Abstract
PURPOSE Identifying and selecting determinants of health behaviours is an important step in the design of behaviour change interventions. Many colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors experience disease- and treatment-related complaints, which may make it difficult to implement behavioural changes. In this systematic review, we aimed to identify determinants of a healthy lifestyle, i.e. dietary behaviours and physical activity, in CRC survivors who finished treatment. METHODS We searched Web of Science, PubMed and PsychINFO, to retrieve quantitative and qualitative studies on determinants of a healthy lifestyle in CRC survivors who finished treatment. Synonyms of the following search terms were used: 'CRC survivors', 'lifestyle', 'physical activity', 'nutrition' and 'determinant'. The level of evidence for each determinant was classified as 'convincing', 'moderately convincing' or 'unconvincing' based on consistency of findings between studies and quality of studies assessed with the Mixed Methods Appraisal tool. RESULTS Twenty-one studies were retrieved of which twenty were classified as 'high-quality studies' and one as 'low-quality study'. Determinants that were convincingly associated with less healthy lifestyle behaviours were smoking, depression, body image distress/consciousness, experiencing pain, dealing with symptoms and bad health status. A good functional status was convincingly associated with more healthy lifestyle behaviours. Determinants with convincing evidence for an association with less or more healthy lifestyle behaviours were time and other priorities, knowledge, motivation, (false) beliefs, perceived and expected outcomes, skills, social support, social norms and influence, access to facilities and equipment and weather. CONCLUSION Interventions for changing health behaviours in CRC survivors who finished treatment could use these determinants to tailor and personalize the intervention to the target group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have reported that a majority of colorectal cancer patients in China have low levels of physical activity. Early identification of relevant factors is beneficial for formulating physical activity interventions. This study aimed to describe the status of physical activity in colorectal cancer patients and determine psychosocial predictors of low levels of physical activity. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 230 hospitalized patients with colorectal cancer in a tertiary hospital in Hubei Province. The research utilized a self-designed general information questionnaire, International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), and Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) as assessment tools. SPSS 25.0 was used for descriptive statistical analysis, Chi-squared test, Student's t-test, and binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The prevalence of low physical activity among colorectal cancer patients was 52.5%. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that monthly per capita household income of 3000-5000 yuan (OR = 0.274, 95% CI: 0.080-0.942), monthly per capita household income > 5000 yuan (OR = 0.191, 95% CI: 0.037-0.992), duration of diagnosis between 7 and 12 months (OR = 0.132, 95% CI: 0.030-0.587), social support score (OR = 0.802, 95% CI: 0.679-0.947), illness perception score (OR = 1.136, 95% CI: 1.019-1.266), and posttraumatic growth scores (OR = 0.915, 95% CI: 0.847-0.989) were independent predictors of physical activity in colorectal cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS Overall, colorectal cancer patients in China have low levels of physical activity. These findings may provide valuable insights for healthcare professionals to identify individuals with low levels of physical activity and to develop effective intervention strategies. In future clinical practice, healthcare providers can promote physical activity in colorectal cancer patients through interventions aimed at enhancing social interactions, improving proper knowledge and understanding of the disease, and fostering posttraumatic growth.

Abstract
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) and its treatments cause significant acute, chronic, or latent adverse effects, leading to decreased physical function and quality of life. Robust evidence supports the positive effects of physical activity (PA) on various health outcomes in CRC patients. However, there is limited understanding regarding the factors that influence PA engagement, including facilitators, preferences, and barriers in this population. Purpose This scoping review aims to document the breadth and depth of literature concerning the various aspects of PA participation among patients with CRC. We conducted a scoping review of PA among CRC patients. Methods We searched several databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane, from their inception to 25 July 2023. Multiple reviewers were involved in all screening and data abstractions. The search yielded 834 individual citations after removing duplicates. After screening the titles and abstracts, 20 articles underwent full-text review, and 11 were included. Results Our research findings indicate that among CRC patients, the most prevalent facilitators/preferences for PA are understanding its importance and perceiving its benefits, whereas treatment-related effects and lack of time are the most common barriers. Conclusion CRC patients have unique facilitators and barriers concerning PA. Further research and clinical interventions are required to support and encourage this population to participate in and maintain regular PA.

