Abstract
Background and Aim Currently, available evidence suggests prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is highly sensitive but poorly specific for prostate cancer detection in symptomatic patients and those with lower urinary tract symptoms. Serum ferritin and hepcidin, which are implicated in the pathogenesis of prostate cancers, may complement the diagnostic value of PSA. This study explored the correlation of serum PSA with ferritin and hepcidin as new and complementary diagnostic biomarkers for prostate disease. Methods This hospital-based case-control study was conducted at Methodist Hospital, Wenchi, with 90 participants. Venous blood sample was taken for complete blood count, PSA, ferritin, and hepcidin measurements using Mindray automated hematology analyzer and ELISA, respectively. Data were analyzed with SPSS version 27, and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Serum PSA levels were significantly higher among the Prostate Cancer patients compared to BPE patients [32.1 (18.2-47.6) vs. 18.3 (12.2-0.6), p < 0.001]. Levels of serum ferritin and hepcidin were found to be significantly higher in PCa patients compared to BPE and controls (p < 0.001). Serum PSA of prostate disease patients showed a strong positive correlation with levels of ferritin (r = 0.739, p < 0.001) but moderately correlated with serum hepcidin levels (r = 0.670, p < 0.001). Serum ferritin was found to be an excellent diagnostic marker for prostate cancer (AUC = 0.972, p < 0.001) and BPE (AUC = 0.900, p < 0.001). Serum hepcidin was a better marker for PCa (AUC = 0.911) but a poor BPE (AUC = 0.664, p = 0.023). Significant reduction in the levels of Hb, RBC, MCHC, and HCT but higher counts of TWBC and RDW-CV were observed in patients with prostate cancers compared to those with BPE and the normal control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion High levels of serum ferritin and hepcidin significantly correlated directly with increased serum total PSA levels and could play a valuable role to complement the noninvasive total PSA to improve diagnostic accuracy.

Abstract
Prostate cancer (PCa) remains a significant global health concern, being a major cause of cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide. Furthermore, profound understanding of the disease is needed. Prostate inflammation caused by external or genetic factors is a central player in prostate carcinogenesis. However, the mechanisms underlying inflammation-driven PCa remain poorly understood. This review dissects the diagnosis methods for PCa and the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the disease, clarifying the dynamic interplay between inflammation and leukocytes in promoting tumour development and spread. It provides updates on recent advances in elucidating and treating prostate carcinogenesis, and opens new insights for the use of bioactive compounds in PCa. Polyphenols, with their noteworthy antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, along with their synergistic potential when combined with conventional treatments, offer promising prospects for innovative therapeutic strategies. Evidence from the use of polyphenols and polyphenol-based nanoparticles in PCa revealed their positive effects in controlling tumour growth, proliferation, and metastasis. By consolidating the diverse features of PCa research, this review aims to contribute to increased understanding of the disease and stimulate further research into the role of polyphenols and polyphenol-based nanoparticles in its management.

Abstract
(1) Background: Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, with androgen suppression as the standard treatment. Despite initially responding to castration, most metastatic prostate cancer patients eventually experience progression. In these cases, Radium-223 is the chosen treatment. We hypothesized that the immunophenotype of circulating leukocytes conditions the response to Radium-223 treatment. (2) Material and Methods: In this prospective study, we collected peripheral blood from twelve mCRPC patients and nine healthy donors before (baseline) and during treatment with Radium-223. Immunophenotyping and the percentages of leukocyte-platelet complexes were determined by flow cytometry. The increments or decrements of leukocyte subsets between the baseline and the second Radium-223 injection were also calculated. (3) Results: At baseline, the mCRPC patients had a lower percentages of CD4+ T cells and B cells and higher percentages of NK and neutrophils than the HDs. In addition, they had more OX40+ CD4+ T cells, PD-L1+ CD8low cells, PD-L1+ B cells, PD-L1+ NK cells, and monocyte-platelet complexes than the HDs. Moreover, patients with slow and fast progression had different percentages of PD-L1+ CD8+ T cells. In particular, slow progression patients underwent an increment of PD-L1+ CD8+ T cells after two cycles of Radium-223. (4) Conclusions: The characterization of circulating immune cells before initiating Radium-223 treatment could become a non-invasive indicator of the response.

