Effects of training nursing process using the concept map on caring self-efficacy of nursing students in pediatric departments

BACKGROUND

Self-efficacy is task-specific, and Professional self-efficacy has been introduced as a factor affecting providing quality nursing care. This study aimed to determine the effects of training the nursing process using the concept map on the caring self-efficacy of nursing students in pediatric departments.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 82 undergraduate nursing students in the second semester of 2021-2022 with a design of two groups before and after training. The samples were selected by census and divided into two experimental and control groups by simple random allocation. The data collection tool was Nursing Caring Self-Efficacy Scale in pediatric departments. The students of two groups in the pediatrics course were trained in the nursing process for nine sessions in three weeks using the concept map. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential tests (Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, exact Fisher's) using SPSS 23.

RESULTS

The study results showed no statistical difference between the two groups of students regarding demographic information and pre-test scores. The concept map group's post-test score of caring self-efficacy increased significantly compared to the pre-test (P < 0.001). The comparison of the post-test scores in the groups showed that the caring self-efficacy score in the intervention group of students was significantly higher than the control group (P = 0.014).

CONCLUSION

According to the study results, it is suggested instructors use the concept map as a metacognitive intervention has increased the caring self-efficacy of nursing students in pediatric departments, which will lead to more accurate performance of nursing students in the future.

Psychometric properties of the pediatric ward nurses' caring self-efficacy scale: A Turkish validity and reliability study

PURPOSE

To translate the 51-item Pediatric Ward Nurses' Caring Self-Efficacy Scale into Turkish and to test the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the scale in the Turkish population.

DESIGN AND METHODS

The study was conducted with 308 nurses working in the pediatric/pediatric wards of two hospitals in Turkey between September 2021 and January 2022. A Personal Information Form, the Pediatric Ward Nurses' Caring Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Nursing Profession Self-Efficacy Scale (NPSES) were used to determine the care self-efficacy levels of the research sample.

RESULTS

The Cronbach alpha value of the scale, which was adapted to Turkish culture, was 0.982, and the test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.994. Factor loads varied between 0.40 and 0.89. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin sample fit coefficient of the scale was 0.963 and the Barlett sphericity test χ2 value was 15,259.02 (p < 0.001). It was determined to have a six-factor structure in Turkish culture and showed good fit indices for the Turkish scale (GFI = 0.93, CFI = 0.97, TLI = 0.96 and RMSEA = 0.09).

CONCLUSIONS

The Pediatric Ward Nurses' Caring Self-Efficacy Scale was found to be valid and reliable for sensitively detecting changes in the care self-efficacy levels of nurses working in pediatric wards.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

The scale can be used by professionals interested in scientific knowledge about pediatric population.

Pediatric Version of the Nurse Caring Behavior Scale: A Cross-Sectional Study in Pediatric Hemato-Oncology Centers

Background and Purpose: Caring is an essential value in nursing, it's crucial in pediatric hemato-oncology: we tested the Nurse Caring Behavior Scale (NCBS) in this setting. Methods: The NCBS is a 14-item validated psychometric questionnaire: caregivers and nurses adapted versions were used. Descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) were used. Results: The questionnaires were completed by 188 caregivers and 193 nurses. The two data sets were suitable for EFA and fitted with one-solution factor analysis; factor loading showed values >0.40 (>0.60 for caregivers). The mean scores were: 4.5 (range: 1-5) for caregivers and 4.7 (range: 1-5) for nurses. Conclusion: The two validated versions can be used on a wider nurses and caregivers sample and provide an instrument for the development of nursing protocols based on caring.

The validity and reliability of Turkish version of the self-efficacy scale in nursing care of children with epilepsy

PURPOSE

This study was conducted to the Turkish validity and reliability study of the 'Scale of Self-efficacy in Nursing Care of Children with Epilepsy' (SSENCCE).

DESIGN AND METHODS

The construct validity of the scale was evaluated with explanatory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis. The reliability of the scales used in the research was examined with composite reliability and Cronbach's alpha coefficients.

RESULTS

A total of 144 nurses participated in the study. The variance explained in the 12-item scale was 53.6%, and the eigenvalue was found as 6.442. The commonality values of the scale items ranged from 0.304 to 0.712, and the factor loads ranged from 0.552 to 0.844. Cronbach's α of the SSENCCE was calculated as 0.907.

CONCLUSION

The Turkish version of the ESSENCE is a valid, reliable, and appropriate tool for assessing the self-efficacy of nurses providing care for children with epilepsy.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Considering that there is no scale that is used to evaluate the self-efficacy of nurses who provide care for children with epilepsy in Turkey, it is thought that this study will guide future research on the subject and the improvement of the clinical experience of nurses.