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of physical activity on the quality of life of patients with postsurgical colorectal cancer in Jordan. A total of 108 colorectal cancer patients aged ≥18 years who underwent surgery at the King Hussein Cancer Center participated voluntarily. The exclusion criteria were severe comorbidities, absolute contraindications to physical activity, and concurrent cancers. Data collection involved phone interviews using The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire and the Godin Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire due to coronavirus disease 2019 restrictions. Significant positive differences in the quality of life subcategory "physical score" were observed between active and less active patients, favoring the active group. However, no significant differences were found in the impact of physical roles on quality of life between active and less active patients. Participation in physical activity is associated with enhanced physical function in both active and less active colorectal cancer patients. We recommend the implementation of physical activity programs and clinics at King Hussein Cancer Center. Future experimental studies assessing the impact of tailored physical activity training on quality of life are warranted.

Abstract
PURPOSE The recent trend of Internet-based digital health interventions has driven researchers to implement them to promote physical activity (PA) and improve patients' health outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the effects of Internet-based digital health interventions on PA and quality of life (QoL) in colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors. METHODS We searched for relevant studies investigating the effects of internet-based digital health interventions published until Dec. 2022 in electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and CEPS) according to PRISMA guidelines. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal checklist was used to examine the quality of the included studies. We performed the fixed and random effects model for meta-analysis. RESULTS Among 746 identified studies, eight published between 2018 and 2022 were included. These covered 991 internet-based digital health interventions and 875 controls. After 6 months of internet-based digital health interventions, CRC survivors' performance in PA (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.09-0.38) and QoL (SMD = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.01-0.22) indicators improved significantly. CONCLUSIONS Internet-based digital health improved the PA behaviour and QoL of patients with CRC. Because of differences in intervention outcomes, additional randomized controlled trials are warranted to provide suggestions for clinical practice. Internet-based digital health interventions are promising for promoting PA in CRC survivors.

Abstract
AIM There are many barriers to physical activity among cancer survivors. Survivors treated with neurotoxic chemotherapy may develop chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and experience additional barriers related to sensorimotor and mobility deficits. This study examined physical activity behaviors, including physical activity predictors, among cancer survivors treated with neurotoxic chemotherapies. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 252 participants, 3-24 months after neurotoxic chemotherapy, was undertaken. Physical activity was self-reported (IPAQ). CIPN was self-reported (FACT/GOG-Ntx-13), clinically graded (NCI-CTCAE), and objectively measured using neurological grading scales and neurophysiological techniques (tibial and sural nerve conduction studies). Balance (Swaymeter) and fine motor skills (grooved pegboard) were assessed. Regression models were used to identify clinical, demographic and CIPN predictors of walking and moderate-vigorous physical activity. RESULTS Forty-four percent of participants did not meet recommended physical activity guidelines (≥150 min/week). Sixty-six percent presented with CIPN. Nineteen percent of participants with CIPN reported that symptoms interfered with their ability to be physically active. A lower proportion of survivors aged ≥60, with grade ≥1 CIPN or BMI ≥30, reported meeting physical activity guidelines (all p < .05). Regression models identified older age, higher BMI, and patient-reported CIPN associated with lower walking, while higher BMI and females were associated with lower moderate-vigorous physical activity. Neurologically assessed CIPN did not associate with walking or moderate-vigorous physical activity. CONCLUSION Cancer survivors exposed to neurotoxic chemotherapy have low physical activity levels. Further work should examine the factors causing physical activity limitations in this cohort and designing interventions to improve physical function and quality of life in survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Avoiding inactivity and staying active during cancer therapy have great health effects. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to describe level of daily, leisure, and physical activities before, during, and after radiotherapy and to investigate whether patients who had not restored activity level after radiotherapy differed from patients who had restored activity level regarding different characteristics. METHODS In this descriptive longitudinal study, 196 patients undergoing pelvic-abdominal radiotherapy reported their activity level at baseline, weekly during radiotherapy, and at 1 month after radiotherapy. RESULTS Patients decreased activity level during radiotherapy (P < .001 for all activities): physical activity (34% of patients decreased level), walking (26%), leisure activities (44%), social activities (15%), housework (34%), shopping (28%), and activities in general (28%). Almost half (47%) had not restored activity level after radiotherapy. Patients with colorectal cancer, older than 65 years, who had less education than university, and high capacity in overall daily activities at baseline were more likely than other patients not to restore activity level after radiotherapy. The patients not restoring their activity level after radiotherapy were more likely than others to experience anxious mood (P = .016), depressed mood (P = .003), and poor quality of life (P = .003) after radiotherapy. CONCLUSION Patients' activity level decreased during radiotherapy, and almost half of patients did not restore activity level after radiotherapy. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Given that restored activity level after radiotherapy was less common in certain subgroups and that patients who restored activity level experienced better quality of life and less frequent anxious and depressed mood, cancer nursing professionals should consider supporting these subgroups of patients in performing activities.