Abstract
Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most commonly diagnosed types of malignancy and is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men in developed countries. Cyclin dependent kinase 2 associate protein 1(CDK2AP1) is an epigenetic and cell cycle regulator gene which has been downregulated in several malignancies, but its involvement in PCa has not yet been investigated in a clinical setting. We assessed the prognostic value of CDK2AP1 expression in a cohort of men diagnosed with PCa (n = 275) treated non-surgically by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and studied the relationship between CDK2AP1 expression to various PCa molecular subtypes (ERG, PTEN, p53 and AR) and evaluated the association with clinical outcome. Further, we used bioinformatic tools to analyze the available TCGA PRAD transcriptomic data to explore the underlying mechanism. Our data confirmed increased expression of CDK2AP1 with higher Gleason Grade Group (GG) and metastatic PCa (p <0.0001). High CDK2AP1 expression was associated with worse overall survival (OS) (HR: 1.62, CI: 1.19−2.21, p = 0.002) and cause-specific survival (CSS) (HR: 2.012, CI 1.29−3.13, p = 0.002) using univariate analysis. When compared to each sub-molecular type. High CDK2AP1/PTEN-loss, abnormal AR or p53 expression showed even worse association to poorer OS and CCS and remained significant when adjusted for GG. Our data indicates that CDK2AP1 directly binds to p53 using the Co-Immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) technique, which was validated using molecular docking tools. This suggests that these two proteins have a significant association through several binding features and correlates with our observed clinical data. In conclusion, our results indicated that the CDK2AP1 overexpression is associate with worse OS and CSS when combined with certain PCa molecular subtypes; interaction between p53 stands out as the most prominent candidate which directly interacts with CDK2AP1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated chronic disease characterized by inflammatory demyelination in the central nervous system (CNS).As there is limited evidence on whether leukocyte-to-lymphocyte ratios (LLRs) are associated with MS, we carried out an investigation on the association between LLRs and MS as favorable markers and aimed to determine the cut-off LLR for the identification of early-stage MS patients. METHODS A matched case-control study enrolled a total of 120 MS inpatients and 120 age- and sex-matched non-MS inpatients from January 2013 to June 2018. LLRs were tested from peripheral venous blood routinely during hospitalization. Conditional logistic regression analyses were used to explore differences in LLRs between cases and controls. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to assess the diagnostic ability of LLRs and determine the best cut-off value. Disease disability was assessed using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). RESULTS The LLR was significantly associated with MS in hospitalized patients (OR: 2.372, 95% CI: 1.282 to 4.387, p < 0.001) after adjusting for potential confounders. The area under the curve (AUC) value was 0.793 (95% CI: 0.736 to 0.851). The cut-off value for LLR was 3.18, with sensitivity and specificity values of 62.5% (95% CI: 53.2% to 71.2%) and 88.3% (95% CI: 81.2% to 93.5%), respectively. The EDSS scores of the higher LLR group were significantly higher than the lower group. CONCLUSION Systemic inflammation measured using LLRs may be an inflammatory marker among MS inpatients. LLRs may serve as favorable inflammatory markers with which to discriminate MS among Chinese subjects.

Abstract
Anticancer drugs and diagnostics can be transported in nanoscale vesicles that provide a flexible platform. A hybrid nanoparticle, a nano assembly made up of many types of nanostructures, has the greatest potential to perform these two activities simultaneously. Nanomedicine has shown the promise of vesicular carriers based on lipopolymersomes, lipid peptides, and metallic hybrid nano-vesicle systems. However, there are significant limitations that hinder the clinical implementation of these systems at the commercial scale, such as low productivity, high energy consumption, expensive setup, long process durations, and the current cancer therapies described in this article. Combinatorial hybrid systems can be used to reduce the above limitations. A greater therapeutic index and improved clinical results are possible with hybrid nanovesicular systems, which integrate the benefits of many carriers into a single structure. Due to their unique properties, cell-based drug delivery systems have shown tremendous benefits in the treatment of cancer. Nanoparticles (NPs) can benefit significantly from the properties of erythrocytes and platelets, which are part of the circulatory cells and circulate for a long time. Due to their unique physicochemical properties, nanomaterials play an essential role in cell-based drug delivery. Combining the advantages of different nanomaterials and cell types gives the resulting delivery systems a wide range of desirable properties. NPs are nextgeneration core-shell nanostructures that combine a lipid shell with a polymer core. The fabrication of lipid-polymer hybrid NPs has recently undergone a fundamental shift, moving from a two-step to a one-step technique based on the joint self-assembly of polymers and lipids. Oncologists are particularly interested in this method as a combinatorial drug delivery platform because of its two-in-one structure. This article addresses various preparative methods for the preparation of hybrid nano-vesicular systems. It also discusses the cellular mechanism of hybrid nano-vesicular systems and describes the thorough knowledge of various hybrid vesicular systems.

