Prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip/palate syndrome through a hybrid workflow: A case report with 2-year follow-up

AIM

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip/palate (EEC) syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects ectodermal derived structures, including teeth, nails, hair, and sweat glands. Prosthetic rehabilitation of patients with EEC syndrome is essential towards improving their overall quality of life.

METHODS AND RESULTS

In the case shown, a telescopic retained overdenture was made on the lower jaw based on digital impression of a patient with EEC syndrome associated with cleft lip and cleft palate. Due to the congenital anomalies and limited mouth opening, the impression was taken with intraoral scanner, and after designing the telescopes on the digital model, the primary and secondary telescopes were confectioned by selective laser sintering.

CONCLUSION

Combining digital dental technology and conventional clinical prosthetic treatment methods, results in a well-functioning overdenture even in such complicated situations. The prosthodontic rehabilitation of patients with ECC helps to restore the masticatory and phonetic functions, increases the patient's self-esteem, and prevents further psychological trauma caused by hypodontia.

Oral management of children/adolescents with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome: A scoping review

AIMS

EEC is a rare syndrome characterized by the triad of ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and orofacial clefting, along with other clinical manifestations mainly in hair, skin, and teeth. The present paper aimed to perform a scoping review to collect the most relevant studies and focused on the diagnosis and oral management of EEC syndrome in the pediatric dental setting. This review also pretended to make recommendations and map the gaps in this clinical topic.

METHODS

An exhaustive electronic and manual search was conducted in four databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source/EBSCO) according to previously established eligibility criteria, using different combinations of keywords, MeSH terms, and Boolean operators. Titles, abstracts, and full-text articles were screened and selected by precalibrated reviewers. A data charting was also accomplished for summarizing the overview of the evidence.

RESULTS

A total of 37 references were identified, and 32 titles remained after removing duplicates; then, 25 potential full-text articles were carefully reviewed. Finally, 15 relevant and most informative studies were included. Most studies were single clinical case reports. Only one descriptive retrospective study was detected. None randomized clinical trials or comparative observational studies were found. A medical/dental multidisciplinary approach is needed for the management of EEC syndrome.

CONCLUSIONS

Diverse dental specialists must be involved. Pediatric dentists must play a principal role in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases; particularly the preservation of the primary and mixed dentitions, trying to achieve normal orofacial growth.

Ectrodactyly-Ectodermal Dysplasia Clefting Syndrome: A Case Report of Its Dental Management with 2 Years Follow-Up

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia clefting syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the triad of ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia and facial clefting of lip or palate or both along with some systemic manifestations. Although each defect that comprises the syndrome has been known to occur as a separate entity, the congregation of all three anomalies in a single individual appears to be an extremely rare occurrence, with incidence being approximately 1.5/100 million population. Early diagnosis and management of clinical manifestations associated with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia clefting syndrome present a unique challenge. We report a case of this rare disorder in an 11-year-old male patient along with its dental management using a multidisciplinary approach.

Dental management of a child with ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia cleft lip/palate syndrome: A case report

Ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia with clefting is a rare syndrome resulting from TP63 gene mutations. It is inherited in autosomal dominant manner or as a de novo transfiguration. It is characterized by a triad of ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly, and facial clefts. This report represents a clinical case of 5 years and 6 months-old male child with ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia cleft lip and palate syndrome requiring treatment of his carious teeth. After history taking and clinical examination, the necessary treatment was provided under general anesthesia due to the definitely negative behavior of the child. The treatment outcomes had a positive impact on the behavior and acceptance to dental treatment. This was evidenced by completion of the prosthetic and space management appliances on the dental chair. The child's quality of life was consequently improved. This was evidenced by the reduced response scores of the child perception questionnaire (CPQ_11-14 ) after treatment. This report highlighted the value of proper diagnosis and fulfillment of the unmet dental needs for patients with orofacial syndromes to improve their quality of life.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia clefting syndrome (EEC syndrome)

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia- clefting syndrome (also k/a. split hand- split foot malformation <SHFM>/split hand-split foot ectodermal dysplasia- cleft syndrome/ectodermal dysplasia cleft lip/cleft palate syndrome) a rare form of ectodermal dysplasia, is an autosomal dominant disorder inherited as a genetic trait and characterized by a triad of (i) ectrodactyly, (ii) ectodermal dysplasia and, (iii) & facial clefts.

Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with ankylosis of temporomandibular joint and cleft palate: A rare presentation

The ectodermal dysplasias are a heterogenous group of diseases, which have one or more anomalies of the hair, teeth, nails, and sweat glands. Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is the most common type and is usually transmitted as an X-linked recessive trait. It is characterized by classical triad of hypotrichosis, anhidrosis/hypohidrosis, and hypodontia/anodontia. Here, we describe an Indian boy affected with HED and rare features including ankylosis of temporomandibular joint and cleft palate.

Split-hand/feet malformation in three tamilian families and review of the reports from India

Split-hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a rare condition which can be either syndromic or nonsyndromic. We report three unrelated pedigrees, one with autosomal dominant (AD) inheritance and the other two with autosomal recessive (AR) pattern. We also briefly review the published reports from India.
