Abstract
BACKGROUND Like any major operation, sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has its reported postoperative complications. Among them are venous thromboembolic complications (VTE) that may predispose to mortality. Despite the proven efficacy of the traditional anticoagulants, such as low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) for VTE management, they have their limitations. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been currently adopted for the management of VTE. We conducted this study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of apixaban against VTE after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in comparison with LMWH. METHODS This was a randomized controlled trial that included 100 adult patients who underwent SG and received LMWH (Group A) or apixaban (Group B) for VTE prophylaxis. We recorded and analyzed the postoperative events up to the 30th day after surgery. RESULTS This study included Group A (n = 50) and Group B (n = 50). No VTE occurred in either group (0%). Postoperative bleeding was encountered in one patient of each group (2%). The follow-up venous Doppler study was unremarkable in the two groups. CONCLUSION Apixaban was shown to be comparable to LMWH for the prevention of VTE after LSG with similar efficacy and safety making it a promising alternative to LMWH in patients undergoing bariatric surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this web-based study is to analyze the attributes of bariatric surgery cases ensuing health implications. Additionally, the study seeks to delve into the factors influencing post-bariatric psychological evaluations and the impact of various bariatric surgeries on weight loss and psycho-social assessment scores for patients who had undergone bariatric surgeries within a specific bariatric surgery center in Egypt between January 2017 and January 2024. METHODS An analytical cross-sectional study recruited 411 adults who had undergone different bariatric procedures by the same surgical team. We collected the data using a validated self-administered questionnaire that included the Body Image Scale (BIS), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the quality-of-life score (QOLS), and the modified General Patient Satisfaction Score after Bariatric Surgeries (GSABS). RESULTS The most commonly performed bariatric surgery was sleeve gastrectomy (SG), accounting for 82.7% of the procedures. The majority of the patients (78%) were female, with a mean age of 35.8. Among the participants, 32.4% reported experiencing complications, and 21.2% of those individuals were still experiencing complications at the time of assessment. The BIS had a mean score of 16.54 ± 6.27, indicating an average body image perception. The RSES yielded a mean score of 20.11 ± 4.63, indicating average self-esteem, while the GSABS had a mean score of 8.08 ± 2.39, indicating an overall average level of patient satisfaction. No statistically significant differences were found between the various types of bariatric surgeries in terms of total body weight loss percentage, excess body weight loss percentage, or the timing of the intervention. However, increased time intervals from surgeries noted a significant reduction in the BIS. CONCLUSION The majority of patients who underwent SG and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgeries exhibited high GSABS scores. SG patients also had high BIS scores. However, all other interventions showed normal GSABS and BIS scores. All types of surgeries resulted in normal RSES and QOLS. Furthermore, the BIS score increases with the intervention's recentness, but it significantly decreases after the second-year post-surgery. Conversely, the older the timing of the intervention, the higher the RSES score after surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Robotic metabolic and bariatric surgery (RMBS) has emerged as an innovative approach in the treatment of severe obesity by combining the ergonomic precision of robotic technology and instrumentation with the established benefits of weight loss surgery. This study employs a bibliometric approach to identify local research trends and worldwide patterns in RMBS. MATERIALS & METHODS The research methodology used "robotic" and "metabolic" or "bariatric surgery" to search Web of Science. Articles that were published prior to December 31st, 2023, were included. The analyses were developed using the Rayyan and Bibliometric, in R Studio. RESULTS 265 articles from 51 different journals were included. Scientific production of RMBS experienced a significant annual growth rate of 21.96% from 2003 to 2023, resulting in an average of 12.6 papers published per year. A high correlation (R2 = 0.94) was found between the year and number of articles. The mean number of citations per document was 13.25. Approximately 90% of the journals were classified as zone 3, according to the Bradford categorization. International collaboration was identified in 10.57% of cases, with the University of California and the University of Illinois being the most common organizations. The countries with the highest number of corresponding authors, in descending order, were the United States of America, China, and Switzerland. CONCLUSION Scientific production in RMBS has experienced sustained growth since the first original publications in 2003. While it has not yet reached the volume, impact, and international collaboration seen in studies related to non-robotic metabolic and bariatric surgery, RBMS holds potential that remains to be explored.