INTRODUCTION In the current study, we have investigated the effects of the different modalities of treatment (volume of radiotherapy [RT], previous surgery) as well as the Gleason score of prostate cancer (PC) on the lymphocyte composition of PC patients undergoing RT. METHODS This is a monoinstitutional study that prospectively included PC patients that underwent RT from January 2016 until December 2017. To compare the different evaluations, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used among 2 times (Timepoint 0 to Timepoint 1). Percentage variation was calculated for all the lymphocyte subpopulation and was correlated with clinical parameters (previous surgery, Gleason score, and pelvic irradiation) with the χ2 test. The statistical analysis was repeated also on the stratified dataset according to the above parameters (previous surgery, Gleason score, and whole pelvic radiotherapy [WPRT]). RESULTS One hundred and eleven patients were included in the present analysis. All the lymphocyte subpopulations resulted significantly lower after RT. The modifications of several lymphocyte subpopulations correlated with previous surgery, Gleason score, and WPRT, although stratified analysis demonstrated that WPRT showed the greatest correlation. CONCLUSION Our results could be used to design a prospective trial in order to study the use of WPRT on the lymphocyte subpopulations.

Abstract
All men, almost, suffer from prostatic disorders in average life expectancy. In the year of 1950s, the first autopsy of prostate gland discovered the link between Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and Prostate Cancer (PCa). After that, many histology, biochemistry, epidemiology studies explained the association and associated risk factor for the same. From the various scientific evidence, it is proved that both diseases share some common transcription factors and signalling pathways. Still, BPH cannot be considered as the first step of PCa progression. To define, the relationship between both of the diseases, a well-defined large epidemiological study is needed. Along with androgen signalling, imbalanced apoptosis, oxidative stress, and microbial infection also crucial factors that significantly affect the pathogenesis of BPH. Various signalling pathways are involved in the progression of BPH. Androgen signalling is the driving force for the progress of PCa. In PCa androgen signalling is upregulated as compared to a healthy prostate. Some dominant Androgen-regulated genes and their functions have been discussed in this work.

Abstract
This review summarizes recent developments regarding molecular imaging markers for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of prostate cancer (PCa). Currently, the clinical standard includes MR imaging using unspecific gadolinium-based contrast agents. Specific molecular probes for the diagnosis of PCa could improve the molecular characterization of the tumor in a non-invasive examination. Furthermore, molecular probes could enable targeted therapies to suppress tumor growth or reduce the tumor size.