Abstract
The theory of planned behavior (TPB) states that behavioral intention is the best predictor of actual behavior change. However, intention explains only a portion of the variance in behavior. Of specific interest is the question of which moderating or mediating variables can be leveraged to aid health promotion interventions utilizing the tenets of behavioral economics (delay discounting and commitment contracts) in the intention–behavior pathway. Impulsivity has been postulated to fill this role and may be applied to multiple behaviors. We aim to determine if impulsivity moderates the association between intention and actual behavior in the TPB, to discover what other variables may moderate or mediate this association, and to apply the findings to future studies in the field of behavioral economics. To this end, a systematic review was conducted using the PubMed, PsychINFO, and Embase online databases. Eligible studies in peer-reviewed journals published prior to November 2021 were selected. Thirty-three studies were included in the final review, examining physical activity, diet, preventive health, mental health, addiction, and medication adherence behaviors. Three main concepts emerged: (1) impulsivity moderates the association between intention and behavior change; (2) self-efficacy moderates the association between intention and behavior change; and (3) planning and self-efficacy contribute to moderated mediation. This review demonstrates a gap in the literature regarding the application of the TPB to the intention–behavior pathway for health behaviors. Future studies in behavioral economics may leverage the variables of impulsivity, self-efficacy, and planning to predict follow-through in this area and to develop targeted change initiatives.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous studies have suggested the benefits of regular exercise in motivating the survivors of cancer; however, most survivors are insufficiently active, showing high rates of nonadherence to physical activity guidelines. Using the I-Change model, this study sought to determine the association of decisional balance and self-efficacy for exercise, planning, and self-leadership with the stages of change in exercise behavior among patients with stomach cancer. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in February 2021 and included 145 patients diagnosed with primary stomach cancer via quota sampling in South Korea. Sociodemographics, comorbidity, decisional balance for exercise, self-efficacy for exercise, planning, self-leadership, and stages of change in exercise behavior were assessed. RESULTS Of the participants, 4% were in the precontemplation stage of exercise behavior, 10% contemplation, 37% preparation, 23% action, and 27% maintenance. The male sex (p = 0.043), higher self-efficacy for resisting relapse (p < 0.0001), higher coping planning (p = 0.029), and higher self-leadership for behavior awareness and volition (p = 0.023) were associated with more readiness for changes in exercise behavior. CONCLUSIONS From the results obtained using the I-Change model, self-efficacy for resisting relapse to previous habits, coping planning, and behavior awareness and volition were associated with more readiness for changes in exercise behavior. These findings may help reduce stomach cancer survivors' nonadherence to physical activity guidelines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing attention is being given to physical activity in colorectal cancer patients. Some studies have explored a few correlates of physical activity separately. A contemporary study based on the Health Promotion Model may systematically broaden the understanding of physical activity in colorectal cancer patients. OBJECTIVE To understand the status of physical activity in Chinese colorectal cancer patients and to explore the correlated factors. METHODS A total of 168 adults with colorectal cancer were recruited at 3 tertiary hospitals in China. Participant data were collected on demographics, physical activity, biological factors, anxiety and depression, benefits/barriers to physical activity, self-efficacy, and social support. SAS 8.2 was used for statistical analysis, including descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, single factor analysis, and multiple stepwise regression analysis. RESULTS Only 25.60% of colorectal cancer survivors reached the requirements of the Colorectal Cancer Survivorship Care Guidelines. Employment states, number of complications, fatigue, body image, depression, perception of benefits/barriers, and self-efficacy were closely correlated with physical activity in Chinese colorectal cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS The physical activity status of patients with colorectal cancer is not optimal. The correlated factors that nurses can take measures to improve are fatigue, body image, depression, perception of benefits/barriers, and self-efficacy, which may improve physical activity in colorectal cancer patients in China. Additional research is needed to determine if improving factors correlated with physical activity will assist with directly increasing physical activity. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Nurses should evaluate physical activity of colorectal cancer patients timely and play an active role in health promotion programs to improve colorectal cancer patients' physical activity.

Abstract
Regular physical activity (PA) can address many of the negative side effects
experienced by individuals following cancer treatment and support the
optimization of physical and psychosocial well-being. However, many survivors of
cancer are not sufficiently active to achieve these health benefits. The purpose
of this study was to describe the development of a physical activity behavior
change (PABC) intervention, MedEx IMPACT (IMprove Physical Activity after Cancer
Treatment), which aims to increase cancer survivors’ PA levels. A review of the
literature and focus groups with survivors of cancer were conducted in order to
generate recommendations to inform the intervention development process. This
process was guided and informed by: (1) the Medical Research Council’s (MRC)
framework for the development, evaluation, and implementation of complex
interventions, (2) the Behaviour Change Wheel (BCW), and (3) the Theoretical
Domains Framework (TDF). Recommendations for strategies to support habitual PA
and adherence to community-based exercise programs, generated by survivors of
cancer who participated in 7 focus groups (n = 41), were synthesized with 13
statements of findings that were generated from 10 studies included within the
review of the literature. Detailed mapping exercises are presented which outline
the link between these sources, the MRC framework, the BCW and TDF, and the
intervention content. MedEx IMPACT is the first PABC intervention for survivors
of cancer to be developed through the application of the MRC framework, BCW, and
TDF. The next phase in this research is to test the acceptability and
effectiveness of MedEx IMPACT.

