Abstract
In the last decade, both cellulose and alginate polysaccharides have been extensively utilized for the synthesis of biocompatible hydrogels because of their alluring characteristics like low cost, biodegradability, hydrophilicity, biodegradability, ease of availability and non-toxicity. The presence of abundant hydrophilic functional groups (like carboxyl and hydroxyl) on the surface of cellulose and alginate or their derivatives makes these materials promising candidates for the preparation of hydrogels with appealing structures and characteristics, leading to growing research in water treatment and biomedical fields. These two polysaccharides are typically blended together to improve hydrogels' desired qualities (mechanical strength, adsorption properties, cellulose/alginate yield). So, keeping in view their extensive applicability, in the present review article, recent advances in the development of cellulose/nanocellulose-alginate-based hydrogels and their relevance in water treatment (adsorption of dyes, heavy metals, etc.) and biomedical field (wound healing, tissue engineering, drug delivery) has been reviewed. Further, impact of other inorganic/organic additives in cellulose/nanocellulose-alginate-based hydrogels properties like contaminants adsorption, drug delivery, tissue engineering, etc., has also been studied. Moreover, the current difficulties and future prospects of nanocellulose-alginate-based hydrogels regarding their water purification and biomedical applications are also discussed at the end.

Abstract
Cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogel has good biocompatibility, antibacterial performance, biodegradability, and other characteristics. It can be very compatible with human tissues and degradation, while its good water absorption and moisturizing properties can effectively absorb wound exudates, keep the wound moist, and promote wound healing. In this paper, the structural properties, and physical and chemical cross-linking preparation methods of cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogels were discussed in detail, and the application of cellulose-based hydrogels in the antibacterial field was deeply studied. In general, cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogels, as a new type of biomaterial, have shown good potential in antimicrobial properties and have been widely used. However, there are still some challenges, such as optimizing the preparation process and performance parameters, improving the antibacterial and physical properties, broadening the application range, and evaluating safety. However, with the deepening of research and technological progress, it is believed that cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogels will be applied and developed in more fields in the future.

Abstract
The hard-healing chronic wounds of diabetics are still one of the most intractable problems in clinical skin injury repair. Wound microenvironments directly affect wound healing speed, but conventional dressings exhibit limited efficacy in regulating the wound microenvironment and facilitating healing. To address this serious issue, we designed a thermo-sensitive drug-controlled hydrogel with wound self-adjusting effects, consisting of a sodium alginate (SA), Antheraeapernyi silk gland protein (ASGP) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) for a self-adjusting microenvironment, resulting in an intelligent releasing drug which promotes skin regeneration. PNIPAM has a benign temperature-sensitive effect. The contraction, drugs and water molecules expulsion of hydrogel were generated upon surpassing lower critical solution temperatures, which made the hydrogel system have smart drug release properties. The addition of ASGP further improves the biocompatibility and endows the thermo-sensitive drug-controlled hydrogel with adhesion. Additionally, in vitro assays demonstrate that the thermo-sensitive drug-controlled hydrogels have good biocompatibility, including the ability to promote the adhesion and proliferation of human skin fibroblast cells. This work proposes an approach for smart drug-controlled hydrogels with a thermo response to promote wound healing by self-adjusting the wound microenvironment.

