Green internet of things and solar energy

The Internet of Things (IoT) stands out as one of the most captivating technologies of the current decade. Its ability to connect people and things anytime and anywhere has led to its rapid expansion and numerous impactful applications that enhance human life. With billions of connected devices and substantial power and infrastructure requirements, the IoT system can pose a threat to the environment. However, the IoT's vast range of resources and capabilities can also be leveraged to assist in environmental conservation in the evolution of technologies due to massive CO2 emissions, climate change, and environmental and health issues. In this study, with the two-way integration of IoT and green practices, two distinct concepts for green IoT are presented. Among green practices, energy solutions play a vital role in greening the IoT. In this study, the energy solutions for the IoT system are divided as reducing energy consumption and using green energy sources. Solutions for reducing IoT energy consumption are studied systematically through a five-layer framework to simplify its modular design and implementation. Then, the use of green energy resources is discussed for all components of the IoT ecosystem. Leveraging IoT to make the environment and other technologies green is the other concept of green IoT. IoT technology plays a crucial role in enhancing both energy management systems and the efficient harvesting of renewable energy sources. Switching to solar energy from fossil fuel energy is one of the most fundamental green practices today. In this study, the mutual relationship between solar energy harvesting and the IoT is addressed specifically. Several promising research directions in the realm of green IoT are also highlighted.

A machine learning based sentient multimedia framework to increase safety at work

In the last few decades, we have witnessed an increasing focus on safety in the workplace. ICT has always played a leading role in this context. One ICT sector that is increasingly important in ensuring safety at work is the Internet of Things and, in particular, the new architectures referring to it, such as SIoT, MIoT and Sentient Multimedia Systems. All these architectures handle huge amounts of data to extract predictive and prescriptive information. For this purpose, they often make use of Machine Learning. In this paper, we propose a framework that uses both Sentient Multimedia Systems and Machine Learning to support safety in the workplace. After the general presentation of the framework, we describe its specialization to a particular case, i.e., fall detection. As for this application scenario, we describe a Machine Learning based wearable device for fall detection that we designed, built and tested. Moreover, we illustrate a safety coordination platform for monitoring the work environment, activating alarms in case of falls, and sending appropriate advices to help workers involved in falls.

Information technologies of 21st century and their impact on the society

Twenty first century has witnessed emergence of some ground breaking information technologies that have revolutionised our way of life. The revolution began late in 20th century with the arrival of internet in 1995, which has given rise to methods, tools and gadgets having astonishing applications in all academic disciplines and business sectors. In this article we shall provide a design of a 'spider robot' which may be used for efficient cleaning of deadly viruses. In addition, we shall examine some of the emerging technologies which are causing remarkable breakthroughs and improvements which were inconceivable earlier. In particular we shall look at the technologies and tools associated with the Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Sensor Networks and Social Media. We shall analyse capabilities and business value of these technologies and tools. As we recognise, most technologies, after completing their commercial journey, are utilised by the business world in physical as well as in the virtual marketing environments. We shall also look at the social impact of some of these technologies and tools.

Internet of Things: Architectures, Protocols, and Applications

The Internet of Things (IoT) is defined as a paradigm in which objects equipped with sensors, actuators, and processors communicate with each other to serve a meaningful purpose. In this paper, we survey state-of-the-art methods, protocols, and applications in this new emerging area. This survey paper proposes a novel taxonomy for IoT technologies, highlights some of the most important technologies, and profiles some applications that have the potential to make a striking difference in human life, especially for the differently abled and the elderly. As compared to similar survey papers in the area, this paper is far more comprehensive in its coverage and exhaustively covers most major technologies spanning from sensors to applications.
