Abstract
The immune system, sports injuries, physical activity and clinical sports nutrition are closely linked. Inadequate nutrition and intense stress in athletes increase the risk of immune dysfunction, injury and disease, while injury reduces the positive effects of physical activity, creating a vicious cycle affecting health and performance. Nutritional support is key to reducing the risk of injury, speeding up recovery and shortening rehabilitation. The intake of energy, protein, carbohydrates, fats and micronutrients should be adapted to the needs following injury. Quality nutrition is preferred over the use of dietary supplements, which are limited to cases of identified deficiencies (e.g. vitamin D or iron deficiencies). Health professionals with knowledge of clinical nutrition have a key role to play in injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, and nutritional interventions are an indispensable part of a holistic approach to athletes' health.

Abstract
Introduction: Meniscus injuries are common among endurance athletes, requiring structured rehabilitation to restore function and facilitate a safe return to sport. Traditional in-person rehabilitation may not always be accessible or feasible for high-performance athletes. Telerehabilitation, incorporating virtual reality, motion tracking, and telemonitoring, offers an innovative approach to guided recovery. However, evidence supporting its effectiveness in elite athletes remains limited. Case presentation: This case report explores the application of an innovative telerehabilitation program for a 49-year-old triathlete recovering from partial meniscectomy following a medial meniscus tear. The program was structured into three progressive phases over 12 weeks, focusing on restoring range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, and functional stability while gradually reintroducing sports-specific activities. Results: By the end of the rehabilitation, the patient achieved full ROM and muscle strength (scoring 5/5 on the Medical Research Council scale for the vastus medialis), along with a pain-free state in both static and dynamic conditions. The integration of telemonitoring devices facilitated detailed monitoring and feedback, enabling personalized adjustments to the rehabilitation protocol. Key milestones included a return to swimming and cycling in Phase 2, reintroduction of running in Phase 3, and a full resumption of triathlon training by week 12. Conclusions: Despite the positive results, the study highlights the need for further research to validate these findings across larger cohorts and establish standardized telerehabilitation protocols for athletes. This case underscores the potential of digital health technologies in enhancing recovery trajectories for high-demand athletes post-meniscus surgery, paving the way for supervised, accelerated, and effective sports reintegration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Osseointegration (OI) surgery of the appendicular skeleton for repair in amputees is a treatment in which a metal implant is directly fixed to the residual bone and subsequently connected to a prosthetic limb via a transcutaneous connector through a small incision in the skin. Current treatment does not consider nutritional advice for patients undergoing the OI procedure. However, since the group of patients is very heterogeneous, the results may not be always satisfactory for patients and clinicians. Furthermore, in some individuals, incorrect nutrition and diet habits may lead to complications and rejection of the implant. METHODS We created an extensive narrative evaluation by conducting a methodical search. A comprehensive search was conducted across three major databases: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. The search was carried out in October 2024 with no time limit specified. The approach involved using specific, pre-defined search terms, which were first applied in PubMed, followed by Embase and Scopus to ensure a broad and diverse range of articles was captured. The search process was refined by considering studies published in high-impact journals, as identified based on impact factors and subject relevance. To ensure consistency and rigor, the selection criteria were applied uniformly across all databases, and irrelevant or incomplete articles were excluded. RESULTS Based on the specific nature of the OI procedure, it is crucial to adapt patients' diets and nutrition after the process. To translate the findings from the reviewed literature into practical clinical guidance for osseointegration (OI) procedures, we developed dietary recommendations for both patients and clinicians, presented as proposed dietary plans and summarized in tables. These recommendations were informed by evidence from various studies, highlighting findings that were supported by randomized controlled trials (RCTs) as well as areas where the evidence remains inconclusive or unsupported by RCTs. Major vitamins and micro- and macroelements were distinguished and presented as guidelines for clinicians. CONCLUSIONS OI is currently the most promising therapeutic options for amputees. To promote efficient tissue healing and provide energy for rehabilitation, it is recommended to follow a healthy, well-balanced diet that contains all the essential micronutrients, macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals. We also provide suggestions for future studies.

Abstract
Background Whey protein's biochemical properties make it an ideal nutritional supplement for patients with cancer, especially in perioperative care. Thus, the present study aims to assess the efficacy of whey protein supplementation (WPS) compared to standard care in enhancing postoperative outcomes for patients undergoing comprehensive surgical staging for gynecological cancer. Methods In an open-label, randomized controlled trial conducted at Rajavithi Hospital between November 28, 2023 and July 8, 2024, 61 patients scheduled for comprehensive surgical staging were enrolled. Participants were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to either the WPS group (n = 30) or the control group (n = 31). The WPS group received isolated whey protein powder (20 g of protein per serving), administered at 6 pm before surgery and 6 am on the first postoperative day. The control group received standard postoperative care. The primary endpoint was the length of hospital stay (LOHS), with secondary outcomes including gastrointestinal function recovery, postoperative analgesic use, complications, and potential WPS-related adverse events such as transaminitis, acute kidney injury, and electrolyte imbalances. Results The WPS group had a significantly shorter LOHS than the control group (79.0 ± 6.7 vs. 93.3 ± 28.4 h, P = 0.021). Additionally, the WPS group demonstrated significant improvements in gastrointestinal function, with shorter times to first flatus (P < 0.001), first defecation (P = 0.013), and first ambulation (P = 0.043). No significant differences were observed between the groups regarding postoperative analgesic use or complications, including fever, nausea/vomiting, wound infection, and readmission (P > 0.05). Furthermore, no WPS-related adverse events were reported. Conclusion The use of WPS in the perioperative operative management of gynecological cancer surgery yields promising results by significantly reducing the LOHS and accelerating the recovery of gastrointestinal function while maintaining a favorable safety profile.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis from the Inception Cohort of the Swiss Spinal Cord Injury Study (SwiSCI). OBJECTIVES To describe five lifestyle components in newly injured individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), explore co-occurrence of these components, and identify associated personal and clinical factors. SETTINGS Initial rehabilitation stay following traumatic and non-traumatic SCI. METHODS Lifestyle components including overweight/obesity, low diet score, physical inactivity, smoking, and alcohol consumption were used independently and to calculate a composite lifestyle score. Analyses were conducted using descriptive statistics, co-occurrence analysis, and multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS We included 251 individuals, of whom 77.7% were male, 73.7% suffered from traumatic SCI, and 59.8% had paraplegia. The median age was 51 years (IQR 36-64). Approximately twelve weeks after the injury, more than two-thirds of the study population met the criteria for overweight/obesity, and consumed insufficient amounts of fruits and vegetables, and excessive amounts of meat. Alcohol was consumed by 85.3% of individuals, and 26.8% were current smokers. Almost all study participants met the physical activity guidelines (90 min of moderate to strenuous activity physical activity per week). One-quarter of study participants experienced the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity, low diet score and alcohol consumption. Female sex, younger age and higher education were associated with healthier lifestyle components. CONCLUSION Despite methodological limitations, this study underscores the complexities of healthy lifestyle adherence among individuals newly injured with SCI. It highlights the necessity of improving and implementing screening strategies throughout the continuum of SCI care as early as possible following the trauma.

