Abstract
Background Hypothyroidism (HT) is the most prevalent endocrine disorder, affecting approximately one in 10 out of 35 adults, with a higher prevalence in females and the elderly. Purpose This systematic review (SR) aimed to discuss the effects of yoga on markers and comorbid conditions of HT. Methods The SR was registered with the PROSPERO (PROSPERO 2022 CRD42022312990). Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane, and EMBASE were searched for the relevant English language interventional studies published from 31 December 1947 to 31 December 2023 by using the keywords 'meditation OR breath regulation OR yoga OR yoga nidra AND hypothyroidism OR hypothyreosis OR underactive thyroid OR low thyroid'. Of the 4078 screened studies, eight eligible studies (three RCTs, two pilot studies, two pre-post trials, and one case study) with 421 HT patients (392 females and 29 males) and three to six-month yoga interventions were included. Two independent review authors extracted study characteristics and synthesised them descriptively. RCTs and NRSIs were assessed for risk-of-bias (RoB) using Cochrane tools RoB2 and ROBINS-1. Results The findings suggest that yoga effectively improves the thyroid profile, lipid profile, heart rate variability, pulmonary functions, anxiety, depression, and quality of life among HT patients. Conclusion Yoga may be an inexpensive add-on preventive and therapeutic option for HT. The clinical and methodological heterogeneity among the studies did not allow for meta-analysis (MA). Well-designed MAs are warranted by including rigorous RCTs to draw valid conclusions and defined mechanisms regarding the efficacy of yoga practices/interventions on HT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY - a rhythmic cyclic breathing) is known to produce several physiological changes in human body. Earlier it has been reported that SKY improves cardiovascular modulations, namely increase in heart rate variability. OBJECTIVE To observe the synchronization in oscillatory modulations in cardiac autonomic tone and ventilatory exchange during Long Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (LSKY). LSKY is a sequential combination of pranayama in ujjayi breath, bhastrika, and cyclic rhythmic breathing followed by yog-nidra. METHODS Regular LSKY practitioners from the Art of Living community with more than two years of experience participated in the study (n = 22; age 40.09 ± 12.68). The Electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration, oxygen saturation, and concentrations of oxygen and carbon-di-oxide from exhaled air were recorded before and during LSKY. The time domain parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) were calculated from ECG. All parameters were compared and correlated at each stage of LSKY. RESULTS Highly significant reciprocal correlation was found between HRV parameters and respiration rate during LSKY. Both O2 consumption and CO2 production increased significantly during three stages of pranayama and decreased towards the end of cyclic breathing. We also saw increased SPO2 simultaneously. CONCLUSION The autonomic parameters exhibited reciprocal response to respiratory rate and correlated well to the ventilatory parameters. Further during LSKY we observed enhanced synchronization. In conclusion the LSKY has a potential to influence cardiorespiratory parameters for improving the performance of both systems. LSKY - enhances oscillations in HRV that resets the autonomic system, indicative of better cardiac health and prepares body for better metabolic response. Such changes are capable of inducing resilience along with physiological, psychological relaxation and emotional well-being.

Abstract
Introduction Burnout is "Chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed." Professional quality of life (PQL) includes work related experiences of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. Healthcare providers (HCPs) are highly susceptible to burnout and compassion fatigue due to their demanding work, which lowers PQL. Burnout leads to poor care, medical errors, and patient safety across healthcare disciplines. Yoga has been shown to improve resilience, reduce stress, and increase self-compassion and psycho-physiological coherence. This study compared HCPs in a mHealth-aided 12-week yoga-based meditation and breath intervention to waitlist controls for HCP burnout and PQL at a north Indian tertiary care hospital. Methods This was randomized waitlist-controlled trial. Total 98 HCPs (62 males and 36 females) with an average age of 28.26 ± 3.547 years were enrolled consecutively from March 2021 to November 2022. Randomization was done with opaque sealed envelopes numbered in a computer-generated sequence. The experimental group (n = 49) received 12 online weekly yoga sessions and performed daily home practice (6 days a week). The waitlisted control group (n = 49) continued their daily routine. Maslach's burnout inventory (MBI), professional quality of life (PQL) and anthropometric measurements were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks. Results After 12 weeks, the MBI outcomes of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment showed a highly significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.001). PQL outcomes of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary trauma also differed significantly (p < 0.001). Within group analysis showed that MBI and PQL outcomes improved significantly (p < 0.001) for the experimental group after 12 weeks. Conclusion The current study contributes to the existing evidence on the effectiveness of Yoga in managing stress and developing resilience among doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. Integrating yoga into healthcare settings is crucial for addressing the detrimental impact of burnout on decision-making and promoting positive patient outcomes. mHealth technologies have the potential to enhance the user-friendliness of yoga-based interventions by personalizing the practice space and time. Yoga-based interventions and mHealth technologies can effectively address physician burnout, in a simple and implementable manner.