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a liver condition that is prevalent worldwide and associated with significant health risks and economic burdens. As it has been linked to insulin resistance (IR), this study aimed to perform a bibliometric analysis and visually represent the scientific literature on IR and NAFLD. AIM To map the research landscape to underscore critical areas of focus, influential studies, and future directions of NAFLD and IR. METHODS This study conducted a bibliometric analysis of the literature on IR and NAFLD indexed in the SciVerse Scopus database from 1999 to 2022. The search strategy used terms from the literature and medical subject headings, focusing on terms related to IR and NAFLD. VOSviewer software was used to visualize research trends, collaborations, and key thematic areas. The analysis examined publication type, annual research output, contributing countries and institutions, funding agencies, journal impact factors, citation patterns, and highly cited references. RESULTS This analysis identified 23124 documents on NAFLD, revealing a significant increase in the number of publications between 1999 and 2022. The search retrieved 715 papers on IR and NAFLD, including 573 (80.14%) articles and 88 (12.31%) reviews. The most productive countries were China (n = 134; 18.74%), the United States (n = 122; 17.06%), Italy (n = 97; 13.57%), and Japan (n = 41; 5.73%). The leading institutions included the Università degli Studi di Torino, Italy (n = 29; 4.06%), and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy (n = 19; 2.66%). The top funding agencies were the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in the United States (n = 48; 6.71%), and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (n = 37; 5.17%). The most active journals in this field were Hepatology (27 publications), the Journal of Hepatology (17 publications), and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (13 publications). The main research hotspots were "therapeutic approaches for IR and NAFLD" and "inflammatory and high-fat diet impacts on NAFLD". CONCLUSION This is the first bibliometric analysis to examine the relationship between IR and NAFLD. In response to the escalating global health challenge of NAFLD, this research highlights an urgent need for a better understanding of this condition and for the development of intervention strategies. Policymakers need to prioritize and address the increasing prevalence of NAFLD.

Abstract
Obesity is a worldwide epidemic, and bariatric surgery has become increasingly popular due to its effectiveness in treating it. Therefore, understanding this area is of paramount importance. This article aims to provide an understanding of the development of the topic related to procedures, content, data, and status. To achieve this objective, a literature review and a bibliometric analysis were conducted. The methods provided insight into the current state and relevant topics over time. In conclusion, the article provided the identification of the transformation of the research field, initially focused only on physical aspects, to a more complex approach, which also incorporates psychological and social aspects and the correlation between obesity, bariatric surgery, and quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the well-described optimal initial clinical response of sleeve gastrectomy (SG) in the treatment of obesity, some patients do not achieve optimal initial clinical response. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has currently shown an association with post-bariatric surgery weight loss. This study aimed to assess the IGF-1 levels in female patients with obesity, the change after surgery, and their association with the metabolic profile and weight loss after surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a prospective study that was conducted on adult female patients who were recruited for SG. The patients underwent clinical and laboratory investigations that included the IGF-1 measurement. At the 1-year follow-up, the same clinical and laboratory measures were repeated. RESULTS This study included 100 female patients. At the 1-year follow-up, there was a statistically significant reduction in body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001), fasting HbA1C levels (p < 0.001), and triglycerides (p < 0.001), as well as a statistically significant increase in HDL (p < 0.001) and IGF-1 (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analysis revealed that, among the patients baseline characteristics, the significant predictors for the percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) were the patients' BMI (p < 0.001) and IGF-1 levels (p < 0.001). The ROC curve showed that an IGF1 cutoff value of ≤ 23 ng/ml detected suboptimal initial clinical response, with a sensitivity of 95.35% and a specificity of 100%. CONCLUSION This study underscores the significant impact of SG on weight loss and metabolic improvements in female patients. Baseline IGF-1 levels emerged as a crucial predictor of optimal initial clinical response.

