The Use of Wearable Technologies in the Assessment of Physical Activity in Preschool- and School-Age Youth: Systematic Review

In recent years, physical activity assessment has increasingly relied on wearable monitors to provide measures for surveillance, intervention, and epidemiological research. This present systematic review aimed to examine the current research about the utilization of wearable technology in the evaluation in physical activities of preschool- and school-age children. A database search (Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus) for original research articles was performed. A total of twenty-one articles met the inclusion criteria, and the Cochrane risk of bias tool was used. Wearable technology can actually be a very important instrument/tool to detect the movements and monitor the physical activity of children and adolescents. The results revealed that there are a few studies on the influence of these technologies on physical activity in schools, and most of them are descriptive. In line with previous research, the wearable devices can be used as a motivational tool to improve PA behaviors and in the evaluation of PA interventions. However, the different reliability levels of the different devices used in the studies can compromise the analysis and understanding of the results.

Impact of Applying Information and Communication Technology Tools in Physical Education Classes

The authors of the present study explored how ICT devices used in P.E. lessons determine psychomotor performance, perceived motivational climate, and motivation. The students were allowed to use ICT devices (smartphone, webpages, Facebook) during a four-week intervention. In the course of the research project aimed to assess the impact of the application of ICT devices on performance and motivation, the participants were divided into two test groups and one control group. The sample consisted of secondary school students including 21 males and 64 females with the Mage = 16.72 years. The results showed that in groups where ICT devices were used, performance (p = 0.04) and task orientation (p = 0.00) significantly improved. Meanwhile, in the group in which ICT devices were not used, the intervention resulted in improved performance (p = 0.00) and by the end of the project, this trend was coupled with increased Ego orientation (p = 0.00) and higher rate of amotivation (p = 0.04). It can be concluded that the use of ICT tools has a positive impact on performance and motivation.

Direct Mobile Coaching as a Paradigm for the Creation of Mobile Feedback Systems

In sports feedback systems, digital systems perform tasks such as capturing, analysing and representing data. These systems not only aim to provide athletes and coaches with insights into performances but also help athletes learn new tasks and control movements, for example, to prevent injuries. However, designing mobile feedback systems requires a high level of expertise from researchers and practitioners in many areas. As a solution to this problem, we present Direct Mobile Coaching (DMC) as a design paradigm and model for mobile feedback systems. Besides components for feedback provisioning, the model consists of components for data recording, storage and management. For the evaluation of the model, its features are compared against state-of-the-art frameworks. Furthermore, the capabilities are benchmarked using a review of the literature. We conclude that DMC is capable of modelling all 39 identified systems while other identified frameworks (MobileCoach, Garmin Connect IQ SDK, RADAR) could (at best) only model parts of them. The presented design paradigm/model is applicable for a wide range of mobile feedback systems and equips researchers and practitioners with a valuable tool.

Smartphone applications for physical activity promotion from physical education

Smartphone applications (apps) are thought to be an adequate instructional strategy not only to improve the quality of the teaching in physical education (PE), but also to effectively promote leisure-time physical activity (PA) of adolescent students in this context. Although the use of smartphone apps has been generalized in PE, little is known about the curricular approach of smartphone apps to be implemented by teacher to teach specific curricular contents in PE lessons. Therefore, the aim of this research was threefold: a) to conduct a systematic search for smartphone apps focused on PA and sport; b) to assess the features, content and quality of every included smartphone app; and c) to analyze the relationships between every selected app and the secondary PE curriculum. Systematic searches were completed on Google Play Store from January 2021 to March 2021. Apps were included when they met: main goal focused on PA and sport; permitted use by underage; they are free; user scores of at least 4. The app selection process was carried out by several reviewers and concordance measures were estimated. Additionally, an app quality assessment was independently conducted by three reviewers. A total of 18 apps focused on PA were included. Particularly, eight apps were suitable for fitness, health and quality of life curricular content; two for sports content; four for body expression content; and four apps for outdoor PA content. The mean quality score was 4.00. Apps could be helpful for teachers to implement the secondary PE curriculum and effectively promote PA among adolescent students.