Abstract
Background: Despite the well-documented benefits of exercise and sports participation, young athletes are particularly vulnerable to musculoskeletal injuries. This is especially true during periods of rapid growth, sports specialisation, and high training loads. While injuries are an inevitable aspect of sports participation, the risk can be minimised by promoting the development of strong, resilient tissues through proper nutrition and injury prevention strategies. Moreover, targeted nutrition strategies can accelerate recovery and rehabilitation, allowing for a quicker return to sports participation. Methods: This narrative review synthesises scientific evidence with practical insights to offer comprehensive dietary recommendations aimed at strengthening tissues and supporting the healing process during recovery and rehabilitation. The selection of all sources cited and synthesised in this narrative review were agreed upon by contributing author consensus, experts in sports nutrition (R.A., H.V., B.D.) and exercise and sports medicine (M.H.). Results: Key topics include factors that contribute to injury susceptibility, general dietary recommendations for growth and development, sports nutrition guidelines, and nutrition considerations during injury and rehabilitation. This review also addresses external factors that may lead to suboptimal nutrition, such as food literacy and eating disorders. Conclusions: By highlighting these factors, this article aims to equip coaches, nutritionists, dietitians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, parents/guardians, sporting organisations, and schools with essential knowledge to implement effective nutritional strategies for injury prevention, recovery, and rehabilitation, ultimately enhancing long-term health and athletic performance.

Abstract
Evidence is growing that the individual adjustment of energy targets guided by indirect calorimetry (IC) can improve outcome. With the development of a new generation of devices that are easier to use and rapid, it appears important to share knowledge and expertise that may be used to individualize nutrition care. Despite the focus of this tutorial being on one contemporary device, the principles of IC apply across existing devices and can assist tailoring the nutrition prescription and in assessing response to nutrition therapy. The present tutorial addresses its clinical application in intubated mechanically ventilated and spontaneously breathing adult patients (canopy), i.e. it covers the range from critical illness to outpatients. The cases that are presented show how the measured energy expenditure (mEE), and the respiratory quotient (RQ), i.e. the ratio of expired CO2 to consumed O2, should be applied in different cases, to adapt and individualize nutrition prescription, as it is a good marker of over- or underfeeding at the different stages of disease. The RQ also informs about the patient's body's capacity to use different substrates: the variations of RQ indicating the metabolic changes revealing insufficient or excessive feeding. The different cases reflect the use of a new generation device as a metabolic monitor that should be combined with other clinical observations and laboratory biomarkers. The tutorial also points to some shortcomings of the method, proposing alternatives.