Abstract
Burns can result in infection, disability, psychosocial and economic issues. Advanced wound dressings like hydrogel absorb exudate and maintain moisture. Considering the antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles and iron oxide nanoparticles, the efficiency of cross-linked hydrogel loaded with chitosan-supported iron oxide and silver nanoparticles for burn wounds repair was investigated in animal model. Cellulose hydrogel dressing made from carboxymethylcellulose and hydroxyethylcellulose crosslinked with different concentrations of citric acid (10, 15, 20, and 30%) was produced. The physicochemical characteristics of the synthetized hydrogels including Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Thermal behavior, Swelling properties, and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were evaluated. The silver nanoparticles and iron nanoparticles were produced and the characteristics, cytotoxicity, antimicrobial activities and their synergistic effect were investigated. After adding nanoparticles to hydrogels, the effects of the prepared wound dressings were investigated in a 14-day animal model of burn wound. The results showed that the mixture comprising 12.5 ppm AgNps, and IONPs at a concentration ≤100 ppm was non-cytotoxic. Moreover, the formulations with 20% CA had a swelling ratio of almost 250, 340, and 500 g/g at pHs of 5, 6.2, and 7.4 after one hour, which are lower than those of formulations with 5 and 10% CA. The total mass loss (59.31%) and the exothermic degradation happened in the range of 273-335 °C and its Tm was observed at 318.52 °C for hydrogels with 20% CA. Thus, the dressing comprising 20% CA which was loaded with 12.5 ppm silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and 100 ppm iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) indicated better physicochemical, microbial and non-cytotoxic characteristics, and accelerated the process of wound healing after 14 days. It was concluded that the crosslinked hydrogel loaded with 12.5 ppm AgNPs and 100 ppm IONPs possesses great wound healing activity and could be regarded as an effective topical burn wound healing treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A noninvasive method to track implanted biomaterials is desirable for real-time monitoring of material interactions with host tissues and assessment of efficacy and safety. PURPOSE To explore quantitative in vivo tracking of polyurethane implants using a manganese porphyrin (MnP) contrast agent containing a covalent binding site for pairing to polymers. STUDY TYPE Prospective, longitudinal. ANIMAL MODEL Rodent model of dorsal subcutaneous implants (10 female Sprague Dawley rats). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE A 3-T; two-dimensional (2D) T1-weighted spin-echo (SE), T2-weighted turbo SE, three-dimensional (3D) spoiled gradient-echo T1 mapping with variable flip angles. ASSESSMENT A new MnP-vinyl contrast agent to covalently label polyurethane hydrogels was synthesized and chemically characterized. Stability of binding was assessed in vitro. MRI was performed in vitro on unlabeled hydrogels and hydrogels labeled at different concentrations, and in vivo on rats with unlabeled and labeled hydrogels implanted dorsally. In vivo MRI was performed at 1, 3, 5, and 7 weeks postimplantation. Implants were easily identified on T1-weighted SE, and fluid accumulation from inflammation was distinguished on T2-weighted turbo SE. Implants were segmented on contiguous T1-weighted SPGR slices using a threshold of 1.8 times the background muscle signal intensity; implant volume and mean T1 values were then calculated at each timepoint. Histopathology was performed on implants in the same plane as MRI and compared to imaging results. STATISTICAL TESTS Unpaired t-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for comparisons. A P value <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS Hydrogel labeling with MnP resulted in a significant T1 reduction in vitro (T1 = 517 ± 36 msec vs. 879 ± 147 msec unlabeled). Mean T1 values of labeled implants in rats increased significantly by 23% over time, from 1 to 7 weeks postimplantation (651 ± 49 msec to 801 ± 72 msec), indicating decreasing implant density. DATA CONCLUSION Polymer-binding MnP enables in vivo tracking of vinyl-group coupling polymers. EVIDENCE LEVEL 1. TECHNICAL EFFICACY Stage 1.

Abstract
Metal nanoparticles play an outstanding role in the field of wound healing due to their excellent properties, and the significance of iron, one of the most widely used metals globally, cannot be overlooked. The purpose of this review is to determine the importance of iron nanoparticles in wound-healing dressings. Prolonged, poorly healing wounds may induce infections; wound infections are a major cause of chronic wound formation. The primary components of iron nanoparticles are iron oxide nanoparticles, which promote wound healing by being antibacterial, releasing metal ions, and overcoming bacterial resistance. The diameter of iron oxide nanoparticles typically ranges between 1 and 100 nm. Magnetic nanoparticles with a diameter of less than 30 nm are superparamagnetic and are referred to as superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. This subset of iron oxide nanoparticles can use an external magnetic field for novel functions such as magnetization and functionalization. Iron nanoparticles can serve clinical purposes not only to enhance wound healing through the aforementioned means but also to ameliorate anemia and glucose irregularities, capitalizing on iron's properties. Iron nanoparticles positively impact the healing process of chronic wounds, potentially extending beyond wound management.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is generated by certain species of bacteria and comprises polysaccharides with unique physical, chemical, and mechanical characteristics. Due to its outstanding biocompatibility, high purity, excellent mechanical strength, high water absorption, and highly porous structure, bacterial cellulose has been recently investigated for biomedical application. However, the pure form of bacterial cellulose is hardly used as a biomedical material due to some of its inherent shortcomings. To extend its applications in drug delivery, modifications of native bacterial cellulose are widely used to improve its properties. Usually, bacterial cellulose modifications can be carried out by physical, chemical, and biological methods. In this review, a brief introduction to bacterial cellulose and its production and fabrication is first given, followed by up-to-date and in-depth discussions of modification. Finally, we focus on the potential applications of bacterial cellulose as a drug delivery system.

