bovine enamel specimens and compacted α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) as targets of Er:YAG-PLD. With irradiation, an α-TCP coating layer was immediately deposited on the specimen surface. The morphological, mechanical, and chemical characteristics of the coatings were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning probe microscopy (SPM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and a micro-Vickers hardness tester. Wear resistance, cell attachment of the HAp coatings, and temperature changes during the Er:YAG-PLD procedure were also observed. SEM demonstrated that the α-TCP powder turned into microparticles by irradiation. XRD peaks revealed that the coatings were almost hydrolyzed into HAp within 2 days. Micro-Vickers hardness indicated that the hardness lost by decalcification was almost recovered by the coatings. The results suggest that the Er:YAG-PLD technique is useful for repairing enamel defects and has great potential for future clinical applications.

Abstract
In this study, we synthesised the Ni/single-walled carbon nanotube prepared by the super-growth method (SG-SWCNTs). In this approach, the Ni nanoparticles were immobilised by an impregnation method using the SG-SWCNTs with high specific surface areas (1144 m2g-1). The scanning electron microscopy images confirmed that the SG-SWCNTs exhibit the fibriform morphology corresponding to the carbon nanotubes. In addition, component analysis of the obtained samples clarified that the Ni nanoparticles were immobilised on the surface of the SG-SWCNTs. Next, we evaluated the activity for the reduction of 4-nitoropenol in the presence of the Ni/SG-SWCNTs. Additionally, the Ni/graphene, which was obtained by the same synthetic method, was utilised in this reaction. The rate of reaction activity of the Ni/SG-SWCNTs finished faster than that of the Ni/GPs. From this result, the pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constantkfor the Ni/SG-SWCNTs and the Ni/GPs was calculated respectively at 0.083 and 0.070 min-1, indicating that the Ni/SG-SWCNTs exhibits higher activity.

Abstract
Various stresses latently induce cellular senescence that occasionally deteriorates the functioning of surrounding tissues. Nevertheless, little is known about the appearance and function of senescent cells, caused by the implantation of beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)—used widely in dentistry and orthopedics for treating bone diseases. In this study, two varying sizes of β-TCP granules (<300 μm and 300–500 μm) were implanted, and using histological and immunofluorescent staining, appearances of senescent-like cells in critical-sized bone defects in the calvaria of Sprague Dawley rats were evaluated. Parallelly, bone formation in defects was investigated with or without the oral administration of senolytics (a cocktail of dasatinib and quercetin). A week after the implantation, the number of senescence-associated beta-galactosidase, p21-, p19-, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-positive cells increased and then decreased upon administrating senolytics. This administration of senolytics also attenuated 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal staining, representing reactive oxygen species. Combining senolytic administration with β-TCP implantation significantly enhanced the bone formation in defects as revealed by micro-computed tomography analysis and hematoxylin-eosin staining. This study demonstrates that β-TCP granules latently induce senescent-like cells, and senolytic administration may improve the bone-forming ability of β-TCP by inhibiting senescence-associated mechanisms.

Abstract
Percutaneously absorbed carbon dioxide enhances blood flow. The mechanism by which it does so is unclear, but we hypothesized that it involves bicarbonate ions. BALB/c mice were bathed in neutral bicarbonate ionized water (NBIW) and showed increased blood bicarbonate levels and blood flow via phosphorylation of peripheral vascular endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and production of nitric oxide (NO). Phosphorylation of eNOS and NO production were also increased in human umbilical vein endothelial cells cultured in medium containing NBIW, and NBIW showed reactive oxygen species scavenging activity. In a double-blind, randomized study in men and women aged 30 to 59 years with subjective cold intolerance, bathing in NBIW elevated body temperature faster than bathing in a control solution and improved chills and sleep quality. Taken together, our results show that percutaneously absorbed carbon dioxide changes to bicarbonate ions, which act directly on endothelial cells to increase NO production by phosphorylation of eNOS and thus improve blood flow.