Abstract
This study examines the dynamic relationships between cultural values, training intensity, nutrition, self-efficacy, and coaching quality on Chinese athletes' performance. Bandura's social cognitive theory and cultural psychology ideas enlightened the multi-faceted sports performance analysis. A detailed questionnaire was employed to obtain data from 880 athletes from various places and sports backgrounds. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used for empirical analysis. The results show a significant positive association between coaching quality (β = 0.62, p < 0.001), athlete well-being (β = 0.48, p < 0.001), training intensity (β = 0.55, p < 0.001), nutrition (β = 0.42, p < 0.001), self-efficacy (β = 0.57, p < 0.001), and sports performance. Coaching quality appeared as a critical component. Athletes performed better when they felt their instructors were performing better. Diet, training intensity, and health affected athletes' performance, highlighting the necessity for athlete development. Athletes' confidence in their performance is mediated by coaching, well-being, training, nutrition, and performance. These correlations were further impacted by cultural values, highlighting the need to consider cultural context while attempting to enhance athlete performance outcomes. The study concludes that cultural values, self-efficacy, training, nutrition, coaching, and health are crucial to Chinese athletes' success.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With advancements in burn treatment and intensive care leading to decreased mortality rates, a growing cohort of burn survivors is emerging. These individuals may be susceptible to frailty, characterized by reduced physiological reserve and increased vulnerability to stressors commonly associated with aging, which significantly complicates their recovery process. To date, no study has investigated burns as a potential risk factor for frailty. This study aimed to determine the short-term prevalence of frailty among burn survivors' months after injury and compare it with that of the general population. METHODS A post hoc analysis was conducted on the Randomized Trial of Enteral Glutamine to Minimize the Effects of Burn Injury (RE-ENERGIZE) trial, an international randomized-controlled trial involving 1200 burn injury patients with partial- or full-thickness burns. Participants who did not complete the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire were excluded. Data for the general population were obtained from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). Frailty was assessed using the FRAIL (Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illness, Loss of weight) scale. Due to lack of data on loss of weight, for the purposes of this study, malnutrition was used as the fifth variable. Illness and malnutrition were based on admission data, while fatigue, resistance, and ambulation were determined from post-discharge responses to the SF-36. The burn cohort and general population groups were matched using propensity score matching and compared in terms of frailty status. Within the burn group, patients were divided into different subgroups based on their frailty status, and the differences in their (instrumental) activities of daily living (iADL and ADL) were compared. A multivariable analysis was performed within the burn cohort to identify factors predisposing to frailty as well as compromised iADL and ADL. RESULTS Out of the 1200 burn patients involved in the study, 600 completed the required questionnaires [follow-up time: (5.5 ± 2.3) months] and were matched to 1200 adults from the general population in the U.S. In comparison to the general population, burn patients exhibited a significantly higher likelihood of being pre-frail (42.3% vs. 19.8%, P < 0.0001), or frail (13.0% vs. 1.0%, P < 0.0001). When focusing on specific components, burn patients were more prone to experiencing fatigue (25.8% vs. 13.5%, P < 0.0001), limited resistance (34.0% vs. 2.7%, P < 0.0001), and restricted ambulation (41.8% vs. 3.8%, P < 0.0001). Conversely, the incidence rate of illness was observed to be higher in the general population (1.2% vs. 2.8%, P = 0.03), while no significant difference was detected regarding malnutrition (2.3% vs. 2.6%, P = 0.75). Furthermore, in comparison with robust burn patients, it was significantly more likely for pre-frail and frail patients to disclose compromise in ADL and iADL. The frail cohort reported the most pronounced limitation. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest a higher incidence of post-discharge frailty among burn survivors in the short-term following injury. Burn survivors experience compromised fatigue, resistance, and ambulation, while rates of illness and malnutrition were lower or unchanged, respectively. These results underscore the critical need for early identification of frailty after a burn injury, with timely and comprehensive involvement of a multidisciplinary team including burn and pain specialists, community physicians, physiotherapists, nutritionists, and social workers. This collaborative effort can ensure holistic care to address and mitigate frailty in this patient population.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of protein and/or essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation in all lower limb surgeries using systematic reviews and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We included RCTs that assessed the efficacy of protein and/or EAA supplementation in lower limb surgeries. On June 2, 2023, we searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, and ClinicalTrials.gov. The primary outcomes were mobility, patient-reported outcomes (PRO), and acute kidney injury (AKI). The secondary outcomes were exercise capacity, muscle strength, muscle mass, and all adverse events. We performed meta-analyses using the random-effects model. We assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and the certainty of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach. We included 12 RCTs (622 patients). These studies included four on hip fracture surgery, three on total hip arthroplasty, and five on total knee arthroplasty. Protein and/or EAA supplementation may slightly improve PRO (standard mean difference 0.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.22 to 0.80, low certainty of evidence). Nevertheless, it may not improve mobility (mean difference 0.07 m/s, 95% CI: -0.01 to 0.16, low certainty of evidence). No adverse events including AKI were reported. Muscle strength may have increased (standard mean difference 0.31, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.61, very low certainty of evidence). However, exercise capacity (mean difference 5.43 m, 95% CI: -35.59 to 46.45, very low certainty of evidence) and muscle mass (standard mean difference -0.08, 95% CI: -0.49 to 0.33, very low certainty of evidence) were not improved. While protein and/or EAA supplementation in lower limb surgeries may improve PRO, it is unlikely to affect mobility. Despite this, the medical team and patients might still consider protein and/or EAA supplementation a useful option.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess injured military veterans' experiences, beliefs, and daily physical and psychosocial functioning in relation to food and nutrition. DESIGN We used a convergent mixed-methods study design and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health to operationalize the core constructs and influencing factors related to physical and psychosocial functioning, food, and nutrition. SETTING Three Veterans Affairs polytrauma rehabilitation centers. PARTICIPANTS Veterans who served in the United States military on or after September 11, 2001, and whose medical diagnoses met the criteria for polytrauma; at least 1 mild traumatic brain injury and at least 1 associated comorbidity (eg, posttraumatic stress disorder, chronic musculoskeletal pain, vestibular disturbances), for a total N of 43. INTERVENTIONS None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Themes from survey responses and semistructured interview data were pooled into core constructs and influencing factors. RESULTS Thirty-seven veterans completed all surveys and participated in recorded interviews. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, veterans' relation to food and nutrition (ie, nutritional functioning) was found to be characterized by 5 core constructs, including food background, nutrition knowledge, meal aptitude, resource navigation, and navigation to/of food spaces. Nutritional functioning was found to be shaped by 5 influencing factors, including injuries and health conditions, ideological and cultural exposures, relations, current beliefs, and current behaviors. CONCLUSIONS Nutritional functioning (food background, nutrition knowledge, meal aptitude, resource navigation, navigation to/of food spaces) among injured veterans is complex and shaped by multiple physical, psychosocial, economic, and cultural factors.

