Testing Messages on Facebook to Promote Use of an HPV Educational Web-Intervention

In the US, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine remains underutilized leading to disparities in HPV-related diseases. Latinx have some of the highest rates of cancer caused by HPV. In a previous study, we developed a tailored-messaging based online educational intervention (CHICOS) that was found to increase HPV vaccination intention among Latinx participants. The current research uses Facebook Advertising to test the comparative effectiveness of messages designed using the Extended Parallel Processing Model (EPPM) to promote the use of CHICOS among Latinx young adults and parents of adolescents. We also looked at differences in the effectiveness of messages that highlighted HPV-related cancers, genital warts, or a control condition as well as differences in Spanish vs. English messages. Results found Latinx young adults and parents, were more likely to click on Facebook Advertisements containing messages in Spanish and those that mention cancer risks pertinent to this population compared to those in English or messages that discuss genital warts. Thus, findings suggest that Facebook Advertising has the potential to be a useful tool for motivating information seeking online about HPV vaccination.

Environmental factors affecting mothers' decision-making about the HPV vaccination for their daughters

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to investigate environmental factors influencing mothers' decision-making regarding vaccination of the human papillomavirus (HPV) for their daughters.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional study, with data collected using online surveys from July to September 2018. Participants were 230 mothers of second-year female middle-school students in South Korea. The proportional stratification sampling method was used to reflect the difference in medical level between regions. Independent variables consisted of individual (demographic characteristics, HPV-related characteristics, knowledge, attitude, and subjective norms) and environmental factors (the influence of healthcare providers, school, and community environments) were examined. The potential factors influencing vaccination uptake were determined using hierarchical logistic regression.

RESULTS

The factors influencing mothers' decision-making about the HPV vaccine for their daughters were their attitude toward HPV vaccination (OR = 0.78 p < .001), whether a healthcare provider provided HPV-vaccine-related information (OR = 2.42, p = .030), and presenting positive-framed information (OR = 4.21, p = .020).

CONCLUSIONS

To increase HPV vaccination among the target population, it is necessary to consider environmental factors identified in this study. Healthcare providers should provide accurate information regarding the vaccination. Information emphasizing the vaccination's benefits is particularly important.

Factors Influencing HPV Vaccination Intention in Mothers with Elementary School Daughters

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to identify the impacts of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination-related health belief, attitudes toward HPV vaccination, and subjective norms on HPV vaccination intent targeting mothers of elementary school daughters.

METHODS

The study use a correlative survey design. The subjects of the study were 121 mothers of elementary school daughters located in metropolitan city B. All subjects agreed to participate in the study. The data were collected from September 1 to October 18, 2018, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent t-test, ANOVA with a post hoc Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression.

RESULTS

Attitude toward HPV vaccination, subjective norms, vaccination plans for their children, and mother's vaccination status were significant factors influencing HPV vaccination intention. These factors accounted for 72% of the HPV vaccination intention. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that factors affecting the intention of mothers of elementary school daughters to vaccinate against HPV were HPV vaccination attitudes, subjective norms, vaccination plans for their children, and mother's vaccination status. The biggest influencing factor was HPV vaccination attitudes. Therefore, in order to encourage mothers of elementary school daughters to vaccinate against HPVs, national-level policies should be implemented to create a social atmosphere of positive attitudes toward HPV vaccinations that also emphasizes how easy it is to get vaccinated against HPV. Based on this, mothers of elementary school daughters should be encouraged to have them vaccinated against HPV, thus contributing to improving the HPV vaccination rates of elementary school girls.

Clinical nurses' awareness and caring experiences for patients with cervical cancer: A qualitative study

To determine the degree to which nurses are aware of cervical cancer and to describe nurses' experiences of caring for patients with cervical cancer. To promote quality of nursing care of cervical cancer, we need to explore their perceptions and nursing experience in doing cervical-cancer care. This study was a qualitative descriptive design. Interviews were conducted with 14 registered nurses. The interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and analyzed. Content analysis was performed. Fourteen nurses who had been working at wards and cancer education centers were recruited in this study. Nine key themes emerged from three categories such as nurses' awareness of cervical cancer, awareness of cervical cancer patient and caring experience. Nurses expressed fear of cervical cancer and helplessness in the face of a life-threatening prognosis. Nurses stated that they might have prejudice about cervical cancer, since it is caused by a sexually transmitted disease. They also recalled that patients with cervical cancer were more sensitive and demanding. Our findings provide a comprehensive and in-depth perspective in understanding the experience of caring for cervical cancer patients. Clinical nurses showed complex emotional reactions to cervical cancer, and expressed prejudice against the sex life of cervical-cancer patients. More education is required to ensure that clinical nurses can provide a nurse-led intervention with patients by managing nurses' fear, prejudice, and the care burden.