Abstract
Background and aim: The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic performance of new morphology-related indices and Child–Turcotte–Pugh (CTP) and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) scores during hospitalization in predicting the onset of bacterial infection in patients with liver cirrhosis. Material and methods: A total of 171 patients (56.9% males; median age 59 years; total number of hospitalizations 209) with liver cirrhosis were included in this observational study. The diagnosis of cirrhosis was made on the basis of clinical, biochemical, ultrasonic, histological, and endoscopic findings. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), modified aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), aspartate aminotransferase-to-alanine aminotransferase ratio (AAR), Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-to-monocyte ratio (NMR), and CTP and MELD scores were calculated for the cases of patients with cirrhosis. Results: Bacterial infection was diagnosed in 60 of the 209 (28.7%) hospitalizations of patients with cirrhosis. The most common infections were urinary tract infection (UTI), followed by pneumonia and sepsis. The more severe the liver failure, the greater the bacterial infection prevalence and mortality. Patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis were infected more often than subjects with compensated cirrhosis (50.0% vs. 12.9%, p = 0.003). The calculated MELD score, CTP, NLR, LMR, AAR, monocyte count, and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration were also related to the bacterial infection prevalence, and mortality areas under the curve (AUC) were 0.629, 0.687, 0.606, 0.715, 0.610, 0.648, and 0.685, respectively. The combined model with two variables (LMR and CTP) had the best AUC of 0.757. The most common bacteria isolated from patients with UTI were Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Gram-negative bacteria were also responsible for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), and together with gram-positive streptococci and staphylococci, these microorganisms were isolated from blood cultures of patients with sepsis. Significant differences were found between CTP classification, MELD score, NLR, LMR, AAR, CRP, and PLR in patients with cirrhosis with, or without, bacterial infection. Conclusions: Bacterial infection prevalence is relatively high in patients with liver cirrhosis. Although all analyzed scores, including the LMR, NLR, aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT), CRP, CTP, and MELD, allowed the prediction of bacterial occurrence, the LMR had the highest clinical utility, according to the area under the curve (AUC) and odds ratio (OR).

More studies are required to verify current findings and establish a definite cutoff point.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the past decades, the study of the microenvironment of cancer has supported the hypothesis between inflammation and cancer. Previous studies have demonstrated a promising value of platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a systemic inflammatory response in prostate cancer. AIM To evaluate their pre-biopsy values of PLR and NLR in predicting prostate cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS This is a diagnostic study with retrospective design. We included all benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa) patients who underwent prostate biopsy in Adam Malik Hospital between August 2011 and August 2015. We used PSA value above 4 ng/dL as the threshold for the biopsy candidates. The relationship between pre-biopsy variables affecting the percentage of prostate cancer risk was evaluated, including age, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level, and estimated prostate volume (EPV). The PLR and NLR were calculated from the ratio of related platelets or absolute neutrophil counts with their absolute lymphocyte counts. The values then analysed to evaluate their associations with the diagnosis of BPH and PCa. RESULTS Out of 298 patients included in this study, we defined two groups consist of 126 (42.3%) BPH and 172 PCa (57.7%) patients. Mean age for both groups are 66.36 ± 7.53 and 67.99 ± 7.48 years old (p = 0.64), respectively. There are statistically significant differences noted from both BPH and PCa groups in terms of PSA (19.28 ± 27.11 ng/dL vs 40.19 ± 49.39 ng/dL), EPV (49.39 ± 23.51 cc vs 58.10 ± 30.54 cc), PLR (160.27 ± 98.96 vs 169.55 ± 78.07), and NLR (3.57 ± 3.23 vs 4.22 ± 2.59) features of both BPH and PCa groups respectively (p < 0.05). A Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) analysis was performed for PLR and NLR in analysing their value in predicting prostate cancer. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) of PLR is 57.9% with a sensitivity of 56.4% and specificity of 55.6% in the cut-off point of 143 (p = 0.02). The NLR cut-off point of 3.08 gives 62.8% AUC with 64.5% sensitivity and 63.5% specificity. These AUCs were comparable with the AUC of PSA alone (68.5%). We performed logistic regression between PSA, PLR, and NLR with result in the exclusion of PLR if calculated conjunctively. Therefore, NLR has a promising performance in predicting PCa in patients with PSA above 4 ng/dL (OR = 3.2; 95%CI: 1.96-5.11). We found as many as 80 (63.5%) patients with benign biopsy results with negative NLR value in this study. CONCLUSION NLR has promising value in predicting prostate cancer. A further prospective study in validating its diagnostic value was needed.

We asked for permission from the preceding authors of Indonesian Prostate Cancer Risk Calculator (IPCRC) and calculated its value from 98 randomised patients consist of 45 (45.92%) BPH and 53 (54.08%) PCa. We found a comparable value between PLR/NLR with IPCRC in predicting prostate cancer (AUC of 67.6%, 75.3%, and 68.4%, respectively) with a statistically significant difference of all value in both groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS PLR gives promising value in predicting prostate cancer in suspected patients. We suggest a further prospective study to validate its diagnostic values so it can be used as applicable routine calculation.