Abstract
Under optimal physiological conditions, muscle mass maintenance is ensured by dietary protein, which balances the amino acid loss during the post-absorption period and preserves the body's protein homeostasis. Conversely, in critical clinical conditions (acute, subacute or postacute), particularly those related to hypomobility or immobility, combined with malnutrition, and local/systemic inflammation, the loss of muscle mass and strength can be quantitatively significant. A decline of more than 1% in muscle mass and of more than 3% in muscle strength has been registered in subjects with aged 20-37 yr after just five days of bed rest, similarly to those observed during one year of age-related decline in individuals over the age of 50. Loss of muscle mass and strength can have a dramatic effect on subjects' functional capacities, on their systemic metabolic control and on the amino acid reserve function, all of which are fundamental for the maintenance of other organs' and tissues' cell processes. References available indicate that the average 1%-2% reduction per day of muscle mass in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) could represent an independent predictor of hospital mortality and physical disability in the five years following hospitalization. After just a few days or weeks of administration, supplementation with EAAs and glutamine has shown significant effects in maintaining muscle size and strength, which are typically negatively affected by some acute/subacute or postacute critical conditions (muscle recovery after surgery, oncology patients, ICU treatments), especially in the elderly or in those with pre-existing degenerative diseases. In this review, we focused on the theoretical bases and the most relevant clinical studies of EAA and glutamine supplementation as a single compound, with the aim of clarifying whether their combined use in a blend (EAAs-glutamine) could be potentially synergistic to prevent disease-related muscle wasting and its impact on the duration and quality of patients' clinical course.

Abstract
The fire service suffers from high rates of cardiovascular disease and poor overall health, and firefighters often suffer fatal and non-fatal injuries while on the job. Most fatal injuries result from sudden cardiac death, while non-fatal injuries are to the musculoskeletal system. Previous works suggest a mechanistic link between several health and performance variables and injury risk. In addition, studies have suggested physical activity and nutrition can improve overall health and occupational performance. This review offers practical applications for exercise via feasible training modalities as well as nutritional recommendations that can positively impact performance on the job. Time-efficient training modalities like high-intensity interval training and feasible modalities such as resistance training offer numerous benefits for firefighters. Also, modifying and supplementing the diet and can be advantageous for health and body composition in the fire service. Firefighters have various schedules, making it difficult for planned exercise and eating while on shift. The practical training and nutritional aspects discussed in this review can be implemented on-shift to improve the overall health and performance in firefighters.

Abstract
This study investigated trends within a custom Sports Nutrition Assessment for Consultation (SNAC) survey designed to identify nutrition-related risk factors among post-operative lower-extremity youth athletes. Athletes aged 8-18 years who completed the SNAC at a sports medicine institution after lower-extremity surgery were reviewed for associations between SNAC questions and age/sex differences. Of 477 patients (15.0 ± 2.0 years; 47.8% female), 319 (66.9%) answered 'yes' to at least one question and were identified for a consult, though 216 (64.3%) declined. The most frequent questions to prompt a consult were a desire to better understand nutrition for recovery (41.5%) and regularly skipping at least one meal a day (29.8%). Inter-question responses were often significantly related, especially regarding appetite changes, weight changes, and/or meal-skipping. While consult acceptance was not significantly different between sex/age, males were more likely to report a desire to better understand nutrition (p = 0.004) and a weight change (p = 0.019), and females were more likely to report struggling with dizziness/fatigue (p < 0.001). Additionally, older athletes reported an appetite change (p = 0.022), meal-skipping (p = 0.002), a desire to better understand nutrition (p < 0.001), a weight change (p < 0.001), and an effort/recommendation to change their body composition/weight (p = 0.005). These findings demonstrate a link between risky nutrition behaviors and physical detriments.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate adiposity after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR): i) cross-sectionally (1-year post-ACLR) compared to uninjured controls; ii) longitudinally up to 5 years post-ACLR; and iii) associations with patient-reported symptoms and physical performance. Methods In 107 individuals post-ACLR and 19 controls, we assessed global (BMI), peripheral (subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness on the posteromedial side of knee MRI), and central (waist circumference in ACLR group) adiposity. Patient-reported symptoms (Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score) and physical performance (hop for distance) were evaluated at 1 and 5 years post-ACLR. Linear regression models evaluated adiposity between groups. Paired t-tests evaluated changes in adiposity from 1- to 5 years post-ACLR. Linear regression models analyzed adiposity's associations with patient-reported symptoms and physical performance at 1-year post-ACLR, changes in symptoms and performance over 4 years post-ACLR, and longitudinal changes in adiposity and symptoms and performance, controlling for age, sex, and activity level. Results Individuals 1-year post-ACLR were associated with higher average global (3 kg/m2) and peripheral adiposity (2.3 mm). From 1- to 5 years post-ACLR, higher average global (0.58 kg/m2) and central (5 cm) adiposity, and lower average peripheral adiposity (1.3 mm) were observed. In general, adiposity at one-year post-ACLR was negatively associated with patient-reported symptoms and physical performance, and changes from 1 to 5 years post-ACLR. Increases in adiposity were negatively associated with changes in patient-reported symptoms and physical performance over four years post-ACLR. Conclusion Greater global and central adiposity is a feature of young adults following ACLR and influences current and future patient-reported symptoms and physical performance.