Abstract
PURPOSE Bariatric surgery is the most successful method for weight loss; however, weight regain may occur in the long term. It depends on eating habits and self-management. The study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis on bariatric surgery and weight gain and to determine the content and trends in the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS The scan was performed using the keywords "bariatric surgery" and "weight gain" in the Web of Science database. The years of publications and citations, the distribution of publications according to journals, research areas, and countries, co-authorship, co-occurrence, and co-citation were analyzed. The VOSviewer program was used for the analysis. Grey literature, books, and book sections were not included. RESULTS A total of 988 articles were included. The results showed that the most published and cited journal was Obesity Surgery, and the most published country was the USA with 313 publications. The most commonly used keywords were "bariatric surgery," "obesity," and "weight regain." Harvard University was the most publishing institution with 50 publications. The most published year was 2022 since 1993 (n:118). CONCLUSION In the study, current publications and research trends related to bariatric surgery and weight gain were analyzed through bibliometric analysis. It was concluded that weight regain after bariatric surgery should be focused on since it adversely affects the life of individuals, reduces the probability of success of surgical treatment, and imposes additional burdens on the healthcare system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) has been the most frequently performed bariatric procedure since 2014, with continually growing popularity. This study aimed to present our 30-day morbidity and mortality following LSG over a period of 11 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS This is a retrospective study that was based on prospectively collected data from patients undergoing LSG by the same surgeon from July 2011 to the end of August 2022. The LSG-associated 30-day morbidity and mortality and the risk factors for 30-day morbidity were assessed. RESULTS This study included 892 patients who underwent LSG over the course of 11 years. Early postoperative adverse events were encountered in 16 patients (1.79%). Overall, twelve patients (1.35%) required blood transfusions, and two patients (0.22%) required ICU admission. The re-operation rate was 0.9% (n = 8) and the mortality rate was 0.22% (n = 2). The patient's BMI, hypertension, and revisional surgery were marginally significant/significant predictors of early postoperative morbidity. The mean EBWL% was 63.8 ± 15.55 at the 6-month follow-up. CONCLUSION This study confirms the previously reported LSG's short-term safety in terms of a low rate of 30-day postoperative morbidity and mortality. Preoperative BMI, hypertension, and revisional surgery are risk factors for 30-day morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bariatric surgery is the most efficient treatment for patients with clinically severe obesity who have failed to obtain satisfactory weight loss through lifestyle modification and medical treatments. This study aimed to present our long-term laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) efficacy in terms of weight loss and obesity-related complications resolution. PATIENTS AND METHODS This is a retrospective study that was based on prospectively collected data from patients undergoing LSG by the same surgeon from July 2011 to the end of August 2022. The LSG-associated short-term (at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year postoperatively) and long-term (at 5 years and 11 years postoperatively) weight loss, and the short-term (6 months postoperatively) and long-term (5 and 11 years postoperatively) rates of obesity-related complications were assessed. RESULTS This study included 892 patients who underwent LSG over 11 years. At the 1-year follow-up, data on 860 patients were available, while at the 5-year and 11-year follow-ups, data on 193 patients and 48 patients, respectively, were available. The mean EBWL% was 84.57 ± 18.41%, 64.22 ± 15.53%, and 66.01 ± 8.66% at the 1-year, 5-year, and 11-year follow-ups, respectively. CONCLUSION This study adds new evidence concerning the short-term efficacy of LSG. The long-term assessment showed relatively sustainable weight loss and obesity-related complications resolution, with a regression of the short-term gains that was still far from the baseline burden.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Little is known about the prevalence of elevated alkaline phosphatase in post-bariatric surgery patients due to under-utilization of this test after surgery. Elevated alkaline phosphatase levels are caused by hepatobiliary disease or bone resorption, which can lead to gallstones and osteoporosis. Early, post-operative measurement of alkaline phosphatase can prevent complications, thus reducing morbidity and overall healthcare costs. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of elevated alkaline phosphatase levels among post-operative bariatric surgery patients. METHODS This was a retrospective study of patients 18 years or older, who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) at a Midwestern Weight Management Clinic between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2020. Alkaline phosphatase levels, weight, body mass index (BMI), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitriol, and calcitonin, vitamin D and multivitamin supplementation were measured at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgery. RESULTS Two hundred thirty patients with mean age of 47 years and BMI of 44.6 were included with 80.9% (n = 186) female. Alkaline phosphatase was elevated relative to baseline for 36.1% of patients (n = 52) at 3 months post-surgery, 42.4% of patients (n = 56) at 6 months, and 43.3% of patients (n = 45) at 12 months (p < 0.001). There were six cases of documented cholelithiasis post-surgery. CONCLUSION A significant proportion of participants experienced elevations in alkaline phosphatase following surgery, indicating that the prevalence of gallbladder pathology and bone resorption may be higher than previously thought. This merits additional investigation into these complications post-operatively to determine prevalence and avoid excess morbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) continues to be one of the most popular bariatric procedures all over the world. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) frequently shows a slight elevation in patients with obesity. The effect of SG on thyroid hormones has been rarely investigated. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to assess the short-term effect of SG on thyroid functions in Egyptian patients with morbid obesity and the potential predictors of the postoperative thyroid functions. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study included patients undergoing SG at kasr al ainy hospitals. The patients underwent preoperative 3-, 6-, and 12-month postoperative analyses of the thyroid functions and other biochemical markers. RESULTS The study included 106 patients who showed significant improvement in thyroid functions at the follow-up assessment. Twelve-month TSH positively correlated with the 12-month measures of LDL and HbA1c. TSH change at 12-month follow-up (TSH) was inversely correlated to 12-month BMI and positively correlated to preoperative TSH and 12-month percentage of total weight loss (TWL%). Univariable linear regression analysis demonstrated that preoperative TSH (p < 0.001), 12-month TWL% (p = 0.042), 12-month HbA1c (p = 0.001), and 12-month LDL (p = 0.049) were significant predictors for the 12-month TSH levels. Multivariable analysis showed that only preoperative TSH levels (p < 0.001) and 12-month HbA1c levels (p = 0.021) could affect the 12-month TSH levels. CONCLUSION The current study supports the evidence of thyroid function improvement after sleeve gastrectomy. This improvement was affected by the amount of weight loss after surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous epidemiological studies have examined the relationship between dietary intake of specific foods or nutrients and the incidence of depression and have noted that nutrition has a significant impact on mental health. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the state of research, the frontiers of research, and development trends in the field of nutrition and depression using bibliometric and visual analysis. METHODS We collected publications on the topic of nutrition and depression from Scopus between 2002 and 2021. Subsequently, we utilized VOSviewer 1.6.18 and Microsoft Excel 2013 to perform bibliometric analysis and visualization. Bibliometric analysis involves retrieving documents from a singular database, such as SciVerse Scopus or Web of Knowledge, and subjecting them to quantitative and qualitative analysis. Notably, gray literature is not considered in bibliometric analysis. RESULTS A total of 2171 publications on nutrition and depression were found between 2002 and 2021, namely 1855 (85.44%) original articles, 190 (8.75%) reviews, 38 (1.75%) letters, and 88 (4.05%) other types of publications. The most productive country was found to be the USA (n = 726; 33.44%), followed by Australia (n = 172; 7.92%), the United Kingdom (n = 158; 7.28%), China (n = 132; 6.08%), and Canada (n = 131; 6.03%). The remaining publications were from other countries (n = 852; 39.25%). According to the citation analysis, the retrieved papers were cited on an average of 26.6 times and had an h-index of 105 with 57,781 citations. The most frequent terms on the map include those related to (a) fatty acid links to depression and brain inflammation, (b) depression and eating disorders, and finally, (c) adherence to the Mediterranean diet and risk of depression. CONCLUSIONS The current study was the first novel bibliometric analysis of nutrition and depression research that used data extracted from Scopus for visualization network mapping. In recent years, the theme "Mediterranean diet adherence and risk of depression" has been identified more frequently, indicating that studies in this field have garnered considerable attention and reflect the most recent scientific advances. Researchers should continue to investigate nutrition and depression, and we believe this study provides significant information for researchers, nutritionists, and clinicians.