In addition, it has been suggested that the toxic granules in neutrophils lead to inflammation in the cancerous tissues besides the activation of monocytes, so in this study we aimed to evaluate the blood neutrophil count besides the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as a predictive factor for prostate biopsy results and their relationship with prostate cancer grade in patients undergoing biopsy of the prostate. METHODS: For all men with irritative lower urinary tract symptoms visiting Hasheminezhad Hospital from January to July 2015, in case of having a suspicious digital rectal examination or aged above 40 years, prostate-specific antigen was requested and in case of abnormal results, they underwent prostate biopsy. In order to examine the study hypothesis, the blood neutrophil count and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio were measured and compared with the abnormal prostate-specific antigen results and suspicious digital rectal examination. RESULTS: Among the 500 referred samples for biopsy, 352 (70.4%) had a negative biopsy result, while it was positive in the other 148 (29.6). The mean neutrophil count showed no statistical difference regarding the biopsy results (p = 0.381). When measuring the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio again with biopsy results, no statistically significant difference was obtained based on the biopsy results (p = 0.112). CONCLUSION: Neutrophil count and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio cannot be predictive factors for positive prostate cancer biopsy.

Abstract
This is the first study investigating the clinical relevance of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) in genomic DNA from white blood cells (WBC) in the context of prostate cancer (PCa) and other prostate pathologies. Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, we identified significantly different distributions of patients with low and elevated 5hmC content in WBC DNA across controls and patients with prostate cancer (PCa), atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP), and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The measured values were within the normal range for most PCa patients, while the latter category was predominant for ASAP. We observed a wider heterogeneity in 5hmC content in all of the prostate pathologies analyzed when compared to the healthy age-matched controls. When compared to blood levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), this 5hmC-based biomarker had a lower performance in PCa detection than the use of a PSA cut-off of 2.5 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). Above this threshold, however, it delineated almost three quarters of PCa patients from controls and patients with other prostate pathologies. Overall, genome-wide 5hmC content of WBC DNA appears to be applicable for detecting non-cancerous prostate diseases, rather than PCa. Our results also suggest a potential clinical usefulness of complementing PSA as a PCa marker by the addition of a set of hydroxymethylation markers in the blood, but further studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radiotherapy (RT) is an established treatment for patients with primary and recurrent prostate cancer. Herein, the effects of definitive and salvage RT on the composition of lymphocyte subpopulations were investigated in patients with prostate cancer to study potential immune effects. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 33 prostate cancer patients were treated with definitive (n = 10) or salvage RT (n = 23) after biochemical relapse. The absolute number of lymphocytes and the distribution of lymphocyte subpopulations were analyzed by multiparameter flow cytometry before RT, at the end of RT, and in the follow-up period. RESULTS Absolute lymphocyte counts decreased significantly after RT in both patient groups and a significant drop was observed in the percentage of B cells directly after RT from 10.1 ± 1.3 to 6.0 ± 0.7% in patients with definitive RT and from 9.2 ± 0.8 to 5.8 ± 0.7% in patients with salvage RT. In contrast, the percentages of T and natural killer (NK) cells remained unaltered directly after RT in both patient groups. However, 1 year after RT, the percentage of CD3+ T cells was significantly lower in patients with definitive and salvage RT. The percentage of regulatory T cells was slightly upregulated in primary prostate cancer patients after definitive RT, but not after salvage RT. CONCLUSION Definitive and salvage RT exert similar effects on the composition of lymphocyte subpopulations in prostate cancer patients. Total lymphocyte counts are lower in both patient groups compared to healthy controls and further decreased after RT. B cells are more sensitive to definitive and salvage RT than T and NK cells.