Abstract
Total knee replacement, a common surgery among the elderly primarily necessitated by osteoarthritis, replaces the damaged knee joint with an artificial one. Given the aging population and the increasing prevalence of such surgeries, the article highlights the critical need for effective postoperative care strategies. This editorial provides an overview of rehabilitation care for pain in elderly knee replacement patients, emphasizing the importance of a multimodal approach to postoperative recovery. Furthermore, the article advocates for a patient-centered, comprehensive rehabilitation regimen that enhances recovery and quality of life in elderly patients undergoing knee replacement surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between Body Mass Index (BMI), frailty index (FI), and dietary supplement in cancer survivors has been a subject of growing interest. This study investigates the relationship of BMI and FI with mortality in American cancer survivors and explores the impact of dietary supplement usage on different BMI and FI groups. METHODS Three thousand nine hundred and thirty-two cancer patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database were included in the analyses. BMI, FI, and supplement usage were obtained through the NHANES structured survey and the 49-item FI tool. Weighted logistic and Cox proportional hazards models, Kaplan-Meier survival analyses, and propensity score matching (PSM) were used to elucidate the relationships between BMI, FI, dietary supplement, and mortality outcomes. RESULTS The study found significant associations between higher BMI and increased frailty (Odds ratio [OR] = 1.04, 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.02-1.06). BMI < 25 kg/m2 and FI > 0.2 are associated with an increased mortality rate. Dietary supplement use can reduce all-cause and cancer mortality in cancer patients with BMI < 25 kg/m2 (Hazard ratio [HR] = 0.63, 95% CI, 0.47-0.84; HR = 0.48, 95% CI, 0.29-0.80) or FI ≤ 0.2 (HR = 0.77, 95% CI, 0.60-0.99; HR = 0.59, 95% CI, 0.39-0.89). In cancer patients with BMI < 25 kg/m2 and FI ≤ 0.2, dietary supplement users had lower all-cause and cancer mortality (HR = 0.49, 95% CI, 0.30-0.79; HR = 0.25, 95% CI, 0.10-0.60). CONCLUSION The study revealed a negative correlation between BMI and the FI among the cancer patient cohort as well as their complex impact on mortality and highlighted the role of dietary supplement in cancer prognosis, indicating benefits for non-frail patients with BMI < 25 kg/m2.

Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests that many athletes fail to adopt optimal nutritional practices, which can impede their potential achievements. In response, this Special Issue seeks to gather research papers that delve into athletes' dietary practices and their potential impacts on body composition and sports performance. Additionally, studies focusing on interventions aimed at optimizing dietary habits are encouraged. This paper outlines the key aspects and points that will be developed in the ensuing articles of this Special Issue.

Abstract
Sport-related concussion incidence has increased in many team-based sports, such as rugby, Gaelic (camogie, hurling, football), and hockey. Concussion disrupts athletes' brain function, causing an "energy crisis" that requires energy and nutrient support to restore function and heal. Performance dietitians and nutritionists play a role in supporting athletes' post-injury nutritional demands. This study aimed to investigate Irish performance dietitians' and nutritionists' knowledge and implementation of nutritional strategies to manage and support athletes' recovery following concussion. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seventeen (n = 17) Irish performance dietitians and nutritionists recruited from the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register and other sporting body networks across Ireland. Participants practised or had practised with amateur and/or professional athletes within the last ten years. All interviews and their transcripts were thematically analysed to extract relevant insights. These data provided valuable insights revealing performance dietitians and nutritionists: (1) their awareness of concussion events and (2) their use of nutritional supports for concussion management. Furthermore, the research highlighted their implementation of 'novel nutritional protocols' specifically designed to support and manage athletes' concussion recovery. There was a clear contrast between participants who had an awareness and knowledge of the importance of nutrition for brain recovery after sport-related concussion(s) and those who did not. Participants presenting with a practical understanding mentioned re-emphasising certain foods and supplements they were already recommending to athletes in the event of a concussion. Performance dietitians and nutritionists were keeping up to date with nutrition research on concussions, but limited evidence has prevented them from implementing protocols in practice. Meanwhile, participants mentioned trialling/recommending nutritional protocols, such as carbohydrate reloading, reducing omega-6 intake, and acutely supplementing creatine, omega-3 fish oils high in Docosahexaenoic acid, and probiotics to support brain healing. Performance dietitians' and nutritionists' use of nutrition protocols with athletes following concussion was linked to their knowledge and the limited scientific evidence available. Nutrition implementation, therefore, may be overlooked or implemented with uncertainty, which could negatively affect athletes' recovery following sports-related concussions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical and rehabilitation effectiveness of the protein module (Fresubin Protein) in therapeutic nutrition in patients with severe combined injury (polytrauma) at the rehabilitation stage in a specialized department (neurosurgery). MATERIAL AND METHODS We examined 43 victims who received a combined injury that required treatment in the intensive care unit with subsequent transfer to a specialized department (neurosurgery). At the stage of treatment and rehabilitation in the specialized department, we assessed the biochemical parameters of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, body composition, as well as energy metabolism using indirect calorimetry, and the functional state of the gastrointestinal tract. In the comparison group, patients received a standard diet at the rate of 30 kcal/kg BW. The main group received a standard diet (30 kcal/kg BW) with the addition of a protein module (0.8 g/kg BW) to the diet as an additional source of protein. RESULTS In both observation groups, moderate to severe protein-energy malnutrition was diagnosed before the study (decreased total protein level - 50.63±1.3 g/l, albumin - 27.97±0.95 g/l, transferrin - 1.33±0.9 g/l). Anthropometric parameters (BMI=17.1±1.2 kg/m2, BMD=20.15±1.5 cm, OP=22.2±1.1 cm, TKFST=8.4±0.5 cm) indicated a deficiency of the somatic protein pool, lean and fat body mass. No pronounced disorders of carbohydrate and fat metabolism were noted. A correlation was found between the dynamics of protein metabolism and the inflammatory process parameters (CRP, white blood cell count, r=-0.79, p=0.001). Against the background of nutritional support with the inclusion of a protein module in the diet, by the 21st day, patients of the main group showed a reliable (p<0.05) normalization of protein metabolism parameters, an increase in lean body mass. CONCLUSION The results of the studies indicate that in victims with severe combined trauma, upon admission to the treatment and rehabilitation stage in a specialized department, despite the intensive care provided in the intensive care unit, moderate to severe protein-energy malnutrition with severe protein metabolism disorders is diagnosed. This is manifested by a decrease in the concentration of total protein, albumin, transferrin, and somatic protein pool. Low lean mass values indicate a deficiency of the protein component of nutritional support, a decrease in lean and muscle mass. The consequence of which is a limitation of the volume of rehabilitation, an increased risk of complications. The identified protein deficiency dictates the need to increase the protein component of therapeutic nutrition. Inclusion of a protein module in the therapeutic nutrition program at the rate of 0.8 g/kg of body weight ensures adequate correction of protein metabolism disorders, overall nutritional status in severe combined injury and creates the prerequisites for increasing the effectiveness of rehabilitation measures.

