Anti-inflammatory activity of a natural herbal-marine drug (MS14 - SANT and SUSP) compared to sodium salicylate or methylprednisolone in a rat model for multiple sclerosis

The anti-inflammatory effects of minocycline on lipopolysaccharide-induced paw oedema in rats: a histopathological and molecular study

Minocycline is a semi-synthetic antimicrobial agent with claimed anti-inflammatory properties reported from different experimental models. This study was aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of minocycline, compared to the actions of two common anti-inflammatory agents, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced paw oedema through some clinical, histopathological, haematological and molecular analyses. Forty-eight rats were divided into eight groups (n = 6). In control group (Ctrl), each animal was injected with normal saline into its sub-plantar region of hind paw. In groups 2-7, hind paw oedema was induced by injection of LPS. One hour before injections, groups 1 (Ctrl) and 2 (LPS) were treated orally with distilled water, 3 and 4 with methylprednisolone (Pred) and meloxicam (Melo) and 5-7 with minocycline in doses of 50, 150 and 450 mg/kg (M50, M150 and M450, respectively). The 8th group (MC) was given minocycline (150 mg/kg) orally and normal saline was injected into sub-plantar region. Paw swelling and body temperature were assessed at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 24 h post-injections. At 24 h, samples of blood and liver, kidney, spleen and hind paw tissues were taken for haematological and histopathological examinations. Some samples of the paw were also obtained for molecular analysis of some inflammatory-related cytokines at mRNA level. Paw swelling and body temperature increased in all LPS-injected groups 2 h post-injection. In LPS group, they remained significantly increased up to 24 h; however, these parameters decreased to normal in Pred, Melo and all minocycline groups. The histological findings showed mild-to-moderate signs of inflammation in tissue samples of groups 2-6, but not in group M450. Additionally, gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) increased significantly in LPS group compared to other groups. In conclusion, this study supports the role of minocycline as an anti-inflammatory agent with effects comparable to those of meloxicam and methylprednisolone.

Comparative investigation of analgesic tolerance to taurine, sodium salicylate and morphine: Involvement of peripheral muscarinic receptors

Nowadays various analgesic medications are used for the management of acute and chronic pain. Among these opioid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs stand in the first line of therapy, however, prolonged administration of these substance is generally challenged by development of analgesic tolerance in patients. Therefore, it is highly valuable to find new pharmacological strategies for prolonged therapeutic procedures. In this respect, Taurine, a free amino acid, has been shown to induce significant analgesia at both spinal and peripheral levels through cholinergic mechanisms. In the present study, we used hot-plate analgesic test to investigate how taurine either as a single medication or in combination with sodium salicylate and morphine may affect both acute response to pain and development of analgesic tolerance. The effect of taurine was also tested on morphine withdrawal syndrome. Hyoscine butyl bromide was used to assess the role of muscarinic receptors in taurine-mediated effects. Finally, biochemical assay was done to reveal how the activity of brain acetylcholinesterase may change in relation with muscarinic receptor activity. Results indicated that acute administration of taurine-sodium salicylate combination causes more potent analgesia compared to the use of tau (but not SS alone) and this seems to be mediated via activity of muscarinic receptors in peripheral nervous system. Furthermore, the effect of this combination undergoes less analgesic tolerance during time. Combination of taurine and morphine is an effective strategy to attenuate both morphine analgesic tolerance and dependence and this also seems to depend on activity of muscarinic receptors, however through differential cellular mechanisms.

Research output of Iran over the past two years: Contributions from the European Journal of Translational Myology

Over the last two decades, all branches of science and technology have rapidly progressed, including the medical area. In Middle Eastern countries, including Iran, the increased growth of technology and science production has led to this rapid medical progress. Recent evidence has revealed that the increase in the number of scientific papers generated in Iran after the Iraqi imposed war against Iran has been eight times that in six main countries in the Middle East, including Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria. Although Iran's output in sciences has been still small in comparison to developed countries, it has significantly grown in the last decade, which is hoped to continue to increase and improve. The current paper shows a portion of the science production in Iran over the past two years based on papers published in the European Journal of Translational Myology in 2020 and 2021. Although the Issue 32 (1), 2022 in a special section contains several typescripts from Iran, they were not included in our analysis since they have not been yet indexed in the Scopus database. However, our report would encourage researchers of diverse nationalities to take part in research works and author joint papers. Further, this paper can be used to rate the universities and research centers regarding their science output, as well as being beneficial to university students, lecturers, and governments.
