Bilateral intraosseous lipoma of the maxillary tuberosity: A challenging entity

Lipomas can occur anywhere in the body where fat cells are present; however, intraosseous lipomas are rare. Although solitary lesions have already been reported in the gnathic bones, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of bilateral intraosseous lipoma. A 62-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a swelling on both maxillary tuberosities. The radiographic examination showed a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque image with ill-defined borders on the right side of the maxilla, and an ill-defined radiolucency on the left side. Histologically, both sides revealed numerous mature adipocytes surrounded by immature bone and dystrophic calcification. The patient remains under follow-up and free of disease for 8 months. Due to the rarity of the intraosseous lipomas in the jaws, a literature review of the published cases was performed jointly with this unique case report.

Intraosseous Lipoma Mimicking Periapical Lesion: A Rare Presentation

Lipoma is one of the benign soft-tissue tumors in the adipose tissue. Oral lipomas comprise 1%-5% of benign oral tumors. They are slow-growing, soft, asymptomatic, solitary tumors. In this case report, a 45-year-old female patient having swelling on the upper right arch for 2 months has been reported. Clinically, the right upper second premolar and first molar were grossly carious, with diffuse swelling on the adjacent vestibule. A provisional diagnosis of the periapical abscess was rendered. Radiological evaluation and routine blood tests were performed. After the tissue was obtained, following teeth extraction and socket curettage, it was sent for histopathological evaluation, and findings suggested intraoral intraosseous lipoma. Clinically, they are asymptomatic, and therefore, if it was not curetted and histopathologic evaluation not done, and only thought to be just a swelling or a periapical abscess, proper treatment could not have been established. This paper will surely bring out the importance of histopathology in routine dentistry and the role of histopathological evaluation of periapical soft tissues.

Fibrolipoma of the Buccal Mucosa in a Geriatric Patient

Lipoma is the most common mesenchymal tumor seen in the trunk and extremities. It is rarely found in the mouth. Clinically, it resembles other lesions and is not considered in the initial diagnosis. Histopathological evaluation is needed for accurate diagnosis. Surgical excision is the main treatment modality. Histologically, many variants are described of which fibrolipoma is thought to have some recurrence. This article describes a case of fibrolipoma of the buccal mucosa in a geriatric patient.

Clinicoradiographic Features and Histopathologic Variations of Intraosseous Lipoma: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature

Intraosseous lipoma is a very rare lesion, and the jaw is its least common bone location. Fibrolipoma is a microscopic variant of lipoma which is characterized by a significant fibrous component intermixed with lobules of fat cells. Intraosseous fibrolipoma of the jaw is a rare lesion, and to the best of our knowledge, only two cases have been reported from 1948 in English literature. This paper presents a 39-year-old man with a chief complaint of tooth displacement in the anterior region of the mandible. Radiographic evaluation revealed a unilocular radiolucent lesion with sclerotic borders located between the left lateral incisor and canine. Histopathologic evaluation after an excisional biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of intraosseous fibrolipoma. We also reviewed the literature on this rare lesion.

Intraoral Lipoma of the Cheek - A Case Report With a One-Year Follow-up and Review of Literature

Lipomas are mesenchymal adipose tumors that are most common in the human body. However, they are rare in the oral cavity at an occurrence rate of 1% to 4% with male gender predilection. The case presented is of a 37-year-old male who presented with a large painless swelling on the right cheek region. The swelling was present for the past year and had aggravated in the previous one month, causing discomfort during mastication and speech. On clinical examination, a solitary non-fluctuating circumferential swelling on the right cheek was observed. A provisional diagnosis of lipoma was made based on the history and clinical examination, and it was decided to treat by surgical excision. A final diagnosis of lipoma was made based on histopathological analysis of the excised specimen. The patient at a one-week follow-up had recovered from his speech and chewing problems, and no recurrence was reported at a one-year follow-up.

Oral lipoma: Case report and review of literature

Lipoma is a benign neoplasm that primarily affects the middle-aged individuals and has a rare oral cavity occurrence. Given its noninvasive behavior and low recurrence rate, surgical conservative management should be regarded as the best therapeutic option. This paper highlights two patients along with their improved conditions following the treatment.