Abstract
Background
There is an ongoing controversy regarding the necessity of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) for patients with ischemic heart diseases after the publication of the results of the ISCHEMIA trial.
Purpose
We aimed to evaluate the association of the extent of myocardial ischemia with outcomes in patients with suspected coronary artery disease in Japan.
Methods
From the data of 2780 patients with stable angina who were enrolled prospectively between January 2006 and March 2008 in Japan and had undergone physician-referred non-invasive imaging tests, 1205 patients managed with SPECT were stratified by 10% myocardial ischemia. Major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), including death, myocardial infarction, hospitalization for heart failure, and late revascularization, were followed-up for 1 year.
Results
Patients with ≥10% myocardial ischemia (n=173) were older than patients with <10% myocardial ischemia (n=1032) and had a significantly higher 1-year cumulative incidence of MACEs (9.1% vs. 1.2%, P<0.0001). After adjusting for confounders, the risk of ≥10% myocardial ischemia relative to <10% myocardial ischemia for MACEs remained significant (adjusted hazard ratio [95% confidence interval], 2.40 [1.09–5.26], P=0.029).
Conclusion
The presence of ≥10% myocardial ischemia was significantly associated with the 1-year risk for MACEs in Japanese patients with suspected coronary artery disease.

Abstract
During behavioral states of immobility, sleep, and anesthesia, the hippocampus generates high-frequency oscillations called ripples. Ripples occur simultaneously with synchronous neuronal activity in the neocortex, known as slow waves, and contribute to memory consolidation. During these ripples, various neocortical regions exhibit modulations in spike rates and local field activity irrespective of whether they receive direct synaptic inputs from the hippocampus. However, little is known about the subthreshold dynamics of the membrane potentials of neocortical neurons during ripples. We patch-clamped layer 2/3 pyramidal cells in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), a neocortical region that is involved in allocentric spatial representation of behavioral exploration and sequential series of relevant action potentials during ripples. We simultaneously monitored the membrane potentials of post hoc-identified PPC neurons and the local field potentials of the hippocampus in anesthetized mice. More than 50% of the recorded PPC neurons exhibited significant depolarizations and/or hyperpolarizations during ripples. Histological inspections of the recorded neurons revealed that the ripple-modulated PPC neurons were distributed in the PPC in a spatially non-biased fashion. These results suggest that hippocampal ripples are widely but selectively associated with the subthreshold dynamics of the membrane potentials of PPC neurons even though there is no monosynaptic connectivity between the hippocampus and the PPC.

Abstract
AIM To clarify the utility of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) for interim evaluation of response to chemotherapy in lymphoma treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS CEUS was performed both before (day 0) and after the treatment (7 and/or 14 days), and a time-intensity curve was obtained. The patients were divided into two groups (complete remission [CR] group and non-CR group) according to the results of conventional response evaluation, and peak enhancement (PE), time to peak enhancement, perfusion index (PI), the total area under the curve during wash-in (AUC-in), and the total AUC were compared between the groups. RESULTS Among 27 patients with various types of lymphoma, the median change ratio of PE and PI at day 7 evaluation were significantly different between the CR group and the non-CR group (0.81 versus 1.39, p=0.017 for PE and 0.92 versus 2.09, p=0.010 for PI). The change ratio of PE < 1.09 (specificity: 86%; sensitivity, 88%) and PI < 1.65 (specificity: 86%; sensitivity: 94%) distinguished CR from non-CR. Patients who achieved a PE change ratio <1.09 or a PI change ratio <1.65 had significantly better estimated progression-free survival (p<0.001). CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated that changes in tumour perfusion parameters evaluated with CEUS at 1 week after the treatment initiation were significantly different between lymphoma patients in CR group and non-CR group. Alterations in perfusion parameters evaluated via CEUS could impact the prognosis of lymphoma patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with several systemic vascular symptoms and xerostomia. It is considered that hyperglycemia-induced polyuria and dehydration cause decreased body-water volume, leading to decreased saliva secretion and, ultimately, xerostomia. In T2DM, increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) causes tissue damage to vascular endothelial cells as well as epithelial tissue, including pancreas and cornea. Hence, a similar phenomenon may occur in other tissues and glands in a hyperglycemic environment. METHODS Salivary gland tissue injury was examined, using T2DM model mouse (db/db). Transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) was conducted to evaluate tissue injury. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio were measured as indicator of oxidative stress. Moreover, in vitro ROS production and cell injury was evaluated by mouse salivary gland-derived normal cells under high-glucose condition culture. RESULTS In vivo and in vitro analysis showed a higher percentage of TUNEL-positive cells and higher levels of MDA and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine in salivary gland tissue of db/db mice. This suggests damage of saliva secretion-associated lipids and DNA by hyperglycemic-induced oxidative stress. To analyze the mechanism by which hyperglycemia promotes ROS production, mouse salivary gland-derived cells were isolated. The cell culture with high-glucose medium enhanced ROS production and promotes apoptotic and necrotic cell death. CONCLUSION These findings suggest a novel mechanism whereby hyperglycemic-induced ROS production promotes salivary gland injury, resulting in hyposalivation.

