Abstract
BACKGROUND This meta-analysis aimed to systematically summarize the association between cancer risks and glutathione s-transferases (GSTs) among smokers and drinkers. METHODS Literature was searched through PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and WANFANG published from 2001 to 2022. Stata was used with fixed-effect model or random-effect model to calculate pooled odds ratios (ORs) and the 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Sensitivity and heterogeneity calculations were performed, and publication bias was analyzed by Begg and Egger's test. Regression analysis was performed on the correlated variables about heterogeneity, and the false-positive report probabilities (FPRP) and the Bayesian False Discovery Probability (BFDP) were calculated to assess the confidence of a statistically significant association. RESULTS A total of 85 studies were eligible for GSTs and cancer with smoking status (19,604 cases and 23,710 controls), including 14 articles referring to drinking status (4409 cases and 5645 controls). GSTM1-null had significant associations with cancer risks (for smokers: OR = 1.347, 95% CI: 1.196-1.516, P < .001; for nonsmokers: OR = 1.423, 95% CI: 1.270-1.594, P < .001; for drinkers: OR = 1.748, 95% CI: 1.093-2.797, P = .02). GSTT1-null had significant associations with cancer risks (for smokers: OR = 1.356, 95% CI: 1.114-1.651, P = .002; for nonsmokers: OR = 1.103, 95% CI: 1.011-1.204, P = .028; for drinkers: OR = 1.423, 95% CI: 1.042-1.942, P = .026; for nondrinkers: OR = 1.458, 95% CI: 1.014-2.098, P = .042). Negative associations were found between GSTP1rs1695(AG + GG/AA) and cancer risks among nondrinkers (OR = 0.840, 95% CI: 0.711-0.985, P = .032). CONCLUSIONS GSTM1-null and GSTT1-null might be related cancers in combination with smoking or drinking, and GSTP1rs1695 might be associated with cancers among drinkers.

Abstract
Background: Factors such as variations in thyroid carcinoma (THCA) gene characteristics could influence the clinical outcome. Ferroptosis and immunity have been verified to play an essential role in various cancers, and could affect the cancer patients' prognosis. However, their relationship to the progression and prognosis of many types of THCA remains unclear. Methods: First, we extracted prognosis-related immune-related genes and ferroptosis-related genes from 2 databases for co-expression analysis to obtain prognosis-related differentially expressed immune-related ferroptosis genes (PR-DE-IRFeGs), and screened BID and CDKN2A for building a prognostic model. Subsequently, multiple validation methods were used to test the model's performance and compare its performance with other 4 external models. Then, we explored the mechanism of immunity and ferroptosis in the occurrence, development and prognosis of THCA from the perspectives of anti-tumor immunity, CDKN2A-related competitive endogenous RNA regulatory, copy number variations and high frequency gene mutation. Finally, we evaluated this model's clinical practice value. Results: BID and CDKN2A were identified as prognostic risk and protective factors, respectively. External data and qRT-PCR experiment also validated their differential expression. The model's excellent performance has been repeatedly verified and outperformed other models. Risk scores were significantly associated with most immune cells/functions. Risk score/2 PR-DE-IRFeGs expression was strongly associated with BRAF/NRAS/HRAS mutation. Single copy number deletion of CDKN2A is associated with upregulation of CDKN2A expression and worse prognosis. The predicted regulatory network consisting of CYTOR, hsa-miRNA-873-5p and CDKN2A was shown to significantly affect prognosis. The model and corresponding nomogram have been shown to have excellent clinical practice value. Conclusion: The model can effectively predict the THCA patients' prognosis and guide clinical treatment. Ferroptosis and immunity may be involved in the THCA's progression through antitumor immunity and BRAF/NRAS/HRAS mutation. CYTOR-hsa-miRNA-873-5p-CDKN2A regulatory networks and single copy number deletion of CDKN2A may also affect THCA' progression and prognosis.