➤ Malnutrition is common among subsets of patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery and is associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications.➤ Serum proteins, in particular, albumin, may be used in the evaluation of nutritional status.➤ Anthropometric measurements and surveys also play a role in the evaluation of nutritional status.➤ Increased energy and nutrient requirements due to surgical procedures necessitate increased caloric and protein intake in the perioperative period, which may be achieved through diet or supplementation.➤ Evidence supports the use of protein-calorie, amino acid, and immunonutrition supplements. Vitamin D supplementation is an area of further consideration.➤ Diet restriction, activity alterations, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric surgery are all safe, effective approaches to weight loss, although the optimal timing and magnitude of preoperative weight loss require further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The combination of exercise therapy combined with nutritional supplementation (Nutr) is widely used for frail or sarcopenic older persons. However, the effects of Nutr in elderly patients after fast-track total hip arthroplasty (THA) are unknown. This study examined the effects of perioperative Nutr on muscle strength, functional performance, and quality of life (QOL) in frail elderly women after fast-track THA. METHODS A total of 58 frail elderly women aged 65-80 years scheduled for unilateral primary THA were randomly allocated to two groups: the physical exercise (Ex) combined with Nutr (Ex + Nutr; n = 29) group, and the Ex alone (Ex; n = 29) group. Protein and vitamin D supplements were provided daily from 4 weeks preoperatively to 8 weeks postoperatively (12 weeks) to the patients in the Ex + Nutr group, whereas the Ex group did not receive any supplements. Surgery and postoperative rehabilitation programmes during intervention were identical in both groups. Hip abductor and knee extensor muscle strength, functional performance (Timed Up & Go test, Harris Hip Score), and QOL (Japanese Orthopaedic Association Hip Disease Evaluation Questionnaire) were assessed at baseline and at 12 weeks (8 weeks postoperatively). RESULTS After the intervention, hip abductor muscle strength on the contralateral leg and knee extensor muscle strength on both sides significantly improved in the Ex + Nutr group compared to the Ex group (p = 0.03, 0.01, and 0.01, respectively). However, hip abductor muscle strength on the operated side did not differ significantly between the groups (p = 0.23). There were no significant differences in functional performance and QOL. CONCLUSION Ex + Nutr does not have an additional effect on the improvement of hip abductor strength, functional performance, and QOL compared to Ex alone after fast-track THA. However, significant improvements were observed in the strength of some muscles after fast-track THA. TRIAL REGISTRATION UMIN 000042964. Abstract
The intricate interplay between eating disorders, malnutrition, and their cutaneous manifestations is the focal point of this comprehensive review. The review delves into the clinical significance of recognising and understanding these visible signs in the context of eating disorders. It highlights the vital role of nutrition in maintaining healthy skin and addresses the challenges associated with relying solely on cutaneous signs for diagnosis. Emphasising a multidisciplinary approach involving dermatologists, psychiatrists, and nutritionists, the review underscores the holistic nature of the treatment. Addressing psychological aspects alongside nutritional rehabilitation is underscored with a forward-looking perspective on future research avenues. This review is valuable for healthcare professionals by synthesising existing knowledge and identifying research gaps. It aims to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and preventative strategies for individuals dealing with the complex challenges of eating disorders and malnutrition.

Abstract
Long COVID (LC) syndrome is a complex multiorgan symptom that persists beyond >12 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The most frequently associated symptom is fatigue. Physical activity and exercise are recommended, although specific studies are lacking. The objectives of the present work are to analyze the impact of a supervised exercise program on the clinical evolution of LC with fatigue patients and to identify whether certain circulating biomarkers could predict the response to rehabilitation. The rehabilitation treatment response was analyzed in 14 women diagnosed with LC and fatigue, based on the changes in the 6 min walk test and Borg/Fatigue Impact scales. Patients who showed improvement in the meters walked were considered "responders" to the therapy. A total of 65% of patients responded to the exercise program, with an improvement in the meters walked and in oxygen saturation, with stability in the percentage of meters walked. Participants with obesity and those double-vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2 presented a lower degree of fatigue. LC patients presented a favorable response to a supervised exercise program. Differences in creatinine and protein levels were observed between rehabilitation therapy "responders" and "nonresponders". A good state of protein nutrition was related to a better rehabilitation response. The results are promising regarding possible predictive biomarkers of rehabilitation response, such as creatinine.

Abstract
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and prehabilitation programs are multidisciplinary care pathways to reduce stress response and improve perioperative outcomes, which also include nutritional interventions. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of protein supplementation with 20 mg per day before surgery in a prehabilitation program in postoperative serum albumin, prealbumin, and total proteins in endometrial cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery. METHODS A prospective study including patients who underwent laparoscopy for endometrial cancer was conducted. Three groups were identified according to ERAS and prehabilitation implementation (preERAS, ERAS, and Prehab). The primary outcome was levels of serum albumin, prealbumin, and total protein 24-48 h after surgery. RESULTS A total of 185 patients were included: 57 in the preERAS group, 60 in the ERAS group, and 68 in the Prehab group. There were no basal differences in serum albumin, prealbumin, or total protein between the three groups. After surgery, regardless of the nutritional intervention, the decrease in the values was also similar. Moreover, values in the Prehab group just before surgery were lower than the initial ones, despite the protein supplementation. CONCLUSIONS Supplementation with 20 mg of protein per day does not impact serum protein levels in a prehabilitation program. Supplementations with higher quantities should be studied.