Abstract
Conductive hydrogels are platforms recognized as constituting promising materials for tissue engineering applications. This is because such conductive hydrogels are characterized by the inherent conductivity properties while retaining favorable biocompatibility and mechanical properties. These conductive hydrogels can be particularly useful in enhancing wound healing since their favorable conductivity can promote the transport of essential ions for wound healing via the imposition of a so-called transepithelial potential. Other valuable properties of these conductive hydrogels, such as wound monitoring, stimuli-response etc., are also discussed in this study. Crucially, the properties of conductive hydrogels, such as 3D printability and monitoring properties, suggest the possibility of its use as an alternative wound dressing to traditional dressings such as bandages. This review, therefore, seeks to comprehensively explore the functionality of conductive hydrogels in wound healing, types of conductive hydrogels and their preparation strategies and crucial properties of hydrogels. This review will also assess the limitations of conductive hydrogels and future perspectives, with an emphasis on the development trend for conductive hydrogel uses in wound dressing fabrication for subsequent clinical applications.

Abstract
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is produced by several microorganisms as extracellular structures and can be modified by various physicochemical and biological strategies to produce different cellulosic formats. The main advantages of BC for biomedical applications can be summarized thus: easy moldability, purification, and scalability; high biocompatibility; and straightforward tailoring. The presence of a high amount of free hydroxyl residues, linked with water and nanoporous morphology, makes BC polymer an ideal candidate for wound healing. In this frame, acute and chronic wounds, associated with prevalent pathologies, were addressed to find adequate therapeutic strategies. Hence, the main characteristics of different BC structures-such as membranes and films, fibrous and spheroidal, nanocrystals and nanofibers, and different BC blends, as well as recent advances in BC composites with alginate, collagen, chitosan, silk sericin, and some miscellaneous blends-are reported in detail. Moreover, the development of novel antimicrobial BC and drug delivery systems are discussed.

Abstract
Chronic wound treatment accounts for a substantial percentage of the medical expenses worldwide. Improving and developing novel wound care systems can potentially help to handle this problem. Wound dressings loaded with antiseptics may be an important tool for wound care, as they inhibit bacterial growth at the wound site. The goal of the present work was to investigate the potential of using casein hydrogel dressings loaded with two antiseptic drugs, Octiset® or polyhexanide, to treat chronic wounds. Casein-based hydrogels are inexpensive and have several properties that make them suitable for biomedical applications. Two types of casein were used: casein sodium salt and acid casein, with the formulations being labelled CS and C, respectively. The hydrogels were characterised with respect to their physical properties (swelling capacity, water content, morphology, mechanical resistance, and stability), before and after sterilisation, and they showed adequate values for the intended application. The hydrogels of both formulations were able to sustain controlled drug-release for, at least, 48 h. They were demonstrated to be non-irritant, highly haemocompatible, and non-cytotoxic, and revealed good antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Steam-heat sterilisation did not compromise the material's properties. The in vivo performance of C hydrogel loaded with Octiset® was evaluated in a case study with a dog. The efficient recovery of the wounds confirms its potential as an alternative for wound treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first time that wound dressings loaded with Octiset®, one of the most efficient drugs for wound treatment, were prepared and tested.

Abstract
One of the greatest challenges faced during surgical procedures is closing and healing of wounds, which are essential in the field of orthopaedics, trauma, intensive care and general surgery. One of the main causes of death has been linked to chronic wounds, especially in immunosuppressant or diabetic patients. Due to increasing chronic wound fatality along with different pathologies associated with them, the current therapeutic methods are insufficient which has established an eminent need for innovative techniques. Traditionally, wound healing was carried out using formulations and ointments containing silver combined with different biomaterial, but was found to be toxic. Hence, the advent of alternative nanomaterial-based therapeutics for effective wound healing have come into existence. In this review, we have discussed an overview of wound infections such as different wound types, the wound healing process, dressing of wounds and conventional therapies. Furthermore, we have explored various nanotechnological advances made in wound healing therapy which include the use of promising candidates such as organic, inorganic, hybrid nanoparticles/nanocomposites and synthetic/natural polymer-based nanofibers. This review further highlights nanomaterial-based applications for regeneration of tissue in wound healing and can provide a base for researchers worldwide to contribute to this advancing medical area of wound therapy.