Abstract
An animal's choice behavior is shaped by the outcome feedback from selected actions in a trial-and-error approach. Tonically active neurons (TANs), presumed cholinergic interneurons in the striatum, are thought to be involved in the learning and performance of reward-directed behaviors, but it remains unclear how TANs are involved in shaping reward-directed choice behaviors based on the outcome feedback. To this end, we recorded activity of TANs from the dorsal striatum of two macaque monkeys (Macaca fuscata; 1 male, 1 female) while they performed a multi-step choice task to obtain multiple rewards. In this task, the monkeys first searched for a rewarding target from among three alternatives in a trial-and-error manner and then earned additional rewards by repeatedly choosing the rewarded target. We found that a considerable proportion of TANs selectively responded to either the reward or the no-reward outcome feedback during the trial-and-error search, but these feedback responses were not observed during repeat trials. Moreover, the feedback responses of TANs were similarly observed in any search trials, without distinctions regarding the predicted probability of rewards and the location of chosen targets. Unambiguously, TANs detected reward and no-reward feedback specifically when the monkeys performed trial-and-error searches, in which the monkeys were learning the value of the targets and adjusting their subsequent choice behavior based on the reward and no-reward feedback. These results suggest that striatal cholinergic interneurons signal outcome feedback specifically during search behavior, in circumstances where the choice outcomes cannot be predicted with certainty by the animals.

Abstract
We report an approach to fabricate high conductivity graphite sheets based on a heat-and-current treatment of filtrated, exfoliated graphite flakes. This treatment combines heating (~ 900 °C) and in-plane electrical current flow (550 A·cm-2) to improve electrical conductivity through the reduction of crystalline defects. This process was shown to require only a 1-min treatment time, which resulted in a 2.1-fold increase in electrical conductivity (from 1088 ± 72 to 2275 ± 50 S·cm-1). Structural characterization by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction indicated that the improvement electrical conductivity originated from a 30-fold improvement in the crystallinity (Raman G/D ratio increase from 2.8 to 85.3) with no other observable structural transformations. Significantly, this treatment was found to act uniformly across a macroscopic (10 mm) sheet surface indicating it is on the development of applications, such as electrodes for energy generation and storage and electromagnetic shielding, as well as on the potential for the development of large-scale treatment technologies.

Abstract
Acute beer or alcohol ingestion reduces arterial stiffness, but the dose required to reduce arterial stiffness is unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the acute effects of ingesting various amounts of beer on arterial stiffness in healthy men. Nine men (20–22 years) participated, in eight trials in random order on different days. The participants each consumed 25, 50, 100, or 200 mL of alcohol-free beer (AFB25, AFB50, AFB100, and AFB200) or regular beer (B25, B50, B100, and B200), and were monitored for 60 min thereafter. Arterial stiffness did not significantly change among all AFB and B25. However, B50, B100, and B200 caused a significant decrease in arterial stiffness for approximately 30–60 min: heart-brachial pulse wave velocity (B50: −4.5 ± 2.4%; B100: −3.4 ± 1.3%; B200: −8.1 ± 2.6%); brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (B50: −0.6 ± 2.0%; B100: −3.3 ± 1.1%; B200: −9.3 ± 3.0%); heart-ankle pulse wave velocity (B50: −3.7 ± 0.3%; B100: −3.3 ± 0.9%; B200: −8.1 ± 2.7%); and cardio-ankle vascular index (B50: −4.6 ± 1.3%; B100: −5.6 ± 0.8%; B200: −10.3 ± 3.1%). Positive control alcoholic beverages reduced arterial stiffness, and these reductions did not significantly differ regardless of the type of beverage. Our data show that consuming about 50 mL of beer can start to reduce arterial stiffness, and that the reduced arterial stiffness is mainly attributable to the alcohol in beer.