Abstract
It is estimated that three to five million sports injuries occur worldwide each year. The highest incidence is reported during competition periods with mainly affectation of the musculoskeletal tissue. For appropriate nutritional management and correct use of nutritional supplements, it is important to individualize based on clinical effects and know the adaptive response during the rehabilitation phase after a sports injury in athletes. Therefore, the aim of this PRISMA in Exercise, Rehabilitation, Sport Medicine and Sports Science PERSiST-based systematic integrative review was to perform an update on nutritional strategies during the rehabilitation phase of musculoskeletal injuries in elite athletes. After searching the following databases: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, PEDro, and Google Scholar, a total of 18 studies met the inclusion criteria (Price Index: 66.6%). The risk of bias assessment for randomized controlled trials was performed using the RoB 2.0 tool while review articles were evaluated using the AMSTAR 2.0 items. Based on the main findings of the selected studies, nutritional strategies that benefit the rehabilitation process in injured athletes include balanced energy intake, and a high-protein and carbohydrate-rich diet. Supportive supervision should be provided to avoid low energy availability. The potential of supplementation with collagen, creatine monohydrate, omega-3 (fish oils), and vitamin D requires further research although the effects are quite promising. It is worth noting the lack of clinical research in injured athletes and the higher number of reviews in the last 10 years. After analyzing the current quantitative and non-quantitative evidence, we encourage researchers to conduct further clinical research studies evaluating doses of the discussed nutrients during the rehabilitation process to confirm findings, but also follow international guidelines at the time to review scientific literature.

Abstract
When mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) occurs following an impact on the head or body, the brain is disrupted leading to a series of metabolic events that may alter the brain's ability to function and repair itself. These changes may place increased nutritional demands on the body. Little is known on whether nutritional interventions are safe for patients to implement post mTBI and whether they may improve recovery outcomes. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic review to determine what nutritional interventions have been prescribed to humans diagnosed with mTBI during its acute period (<14 days) to support, facilitate, and result in measured recovery outcomes. Methods Databases CINAHL, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception until January 6, 2021; 4,848 studies were identified. After removing duplicates and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, this systematic review included 11 full papers. Results Patients that consumed enough food to meet calorie and macronutrient (protein) needs specific to their injury severity and sex within 96 h post mTBI had a reduced length of stay in hospital. In addition, patients receiving nutrients and non-nutrient support within 24-96 h post mTBI had positive recovery outcomes. These interventions included omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA), vitamin D, mineral magnesium oxide, amino acid derivative N-acetyl cysteine, hyperosmolar sodium lactate, and nootropic cerebrolysin demonstrated positive recovery outcomes, such as symptom resolution, improved cognitive function, and replenished nutrient deficiencies (vitamin D) for patients post mTBI. Conclusion Our findings suggest that nutrition plays a positive role during acute mTBI recovery. Following mTBI, patient needs are unique, and this review presents the potential for certain nutritional therapies to support the brain in recovery, specifically omega-3 fatty acids. However, due to the heterogenicity nature of the studies available at present, it is not possible to make definitive recommendations. Abstract
Inflammatory immune response plays a key role in exercise-induced injury and healing; however, the relevant regulatory mechanisms of immune infiltration in exercise-induced injuries remain less studied. In the present study, a highly efficient system for screening immunity-related biomarkers and immunomodulatory ability of natural nutritional supplements was developed by integrating intelligent data acquisition, data mining, network pharmacology, and computer-assisted target fishing. The findings demonstrated that resting natural killer cells showed a higher rate of infiltration after exercise, whereas naive B cells and activated dendritic cells showed higher rate of infiltration before exercise. Four key genes, namely PRF1, GZMB, CCL4, and FASLG, were associated with exercise-induced injuries and inflammatory immune response. In total, 26 natural compounds including echinacoside, eugenol, tocopherol, and casuariin were predicted by using the HERB databases. Molecular docking analysis showed that GZMB, FASLG, and CCL4 bound to echinacoside. In vivo experiments in mice showed that after 30 min swimming, natural killer (NK) cells showed high infiltration rates, and the key genes (GZMB, PRF1, FASLG, and CCL4) were highly expressed; however, echinocandin significantly reduced the level of NK cells and decreased the expression of the four key genes post exercise. This natural nutritional supplement may act to protect against inflammatory injury after exercise by suppressing specific immune infiltration.

Abstract
Efforts to provide nutrition support to para-athletes have not been established to date, and are far behind those established for athletes without disabilities. In the present study, we attempted to clarify the actual situation regarding dietary challenges of para-athletes. The aim of this study was to obtain clues to effective intervention methods that encourage the practice of sports nutrition. Six active elite para-athletes (30–70 years, four males) and a female physical therapist without physical disability participated in semi-structured interviews. All para-athletes had lower-limb disabilities and participated in the international wheelchair sports competitions (tennis, softball, and table tennis, with 2–26 years of player history). The interview items were on the ideal diet for improving competitive performance, evaluation of their typical diets, and the role of the dietitian as support. Responses obtained from participants were analyzed using quantitative content analysis by language analysis software. There are differences in the ideal diet based on the characteristics of the sport, but most participants believed that a nutritionally well-balanced diet with abundant vegetables was ideal for improving competitive performance. Para-athletes who use a wheelchair daily pay attention to their total calorie intake, because gaining weight is a critical issue for operating their wheelchairs and transferring themselves to and from their wheelchairs. Despite their world-class competition levels, none of them received routine dietary advice from dietitians. Some para-athletes did not even feel the need to engage with dietitians. Even for these para-athletes at a high level of competition, the “ideal diet” they considered was not always the optimal diet for improving their competitive performance. In addition, there are various barriers to practicing their optimal diet due to disability characteristics. Dietitians need to understand these barriers, their concerns and conflicts, and how to help them plan the optimal diet to improve their performance and maintain overall health.

