Imidazoline and Its Derivatives : An Overview

Increasing the Adhesion of Bitumen to the Surface of Mineral Fillers through Modification with a Recycled Polymer and Surfactant Obtained from Oil Refining Waste

The purpose of this study was to optimize the processes of wetting fillers by varying the content of such additives as a surfactant and polymer in bitumen-mineral compositions in order to achieve optimal performance. The cosine of the contact angle was used as a criterion for assessing the adhesion of the bitumen binder to the surface of crushed stone. The effect of the additives' concentration on surface tension and adhesive efficiency in binary and ternary bitumen compositions was studied. The following chemicals were used as additives: the original product AS-1, industrial additive AMDOR-10, and used sealant AG-4I, a product based on polyisobutylene and petroleum oils. AS-1 was obtained from the oil refining waste in the laboratory of M. Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University. The ternary "bitumen-AG-4I-AS-1" composition provided a maximum decrease in the contact angle by 15.96° (gray crushed stone) and by 14.06° (red crushed stone) relative to original bitumen, providing better wettability of the mineral filler particles with the bitumen, and as a result, maximum adhesion between the bitumen and crushed stone. The optimal performance of the bitumen-mineral composition was recorded with the joint presence of additives in the bitumen: AS-1 at a level of 1.0 g/dm3 and AG-4I at a level of 1.0 g/dm3.

Novel Kinetic Resolution of Thiazolo-Benzimidazolines Using MAO Enzymes

The kinetic resolution of racemic 1H,3H-thiazolo[3,4-a]benzimidazoline (TBIM) heterocycles was achieved using E. coli whole cells expressing the MAO-N D11 enzyme. Several cosolvents were screened using TBIM 2a as the substrate. DMF was the best cosolvent, affording the pure enantiomer (+)-2a in 44% yield, 94% ee. The stereochemistry of TBIM was predicted by means of ab initio calculations of optical rotation and circular dichroism spectra. The reaction scope was investigated for 11 substituted (±) TBIM using an optimized protocol. The best yield and % ee were obtained for the nonsubstituted 2a. Among the substituted compounds, the 5-substituted-TBIM showed better % ee than the 4-substituted one. The small electron donor group (Me) led to better % ee than the electron-withdrawing groups (-NO2 and -CO2Et), and the bulky naphthyl group was detrimental for the kinetic resolution. Docking experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to further understand the interactions between MAO-N D11 and the thiazolo-benzimidazoline substrates. For 2a, the MD showed favorable positioning and binding energy for both enantiomers, thus suggesting that this kinetic resolution is influenced not only by the active site but also by the entry tunnel. This work constitutes the first report of the enzymatic kinetic resolution applied to TBIM heterocycles.

Single-Step Sustainable Production of Hydroxy-Functionalized 2-Imidazolines from Carbohydrates

Manufacturing valuable N-containing chemicals from biomass is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, a novel strategy was developed for efficient production of 2-(1-hydroxyethyl)-imidazoline (HI), a high-value and versatile building block for synthesizing a myriad of bioactive targets, directly from carbohydrates under mild reaction conditions. With this strategy, bio-based HI was produced from fructose in one step with as high as 77 C % isolated yield in the presence of ethylenediamine (EDA) and InCl₃ at 130 °C. The synergistic functions of EDA and InCl₃ were identified for the transformation, wherein EDA promoted the scission of C-C bond of fructose backbone via retro-aldol (R-A) reaction and rapidly trapped in-situ formed reactive carbonyl-containing C₃ intermediate for HI formation to avoid undesired side reaction, and InCl₃ facilitated the formation of this C₃ intermediate and the final 1,2-hydrid shift step.

Recent development on COX-2 inhibitors as promising anti-inflammatory agents: The past 10 years

Cyclooxygenases play a vital role in inflammation and are responsible for the production of prostaglandins. Two cyclooxygenases are described, the constitutive cyclooxygenase-1 and the inducible cyclooxygenase-2, for which the target inhibitors are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Prostaglandins are a class of lipid compounds that mediate acute and chronic inflammation. NSAIDs are the most frequent choices for treatment of inflammation. Nevertheless, currently used anti-inflammatory drugs have become associated with a variety of adverse effects which lead to diminished output even market withdrawal. Recently, more studies have been carried out on searching novel selective COX-2 inhibitors with safety profiles. In this review, we highlight the various structural classes of organic and natural scaffolds with efficient COX-2 inhibitory activity reported during 2011–2021. It will be valuable for pharmaceutical scientists to read up on the current chemicals to pave the way for subsequent research.

Imidazoline synthesis: mechanistic investigations show that Fe catalysts promote a new multicomponent redox reaction

Multicomponent reactions are attracting strong interest because they contribute to develop more efficient synthetic chemistry. Understanding their mechanism at the molecular level is thus an important issue to optimize their operation. The development of integrated experimental and theoretical approaches has very recently emerged as most powerful to achieve this goal. In the wake of our recent investigation of amidine synthesis, we used this approach to explore how an Fe-catalyzed aziridination can lead to an imidazoline when run in acetonitrile. We report that the synthesis of imidazoline by combination of styrene, acetonitrile, an iron catalyst and a nitrene precursor occurs along a new kind of multicomponent reaction. The formation of imidazoline results from acetonitrile interception of a benzyl radical styrene aziridination intermediate within Fe coordination sphere, as opposed to classical nucleophilic opening of the aziridine by a Lewis acid. Comparison of this mechanism to that of amidine formation allows a rationalization of the modes of intermediates trapping by acetonitrile according to the oxidation state Fe active species. The molecular understanding of these processes may help to design other multicomponent reactions.

Environmentally benign and diastereoselective synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted-2-imidazolines

A one-pot, membrane-assisted synthesis of 2,4,5-trisubstituted-2-imidazolines was developed, and substituent effects, reaction kinetics and mechanism by DFT were studied.

Structural diversity, physicochemical properties and application of imidazolium surfactants: Recent advances

The current review covers recent advances on development and investigation of cationic surfactants containing imidazolium headgroup, which are being extensively investigated for their self-aggregation properties and are currently being utilized in various conventional and non-conventional application areas. These surfactants are being used as: soft template for synthesis of mesoporous/microporous materials, drug and gene delivery agent, stabilizing agent for nanoparticles, dispersants for single/multi walled carbon nanotubes, antimicrobial and antifungal agent, viscosity modifiers, preparing nanocomposite materials, stabilizing microemulsions, corrosion inhibitors and catalyst for organic reactions. Recently several structural derivatives of these surfactants have been developed having many interesting physicochemical properties and they have demonstrated enormous potential in the area of nanotechnology, material science and biomedical science.
