Early onset of breeding season in the green toad Bufotes viridis in Western Poland

Oswaldocruzia ukrainae (Nematoda: Molineidae)-A Parasite of European Green Toad Bufotes viridis: Morphological and Molecular Data

Nematodes of the genus Oswaldocruzia are common parasites of the small intestine of amphibians and reptiles. Our recent molecular analysis of Oswaldocruzia nematodes revealed that only Oswaldocruzia filiformis, which possesses high morphological variability, parasitizes amphibians and reptiles in European Russia. Here we present the study of Oswaldocruzia nematodes from the European green toad Bufotes viridis (Anura, Bufonidae) collected at different localities of the Middle Volga region in 2018-2022. We analyzed the morphological characteristics of the Oswaldocruzia spp. taxonomy together with novel molecular phylogenetic data. The data on phylogenetic analysis (based on partial CoxI mtDNA gene sequences) showed that Bufotes viridis is parasitized by two Oswaldocruzia species, the host-specific parasite Oswaldocruzia ukrainae and species generalist Oswaldocruzia filiformis. Broad morphological variability was revealed in O. ukrainae nematodes both from the same host specimen and from various toad individuals from different localities. Our results highlight the need for further biodiversity research of morphologically similar Oswaldocruzia species from amphibians and reptiles in the Western Palearctic using molecular genetic methods.

Stormwater ponds as an amphibian breeding site: a case study with European green toad tadpoles

Stormwater ponds (SWPs) are built to collect and retain polluted runoff water from roads. Consequently, they are not perceived as suitable habitat for wetland species, such as many amphibians. However, given the drastic decline of wetland areas, SWPs may serve as a habitat for protected amphibian species, such as the European green toad (Bufotes viridis). The latter species is frequently found inside these artificial ponds, but their reproductive success is unknown. We assessed the suitability of SWPs as breeding habitat for European green toads by monitoring 8 SWPs and 8 semi-natural ponds (SNPs), which served as control sites. At each site, two groups of 30 tadpoles, originating at that site, were held inside two floating enclosures that contained sediment from the respective pond. During bi-weekly monitoring, tadpoles were counted and measured, allowing to estimate growth and mortality rates. A variety of biotic and abiotic factors were studied to determine the causes of potential differences in growth and mortality rates between the two pond types. While growth rate did not differ between pond types, mortality rates were significantly greater in SWPs than in SNPs. The extremely low survival rate observed in SWPs might be explained by the considerably greater pollutant concentration in their sediment and/or by the presence of leeches, which were found exclusively inside SWPs. Implementation of management measures, such as regular draining/dredging during winter, might help to lower the pollutant concentration in the sediment and reduce the density of leeches inside SWPs, improving their suitability as habitat for amphibians.

Skeletal morphology and fluctuating asymmetry of the European green toad, Bufotes viridis, in contrasting habitats

Current environment changes and global amphibian decline suggest specific responses assuming urbanisation potential of the species. Amphibians are generally considered to be suitable bio-indicators of environmental health due to their ecological requirements. Therefore, fluctuating asymmetry (FA), a measure of small random deviations from bilateral symmetry is used for assessing morphological disruptions and parallelly the environment health. We measured the snout-vent length and lengths of five skeletal traits of limbs (humerus, radioulna, femur, tibiofibula, calcaneus) among the five European green toad populations from two contrasting habitats (urban and rural). We did not confirm our hypothesis that urban populations would exhibit higher level of FA as an indicator of higher environmental stress comparing to rural populations. However, asymmetry measured on forelimb bones was significantly larger than on hindlimbs. In addition, one urban population had significantly longer limbs comparing to the other sites.

Gigantism in tadpoles and color anomalies in European green toad Bufotes viridis from Poland

Some new cases of anomalies in wild Bufotes viridis from Western Poland are presented together with a discussion of their potential causes and a comparison with similar cases from the literature. The anomalies in question are color aberrations (pre- and post-metamorphic) and developmental pathologies (pre–metamorphic). The color anomalies include an ochre patch in a juvenile, leucism and albinism in both tadpoles and juvenile individuals. Developmental pathologies described in this paper include gigantism, edema, curvature of tail, and asymmetric bodies.

The European green toad, Bufotes viridis, in Donaufeld (Vienna, Austria): status and size of the population

The European green toad, Bufotes viridis (Laurenti, 1768), is a rare and protected species in Vienna. In spring and summer 2020, we conducted a survey to assess size and status of its population in Donaufeld, an agricultural area designated for real estate development. Recaptures of photographically registered toads allowed to estimate the population size with 137 individuals (confidence interval: 104–181). Comparatively large body size indicates the presence of a well-established population. Reproductive success was high in the study year. A mismatch mating of a male B. viridis with a female Bufo bufo was observed. Mitigation measures are needed to support this population facing imminent habitat deterioration.