Abstract
Background Stress leads to immune system dysregulation and dyshomeostasis at the gene level. Mind-body practices are known to influence genomic expression, leading to better health and quality of life. Objective To assess the effect of Advanced Meditation Program (AMP) on the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory and antioxidative genes among those already practicing Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY). Methods A total of 97 healthy volunteers participated in the study, distributed into two groups. The Group I SKY practitioners attended a four-day AMP (50 participants with an average age of 38.8 ± 11.9 consisting of 37 females and 13 males); they are first-time participants of the AMP. Group II SKY practitioners, on the other hand, consisted of 47 participants with an average age of 36.4 ± 9.3 with 43 females and four males. At day 0, day 5, and day 90, the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory genes, namely interleukin (IL) 1β, IL6, and the tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and the expression of antioxidative genes, namely superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was observed. The data were analysed in two phases due to the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): (i) pre-COVID-19 and (ii) during COVID-19. Results In the pre-COVID-19 data set, IL1β, IL6, and TNF were found to have decreased in both groups. There is a significant increase in the expression of SOD and catalase in Group I and a decrease in Group II by day 90. During COVID-19, pro-inflammatory genes increased in Group I and had no significant change in Group II. All three antioxidant genes had decreased expression by day 90 in Group I; SOD decreased in Group II. Interpretation and conclusions Reduced expression of pro-inflammatory genes and increase in the expression of antioxidative genes during the pre-COVID-19 time suggest that the practice of SKY and added AMP may enhance antioxidative defense and may reduce the chance of getting diseases related to inflammation in the body.

Abstract
A substantial proportion of people with acute COVID-19 develop post-COVID-19 condition (previously known as long-COVID) characterized by symptoms that persist for months after the initial infection, including neuropsychological sequelae. Post-COVID-19 condition frequency varies greatly according to different studies, with values ranging from 4 to 80% of the COVID-19 patients. Yoga is a psycho-somatic approach that increases physical, mental, emotional and spiritual strength, and connection. Yoga practice enhances innate immunity and mental health, so it can be used as complementary therapy in the COVID-19 treatment, namely the post-COVID-19 condition. In this article, we conducted a literature review on yoga and COVID-19, finding that an intervention comprising asana, pranayama, and meditation may be a strategy of choice for these patients' recovery. However, further studies are needed to show its effectiveness in this, still unknown, context.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the entire world. The SARS-CoV-2 virus is wreaking havoc globally, leading to serious health problems and even death. The purpose of this study is to present the brainwave variability pattern using QEEG after exposure to COVID-19 and to introduce the subject of the Sudarshan Kriya Yoga (SKY)-based breathing technique. QEEG is one of the basic neurological examinations through which we can compare the changes in the nervous system after SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and observe the variation of brainwave frequencies with a breathing technique.