Abstract
Aim: In this case control study involving, 220 human subjects; polymorphisms in xenobiotic metabolizing
genes (GST-M1, -T1 and -P1) and their association to lung cancer risk is being analysed among smokers and nonsmokers.
GSTM1 or GSTT1 gene polymorphism and amino acid changes in GSTP1 have been correlated and may be
associated to lung cancer risk. Other factor includes exposure to environmental pollutants and life style choices. We
have explored gene-gene and gene-environment interaction in the aetiology of lung cancer risk among north Indian
population. Patients and Methods: For the study we have collected 120 lung cancer patient blood samples from
Kamala Nehru Memorial Cancer Hospital, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh and 100 matched controls. DNA was isolated
and GST-M1 and - T1 genotyping were assessed by multiplex PCR whereas the GSTP1 polymorphism was analysed
using restriction fragment length polymorphism. The risk of lung carcinogenesis was assessed using logistic regression
analysis calculating the odd ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The risk of lung carcinogenesis
was three fold higher for null GSTT1 (OR=3.045, 95%CI=1.750-5.301, p-value <0.001) genotype; whereas other two
types; GSTM1 (OR= 1.342, 95% CI=0.788-2.284, p-value=0.270) and GSTP1 (OR=0.806, 95% CI=0.526-1.236,
p-value=0.323) showed no association to lung cancer susceptibility respectively. Smokers diagnosed with lung cancer
had more null genotypes for GSTT1 (OR=4.773, 95%CI=1.939-11.751, p<0.001). The ‘at risk’ genotype combination
GSTM1 (null) /GSTT1 (null) (OR=1.76, 95%CI; 0.920-3.370, p-value=0.03) showed increased susceptibility to lung
cancer risk. The genotype combination of GSTT1 (null)/GSTP1 (Ile/Ile) (p=0.009) was associated with increased lung
cancer risk. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that; GSTT1 null genotype were more susceptible for lung
cancer risk and smoking increases the susceptibility for lung cancer several folds among the North Indian population.
Gene-gene interaction for null genotypes of GSTM1 and GSTT1 were correlated with higher risk of having lung cancer.

Prevalence of and risk factors for refractive error: a cross-sectional study in Han and Mongolian adults aged 40-80 years in Inner Mongolia, China. Eye (Lond) 2019; 33:1722-1732. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence of and risk factors for refractive error (RE) in Han and Mongolian adults aged 40-80 years in Inner Mongolia in China and to identify ethnic differences in RE between these populations. METHODS Our cross-sectional study is part of the China National Health Survey (CNHS). The age-adjusted prevalence of RE in Han and Mongolian adults aged 40-80 in Inner Mongolia were compared. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors. RESULTS Among 2090 people, the age-adjusted prevalence of myopia (SE < -0.5D), hyperopia (SE > 0.5D), high myopia (SE < -6.0D) and astigmatism (cylinder ≥ 0.5D) were 29.4% (95% confidence interval (CI), 27.4-31.3%), 28.4% (95% CI, 26.4-30.5%), 3.6% (95% CI, 2.8-4.4%) and 65.9% (95% CI, 63.9-67.9%), respectively. The age-adjusted prevalence of myopia in the Han population was higher than that in the Mongolian population (31.8% vs. 23.0%, p < 0.001), but the prevalence of hyperopia was lower (25.8% vs. 35.3%, p = 0.002). In the multivariable logistic regression, ethnicity was associated with myopia (p = 0.001) and hyperopia (p = 0.001). Myopia was also associated with age, time spent in rural areas (p < 0.001) and middle/high school and undergraduate/graduate education levels (p = 0.027 and p < 0.001, respectively, compared with lower education levels). Additionally, age, height (p = 0.015) and pterygium (p = 0.014) were associated with hyperopia. CONCLUSIONS Ethnicity is closely related to RE in Inner Mongolia in mainland China. Our study investigates differences in prevalence of and risk factors for RE between the Han and Mongolian populations, which could not be explained by differences in the risk factors investigated in this study.

