'Isolated together': online group treatments during the COVID-19 pandemic. A systematic review

Using Extended Reality to Enhance Effectiveness and Group Identification in Remote Group Therapy for Anxiety Disorders: A Critical Analysis

Group therapy is a scalable and effective treatment for anxiety disorders. However, when performed online, the reduced ability to identify with group members and the reduced interactivity can limit its appeal and effectiveness. Extended reality (XR) technology, including virtual reality and augmented reality, may help address these limitations, thereby enhancing the reach of online group therapy and the benefits that can be drawn from it. To understand how the incorporation of XR technology may improve online group therapy for anxiety disorders, this viewpoint paper examines evidence related to the treatment of anxiety disorders using offline group therapy, online group therapy, and virtual reality, as well as ways to increase social identification and interactivity with the platform, the therapist, and other users. This viewpoint paper suggests ways to integrate these research streams to leverage the strengths of XR platforms and improve group therapeutic offerings.

The Role of Social Media in the Experiences of COVID-19 Among Long-Hauler Women: Qualitative Study

BACKGROUND

The extant literature suggests that women are more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection and at higher risk for developing long COVID. Due to pandemic mitigation recommendations, social media was relied upon for various aspects of daily life, likely with differences of usage between genders.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore the role and functions of social media in the lives of long-hauler women.

METHODS

Participants were purposively snowball-sampled from an online health promotion intervention for long-hauler women with COVID-19 from March to June 2021. During this time, one-on-one, semistructured interviews were conducted online until data saturation was agreed to have been achieved (ie, 15 interviews). Interview transcripts and field notes were analyzed using an emergent, inductive approach.

RESULTS

In total, 15 women were enrolled. The main roles of social media included facilitating support group participation, experience sharing, interpersonal connections, and media consumption. Emergent themes demonstrated that participants rely on social media to fulfill needs of emotional support, social engagement, spirituality, health planning, information gathering, professional support, and recreationally for relaxation. As long-hauler women turn to social media to discuss symptom and health management as well as the intention to vaccinate, this study demonstrates both the associated benefits (ie, decreased isolation) and challenges (ie, misinformation, rumination, resentment, jealousy).

CONCLUSIONS

The public health implications of these findings support the development of gender-tailored health promotion interventions that leverage the benefits of social media, while mitigating the negative impacts, for women with long COVID.

Systematic Adaptation of the JOBS Program for Use with Adults with Visual Impairments

Introduction

The purpose of this study was to use a systematic process to adapt the JOBS program, an evidence-based job search intervention, for use with unemployed adults with visual impairments and implementation via videoconferencing.

Method

The Planned Adaptation approach, an established framework for adapting evidence-based practices, guided the adaptations. The four-step Planned Adaptation process comprised examining the program's theory of change, identifying population differences, adapting the program content, and adapting the evaluation strategy.

Results

The original JOBS program has five key components, two critical causal mechanisms, and several potential moderators. Differences between the original and new target populations include needs, experiences, and employment barriers. Adaptations included activity changes, new processes to enhance outcomes, and changes to the implementation procedures. The evaluation plan for the adapted program includes a pilot study to test the updated activities, processes, and procedures, followed by an efficacy study to assess outcomes.

Discussion

The JOBS program was a strong candidate for systematic adaptation due to its theoretical foundation, thorough documentation, and established active ingredients. Stakeholder input increased the relevance and feasibility of the adaptations. Future research is needed to evaluate the adapted program and its outcomes.

Application for Practitioners

After completion of the evaluation plan, the new JOBS adaptation will be available for practitioners to use with adults with visual impairments. Practitioners may find the Planned Adaptation approach useful for adapting other programs to better meet the needs of the population they serve.

It turned into something else: patients' long-term experiences of transitions to or from telepsychotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic

Introduction

The shift from in-person therapy to telepsychotherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic was unprepared for, sudden, and inevitable. This study explored patients' long-term experiences of transitions to telepsychotherapy and back to the office.

Methods

Data were collected approximately two years after the declaration of COVID-19 as a pandemic. Eleven patients were interviewed (nine women and two men, aged 28 to 56, six in psychodynamic psychotherapy, five in CBT). Treatments switched between in-person and video/telephone sessions. Interview transcripts were analyzed applying the qualitative methodology of inductive thematic analysis.

Results

(1) The patients experienced the process in telepsychotherapy as impeded. Interventions were difficult to understand and lost impact. Routines surrounding the therapy sessions were lost. Conversations were less serious and lost direction. (2) Understanding was made more difficult when the nuances of non-verbal communication were lost. (3) The emotional relationship was altered. Remote therapy was perceived as something different from regular therapy, and once back in the therapy room, the patients felt that therapy started anew. The emotional presence was experienced as weakened, but some of the patients found expressing their feelings easier in the absence of bodily co-presence. According to the patients, in-person presence contributed to their security and trust, whereas they felt that the therapists were different when working remotely, behaving in a more easygoing and familiar way, as well as more solution-focused, supportive and unprofessional, less understanding and less therapeutic. Despite this, (4) telepsychotherapy also gave the patients an opportunity to take therapy with them into their everyday lives.

Discussion

The results suggest that in the long run, remote psychotherapy was seen as a good enough alternative when needed. The present study indicates that format alternations have an impact on which interventions can be implemented, which can have important implications for psychotherapy training and supervision in an era when telepsychotherapy is becoming increasingly common.