Abstract
PURPOSE Knowledge about long-term colorectal cancer (CRC) or treatment related health and functioning problems and on its impact on participation of CRC survivors in domestic life and in society is limited. We aimed to explore the nature and impact of cancer (treatment) related participation restrictions on everyday life of long-term CRC survivors, their current satisfaction with participation, and associations of health and functioning problems with participation satisfaction, using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to comprehensively study participation. METHOD Mixed-method study in 2-10 years post-diagnosis stage I-III CRC survivors (n = 151) from the cross-sectional part of the EnCoRe study. Participation restrictions were explored by semi-structured interviews in a subsample reporting participation restrictions (n = 10). Role functioning (SF36-Health Survey), fatigue (Checklist Individual Strength), and peripheral neuropathy symptoms (EORTC QLQ-CIPN20) were assessed in all participants and associations with self-reported participation satisfaction were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS 19% of CRC survivors reported dissatisfaction with participation. Participation restrictions were reported for interpersonal relationships, work/employment, and social/civic life. CRC survivors reporting better physical and emotional role functioning were significantly less likely to be dissatisfied with their participation, whereas survivors reporting higher levels of fatigue or more peripheral neuropathy symptoms were more likely to be dissatisfied with participation. CONCLUSIONS Colorectal cancer (treatment) related health and functioning problems negatively impacts the ability of nearly 1 in 5 long-term CRC survivors to participate in everyday life situations and their satisfaction with participation. Follow-up care needs to be able to identify and address these problems.

Abstract
In recent years, because of improved cancer screening, detection and treatment modalities, a rapid increase in the population of colorectal and other cancer survivors has been observed. The increasing population has justified the requirement of preventive strategies such as lifestyle modifications with regard to obesity, physical activity, diet and smoking. Physical activity may prevent approximately 15% of the colon cancers. Furthermore, several observational studies have demonstrated the efficacy and dose-dependent and anti-cancer effects of exercise on decreasing the mortality and risk of recurrence before and after the colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis. However, the required exercise dose, type and intensity are yet unclear. The results of randomised prospective studies are expected to determine the optimal amount, type and intensity of exercise and formulate the most appropriate exercise plan and guidelines, according to the requirements and comorbidities of the patients. In addition, recent studies have focused on the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying the effect of physical activity on disease outcomes and recurrence rates. This review aimed to investigate the effects of physical activity and the biological basis of these effects in preventing the risk and recurrence of CRC and decreasing the hazards of cancer and cancer treatment.

Abstract
Mortality from colorectal cancer has been declining over the past 20 years due to improvements in screening and treatment. Physical activity improves patient quality of life, slows functional decline, and reduces all-cause mortality. Although some patients may have difficulty participating in physical activity, clinicians should always try to incorporate exercise into a management plan for patients who have survived colorectal cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES To test effects of gain-framed versus loss-framed mailed brochures on increasing physical activity (PA) among colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors.
. DESIGN Randomized trial with repeated measures at baseline, 1 month, and 12 months postintervention.
. SETTING Mail recruitment from tumor registries.
. SAMPLE 148 inactive CRC survivors who had completed primary therapy.
. METHODS PA and constructs from the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) were assessed at baseline, 1 month, and 12 months. Participants were randomized to receive pamphlets describing PA benefits (gain framed) or disadvantages of not being physically active (loss framed). Baseline characteristics were compared using descriptive statistics. Repeated measures linear models were used to test PA changes.
. MAIN RESEARCH VARIABLES Minutes of PA and TPB constructs.
. FINDINGS Significant PA increases were observed in both study arms. Results did not differ by message frame. At one month, about 25% of previously inactive participants increased activity to national recommendations. Those who increased PA compared to those who did not had higher baseline scores on subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and PA intentions.
. CONCLUSIONS Independent of message framing, mailed brochures are highly effective in producing within-subject short- and long-term increases in PA.
. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING CRC survivors may increase short- and long-term levels of PA by receiving inexpensive print brochures.