Robotic-Based Well-Being Monitoring and Coaching System for the Elderly in Their Daily Activities

The increasingly ageing population and the tendency to live alone have led science and engineering researchers to search for health care solutions. In the COVID 19 pandemic, the elderly have been seriously affected in addition to suffering from isolation and its associated and psychological consequences. This paper provides an overview of the RobWell (Robotic-based Well-Being Monitoring and Coaching System for the Elderly in their Daily Activities) system. It is a system focused on the field of artificial intelligence for mood prediction and coaching. This paper presents a general overview of the initially proposed system as well as the preliminary results related to the home automation subsystem, autonomous robot navigation and mood estimation through machine learning prior to the final system integration, which will be discussed in future works. The main goal is to improve their mental well-being during their daily household activities. The system is composed of ambient intelligence with intelligent sensors, actuators and a robotic platform that interacts with the user. A test smart home system was set up in which the sensors, actuators and robotic platform were integrated and tested. For artificial intelligence applied to mood prediction, we used machine learning to classify several physiological signals into different moods. In robotics, it was concluded that the ROS autonomous navigation stack and its autodocking algorithm were not reliable enough for this task, while the robot’s autonomy was sufficient. Semantic navigation, artificial intelligence and computer vision alternatives are being sought.

[Ethical implications in the development of functional training in mixed and augmented reality environments to treat hypertension in old age: A qualitative content analysis]

BACKGROUND

E-Health is of increasing importance in ensuring demand-oriented health care. In addition to technical feasibility, issues concerning the normative requirements for their use are growing. This paper discusses the ethical, legal and social implications of the use of mixed reality (MR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies in the therapy of elderly people with hypertension. It is based on the results of a study conducted as a part of the BMBF project BewARe.

METHODS

In the context of the above-mentioned background, an expert workshop was held with various stakeholders in an early phase of the BewARe project in accordance with the MEESTAR model, in which ethical, social and legal requirements for the development and use of AR/MR technologies were anticipated. The results of the workshop were subsequently evaluated using content analysis.

RESULTS

Content analysis identified eight main challenges for the development and use of AR/MR technologies in the therapy of elderly people with hypertension: ethical challenges for the decision-making and action capacity of older users (1), stereotyping (2), user-oriented development and implementation (3), data protection (4), support (5), health risks (6), social participation (7), and the need for an integrative approach (8).

DISCUSSION

In line with other studies, it can be shown that orientation towards medical guidelines and behavioral principles is essential to promote acceptance and adherence among end users and to minimize potential health risks. In addition, end users should be more strongly involved in the development process to overcome existing user stereotypes and establish qualification strategies for health-promoting use. Finally, legal and health economic framework conditions must be created to ensure data security and sustainable application concepts.

CONCLUSION

For a successful diffusion of AR/MR applications in health care, a holistic implementation concept is required which must involve various groups of social actors. In this context, the article discusses eight main challenges that can be understood as current challenges in this process.

The Relevance of Mobile Applications in the Learning of Physical Education

Mobile telephony has developed exponentially, offering a multitude of services that could be optimal for the educational field of physical and sports activity (PSA). The objective of this research was to analyze the use of smartphone by 40 Spanish teenagers and assess the degree of satisfaction of the Polar Beat application within the subject of physical education in high school. The instruments used were two quantitative questionnaires and the data were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS 24.0. The teenagers recognized that they use the smartphone for instant messaging, telephone calls and downloads of games and tunes. The Polar Beat application in physical education classes has allowed them a better understanding of the content developed; the students affirmed that their motivation towards PSA increased with the knowledge and use of the Polar Beat app and that smartphones are innovative and effective tools. With all this, the mobile phone could be an educational tool that awakens interest in teenagers and teachers.

Multicentre QUANT-study shows additional weight loss and gain of QoL via multiple feedback-devices in OPTIFAST®52-program Objective: Are three app-controlled feedback devices, tested against a simple pedometer in a weight reduction program, supporting sustainable therapy success and quality of life (QoL)? Methods: In this multi-centre randomised controlled study adults with obesity (n = 89, m = 46.5 years, women n = 54), achieved high weight loss (from 42.7 kg/m² to 35.2 kg/m²) while completing the first three month of the OPTIFAST®52-program. Thereafter the intervention group (IG) used feedback devices (BIA scale, blood pressure monitor, step counter), the control group a mechanical pedometer without app for another year. Intention-to-treat analysis (ITT) and As-treated analysis (AT) were carried out. Results: Feedback devices had a positive effect on fat-loss and secondary study objectives like QoL, leading to a better sustainability of these improvements. Participants in IG (AT for t2-t0) had improvements for Waist-to-Height-ratio (WHtR) and physically and mentally quality of life. Conclusion: The results are presumably based on an increase in self-efficacy and the experience of control. Future studies should be preceded by a pilot study to analyse acceptance problems.