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) for morbidly obese patients often results in remission of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), but diabetes relapses in some of those patients. The frequency of T2DM relapse in Asians and the factors involved have not been adequately investigated. METHODS The J-SMART study was conducted on 322 Japanese subjects with body mass index (BMI) ≥32 kg/m2 who underwent LSG at 10 accredited centers in Japan between 2011 and 2014. Of these, 82 T2DM subjects with diabetes in complete or partial remission at 1 year after LSG and followed postoperatively for 5 years were included in the subgroup analysis and classified into two groups: diabetes remission-maintained and diabetes relapse. RESULTS The mean age of all included subjects was 49.2 years, median BMI was 41.5 kg/m2, and median HbA1c was 6.7%. Compared with the diabetes remission-maintained group, the diabetes relapse group at 5 years after LSG had significantly higher preoperative HbA1c, number of antidiabetic medications, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level; and lower BMI and homeostasis model assessment-beta cell function (HOMA-β). As many as 83.0% of the subjects were able to achieve HbA1c <7% at 5 years after LSG, but 26.8% of the subjects had diabetes relapse. Preoperative HbA1c significantly contributed to diabetes relapse (odds ratio 1.54, p = 0.049). In addition, the diabetes relapse group tended to have lower percentage total weight loss (%TWL) at 1 year after LSG and higher percentage weight regain (%WR) from postoperative nadir weight, compared with the diabetes remission-maintained group. The hazard ratio for diabetes relapse was 3.14-fold higher in subjects with %TWL ≥20% and %WR ≥25%, and 5.46-fold higher in those with %TWL <20% and %WR ≥25%, compared with %TWL ≥20% and %WR <25%. CONCLUSION While LSG provides a high remission rate for T2DM, relapse is not uncommon. Preoperative HbA1c, poor weight loss, and excess weight regain after LSG contribute to diabetes relapse, suggesting the importance of treatment strategies focusing on these factors.

Abstract
AbstractBackgroundObesity increases the chance of developing insulin resistance. Numerous inflammatory markers have been linked to an increased risk of insulin resistance in obese individuals. Therefore, we performed a bibliometric analysis to determine global research activity and current trends in the field of obesity and insulin resistance.MethodsScopus was used between 2002 and 2021 to retrieve publications related to terms related to obesity and insulin resistance. Data were exported to Microsoft Excel. Additionally, we use VOSviewer software to create visualization maps that describe international collaborations and research hotspots.ResultsWe identified 6626 publications, including 5754 journal articles, 498 review articles, and 109 letters to the editor. The most productive countries were the United States (n = 995, 30.11%), followed by China (n = 650, 9.81%), Italy (n = 412, 6.22%) and Spain (n = 386, 5.83%). Previously to 2012, this field was mainly focused on ‘adipocyte dysfunctions that link obesity with insulin resistance”; and ‘relationship between obesity, insulin resistance, and risk of cardiovascular disease’. ‘Supplements improve insulin sensitivity‘, and ‘obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance’ were found more recently (after 2014), indicating that research in this field has acquired significant interest and emphasis in recent years.ConclusionsThis is the first bibliometric study to focus on publications related to insulin resistance and obesity at the global level. Our reporting of quantifiable knowledge in this field may be useful in providing evidence and direction for future research, clinical practice, and educational initiatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer is a severe public health issue that seriously jeopardizes global health. In individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), cancer is considered an independent risk factor for severe illness and increased mortality. AIM To identify research hotspots and prospects, we used bibliometrics to examine the global production of COVID-19 literature published in the field of oncology. METHODS Data on publication output were identified based on the Scopus database between January 1, 2020, and June 21, 2022. This study used VOSviewer to analyze collaboration networks among countries and assess the terms most often used in the titles and abstracts of retrieved publications to determine research hotspots linked to cancer and COVID-19. The Impact Index Per Article for the top 10 high-cited papers collected from Reference Citation Analysis (RCA) are presented. RESULTS A total of 7015 publications were