Abstract
To improve the versatility of the sodium alginate-loaded bio-hydrogels, Antheraea pernyi silk gland protein/sodium alginate drug-loaded hydrogels were prepared by using an eco-friendly multiple network cross-link technology. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectrophotometer were used separately to evaluate the chemical structure and drug release behavior of drug-loaded hydrogels. The antibacterial drug carrier gels were evaluated by using inhibition zone test against the S. aureus and E. coli. The CCK-8 assay was used to assess the biocompatibility of drug loaded hydrogels. The FT-IR results showed that there was a strong interaction within the drug loaded hydrogels, and the ASGP was beneficial to enhance the interaction within the drug loaded hydrogels. UV-Vis spectrophotometer results indicated the cumulative release reached 80% within 400 min. Antibacterial bio-hydrogels had a good antibacterial property, especially the antibacterial bio-hydrogels with bacitracin exhibits superior to other antibacterial agents. The drug-loaded bio-hydrogels exhibited the adhesion and proliferation of RSC96 cells and perfected biocompatibility. This provides a new idea for further research and development of tissue-friendly drug-loaded biomaterials.

Abstract
Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have solved numerous problems related to the repair and regeneration of damaged organs and tissues arising from aging, illnesses, and injuries. Nanotechnology has further aided tissue regeneration science and has provided outstanding opportunities to help disease diagnosis as well as treat damaged tissues. Based on the most recent findings, magnetic nanostructures (MNSs), in particular, have emerged as promising materials for detecting, directing, and supporting tissue regeneration. There have been many reports concerning the role of these nano-building blocks in the regeneration of both soft and hard tissues, but the subject has not been extensively reviewed. Here, we review, classify, and discuss various synthesis strategies for novel MNSs used in medicine. Advanced applications of magnetic nanocomposites (MG-NCs), specifically magnetic nanostructures, are further systematically reviewed. In addition, the scientific and technical aspects of MG-NC used in medicine are discussed considering the requirements for the field. In summary, this review highlights the numerous opportunities and challenges associated with the use of MG-NCs as smart nanocomposites (NCs) in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Abstract
The Antheraea Pernyi silk gland protein originates from natural organisms and synthesized by tussah silk glands and has widely potential biomaterial applications due to the superior biocompatibility. This study investigates the Antheraea Pernyi silk gland protein-based drug-loaded bio-hydrogels for bioengineered tissue fabricated by using an eco-friendly method without the harsh extracting process and the usage of toxic chemicals. The drug-loaded bio-hydrogels exhibited a porous structure and interconnected pore walls. The swelling ratio and water absorption of drug-loaded bio-hydrogels were, respectively, above 95% and 1.5 × 103%. The cumulative release of drug loaded hydrogels all reached more than 90% within 4 h, and this indicates the potential of drug-loaded hydrogels as future drug-carrying biomaterials. RSC96 Schwann cells cultured on drug-loaded hydrogels for 72 h under cell culture medium show no toxic effects and more pro-proliferative effects. The results suggest the suitability of drug-loaded bio-hydrogels as natural biopolymer for the potential in vitro RSC96 cell culture platform and other biomaterial applications.

