Abstract
INTRODUCTION Resident doctors constitute an important workforce of the Nigerian healthcare system wherein they undergo structured training to become competent specialists in different fields of medicine. The aim of this survey was to audit the surgical residency training process, incorporating both the trainer's and the trainee's perspectives, with a view to improving both residency training and overall patient care. METHODS This was a multicenter descriptive cross-sectional study involving consultant surgeons and surgical trainees in selected tertiary healthcare institutions in Nigeria. A link to an online semi-structured and pretested questionnaire was sent to study participants whose agreement to fill out the questionnaire was taken as implied consent for the study. The perception of respondents on key areas of surgical residency training like the quality of training, skill acquisition, mentorship, supervision, operative exposures, research, funding, didactic sessions, and work schedule was assessed using a Likert scale. Their perceived challenges to training and measures to improve the quality of training were recorded. Data were analysed using version 23 of the SPSS. RESULTS A total of 127 participants (25 trainers and 102 trainees) were recruited with a mean age of 34.8 ± 3.5 y for the trainees and 47.5 ± 6.9 y for the trainers. The majority of both the trainers and trainees (72%, n = 18 and 93%, n = 96, respectively) were dissatisfied with the quality of surgical residency training in Nigeria with the trainers (88%, n = 22) and trainees (97.1%, n = 99) mostly agreeing that surgical training should be standardized across training centres in Nigeria. The trainees and trainers rated mentorship, research, funding, and overall quality of surgical residency training as inadequate, while most of the trainees and trainers rated supervision of trainees as adequate. The trainees predominantly identified poor training facilities as the most important challenge to surgical residency, followed by high clinical workload, while the majority of the trainers identified workplace bullying and high clinical workload as being the predominant factors. The nine-pronged recommendations by both the trainers and trainees to improve surgical training in Nigeria include mentorship program for trainees, funding of surgical residency training, provision of facilities and equipment for training, adequate supervision of trainees by trainers, job description and defined work schedule for trainees, health insurance of patients, overseas training of trainees during the residency program, improved remuneration of trainees, and adequate motivation of trainers. CONCLUSIONS The quality of surgical residency training in Nigeria is perceived as suboptimal by trainees and trainers. Perceived common challenges to surgical residency training include poor training facilities, workplace bullying, and high clinical workload. Adequate funding of surgical residency program, standardized mentorship, and training of trainees with improved remuneration of trainees and motivation of their trainers would enhance the overall quality of surgical residency training in Nigeria.

Abstract
Depression is a widespread condition, which increased during the COVID-19 pandemic among healthcare workers as well. The large workload of the pandemic response also affected Public Health Residents (PHRs) who played an important role in infection prevention and control activities. This work aims to assess depression in Italian PHRs, based on data collected through the PHRASI (Public Health Residents' Anonymous Survey in Italy) study. In 2022, 379 PHRs completed the self-administered questionnaire containing Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to evaluate clinically relevant depressive symptoms (PHQ-9 ≥ 10). Multivariate logistic regression shows that the intention (aOR = 3.925, 95% CI = (2.067-7.452)) and the uncertainty (aOR = 4.949, 95% CI = (1.872-13.086)) of repeating the test to enter another postgraduate school/general practitioner course and the simultaneous attendance of two traineeships (aOR = 1.832, 95% CI = (1.010-3.324)) are positively related with depressive symptoms. Conversely, the willingness to work in the current traineeship place (aOR = 0.456, 95% CI = (0.283-0.734)) emerged as a protective factor. Similar results were obtained considering mild-to-severe (PHQ-9 ≥ 5) depressive symptoms and/or stratifying by sex. The findings, suggesting the protective role of job satisfaction toward depression, might entail future interventions to improve the learning experience and promote work-life balance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Postgraduate Medical Education is 'the constellation of learning activities carried out to enable doctors to develop relevant competencies and deeper knowledge in specific subject areas after completion of basic medical education'. The purpose of this study was to examine the perception of surgical resident doctors of their training in accredited institutions in Nigeria, using the Surgical Theatre Educational Environment Measure (STEEM) inventory. METHODS The study was a cross-sectional observational study that employed the STEEM instrument which was administered online via email to surgical resident doctors in all the surgical residency training institutions in Nigeria accredited by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. The STEEM is a validated 40 item, self-administered questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 23. Cronbach's alpha was calculated for the whole STEEM and the sub-scales for both reliability and internal consistency. RESULTS One hundred and sixty-six respondents filled the questionnaire out of 464 people contacted, giving a respondent rate of 35.7%. There were 156 (94.0%) males and 10 (6.0%) female respondents. One hundred respondents (60.2%) had global STEEM scores less than the benchmark of 120, three (1.8%) with scores of 120 and 63 (38.0%) had scores >120. CONCLUSION The majority of the respondents in our study indicated dissatisfaction with their operational educational environment experience.

Abstract
Background and Aim The deleterious effects of Resident Doctors' (RDs') long duty hours are well documented. Driven by concerns over the physician's well-being and patient safety, the RDs' duty hours in many developed countries have been capped. However, in Nigeria and many African countries, there are no official regulations on work hours of RDs. This study evaluated the work schedule of Nigerian RDs and its impact on their wellbeing and patient safety. Subjects and Methods A national survey of 1105 Nigerian RDs from all specialties in 59 training institutions was conducted. With an electronic questionnaire designed using Google Forms, data on the work activities of RDs were obtained and analyzed using the IBM SPSS software version 24. The associations were compared using Chi-squared test with the level of significance set at < 0.05. Results The mean weekly duty hours (h) of the RDs was 106.5 ± 50.4. Surgical residents worked significantly longer hours than non-surgical residents (122.7 ± 34.2 h vs 100.0 ± 43.9 h; P < 0.001). The modal on-call frequency was two weekday on-calls per week (474, 42.9%) and two weekend on-calls per month (495, 44.8%), with the majority of RDs working continuously for up to 24 hours during weekday on-calls (854, 77.3%) and 48-72 hours during weekend on-calls (568, 51.4%), sleeping for an average of only four hours during these on-calls. The majority of RDs had post-call clinical responsibilities (975, 88.2%) and desired official regulation of duty hours (1,031, 93.3%). Conclusion The duty hours of Nigerian RDs are currently long and unregulated. There is an urgent need to regulate them for patient and physician safety.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to examine how the quality of work-life (QWL) factors influence job satisfaction and tests if organization type moderates this relationship.
Design/methodology/approach
The study adopts a quantitative cross-sectional research design using survey administration among resident doctors used in the Indian health-care sector. Drawing on the person-environment fit theory, leader-member exchange theory and action learning theory, the authors discuss the results.
Findings
Results depicted that in addition to the direct relationship between QWL and job satisfaction, this association is moderated by organization type.
Practical implications
The study provides critical information for health-care managers to prioritize three QWL attributes, namely, meaningful development, supervision, working conditions to enhance job satisfaction among resident doctors.
Originality/value
The study contributes to the limited empirical scholarly research adding a deeper understanding of pertinent factors influencing resident doctor’s QWL-job satisfaction relationship.
