Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS To clarify how dietary and lifestyle factors work on diabetes-related cardiovascular disease (CVD), we investigated whether the increased risk of CVD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) could be offset by an increase in diet and/or lifestyle with antioxidant potential. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 7,658 individuals from UK Biobank (UKB) with T2DM but no diagnosed CVD were included in this study. We screened combinations of 16 nutrients and/or 4 lifestyles to calculate the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), dietary OBS (DOBS), and lifestyle OBS (LOBS). Cox proportional hazards (CPH) regression models and mediation statistical models were performed. RESULTS After adjusting for covariates, CPH regression models showed inverse associations between both OBS and LOBS and CVD. The highest tertile of LOBS was significantly associated with a lower risk of CVD compared to the lowest tertile, with hazard ratios and 95% CIs as follows: Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) 0.81 (0.68-0.97), Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) 0.79 (0.67-0.93), Atrial Fibrillation (AF) 0.56 (0.45-0.70) and CVD mortality 0.67(0.51-0.88). Correspondingly, the results of associations between the highest tertile of OBS and risks of CVDs above were ASCVD 0.80 (0.64-0.99), CAD 0.83(0.68-1.01), AF 0.73 (0.57-0.92) and CVD mortality 0.68 (0.50-0.92). No associations between DOBS and CVDs were observed [ASCVD 0.83 (0.66-1.05), CAD 0.86 (0.70-1.05), AF 0.77 (0.60-1.00), and CVD mortality 0.79 (0.57-1.10)]. These results were consistent in stratified analyses. Additionally, we identified a mediating role for C-reactive protein (CRP) and white blood cell count (WBC) in the observed relations, with indirect effect and mediation estimates as follows: CRP - 0.003 6.0% (OBS and CAD), -0.008 17.2%, -0.003 11.7%, and - 0.010 14.5% (OBS/DOBS/LOBS and CVD mortality); WBC - 0.006 14.3%, -0.006 12.6%, -0.006 13.4%, -0.005 23.3% (OBS and CVDs), -0.008 11.8%, -0.008 11.9%, -0.008 11.8%, and - 0.005 5.3% (LOBS and CVDs). CONCLUSION Sustained adherence to diets and lifestyles with high antioxidant potential may significantly reduce the risk of CVD in individuals with T2DM.

Abstract
Emerging evidence indicates an association between blood pressure and inflammation, yet this relationship remains unclear in older adults, despite the elevated prevalence of hypertension. We investigated the association between blood pressure, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and white blood cell (WBC) count in a cohort of 3571 older adults aged 65 and above, and 587 middle-aged participants (55-59 years old). In women aged 65 and above, the relationship between inflammatory markers and blood pressure was consistent, with hs-CRP and WBC emerging as predictors of high blood pressure. For hs-CRP, the adjusted odds ratio (OR) was 1.5 (95% CI, 1.07 to 2.10, P = 0.02), and for WBC, the adjusted OR was 1.41 (95% CI, 1.02 to 1.94, P = 0.04), comparing the highest to the lowest quartiles. In men, only the WBC count was significantly associated with an increased OR for high BP (adjusted OR 1.49, 95% CI, 1.09 to 2.02, P = 0.01) across quartiles. Across the entire study population, in a fully adjusted model, all inflammatory markers were modestly associated with blood pressure levels, while the effect of being over 65 years was the most significant predictor of high blood pressure (OR 1.84, 95% CI, 1.50 to 2.25, P < 0.001). The link between key inflammation markers and blood pressure in older adults varies by sex and biomarker type and may differ from the relationship observed in younger individuals. These relationships are likely to be affected by factors linked to age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether there was an interaction effect between depressive symptoms and inflammation on the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) was unclear. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 3346 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to explore the associations of depressive symptoms or inflammation with CVDs. The attributable proportion of interaction (API), and synergy index (SI) were applied for evaluating the statistical significance of the interaction effect. RESULTS Depressive symptoms were associated with 2.31-fold risk of CVDs [odds ratio (OR) = 2.31, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.47-3.62). The increased risk of CVDs was observed in people with neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) ≥1.88 group (OR = 1.36, 95%CI: 1.01-1.85) and neutrophil/[white blood cell (WBC)-neutrophil] ≥1.35 (OR = 1.52, 95%CI: 1.12-2.07) after adjusting for confounders. The interaction effect of depressive symptoms and high NLR on the risk of CVDs was statistically significant with an OR value of 2.60 (95%CI: 1.43-4.70) compared to low NLR and no depressive symptoms group after adjusting for confounders. The API was 0.66 (95%CI: 0.44-0.89) and SI was 4.23 (95%CI: 2.08-8.59). The interaction effect of depressive symptoms and high neutrophil/(WBC-neutrophil) was associated with the risk of CVDs compared to low neutrophil/(WBC-neutrophil) and no depressive symptoms group (OR = 3.59, 95%CI: 2.00-6.45). The API was 0.78 (95%CI: 0.63-0.93) and SI was 6.75 (95%CI: 3.55-12.82). CONCLUSION There was an interaction effect of depressive symptoms and inflammation on the occurrence of CVDs.