Intraosseous lipoma of the maxillary tuberosity: A case report

Intraosseous lipoma appears less frequently in the maxilla than in the mandible. The initial phase of tumor development is characterized by asymptomatic growth, followed by the presence of pain and paresthesia in the later stage. We report the case of a 43-year-old female patient who contacted a doctor because of periodic pains and stupor in the left side of the upper jaw. The exostosis-like formation was found by palpation, subsequently raising suspicion of an odontogenic tumor on the basis of panoramic imaging (dental orthopan). The intraosseous lipoma was histopathologically diagnosed after surgical procedure and standardized treatment of removed tumefaction. Clinical features and x-ray findings of the intraosseous lipoma within the maxillary region are generally blurred. Surgery is the recommended treatment, and histopathology analysis is of utmost importance for the final diagnosis.

Intraosseous spindle cell lipoma of the mandible: case report

We describe what is to our knowledge the first reported intraosseous spindle cell lipoma of the mandible. It is the first spindle cell lipoma we have seen that shows dental resorption, and the largest that we have seen published (60×30×20mm).

Lipoma is a benign tumour originating from mature adipose tissue. It can occur in any place in the body where adipose tissue is located. Intraosseous lipoma is a very rare bone tumour. The authors present an infrequent case involving intraosseous lipoma of the mandible in a 32-year old man and provide a review of case studies documented earlier in the literature.

Condylar intramedullary intraosseous lipoma: Contribution of a new case and review of the literature

Background

Lipoma is the most common benign tumour of the human body, being intraosseous involvement very rare. Just 1 to 4% of all cases of lipoma are located in the oral cavity, only 0.1% being intraosseous. The jaw is its most uncommon bone location. Etiology of intraosseous lipoma (IOL) is unknown, although several theories have been proposed. Usually asymptomatic, the symptoms, when present, will depend on its location and size. Its origin may be intraosseous or juxtacortical. A biopsy is essential for diagnosis, and definitive treatment involves resection or curettage of the lesion. The aim of this paper is to present a new case of intramedullary intraosseous lipoma of the mandible with involvement of the left mandibular ramus and condylar neck.

Material and Methods

A case of intramedullary intraosseous lipoma (IOL) on the left mandibular ramus and condyle is presented. No history of trauma in temporomandibular joint existed. The radiology showed a radiolucent multi-lobulated lesion with values of attenuation in the range of fat. Curettage is performed and the histopathology showed a conglomerate of adipocytes without trabeculae, calcifications or atypia.

Results

According to the bibliography 24 cases of mandibular IOL have been described. This is the second reported case of condylar involvement and the first with cortical expansion.

Conclusions

Lipoma intraosseous is a very rare benign bone neoplasm. Histology is required for the differential diagnosis from other radiolucent lesions. The IOL treatment is the curettage with a good prognosis, although malignant transformation to liposarcoma has been reported in other locations. It is a disease with a difficult differential diagnosis, therefore the publication of new cases is important.

Most common sites of involvement are the buccal mucosa, tongue and floor of the mouth with typical presentation of an asymptomatic, soft, smooth-surfaced, nodular and yellowish mass. Histopathologically, a classical lipoma resembles normal adipose tissue and it has multiple variants which are less commonly seen except fibrolipoma. The article presents a case report of a relatively large oral classical lipoma in a 60-year-old man on a rare site, mandibular buccal vestibule, along with a review of the literature and special emphasis on its various histopathological variants.

Jacob's disease: Report of a case

PURPOSE

Jacob's disease (JD) is an uncommon disorder that presents as pseudojoint formation between the enlarged mandibular coronoid process and the zygoma, resulting in mouth opening limitation (MOL). Intraosseous lipoma (IOL) usually presents in the long bone, but it is very rare in the mandible. The authors present a rare case of JD and coexisting IOL in the same anatomical area and discuss diagnosis and surgical intervention.

CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION

The patient was a 39-year-old Korean female with MOL. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a large lobulated mass with fat-specific signal intensity. A combined extraoral and intraoral approach was used to resect the large mass. Histopathologic examination revealed a degenerated lipomatous tumor replacing the marrow cavity, with cartilaginous cap formation on the articular surface.

CONCLUSION

Postoperatively, the patient showed uneventful healing and resolution of MOL.

A rare case of intraosseous fibrolipoma of the mandible: diagnosis and treatment

Lipomas are common soft tissue tumors. Intraosseous lipoma is a rare lesion that constitutes not more than 0.1% of bone tumors. It can occur anywhere in the body and there have only been a few cases found in the mandible. Intraosseous fibrolipoma of the jaw is an uncommon histological variant of the classic lipoma and to the best of our knowledge only one case has previously been reported in the literature. The cause of this lesion is uncertain. Clinically the lesion is generally asymptomatic and its radiographic feature is a well-defined radiolucency. Surgery is the treatment of choice. We present a case of an intraosseous fibrolipoma in the right mandibular ramus in a 25-year-old female.
