Reseek-Arrhythmia: Empirical Evaluation of ResNet Architecture for Detection of Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia is a cardiac condition characterized by an irregular heart rhythm that hinders the proper circulation of blood, posing a severe risk to individuals' lives. Globally, arrhythmias are recognized as a significant health concern, accounting for nearly 12 percent of all deaths. As a result, there has been a growing focus on utilizing artificial intelligence for the detection and classification of abnormal heartbeats. In recent years, self-operated heartbeat detection research has gained popularity due to its cost-effectiveness and potential for expediting therapy for individuals at risk of arrhythmias. However, building an efficient automatic heartbeat monitoring approach for arrhythmia identification and classification comes with several significant challenges. These challenges include addressing issues related to data quality, determining the range for heart rate segmentation, managing data imbalance difficulties, handling intra- and inter-patient variations, distinguishing supraventricular irregular heartbeats from regular heartbeats, and ensuring model interpretability. In this study, we propose the Reseek-Arrhythmia model, which leverages deep learning techniques to automatically detect and classify heart arrhythmia diseases. The model combines different convolutional blocks and identity blocks, along with essential components such as convolution layers, batch normalization layers, and activation layers. To train and evaluate the model, we utilized the MIT-BIH and PTB datasets. Remarkably, the proposed model achieves outstanding performance with an accuracy of 99.35% and 93.50% and an acceptable loss of 0.688 and 0.2564, respectively.

The diagnostic value of electrocardiogram-based machine learning in long QT syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Introduction

To perform a meta-analysis to discover the performance of ML algorithms in identifying Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS).

Methods

The searched databases included Cochrane, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PubMed. Our study considered all English-language studies that reported the detection of LQTS using ML algorithms. Quality was assessed using QUADAS-2 and QUADAS-AI tools. The bivariate mixed effects models were used in our study. Based on genotype data for LQTS, we performed a subgroup analysis.

Results

Out of 536 studies, 8 met all inclusion criteria. The pooled area under the receiving operating curve (SAUROC) for detecting LQTS was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.31-1.00); sensitivity was 0.87 (95% CI: 0.83-0.90), and specificity was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.88-0.93). Additionally, diagnostic odd ratio (DOR) was 65 (95% CI: 39-109). The positive likelihood ratio (PLR) was 9.3 (95% CI: 7.0-12.3) and the negative likelihood ratio (NLR) was 0.14 (95% CI: 0.11-0.20), with very low heterogeneity (I²= 16%).

Discussion

We found that machine learning can be used to detect features of rare cardiovascular disease like LQTS, thus increasing our understanding of intelligent interpretation of ECG. To improve ML performance in the classification of LQTS subtypes, further research is required.

CNN-FWS: A Model for the Diagnosis of Normal and Abnormal ECG with Feature Adaptive

(1) Background and objective: Cardiovascular disease is one of the most common causes of death in today’s world. ECG is crucial in the early detection and prevention of cardiovascular disease. In this study, an improved deep learning method is proposed to diagnose abnormal and normal ECG accurately. (2) Methods: This paper proposes a CNN-FWS that combines three convolutional neural networks (CNN) and recursive feature elimination based on feature weights (FW-RFE), which diagnoses abnormal and normal ECG. F1 score and Recall are used to evaluate the performance. (3) Results: A total of 17,259 records were used in this study, which validated the diagnostic performance of CNN-FWS for normal and abnormal ECG signals in 12 leads. The experimental results show that the F1 score of CNN-FWS is 0.902, and the Recall of CNN-FWS is 0.889. (4) Conclusion: CNN-FWS absorbs the advantages of convolutional neural networks (CNN) to obtain three parts of different spatial information and enrich the learned features. CNN-FWS can select the most relevant features while eliminating unrelated and redundant features by FW-RFE, making the residual features more representative and effective. The method is an end-to-end modeling approach that enables an adaptive feature selection process without human intervention.

Arrhythmia detection and classification using ECG and PPG techniques: a review

Electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmograph (PPG) are non-invasive techniques that provide electrical and hemodynamic information of the heart, respectively. This information is advantageous in the diagnosis of various cardiac abnormalities. Arrhythmia is the most common cardiovascular disease, manifested as single or multiple irregular heartbeats. However, due to the continuous manual observation, it becomes troublesome for experts sometimes to identify the paroxysmal nature of arrhythmia correctly. Moreover, due to advancements in technology, there is an inclination towards wearable sensors which monitor such patients continuously. Thus, there is a need for automatic detection techniques for the identification of arrhythmia. In the presented work, ECG and PPG-based state-of-the-art methods have been described, including preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification techniques for the detection of various arrhythmias. Additionally, this review exhibits various wearable sensors used in the literature and public databases available for the evaluation of results. The study also highlights the limitations of the current techniques and pragmatic solutions to improvise the ongoing effort.

Metaheuristic secured transmission in Telecare Medical Information System (TMIS) in the face of post-COVID-19

The outbreak of novel corona virus had led the entire world to make severe changes. A secured healthcare data transmission has been proposed through Telecare Medical Information System (TMIS) based on metaheuristic salp swarm. Patients need proper medical remote treatments in this Post-COVID-19 time from their quarantines. Secured transmission of medical data is a significant challenge of digitally overwhelmed environment. The objective is to impart the patients' data by encryption with confidentiality and integrity. Eavesdroppers can carry sniffing and spoofing in order to deluge the data. In this paper, a novel scheme on metaheuristic salp swarm based intelligence has been sculptured to encrypt electrocardiograms (ECG) for data privacy. Metaheuristic approach has been blended in cryptographic engineering to address the TMIS security issues. Session key has been derived from the weight vector of the fittest salp from the salp population. The exploration and exploitation control the movements of the salps. The proposed technique baffles the eavesdroppers by the key strength and other robustness factors. The results, thus obtained, were compared with some existing classical techniques with benchmark results. The proposed MSE and RMSE were 28,967.85, and 81.17 respectively. The time needed to decode 128 bits proposed session key was 8.66 × 1052 years. The proposed cryptographic time was 8.8 s.

Comparative study of T-amplitude features for fitness monitoring using the ePatch® ECG recorder

This study investigates ECG features, focusing on T-wave amplitude, from a wearable ECG device as a potential method for fitness monitoring in exercise rehabilitation. An automatic T-peak detection algorithm is presented that uses local baseline detection to overcome baseline drift without the need for preprocessing, and offers adequate performance on data recorded in noisy environments. The algorithm is applied to 24 hour data recordings from two subject groups with different physical activity histories. Results indicate that, while mean heart rate (HR) differs most significantly between the groups, T-amplitude features could be useful depending on the disparities in fitness level, and require further investigation on an individual basis.