Abstract
Background Regulated breathing facilitates ventilation and reduces breathlessness. However, the effect of Yogic breathing on patients with COVID remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of two breathing protocols, i.e., short breathing technique (SBT) and long duration breathing technique (LBDT). Methods Three groups including COVID-positive patients, COVID-recovered patients, and healthcare workers (HCWs) were included in the study and segregated into Yoga and control groups. SBT was administered to COVID-positive patients. Both SBT and LBDT were administered to COVID-recovered patients and HCWs. A total of 18 biochemical parameters, a 6-min walk test (6MWT), and a 1-min sit-stand test (1MSST) were assessed on 0th, 7th, and 15th days, where biochemical parameters were the primary outcome. Pre-post estimation of neuropsychological parameters (nine questionnaires) and heart rate variability (HRV) were carried out. The paired t-test or Wilcoxon rank test was applied for pre-post comparison and the Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney U test was used for group comparison. Repeated measures test was applied for data recorded at three time points. Results A significant elevation in white blood cell (WBC) count was observed in COVID-positive intervention (p < 0.001) and control groups (p = 0.003), indicating no role of intervention on change in WBC number. WBC count (p = 0.002) and D-dimer (p = 0.002) significantly decreased in the COVID-recovered intervention group. D-dimer was also reduced in HCWs practicing Yogic breathing as compared to controls (p = 0.01). D-dimer was the primary outcome, which remained below 0.50 μg/ml (a cutoff value to define severity) in the COVID-positive yoga group (CYG) and decreased in the COVID-recovered yoga group (RYG) and the HCW yoga group (HYG) after intervention. A 6-min walk test (6MWT) showed an increase in distance covered among the COVID-positive patients (p = 0.01) and HCWs (p = 0.002) after intervention. The high-frequency power (p = 0.01) was found to be reduced in the COVID-positive intervention group. No significant change in neuropsychological parameters was observed. Conclusion Yogic breathing lowered D-dimer, which is helpful in reducing thrombosis and venous thromboembolism in patients with COVID-19 besides lowering the chances of vaccine-induced thrombotic thrombocytopenia in vaccinated individuals. The breathing intervention improved exercise capacity in mild to moderate cases of COVID-19. Further studies can show if such breathing techniques can influence immunity-related genes, as reported recently in a study. We suggest that Yogic breathing may be considered an integrative approach for the management of patients with COVID. Abstract
Background and Purpose About 56% of symptomatic COVID-19 survivors have been found with neuropsychological comorbidities, such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorders (PTSD), and impaired quality of life (QoL). Alongside, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, regenerative, immunomodulatory, cardio-pulmonary health promotive, and psychological benefits of yogic and Ayurvedic intervention are well documented. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the effect of online Yoga (OYI) and Yoga cum Ayurveda intervention (OYAI) on COVID-19-induced depression, anxiety, PTSD, and poor QoL. Method Seventy-two participants (males/females: 33/26) with at least a 3-month back history of symptomatic COVID-19 infection and age (mean ± SD: 32.33 ± 9.9 and 33.04 ± 12.9 for males and females, respectively) were recruited from Patanjali Ayurveda Hospital, Haridwar, India, and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India, before random allocation into an equal-sized control group (CG), Yoga group (YG) and Yoga cum concoction (YCG) group. Split-plot analysis of variance and Kruskal–Wallis tests with Bonferroni adjusted post hoc comparisons were computed for normal and nonnormal data using IBM SPSS (25th Version, SPSS South Asia Private Limited, Bangalore, India). Results Both the treatments—the 30-day OYI and OYAI, significantly improved depression ( P < .002, ES: -0.99 and P < .001, ES: -2.11), anxiety ( P < .001, ES: -1.32 and -1.89), PTSD ( P < .001, ES: -1.8 and -1.83) and QoL related constructs ( P < .001, ES: 0.63 and 0.76; 0.71 and 0.93 for each OYI and OYAI versus general health and physical health; P < .001, ES: 0.65 for OYAI versus psychological health; and P < .003, ES: 0.54 for OYI versus environment) of the participants compared to the controls. Conclusion OYAI may better ameliorate COVID-19-induced psychological comorbidities than OYI with no adverse effects.