Regulatory and Enterotoxin Gene Expression and Enterotoxins Production in Staphylococcus aureus FRI913 Cultures Exposed to a Rotating Magnetic Field and trans-Anethole. Int J Mol Sci 2022; 23:ijms23116327. [PMID: 35683006 PMCID: PMC9181688 DOI: 10.3390/ijms23116327] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 05/06/2022] [Revised: 06/02/2022] [Accepted: 06/04/2022] [Indexed: 11/29/2022] Open
Abstract
The study aimed to examine the influence of a rotating magnetic field (RMF) of two different frequencies (5 and 50 Hz) on the expression of regulatory (agrA, hld, rot) and staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE—sea, sec, sel) genes as well as the production of SEs (SEA, SEC, SEL) by the Staphylococcus aureus FRI913 strain cultured on a medium supplemented with a subinhibitory concentration of trans-anethole (TA). Furthermore, a theoretical model of interactions between the bacterial medium and bacterial cells exposed to RMF was proposed. Gene expression and SEs production were measured using quantitative real-time PCR and ELISA techniques, respectively. Based on the obtained results, it was found that there were no significant differences in the expression of regulatory and SE genes in bacteria simultaneously cultured on a medium supplemented with TA and exposed to RMF at the same time in comparison to the control (unexposed to TA and RMF). In contrast, when the bacteria were cultured on a medium supplemented with TA but were not exposed to RMF or when they were exposed to RMF of 50 Hz (but not to TA), a significant increase in agrA and sea transcripts as compared to the unexposed control was found. Moreover, the decreased level of sec transcripts in bacteria cultured without TA but exposed to RMF of 50 Hz was also revealed. In turn, a significant increase in SEA and decrease in SEC and SEL production was observed in bacteria cultured on a medium supplemented with TA and simultaneously exposed to RMFs. It can be concluded, that depending on SE and regulatory genes expression as well as production of SEs, the effect exerted by the RMF and TA may be positive (i.e., manifests as the increase in SEs and/or regulatory gene expression of SEs production) or negative (i.e., manifests as the reduction in both aforementioned features) or none.

Abstract
Wound healing is a complex process that is critical in restoring the skin's barrier function. This process can be interrupted by numerous diseases resulting in chronic wounds that represent a major medical burden. Such wounds fail to follow the stages of healing and are often complicated by a pro‐inflammatory milieu attributed to increased proteinases, hypoxia, and bacterial accumulation. The comprehensive treatment of chronic wounds is still regarded as a significant unmet medical need due to the complex symptoms caused by the metabolic disorder of the wound microenvironment. As a result, several advanced medical devices, such as wound dressings, wearable wound monitors, negative pressure wound therapy devices, and surgical sutures, have been developed to correct the chronic wound environment and achieve skin tissue regeneration. Most medical devices encompass a wide range of products containing natural (e.g., chitosan, keratin, casein, collagen, hyaluronic acid, alginate, and silk fibroin) and synthetic (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, poly[lactic‐co‐glycolic acid], polycaprolactone, polylactic acid) polymers, as well as bioactive molecules (e.g., chemical drugs, silver, growth factors, stem cells, and plant compounds). This review addresses these medical devices with a focus on biomaterials and applications, aiming to deliver a critical theoretical reference for further research on chronic wound healing.

Abstract
During wound healing, bacterial infection is one of the main limiting factors for the desired efficiency. Wound dressing-mediated antibiotics therapies could overcome this problem to a great extent due to sustained drug release and controllable dose. Here, we designed a kind of alginate injectable hydrogel loaded with minocycline (SA@MC) as a dressing for staphylococcus aureus-infected wound healing. SA@MC hydrogel possessed good injectability and can be injected by syringes. MC participated in the gel formation, causing the microstructure change based on the morphology characterization. The element mapping and FT-IR spectra further confirmed the successful loading of MC in SA hydrogel. Interestingly, MC was released more efficiently in a weakly alkaline condition (pH 7–8) than in a weakly acidic condition (pH 4–6) from SA@MC injectable hydrogel, which means that there is an accelerated release to respond to the weakly alkaline wound microenvironment. Meanwhile, SA@MC injectable hydrogel had high biocompatibility and excellent antibacterial activity due to the sustained release of MC. Further, in vivo experiment results demonstrated that SA@MC injectable hydrogel promoted staphylococcus aureus-infected wound healing efficiently. In summary, the injectable composite hydrogel can serve as an ideal dressing to prevent bacterial infection and promote wound healing.

Abstract
Pathogens, especially drug-resistant pathogens caused by the abuse of antibiotics, have become a major threat to human health and public health safety. The exploitation and application of new antibacterial agents is extremely urgent. As a natural biopolymer, cellulose has recently attracted much attention due to its excellent hydrophilicity, economy, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. In particular, the preparation of cellulose-based hydrogels with excellent structure and properties from cellulose and its derivatives has received increasing attention thanks to the existence of abundant hydrophilic functional groups (such as hydroxyl, carboxy, and aldehyde groups) within cellulose and its derivatives. The cellulose-based hydrogels have broad application prospects in antibacterial-related biomedical fields. The latest advances of preparation and antibacterial application of cellulose-based hydrogels has been reviewed, with a focus on the antibacterial applications of composite hydrogels formed from cellulose and metal nanoparticles; metal oxide nanoparticles; antibiotics; polymers; and plant extracts. In addition, the antibacterial mechanism and antibacterial characteristics of different cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogels were also summarized. Furthermore, the prospects and challenges of cellulose-based antibacterial hydrogels in biomedical applications were also discussed.