Abstract
Background Annona muricata Linn which comes from Annonaceae family possesses many therapeutic benefits as reported in previous studies and to no surprise, it has been used in many cultures to treat various ailments including headaches, insomnia, and rheumatism to even treating cancer. However, Annona muricata Linn obtained from different cultivation area does not necessarily offer the same therapeutic effects towards breast cancer (in regards to its bioactive compound production). In this study, anti-proliferative and anti-cancer effects of Annona muricata crude extract (AMCE) on breast cancer cell lines were evaluated. Methods A screening of nineteen samples of Annona muricata from different location was determined by MTT assay on breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and 4 T1) which revealed a varied potency (IC50) amongst them. Then, based on the IC50 profile from the anti-proliferative assay, further downward assays such as cell cycle analysis, Annexin V/FITC, AO/PI, migration, invasion, and wound healing assay were performed only with the most potent leaf aqueous extract (B1 AMCE) on 4 T1 breast cancer cell line to investigate its anti-cancer effect. Then, the in vivo anti-cancer study was conducted where mice were fed with extract after inducing the tumor. At the end of the experiment, histopathology of tumor section, tumor nitric oxide level, tumor malondialdehyde level, clonogenic assay, T cell immunophenotyping, and proteome profiler analysis were performed. Results Annona muricata crude extract samples exhibited different level of cytotoxicity toward breast cancer cell lines. The selected B1 AMCE reduced the tumor’s size and weight, showed anti-metastatic features, and induced apoptosis in vitro and in vivo of the 4 T1 cells. Furthermore, it decreased the level of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde in tumor while also increased the level of white blood cell, T-cell, and natural killer cell population. Conclusion The results suggest that, B1 AMCE is a promising candidate for cancer treatment especially in breast cancer and deserves further research as an alternative to conventional drugs while also stressed out the selection of soursop sample which plays a significant role in determining its potential therapeutic effect on cancer. Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of prostate cancer is considered high in many countries, and screening tests are very important in order to detect prostate cancer in its early stages; however false positivity with these screening tests means that a lot of patients undergo unnecessary biopsy, which is an invasive procedure, for the confirmatory test. The purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency of unnecessary biopsy cases in patients referred for prostate biopsy in one of the most important and overload cancer centers in Syria. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective data for a period of four years between January 2009 and December 2012 were collected in Al- Bayrouni University Medical hospital in Damascus, Syria. The patients from whom data were collected were referred to our histopathological department because of elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) serum or an abnormal digital rectal examination (DRE). All patients underwent prostatic TRUS-guided biopsies. Diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa) or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was based on histopathological examination and prostate cancers cases were graded and scored according to the Gleason score system. RESULTS For the 406 patients referred to biopsy, the mean±SD age was 58.4 ±23.3 years. The mean ± SD PSA level was 49.2±21.5 ng/ ml. Of the total we found 237 patients diagnosed with PCa (58. 4%), 166 patients with BPH (40.9%) and 3 cases were unable to be diagnosed (0.7%) because of biopsy collection errors. CONCLUSIONS Our study shows that a high percentage of patients are undergoing unnecessary biopsy, which suggests that the performed screening tests had a high level of false positive and may need re-evaluation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aims of this study were to investigate the utility of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) as a simple and readily available marker in prostate cancer, as well as to evaluate RDW as a predictor of progression in prostate cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated 62 newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients who underwent transrectal ultrasound (TRUS)-guided biopsy and 62 healthy controls of mean age 64 (range, 45-75) years at the Urology Clinic of Bozok University Hospital. Data collection was performed using our laboratory information system database to retrieve findings regarding RDW, hemoglobin, prostate- specific antigen (PSA), and age. The RDW values were compared between the healthy control group and prostate cancer patients. A high risk of progression as defined as a Gleason score (GS) >6, total number of cores positive for cancer >33%, each core containing >50% cancer cells, and a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level >10 ng/ mL. Patients were classified according to risk of progression, as well as divided into subgroups according to the RDW quartile. RESULTS The mean RDW value of prostate cancer patients was 14.6, compared with 13.7 in the healthy control group (p=0.001). A higher RDW was associated with an increased risk of progression, whereas a lower RDW value was correlated with a low risk of progression. CONCLUSIONS RDW is an easily derived measure that might, in combination with other markers, help predict prostate cancer risk and progression. We suggest that RDW may be used in combination with other parameters in the assessment of prostate cancer.
