The experiences of public health nurses during the COVID-19 in Taiwan: A qualitative study

AIM

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a substantial effect on frontline health care workers and caused public health nurses (PHNs) to come under various forms of pressure. PHNs face high-risk challenges in their work environment, and their professional commitment and adaptability are key concerns. The aim of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of PHNs during the COVID-19 outbreak.

METHODS/DESIGN

Twenty PHNs who worked during the COVID-19 outbreak were recruited from seven public health centres through posters. Data were collected through in-depth interviews that comprised semi-structured and open-ended questions; subsequently, the data were analysed through content analysis.

RESULTS

Three themes emerged from the study findings, namely (1) the disorderliness of COVID-19 pandemic prevention work, (2) managing stress and fear, and (3) the establishment of a new normal. Because of the severity of the pandemic, the workload and stress associated with epidemic prevention policies continue to increase. PHNs may infect their family members and experience a sense of alienation and distance. They must also deal with irrationality and reactions in the people within their community.

CONCLUSION

Health department directors and policymakers should provide the necessary support and assistance to frontline pandemic prevention workers to increase the efficiency of pandemic prevention efforts.

Relationship between nurses' resilience and depression, anxiety and stress during the 2021 COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan

AIM

The COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan had a significant impact on medical services. These changes posed a threat to nurses' mental health. Resilience may protect nurses from the psychological impact of COVID-19. This study aimed to understand nurses' resilience and its relationship with nurses' characteristics (life and work situations) and mental health (depression, anxiety and stress) during the outbreak.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

This study surveyed the nurses at a hospital from 9 August 2021, to 20 August 2021. The content of the questionnaire included nurses' characteristics, resilience and mental health.

RESULTS

There was an association between higher resilience and lower mental health problems. We also found that some nurses' characteristics were positively correlated with mental health problems.

CONCLUSION

Some nurses' life and work situations predicted high levels of mental health problems during the pandemic. Additionally, higher levels of resilience were associated with lower levels of mental health problems.

Prelicensure Nursing Students' COVID-19 Attitude Impact on Nursing Career Decision during Pandemic Threat in Taiwan: A Cross-Sectional Study

The COVID-19 pandemic may cause a nursing shortage. Prelicensure nursing students who are exposed to high-stress COVID-19 events are related to defective career decision-making. This study validated the COVID-19 attitude scale and clarified how their attitudes about COVID-19 affected their behavioral intentions toward career decision-making. We conducted a cross-sectional study and recruited a convenience sample of 362 prelicensure nursing students from Northern and Central Taiwan. Two measurements were applied, including the Nursing Students Career Decision-making instrument and COVID-19 attitude scale. We used AMOS (version 22.0) to perform a confirmatory factor analysis. The Cronbach α of the COVID-19 attitude scale was 0.74 and consisted of four factors. The most positive attitude was the nursing belief factor, and the least positive factor was emotional burden. Prelicensure nursing students' COVID-19 attitudes were significantly positively associated with their career decision-making attitudes and perceived control (ß = 0.41 and ß = 0.40, respectively; p < 0.001). All the key latent variables explained significantly 23% of the variance in the career decision-making behavioral intentions module. In conclusion, the COVID-19 attitude scale is valid. Although the prelicensure nursing students' COVID-19 attitudes had no direct effect on career decision-making intentions, they had a direct effect on career decision-making attitudes and the perceived control.

The Relationship Among Organizational Identity, Psychological Resilience and Work Engagement of the First-Line Nurses in the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 Based on Structural Equation Model

Purpose

To explore how the organizational identity and psychological resilience affect work engagement of the front-line nurses in the prevention and control of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and to establish the relationship model based on these factors.

Material and Methods

Convenience sampling was applied to collect questionnaire samples from 216 nurses (from 12 cities in 6 provinces). General information questionnaires, organizational identity scale (OIQ), psychological resilience scale (CD-RISC), and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) were used as tools for data collection.

Results

Both organizational identification and psychological resilience had a positive impact on work engagement (r=0.457~0.669). The structural equation model indicated that psychological resilience had a significant partial mediating effect on the relationship between organizational identity and work engagement; the mediating effect value was 0.25, the overall effect value of work engagement was 0.73, and the mediating effect accounted for 34.2%.

Conclusion

Our results revealed that organizational identity could directly affect nursing. It can also indirectly affect nurses’ work engagement through the intermediary role of psychological resilience. In face of the COVID-19 epidemic, hospitals and nursing managers could improve the level of nurses’ job involvement by improving organizational identity, which in turn may have a positive effect on psychological resilience.