Abstract
Curcumin is a promising anticancer agent, but its clinical utilization has been hindered by its low solubility and bioaccessibility. To overcome these obstacles, we developed a natural protein-polysaccharide nanocomplex made from casein nanoparticles coated with a double layer of alginate and chitosan and decorated with folic acid (fCs-Alg@CCasNPs) for use as a nanocarrier for curcumin. The developed nanoformulation showed a drug encapsulation efficiency = 75%. The measured size distribution of fCs-Alg@CCasNPs was 333.8 ± 62.35 nm with a polydispersity index (PDI) value of 0.179. The recorded zeta potential value of fCs-Alg@CCasNPs was 28.5 mV. Morphologically, fCs-Alg@CCasNPs appeared spherical, as shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The successful preparation of fCs-Alg@CCasNPs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of all the constituents forming the nanoformulation. Further in vitro investigations indicated the stability of fCs-Alg@CCasNPs as well as their controlled and sustained release of curcumin in the tumor microenvironment. Compared with free curcumin, fCs-Alg@CCasNPs induced a higher cytotoxic effect against a pancreatic cancer cell line. The in vivo pharmacokinetics of fCs-Alg@CCasNPs showed a significant AUC0-24 = 2307 ng.h/ml compared to 461 ng.h/ml of free curcumin; these results indicated high curcumin bioavailability in plasma. The in vivo results of tumor weight, the amount of DNA damage measured by comet assay and histopathological examination revealed that treating mice with fCs-Alg@CCasNPs (either intratumorally or intraperitonially) prompted higher therapeutic efficacy against Ehrlich carcinoma than treatment with free curcumin. Therefore, the incorporation of curcumin with protein/polysaccharide/folate is an innovative approach that can synergistically enhance curcumin bioavailability and potentiate cancer therapy with considerable biosafety.

Abstract
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based hydrogels are generally superabsorbent and biocompatible, but their low mechanical strength limits their application. To overcome these drawbacks, we used bacterial succinoglycan (SG), a biocompatible natural polysaccharide, as a double crosslinking strategy to produce novel interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels in a non-bead form. These new SG/CMC-based IPN hydrogels significantly increased the mechanical strength while maintaining the characteristic superabsorbent property of CMC-based hydrogels. The SG/CMC gels exhibited an 8.5-fold improvement in compressive stress and up to a 6.5-fold higher storage modulus (G') at the same strain compared to the CMC alone gels. Furthermore, SG/CMC gels not only showed pH-controlled drug release for 5-fluorouracil but also did not show any cytotoxicity to HEK-293 cells. This suggests that SG/CMC hydrogels could be used as future biomedical biomaterials for drug delivery.

Formalin-casein enhances water absorbency of calcium alginate beads and activity of encapsulated Metarhizium brunneum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. World J Microbiol Biotechnol 2021; 37:156. Abstract
The control of root-feeding wireworms has become more challenging as synthetic soil insecticides have been progressively phased out due to environmental risk concerns. Innovative microbial control alternatives such as the so-called attract-and-kill strategy depend on the rapid and successful development of dried encapsulated microorganisms, which is initiated by rehydration. Casein is a functional additive that is already used in food or pharmaceutical industry due to its water binding capacity. Cross-linked forms such as formalin-casein (FC), exhibit altered network structures. To determine whether FC influences the rehydration of alginate beads in order to increase the efficacy of an attract-and-kill formulation for wireworm pest control, we incorporated either casein or FC in different alginate/starch formulations. We investigated the porous properties of alginate/starch beads and subsequently evaluated the activities of the encapsulated entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium brunneum and the CO2 producing yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Adding caseins altered the porous structure of beads. FC decreased the bead density from (1.0197 ± 0.0008) g/mL to (1.0144 ± 0.0008) g/mL and the pore diameter by 31%. In contrast to casein, FC enhanced the water absorbency of alginate/starch beads by 40%. Furthermore, incorporating FC quadrupled the spore density on beads containing M. brunneum and S. cerevisiae, and simultaneous venting increased the spore density even by a factor of 18. Moreover, FC increased the total CO2 produced by M. brunneum and S. cerevisiae by 29%. Thus, our findings suggest that rehydration is enhanced by larger capillaries, resulting in an increased water absorption capacity. Our data further suggest that gas exchange is improved by FC. Therefore, our results indicate that FC enhances the fungal activity of both fungi M. brunneum and S. cerevisiae, presumably leading to an enhanced attract-and-kill efficacy for pest control.

