Emerging Contaminants: An Overview of Recent Trends for Their Treatment and Management Using Light-Driven Processes

Continuous UV-C/H2O2 and UV-C/Chlorine applied to municipal secondary effluent and nanofiltration retentate: Removal of contaminants of emerging concern, ecotoxicity, and reuse potential

As global effects of water scarcity raise concerns and environmental regulations evolve, contemporary wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) face the challenge of effectively removing a diverse range of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from municipal effluents. This study focuses on the assessment of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), specifically UV-C/H2O2 and UV-C/Chlorine, for the removal of 14 target CECs in municipal secondary effluent (MSE, spiked with 10 μg L-1 of each CEC) or in the subsequent MSE nanofiltration retentate (NFR, no spiking). Phototreatments were carried out in continuous mode operation, with a hydraulic retention time of 3.4 min, using a tube-in-tube membrane photoreactor. For both wastewater matrices, UV-C photolysis (3.3 kJ L-1) exhibited high efficacy in removing CECs susceptible to photolysis, although lower treatment performance was observed for NFR. In MSE, adding 10 mg L-1 of H2O2 or Cl2 enhanced treatment efficiency, with UV-C/H2O2 outperforming UV-C/Chlorine. Both UV-C/AOPs eliminated the chronic toxicity of MSE toward Chlorella vulgaris. In the NFR, not only was the degradation of target CECs diminished, but chronic toxicity to C. vulgaris persisted after both UV-C/AOPs, with UV-C/Chlorine increasing toxicity due to potential toxic by-products. Nanofiltration permeate (NFP) exhibited low CECs and microbial content. A single chlorine addition effectively controlled Escherichia coli regrowth for 3 days, proving NFP potential for safe reuse in crop irrigation (<1 CFU/100 mL for E. coli; <1 mg L-1 for free chlorine). These findings provide valuable insights into the applications and limitations of UV-C/H2O2 and UV-C/Chlorine for distinct wastewater treatment scenarios.

Solar photo-Fenton and persulphate-based processes for landfill leachate treatment: A critical review

Landfilling is the most usual solid waste management strategy for solid residues disposal. However, it entails several drawbacks such as the generation of landfill leachate that seriously threaten human life and the environment due to their toxicity and carcinogenic character. Among various technologies, solar photo-Fenton and sulphate-based processes have proven to be suitable for the treatment of these polluted streams. This review critically summarises the last three decades of studies in this field. It is found that the solar homogeneous photo-Fenton process should be preferably used as a pre- and post-treatment of biological technologies and as a standalone treatment for young, medium, and mature leachates, respectively. Studies on heterogeneous solar photo-Fenton process are lacking so that this technology may be scaled-up for industrial applications. Sulphate radicals are attractive for removing both COD and ammonia. However, no study has been reported on solar sulphate activation for landfill leachate treatment. This review discusses the main advances and challenges on treating landfill leachate through solar AOPs, it compares solar photo-Fenton and solar persulphate-based treatments, indicates the future research directions and contributes for a better understanding of these technologies towards sustainable treatment of landfill leachate in sunny and not-so-sunny regions.

Dextrin-Based Adsorbents Synthesized via a Sustainable Approach for the Removal of Salicylic Acid from Water

Pharmaceuticals such as salicylic acid are commonly detected in wastewater and surface waters, increasing concern for possible harmful effects on humans and the environment. Their difficult removal via conventional treatments raised the need for improved strategies, among which the development of bioderived adsorbents gained interest because of their sustainability and circularity. In this work, biobased cross-linked adsorbents, synthesized via a sustainable approach from starch derivatives, namely beta-cyclodextrins and maltodextrins, were at first characterized via FTIR-ATR, TGA, SEM, and elemental analysis, showing hydrophilic granular morphologies endowed with specific interaction sites and thermal stabilities higher than 300 °C. Subsequently, adsorption tests were carried out, aiming to assess the capabilities of such polymers on the removal of salicylic acid, as a case study, from water. Batch tests showed rapid kinetics of adsorption with a removal of salicylic acid higher than 90% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 17 mg/g. Accordingly, continuous fixed bed adsorption tests confirmed the good interaction between the polymers and salicylic acid, while the recycling of the adsorbents was successfully performed up to four cycles of use.