retrieved from the database. The United States published the greatest number of articles (2025; 28.87%), followed by Italy (964; 13.74%), the United Kingdom (839; 11.96%), and China (538; 7.67%). The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (n = 205, 2.92%) ranked first, followed by the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (n = 176, 2.51%). The European Journal of Cancer (n = 106, 1.51%) ranked first, followed by the Frontiers in Oncology (n = 104, 1.48%), Cancers (n = 102, 1.45%), and Pediatric Blood and Cancer (n = 95; 1.35%). The hot topics were stratified into "cancer care management during the COVID-19 pandemic"; and "COVID-19 vaccines in cancer patients". CONCLUSION This is the first bibliometric analysis to determine the present state and upcoming hot themes related to cancer and COVID-19 and vice versa using VOSviewer during the early stages of the pandemic. The emergence of hot themes related to cancer and COVID-19 may aid researchers in identifying new research areas in this field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insulin resistance is a risk factor for metabolic syndromes and is associated with a wide variety of metabolic illnesses, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. AIM To investigate and map global insulin resistance studies. METHODS A bibliometric methodology was applied to the literature retrieved from the Scopus database and Reference Citation Analysis (https://www.referencecitationanalysis.com) by using a validated search strategy. The study period was limited from 2002 to 2021. Bibliometric indicators and mapping were presented. RESULTS A total of 26808 articles on the topic of insulin resistance were included in the Scopus database. The articles included research articles (n = 21918; 81.76%), review articles (n = 2641; 9.85%), and letters (n = 653; 2.44%). During the study period, 136 countries contributed to the research on insulin resistance. The highest number of articles was from the United States (n = 7360; 27.45%), followed by China (n = 3713; 13.85%), Japan (n = 1730, 6.45%), Italy (n = 1545; 5.54%), and the United Kingdom (n = 1484; 5.54%). The retrieved articles identified two main research themes: "inflammatory mechanisms in the regulation of insulin resistance" and "mechanisms linking obesity to insulin resistance". CONCLUSION Our data show that insulin resistance has steadily gained interest from researchers, as evidenced by the number of citations and yearly publications. Publications have grown significantly in the last decade, while low-income countries with greater burdens continue to produce fewer publications in this field. This approach might assist researchers in choosing new research areas and recognizing research hotspots and frontiers. In the future, perhaps high-quality clinical evidence will be acquired.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile (C. difficile) is still the most common cause of healthcare-associated diarrhoea and is increasing in prevalence as a community-acquired infection. In addition, the emergence of antibiotic resistance in C. difficile can increase the likelihood of the disease developing and/or spreading. AIM To provide an up-to-date picture of the trends in publications related to C. difficile infection, together with specific insights into hot-button issues in this field. METHODS Publications on C. difficile infections in the field of microbiology between 2001 and 2020 were identified from the Scopus database and Reference Citation Analysis. Bibliometric indicators were determined, including the number and type of publications, countries, affiliations, funding agencies, journals and citation patterns. VOSviewer was used to determine research areas and hot-button issues by identifying recurring terms with a high relative occurrence in the title and abstract. RESULTS A total of 8127 documents on 'C. difficile-associated diarrhoea' published between 2001 and 2020 were retrieved from the Scopus database. In the last decade, there has been a significant almost fourfold increase in the number of published papers on this topic. The United States was among the countries (44.11%) with the most publications, and the most involved institution was the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom (2.50%). Three clusters of research were identified and included 'illness spectrum and severity, as well as the signs, symptoms and clinical pathogenesis of C. difficile'; 'laboratory diagnosis and characterization of C. difficile' and 'risk factors for C. difficile infection'. CONCLUSION This study contains the most up-to-date and comprehensive data ever compiled in this field. More international research and cross-institutional collaborations are needed to address more global C. difficile concerns and to benefit from greater sharing of expertise, which will result in higher quality or more effective studies in the future. Promising research avenues in the near future may draw the attention of relevant scientists and funding organizations and open up novel C. difficile infection-based diagnosis and treatment approaches.
