All-Fiber Measurement of Surface Tension Using a Two-Hole Fiber

Highly Coupled Seven-Core Fiber for Ratiometric Anti-Phase Sensing

A ratiometric fiber optic temperature sensor based on a highly coupled seven-core fiber (SCF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A theoretical analysis of the SCF's sinusoidal spectral response in transmission configuration is presented. The proposed sensor comprises two SCF devices exhibiting anti-phase transmission spectra. Simple fabrication of the devices is shown by just splicing a segment of a 2 cm long SCF between two single-mode fibers (SMFs). The sensor proved to be robust against light source fluctuations, as a standard deviation of 0.2% was registered in the ratiometric measurements when the light source varied by 12%. Its low-cost detection system (two photodetectors) and the range of temperature detection (25 °C to 400 °C) make it a very attractive and promising device for real industrial applications.

Enhanced Frequency Stability of SAW Yarn Tension Sensor by Using the Dual Differential Channel Surface Acoustic Wave Oscillator

This paper presents a 60 MHz surface acoustic wave (SAW) yarn tension sensor incorporating a novel SAW oscillator with high-frequency stability. A SAW delay line was fabricated on ST-X quartz substrate using the unbalanced-split electrode and bi-directional engraving slots. The dual differential channel delay linear acoustic surface wave oscillator is designed and implemented to test yarn tension, which can effectively remove the interference of temperature, humidity, and other peripheral factors through differential design. The yarn tension sensor using the surface acoustic wave has high-precision characteristics, and the SAW delay line oscillator is designed to ensure the test system’s stable operation. The effect of time and tension on oscillator frequency stability is studied in detail, and the single oscillator and the dual differential channel system were tested, respectively. After using the dual differential channel system, the short-term frequency stability from is reduced from 1.0163 ppm to 0.17726 ppm, the frequency accuracy of the tension sensor is improved from 134 Hz to 27 Hz, and the max frequency jump steady is reduced from 2.2395 ppm to 0.45123 ppm.

Evaluation of Viscosity Dependence of the Critical Meniscus Height with Optical Fiber Sensors

Conventional means of data extraction using optical fiber interrogators are not adequate for fast-paced detection of a target parameter. In this instance, the relationship between the critical meniscus heights (CMH) of several liquids to the extraction speed of a rod submerged in them, have been analyzed. A limitation of a previous interrogator used for the purpose had been light absorption by the liquid due to the used bandwidth of the readily-available light source, i.e., C-band. The newly proposed technique addresses this limitation by utilizing a broadband light source instead, with a Si-photodetector and an Arduino. In addition, the Arduino is capable of extracting data at a relatively faster rate with respect to the conventional optical interrogator. The use of a different operational wavelength (850 nm instead of 1550 nm) increased the r² and the sensitivity of the sensor. The new setup can measure surface chemistry properties, with the advantage of being comparatively cheaper than the conventionally available interrogator units, thereby providing a suitable alternative to conventional measurement techniques of liquid surface properties, while reducing material waste, i.e., in terms of the required volume for detection of a target parameter, through the use of optical fiber.