Development of dual crosslinked mumio-based hydrogel dressing for wound healing application: Physico-chemistry and antimicrobial activity. Int J Pharm 2021; 607:120952. Abstract
In this study, an antimicrobial mumio-based hydrogel dressing was developed for wound healing application. The mechanism of gel formation was achieved via a double crosslink network formation between gelatin (GT) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) using polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) and borax as crosslinking agents. To enhance the mechanical integrity of the hydrogel matrix, bacterial cellulose (BC) was integrated into the GT-PVA hydrogel to produce a composite gel dressing. The obtained hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, SEM, TGA, and XRD. Gel fraction, in vitro swelling and degradation as well as compressive modulus properties of the gel dressing were investigated as a function of change in PVA and BC ratios. By increasing the ratios of PVA and BC, the composite dressing showed lower swelling but higher mechanical strength. Comparing to other formulations, the gel with 4 %w/v PVA and 1 %w/v BC demonstrated to be most suitable in terms of stability and mechanical properties. In vitro cell cytotoxicity by MTT assay on human alveolar basal epithelial (A549) cell lines validated the gels as non-toxic. In addition, the mumio-based gel was compared to other formulations containing different bioactive agents of beeswax and cinnamon oil, which were tested for microbial growth inhibition effects against different bacteria (S. aureus and K. pneumoniae) and fungi (C. albicans and A. niger) strains. Results suggested that the gel dressing containing combinations of mumio, beeswax and cinnamon oil possess promising future in the inhibition of microbial infection supporting its application as a suitable dressing for wound healing.

Abstract
The green synthesis of NPs through plant extracts can be a modest, one-pot alternative synthesis to the conventional physical or chemical method. The prime focus of this study is to produce MNPs by the reducing effect of Bauhinia tomentosa leaf extract, and it was immobilized in porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL). Synthesized NPs were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis Spectrometry, Thermogravimetry, and Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Zeta potential test, VSM, BET and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The effect of process parameters was studied, about the efficiency of immobilization are enzyme stability, the extent of enzyme reusability, its separation from products, the activity of immobilized enzyme, recovery, and its loss. Finally, the immobilized lipase was used for the synthesis of 1,3-diolein using enzyme-mediated esterification of oleic acid and glycerol. Under optimized condition (reaction temp-55 [Formula: see text]C; molar ratio-2.5:1; pH-7) diolein yield was achieved to be 94%. Therefore, this work was further used for the industrial production of 1,3-diacylglycerol since a perfect enzyme-catalyzed process was observed.

Functionalization of an Alginate-Based Material by Oxidation and Reductive Amination. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13020255. Abstract
This research focused on the synthesis of a functional alginate-based material via chemical modification processes with two steps: oxidation and reductive amination. In previous alginate functionalization with a target molecule such as cysteine, the starting material was purified and characterized by UV-Vis, 1H-NMR and HSQC. Additionally, the application of FT-IR techniques during each step of alginate functionalization was very useful, since new bands and spiked signals around the pyranose ring (1200–1000 cm−1) and anomeric region (1000–750 cm−1) region were identified by a second derivative. Additionally, the presence of C1-H1 of β-D-mannuronic acid residue as well as C1-H1 of α-L-guluronic acid residue was observed in the FT-IR spectra, including a band at 858 cm−1 with characteristics of the N-H moiety from cysteine. The possibility of attaching cysteine molecules to an alginate backbone by oxidation and post-reductive amination processes was confirmed through 13C-NMR in solid state; a new peak at 99.2 ppm was observed, owing to a hemiacetal group formed in oxidation alginate. Further, the peak at 31.2 ppm demonstrates the presence of carbon -CH2-SH in functionalized alginate—clear evidence that cysteine was successfully attached to the alginate backbone, with 185 μmol of thiol groups per gram polymer estimated in alginate-based material by UV-Visible. Finally, it was observed that guluronic acid residue of alginate are preferentially more affected than mannuronic acid residue in the functionalization.
