Nursing Students' Representations of Sexual Diversity: A Qualitative Analysis of Cultural Competence Development Using Narrative Photography

INTRODUCTION

To address health disparities among LGBTIQ+ communities, nurses must demonstrate cultural competence. This study aims to explore nursing students' perceptions of sexual diversity to enhance their cultural competence.

METHODS

A descriptive qualitative methodology was utilized with 48 first-year nursing students at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain). Students created narrative photographs with reflective quotes to illustrate their understanding sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

RESULTS

The thematic analysis of 62 images and reflections identified five themes: Recognizing diversity by expanding my cultural knowledge, Developing my cultural awareness, Gender and sexuality as cultural construction, Empathy as a bridge for transcultural care, and Becoming an ally. The findings indicate that students possess a strong understanding of LGBTIQ+ health issues and a commitment to fostering inclusive health care settings.

DISCUSSION

The study highlights the necessity of integrating LGBTIQ+ health content into nursing curricula to improve cultural competence and mitigate health disparities.

Effect of narrative photography to improve physical therapy students' learning outcomes when studying heart transplantation: A randomized controlled trial

Physical therapy students must learn about heart transplantation. They need to know how to care for these patients' emotions and needs. The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a narrative photography (NP) program and a traditional learning (TL) program in physical therapy students' knowledge, satisfaction, empathy, and moral sensitivity. A two-armed assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial was carried out. One hundred and seventeen physical therapy students participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: (i) NP group (n = 56) and (ii) TL group (n = 61). At the end of the program, NP group's knowledge increased when compared with the TL group (p = 0.02). 90.57% of the sample was very satisfied/satisfied with the NP method, and 88.68% felt that NP helped them to understand the importance of considering subjective realities. In conclusion, NP improved knowledge and satisfaction compared with the TL group. These results suggest that NP may be a useful method to improve the academic outcomes of physical therapy students in the heart transplantation field; thus, NP may be considered a teaching-learning methodology of choice in physical therapy students.

Development and psychometric testing of the narrative nursing teaching effectiveness scale: A methodological study

BACKGROUND

Narrative teaching is widely used in nursing education. However, there is currently a lack of valid and reliable tool to assess the effectiveness of narrative nursing teaching from the perspective of nursing students.

OBJECTIVES

This study developed a Narrative Nursing Teaching Effectiveness (NNTE) scale and evaluated its psychometric properties.

DESIGN

A methodological design was used to develop and validate the instrument.

SETTINGS

The study took place at a university in southern China.

PARTICIPANTS

The study involved 283 nursing students enrolled at a medical university in Fujian Province, China.

METHODS

The researchers conducted literature reviews, held focus groups and individual interviews, and utilized the Delphi method to create a pool of indicators for a narrative nursing teaching evaluation system. A pretest was administered to 150 nursing students. Next, the primary study involved 283 nursing students, chosen through cluster sampling, completed a general information questionnaire along with the NNTE scale. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0, Mplus 6.1, and STATA 16.0, and included general statistical analysis, critical test theory, and item response theory analyses.

RESULTS

The researchers created a 42-item scale with four subdomains, explaining 60.32 % of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis proved the four-factor model's validity. Cronbach's alpha values for the four subscales ranged from 0.869 to 0.949. The average content validity index of the scale was 0.923 and the item content validity index ranged from 0.872 to 1. In addition, all item characteristic curves displayed desirable shapes, and the test information functions provided precise information.

CONCLUSIONS

The NNTE scale exhibits good psychometric properties, providing a scientifically sound and effective instrument to evaluate the effectiveness of the narrative nursing teaching approach to nursing education.