Abstract
Einführung: Die meisten COVID-19 Infizierten machen die Infektion im häuslichen Umfeld durch und werden vermutliche Maßnahmen zur Symptomlinderung anwenden, die aus dem Bereich der Selbstverordnung kommen. Von Interesse ist daher, welche Maßnahmen von COVID-19 Infizierten genutzt werden. Methoden: Anonyme Querschnittsanalyse, bei der die eigenen Behandlungsoptionen in Bezug zu acht Hauptsymptomen mit Hilfe von Freitextfeldern erfasst und kategorisiert werden. Einbezogen wurden Datensätze von Yoga-Übenden als spezifische Zielgruppe, die sich in den Zeiträumen der drei dominanten Virus-Varianten infiziert hatten (n=208: 89% Frauen; Altersmittel 49 ± 11). Die Aussagen wurden deskriptiv dargestellt und die Inhalte der Freitextfelder nach inhaltsanalytischen Gesichtspunkten kategorisiert und den jeweiligen Hauptsymptomen einer COVID-19 Infektion zugeordnet. Ergebnisse: In Bezug auf die acht Symptomgruppen ergab sich ein differenziertes Bild der als hilfreich empfundenen Behandlungsoptionen. Die meisten Nennungen hatte die Kategorie Zeit/Ruhe/Schlaf, insbesondere bei Schwäche/Erschöpfung und Rumpf-/Gliederschmerzen, gefolgt von Atemübungen (Pranayama), die insbesondere bei Atemnot/Kurzatmigkeit und Husten zur Anwendung kamen. Yoga-Übungen wurden insbesondere bei Rumpf-/Gliederschmerzen sowie Schwäche/Erschöpfung genutzt. Die konventionelle Schmerzmedikation stand bei Kopfschmerzen sowie Rumpf-/Gliederschmerzen im Vordergrund. Bewegung an der frischen Luft und Spaziergänge zur Regeneration waren relevant bei Schwäche/Erschöpfung, Atemnot/Kurzatmigkeit sowie Husten. Phytotherapeutische Anwendungen waren insbesondere bei Husten bedeutsam. Ätherische Öle und Riechtraining hatten ihren Schwerpunkt bei Geruchs-/Geschmacksstörungen und Husten. Schlussfolgerungen: In Bezug auf das angewendete Spektrum der unterstützenden Therapieoptionen im Sinne des Selbstmanagements wurden einige sehr häufig und differenziert angewendet. Hier könnte man eine subjektiv empfundene "Nützlichkeit" annehmen. In der Literatur lassen sich für einige dieser Optionen auch Hinweise für eine mögliche Wirksamkeit finden, für andere nicht ohne weiteres. Diese unterstützenden Therapieoptionen könnten außerdem eine Möglichkeit sein, um einer abwartenden Hilflosigkeit proaktiv entgegenzuwirken.

Abstract
The need for consultation-liaison psychiatry on COVID-19 wards has substantially increased since the start of the pandemic. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to summarize the characteristics of patients admitted to the post-COVID-19 ward of the American University of Beirut Medical Center who received a psychiatric consultation. We collected relevant sociodemographic and medical data, information about past psychiatric history, psychiatry consultation details, hospital course, and disposition outcome. We also conducted chi-square and binary logistic regression analyses to assess the association between the different variables and disposition outcome. A total of 52 patients (mean age 57.33 years; equal gender distribution) were seen by the psychiatry consult-liaison team. Most had medical comorbidities and 21.2% required intubation. The most prevalent psychiatric diagnoses were delirium (30.8%), major depressive episode (15.4%), and other anxiety disorder (15.4%). Pharmacological management was implemented in 90.4% of cases and mainly included second-generation antipsychotics (36.5%). Non-pharmacological interventions consisted of those related to delirium and therapy for anxiety. Only intubation was significantly associated with disposition outcome (p = 0.004). This study highlights the various psychiatric themes emerging during the acute and post-acute periods of hospitalization for COVID-19. Hospitalized individuals recovering from the infection should be diligently screened and referred to the psychiatry consultation-liaison team to ensure the implementation of appropriate interventions.
