Assessment of the Influence of Protective Polymer Coating on Panda Fiber Performance Based on the Results of Multivariant Numerical Simulation

This article considers the deformation behavior of Panda optical fiber using different models of material behavior for the tasks of predicting residual stresses after drawing when cooling from 2000 °C to room temperature (23 °C) and indenting the fiber into an aluminum half-space at different parameters. These studies were conducted for single- and double-layer protective coatings (PCs), at different values of external load and thickness of single-layer PC. This paper determined the fields of residual stresses in the fiber formed during the drawing process. They are taken into account in modeling the fiber performance in the further process of this research. This article investigated two variants of PC behavior. The influence of behavior models and the number of covering layers on the deformation of the "fiber-half-space" system was analyzed. This paper establishes qualitative and quantitative regularities of the influence of the external load magnitude and relaxation properties of PCs on the deformation and optical characteristics of Panda optical fiber.

Relaxation Model of the Relations between the Elastic Modulus and Thermal Expansivity of Thermosetting Polymers and FRPs

This research was completed in the development of studies devoted to relations between the elastic modulus (MoE) and thermal expansivity (CTe) of different materials. This study, based on experimental data, confirmed the models of the relations between MoE and CTe under normal and heating temperatures for thermosetting epoxy polymers and glass-fiber FRPs in two variants (unfilled and filled by mineral additives), after the usual glassing and prolonged thermal conditioning (thermo-relaxation). The experiment was based on dilatometric and elastic deformation testing. Two models of MoE/CTe were tested: Barker's model and our authors relaxation model (MoE = f(CTe)), which is based on previous modelling of the non-linearity of the physical properties of polymers' supramolecular structures. The result show that the models' constants depend on composition; Barker's model is applicable only to polymers with satisfying agreement degrees in the range 10-20%; our model is applicable to polymers and FRPs with satisfying agreement degrees in the range of 6-18%.

Temperature and Humidity Sensitivity of Polymer Optical Fibre Sensors Tuned by Pre-Strain

Polymer optical fibre Bragg grating (POFBG) sensors are of high interest due to their enhanced fracture toughness, flexibility in bending, and sensitivity in stress and pressure monitoring applications compared to silica-based sensors. The POFBG sensors can also detect humidity due to the hydrophilic nature of some polymers. However, multi-parameter sensing can cause cross-sensitivity issues in certain applications if the temperature and humidity measurements are not adequately compensated. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility of selectively tuning sensors' temperature and humidity sensitivities to the desired level by applying a certain amount of fibre pre-strain. The temperature sensitivity of POFBG sensors fabricated in perfluoropolymers (CYTOP) can be selectively tuned from positive to negative values, having the option for insensitivity in specific temperature ranges depending on the amount of the applied pre-strain. The humidity sensitivity of sensors can also be changed from positive values to insensitivity. The importance of thermal annealing treatment of POFBG sensors for improved repeatability in temperature measurements is also reported. An array of 4 multiplexed POFBGs was fabricated, and each sensor was pre-strained accordingly to demonstrate the possibility of having targeted temperature and humidity sensitivities along the same fibre.

Analysis of the Polymer Two-Layer Protective Coating Impact on Panda-Type Optical Fiber under Bending

The article discusses the effects of thermal-force on the Panda-type optical fiber. The studies used a wide temperature range. The research used two thermal cycles with exposures to temperatures of 23, 60 and −60 °C. The field of residual stresses in the fiber formed during the drawing process was determined and applied. Panda was considered taking into account a two-layer viscoelastic polymer coating under conditions of tension winding on an aluminum coil in the framework of a contact problem. The paper investigated three variants of coil radius to analyze the effect of bending on fiber behavior. The effect of the coating thickness ratio on the system deformation and optical characteristics was analyzed. Qualitative and quantitative patterns of the effect of temperature, bending, thickness of individual polymer coating layers and relaxation transitions of their materials on the Panda optical fiber deformation and optical characteristics were established. Assessment of approaches to the calculation of optical characteristics (values of the refractive indices and fiber birefringence) are given in the framework of the study. The patterns of deformation and optical behavior of the Panda-type fiber with a protective coating, taking into account the nonlinear behavior of the system materials, were original results.

Evaluation on the Seal Performance of SMP-Based Packers in Oil Wells

Packers based on shape memory polymers (SMPs) are an emerging technology that have the advantages of compact structure, easy manufacture, and adaptability to complex wells. This paper proposes a finite element model to simulate the setting process and mechanical response of an SMP packer. The investigated material is an epoxy-based thermal responsive SMP, whose relaxation modulus and thermal expansion coefficient were measured at different temperatures. Based on the experimental data, the model describes the viscoelastic behavior of the SMP using the generalized Maxwell model. The results show that the SMP packer could provide sufficient contact stress under downhole conditions, even after the stress was relaxed. A further parametric study revealed that the most significant factor in sealing effects is the wellbore pressure, followed by the interference between the packer and the annular, the seal length, the pre-compression, and the setting temperature. High downhole pressures require more significant contact stress and increase the risk of slip between the packer and casing wall by promoting shear stress. Increasing the seal length and interference enhances the contact stress and mitigates the shear stress to improve the seal performance. Pre-compression and setting temperatures are minor factors that have little influence on sealability.