Abstract
A team of experts on the effects of the spaceflight environment on the brain and eye (SANS: Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome) was convened by NASA and ESA to (1) review spaceflight-associated structural and functional changes of the human brain and eye, and any interactions between the two; and (2) identify critical future research directions in this area to help characterize the risk and identify possible countermeasures and strategies to mitigate the spaceflight-induced brain and eye alterations. The experts identified 14 critical future research directions that would substantially advance our knowledge of the effects of spending prolonged periods of time in the spaceflight environment on SANS, as well as brain structure and function. They used a paired comparison approach to rank the relative importance of these 14 recommendations, which are discussed in detail in the main report and are summarized briefly below.

Abstract
By combining virtual reality, the digital twin system has been deeply applied in many places. Especially with the upsurge of national sports and more attention to sports, people have also begun a more in-depth study on the strategy of sports training. This paper aims to explore the application of the Brazilian jujitsu training strategy and interactive control method in the new era. Based on the sports skills of Brazilian jujitsu, combined with digital twin technology and wireless sensor network technology, this paper develops a sports training system based on Brazilian jujitsu. It can collect the action information of the trainer and twin it into the simulation system so as to carry out better and more effective confrontation training. The experimental results show that the average delay time is 5.2 ms and the maximum delay time is 6.5 ms, which is less than the limit delay time of 20 ms. Compared with the control group, it achieved quite good results. It shows the effectiveness of the system designed in this paper for trick jujitsu training.

Abstract
Nutritional disorders diminish the effectiveness of physical therapy. The pathogenesis of nutritional disorders, such as sarcopenia, frailty, and cachexia, differs from disease to disease. Disease-specific nutrition can maximize the function, activity, participation, and quality of life for patients undergoing physical therapy, a practice known as nutritional physical therapy. Understanding and practicing disease-specific nutritional physical therapy is essential to meet patients' diverse needs and goals with any disease. Thus, the physical therapist division of the Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Nutrition, with advice from the Japanese Society of Nutrition and Swallowing Physical Therapy, developed this review. It discusses the impact of disease-specific nutritional physical therapy on sarcopenia and frailty in community-dwelling older adults, obesity and metabolic syndrome, critical illness, musculoskeletal diseases, stroke, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, renal disease, cancer, and sports.

Abstract
Sports participation is not without risk, and most athletes incur at least one injury throughout their careers. Combat sports are popular all around the world, and about one-third of their injuries result in more than 7 days of absence from competition or training. The most frequently injured body regions are the head and neck, followed by the upper and lower limbs, while the most common tissue types injured are superficial tissues and skin, followed by ligaments and joint capsules. Nutrition has significant implications for injury prevention and enhancement of the recovery process due to its effect on the overall physical and psychological well-being of the athlete and improving tissue healing. In particular, amino acid and protein intake, antioxidants, creatine, and omega-3 are given special attention due to their therapeutic roles in preventing muscle loss and anabolic resistance as well as promoting injury healing. The purpose of this review is to present the roles of various nutritional strategies in reducing the risk of injury and improving the treatment and rehabilitation process in combat sports. In this respect, nutritional considerations for muscle, joint, and bone injuries as well as sports-related concussions are presented. The injury risk associated with rapid weight loss is also discussed. Finally, preoperative nutrition and nutritional considerations for returning to a sport after rehabilitation are addressed.

Abstract
Nutritional status is a strong predictor of postoperative outcomes and is recognized as an important component of surgical recovery programs. Adequate nutritional consumption is essential for addressing the surgical stress response and mitigating the loss of muscle mass, strength, and functionality. Especially in older patients, inadequate protein can lead to significant muscle atrophy, leading to a loss of independence and increased mortality risk. Current nutritional recommendations for surgery primarily focus on screening and prevention of malnutrition, pre-surgical fasting protocols, and combating post-surgical insulin resistance, while recommendations regarding macronutrient composition and timing around surgery are less established. The goal of this review is to highlight oral nutrition strategies that can be implemented leading up to and following major surgery to minimize atrophy and the resultant loss of functionality. The role of carbohydrate and especially protein/essential amino acids in combating the surgical stress cascade and supporting recovery are discussed. Practical considerations for nutrient timing to maximize oral nutritional intake, especially during the immediate pre- and post- surgical periods, are also be discussed.

Abstract
Regular physical exercise and a healthy diet are major determinants of a healthy lifespan. Although aging is associated with declining endurance performance and muscle function, these components can favorably be modified by regular physical activity and especially by exercise training at all ages in both sexes. In addition, age-related changes in body composition and metabolism, which affect even highly trained masters athletes, can in part be compensated for by higher exercise metabolic efficiency in active individuals. Accordingly, masters athletes are often considered as a role model for healthy aging and their physical capacities are an impressive example of what is possible in aging individuals. In the present review, we first discuss physiological changes, performance and trainability of older athletes with a focus on sex differences. Second, we describe the most important hormonal alterations occurring during aging pertaining regulation of appetite, glucose homeostasis and energy expenditure and the modulatory role of exercise training. The third part highlights nutritional aspects that may support health and physical performance for older athletes. Key nutrition-related concerns include the need for adequate energy and protein intake for preventing low bone and muscle mass and a higher demand for specific nutrients (e.g., vitamin D and probiotics) that may reduce the infection burden in masters athletes. Fourth, we present important research findings on the association between exercise, nutrition and the microbiota, which represents a rapidly developing field in sports nutrition.