Abstract
Despite advances in bone regenerative medicine, the relationship between stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) in cells and bone regeneration remains largely unknown. Herein, we demonstrated that the implantation of a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) sustained-release gelatin sponge (LS-G) increases the number of SIPS cells and that the elimination of these cells promotes bone formation in critical-sized bone defects in the rat calvaria. Histological (hematoxylin–eosin and SA-β-gal) and immunohistological (p16 and p21 for analyzing cellular senescence and 4-HNE for oxidation) staining was used to identify SIPS cells and elucidate the underlying mechanism. Bone formation in defects were analyzed using microcomputed tomography, one and four weeks after surgery. Parallel to LS-G implantation, local epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) administration, and systemic senolytic (dasatinib and quercetin: D+Q) administration were used to eliminate SIPS cells. After LS-G implantation, SA-β-gal-, p16-, and p21-positive cells (SIPS cells) accumulated in the defects. However, treatment with LS-G+EGCG and LS-G+D+Q resulted in lower numbers of SIPS cells than that with LS-G in the defects, resulting in an augmentation of newly formed bone. We demonstrated that SIPS cells induced by sustained stimulation by LPS may play a deleterious role in bone formation. Controlling these cell numbers is a promising strategy to increase bone regeneration.

Abstract
Nigrostriatal dopamine (DA) projections are anatomically organized along the dorsolateral-ventromedial axis, conveying long-term value signals to the striatum for shaping actions toward multiple future rewards. The present study examines whether the topographic organization of long-term value signals are observed upon activity of presumed DA neurons and presumed striatal projection neurons (phasically active neurons, PANs), as predicted based on anatomical literature. Our results indicate that DA neurons in the dorsolateral midbrain encode long-term value signals on a short timescale, while ventromedial midbrain DA neurons encode such signals on a relatively longer timescale. Activity of the PANs in the dorsal striatum is more heterogeneous for encoding long-term values, although significant differences in long-term value signals were observed between the caudate nucleus and putamen. These findings suggest that topographic DA signals for long-term values are not simply transferred to striatal neurons, possibly due to the contribution of other projections to the striatum.

Abstract
Contamination of implants is inevitable during different steps of production as well as during the clinical use. We devised a new implant cleaning strategy to restore the bioactivities on dental implant surfaces. We evaluated the efficiency of the Finevo cleaning system, and Ultraviolet and Plasma treatments to decontaminate hydrocarbon-contaminated titanium disks. The surfaces of the contaminated titanium disks cleaned using the Finevo cleaning system were similar to those of the uncontaminated titanium disks in scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, but no obvious change in the roughness was observed in the scanning probe microscopy analysis. The rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMMSCs) cultured on the treated titanium disks attached to and covered the surfaces of disks cleaned with the Finevo cleaning system. The alkaline phosphatase activity, calcium deposition, and osteogenesis-related gene expression in rBMMSCs on disks cleaned using the Finevo cleaning system were higher compared to those in the ultraviolet and plasma treatments, displaying better cell functionality. Thus, the Finevo cleaning system can enhance the attachment, differentiation, and mineralization of rBMMSCs on treated titanium disk surfaces. This research provides a new strategy for cleaning the surface of contaminated titanium dental implants and for restoration of their biological functions.

Abstract
An increase in the diversity of neural progenitor subtypes and folding of the cerebral cortex are characteristic features which appeared during the evolution of the mammalian brain. Here, we show that the expansion of a specific subtype of neural progenitor is crucial for cortical folding. We found that outer radial glial (oRG) cells can be subdivided by HOPX expression in the gyrencephalic cerebral cortex of ferrets. Compared with HOPX-negative oRG cells, HOPX-positive oRG cells had high self-renewal activity and were accumulated in prospective gyral regions. Using our in vivo genetic manipulation technique for ferrets, we found that the number of HOPX-positive oRG cells and their self-renewal activity were regulated by sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling. Importantly, suppressing Shh signaling reduced HOPX-positive oRG cells and cortical folding, while enhancing it had opposing effects. Our results reveal a novel subtype of neural progenitor important for cortical folding in gyrencephalic mammalian cerebral cortex.