Periodic mesoporous organosilicas containing naphthalenediimides as organic sensitizers for sulfadiazine photodegradation

In this work, periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMO) functionalized with the organic sentisizer naphthalenediimide (NDI) were employed as heterogeneous catalysts for the photodegradation of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ), taken as a model for contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). The catalysts, designated as PMONDI, were prepared by surfactant-directed co-condensation of the precursor N,N'-bis(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)- 1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide with tetraethoxysilane. The synthesized PMONDI were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption isotherms and small and large angle x-ray scattering. The performance of PMONDI catalysts in the photodegradation of SDZ was compared to that of TiO₂ nanoparticles impregnated into SBA-15 mesoporous silica (TiO₂/SBA-15), under irradiation with a Hg lamp with a bandpass filter of 320-500 nm. Under optimal conditions, PMONDI degraded 100% of the SDZ in 45 min, while the total degradation of SDZ was achieved only after 150 min with TiO₂/SBA-15. PMONDI also performed better than TiO₂/SBA-15 in reuse tests. The mechanism of photodegradation with PMONDI involves the formation of excited triplet states of NDI (³NDI*) upon irradiation, which can then react with molecular oxygen to form reactive oxygen species, which degrade SDZ. Analysis of the SDZ degradation products indicated two main pathways: (1) hydroxylation of the aniline ring and (2) SO₂ extrusion and rearrangement, followed by oxidation of the aniline ring to nitrobenzene. In conclusion, the great potential of the PMONDI materials as photocatalysts for CECs degradation was demonstrated in this work, encouraging further research on these materials for the degradation of pollutants.

Pharmaceutical Transformation Products Formed by Ozonation-Does Degradation Occur?

The efficiency of an advanced oxidation process (AOP) using direct and indirect ozonation for the removal of pharmaceutical residues from deliberately spiked deionized water was examined. Both direct and indirect ozonation demonstrated 34% to 100% removal of the parent compounds. However, based on the products' chemical structure and toxicity, we suggest that despite using accepted and affordable ozone and radical concentrations, the six parent compounds were not fully degraded, but merely transformed into 25 new intermediate products. The transformation products (TPs) differed slightly in structure but were mostly similar to their parent compounds in their persistence, stability and toxicity; a few of the TPs were found to be even more toxic than their parent compounds. Therefore, an additional treatment is required to improve and upgrade the traditional AOP toward degradation and removal of both parent compounds and their TPs for safer release into the environment.

Recent Progress in the Removal of Legacy and Emerging Organic Contaminants from Wastewater Using Metal-Organic Frameworks: An Overview on Adsorption and Catalysis Processes

Water covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface, but the amount of freshwater available for human use is only 2.5% and, although it is continuously replenished via the water cycle, freshwater is a finite and limited resource. The Earth’s water is affected by pollution and while water quality is an issue of global concern, the specific regulations on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are limited. In order to achieve the goals set by EU regulations, the treatment of wastewater is a scientifically and technologically challenging issue. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials used for the removal of priority and emerging contaminants from wastewater, since they can mitigate those contaminants via both adsorption as well as catalysis processes. MOFs can offer selective adsorption of CECs by various adsorption mechanisms. The catalytic removal of priority and emerging organic contaminants from wastewater using MOFs implies Fenton, electro-Fenton, and photo-Fenton processes. Overall, MOFs can be considered as promising materials for the elimination of priority and emerging organic contaminants from various wastewater types, but the involved processes must be studied in detail for a larger number of compounds.

Facile preparation of nanocellulose/Zn-MOF-based catalytic filter for water purification by oxidation process

Sulfate radical (SO₄^•-)-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have recently attracted much attention due to their potential in degrading organic pollutants. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported as effective materials to generate SO₄^•-. However, it is challenging to separate and recover the dispersed MOF particles from the reaction solution when MOFs are used alone. We used cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as a porous filter template to immobilize Zn-based MOF, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), and obtained a catalytic composite membrane having peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activating function to produce SO₄^•-. The CNF was effective in holding ZIF-8 nanoparticle and making a durable porous filter. The activated PMS-produced ^•OH and SO₄^•- radicals from ZIF-8 play an important role in the catalytic reaction. More than 90% of methylene blue and rhodamine B was degraded by ZIF-8/CNFs composite membrane in the PMS environment within 60 min. The ZIF-8/CNFs catalytic filters can be used several times without performance reduction for organic dye degradation. The results show that ZIF-8/CNFs catalytic membrane can be separated from organic pollution system quickly and used for the efficient separation and recovery of MOF particle-based catalytic materials. Therefore, this study provides a new perspective for fabricating the MOFs particles-immobilized catalytic filter by biomass nanocellulose-based materials for water purification. This method can be used for facile fabrication of the cellulose-based porous functional filter and open diverse applications.