Abstract
Objective(s): Lung cancer, caused primarily by smoking, is one of the leading determinants of mortality throughout
the world. Here we investigated the effects of polymorphisms in two enzymes, i.e., GSTT1 and GSTM1, related to
the antioxidant defense line against carcinogens associated with lung cancer among a select group of Iranian people.
Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty lung cancer patients from two referral centers in Tehran, Iran, were
recruited for comparison with 120 healthy controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from the FFPE tumor tissues of
the select cases and peripheral blood buffy coats of healthy controls. The polymorphisms of GSTT1 and GSTM1 were
investigated by multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Results: With the 240 samples studied, no specific relationship
with lung cancer was discerned for the GSTM1 (P=0.35; OR=1/33; 95% CI=0.79-2.25) polymorphism, but the GSTT1
(P=0.005; OR=2.4; CI=1.32-4.35) gene polymorphism revealed a notable association on logistic regression, taking
into account age and sex factors. Furthermore, the GSTT1 genotype distribution in patients with LSCC was different
from that of healthy cases (P=0.006; OR=3.11; CI=1.38-7.04). The risk of developing lung cancer with the T0M1
genotype was 3.46 times higher than with T1M1 genotype (P=0.002; OR=3.46; CI=1.61-7.46). Moreover, the risk of
developing LSCC cancer in people with T0M1 genotypes was significantly elevated (P=0.004; OR=4.5; CI=1.62-12.52).
Conclusion: Unlike GSTM1, the GSTT1 genotype distribution is associated with the incidence of lung cancer in Iranian
people. Different types of lung cancer appear to show various correlations with GST polymorphisms in this regard.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Studies in different populations have shown that polymorphisms within the CYP1A1 gene play an important role in determining individual susceptibility to lung cancer. However, the data obtained so far have been contradictory within the same or different populations. Few studies have focused on the synergistic effect of CYP1A1 polymorphisms on the susceptibility to lung cancer overall and to different histological subtypes along with the impact of smoking. METHODS A total of 704 individuals (353 lung cancer patients and 351 controls) were evaluated for CYP1A1 polymorphisms. CYP1A1 genotyping was done by means of PCR-RFLP. RESULTS A CYP1A1 mutant genotype was found to be significantly associated with lung cancer (OR = 3.15; 95% CI = 1.75-5.71; p = 0.0001) and this risk was 4-fold higher in case of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The CYP1A1 m2 allelic variant was found to be strongly associated with the risk of SCC and adenocarcinoma. The combined "at risk" genotypes of the CYP1A1 m1 and m2 allelic variants were associated with lung cancer risk and this risk was higher in case of SCC (OR = 2.0; 95% CI = 1.97-3.81; p = 0.028). Furthermore, the lung cancer risk was associated with smoking, especially in heavy smokers carrying CYP1A1 variant genotypes. We also observed that heavy smokers with the mutant m1 genotype were at increased risk of SCC (OR = 5.4; 95% CI = 2.4-11.9; p<0.0001). Furthermore, when stratified for smoking dose and histology, the effect was compounded in heavy smokers and SCC (OR = 7.5; 95% CI = 1.8-30.9; p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS Polymorphism in the CYP1A1 gene is an important risk modifier for lung cancer.

Abstract
In first part of this study, a systematic review was designed to explore the involvement of CYP1A1 and GSTP1 genes in breast cancerogenesis. Based on systematic review, we designed a study to screen CYP1A1 and GSTP1 genes for mutation and their possible association with breast carcinogenesis. A total of 400 individuals were collected and analyzed by PCR-SSCP. After sequence analysis of coding region of CYP1A1 we identified eleven mutations in different exons of respective gene. Among these eleven mutations, ~3 folds increased breast cancer risk was found associated with Asp82Glu mutation (OR 2.99; 95% CI 1.26-7.09), with Ser83Thr mutation (OR 2.99; 95% CI 1.26-7.09) and with Glu86Ala mutation (OR 3.18; 95% CI 1.27-7.93) in cancer patients compared to controls. Furthermore, ~4 folds increase in breast cancer risk was found associated with Asp347Glu, Phe398Tyr and 5178delT mutations (OR 3.92; 95% CI 1.35-11.3) in patients compared to controls. The sequence analysis of GSTP1 resulted in identification of total five mutations. Among these five mutations, ~3 folds increase in breast cancer risk was observed associated with 1860G>A mutation, with 1861-1876delCAGCCCTCTGGAGTGG mutation (OR 2.70; 95% CI 1.10-6.62) and with 1861C>A mutation (OR 2.97; 95% CI 1.01-8.45) in cancer patients compared to controls. Furthermore, ~5 folds increase in breast cancer risk was associated with 1883G>T mutation (OR 4.75; 95% CI 1.46-15.3) and ~6 folds increase in breast cancer risk was found associated with Iso105Val mutation (OR 6.43; 95% CI 1.41-29.3) in cancer patients compared to controls. Our finding, based on systematic review and experimental data suggest that the polymorphic CYP1A1 and GSTP1 genes may contribute to risk of developing breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco smoking is considered a risk factor for cervical cancer development due to the presence of tobacco based carcinogenic metabolites in cervical cells of female smokers. In this study, we investigated the role of the T3801C (MspI) polymorphism of CYP1A1, a gene encoding an enzyme necessary for the initiation of tobacco based carcinogen metabolism, on cervical cancer risk. The T to C substitution may alter CYP1A1 activities, potentially elevating cervical cancer risk. Since results of gene-disease association studies vary according to the study population, the multi-ethnic population of Malaysia provides an excellent representative cohort for identifying and comparing the cervical cancer risk among the 3 major ethnics in Southeast Asia in relation to CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 195 Thin Prep Pap smear samples from HPV negative and cancer free females were randomly selected as controls while 106 formalin fixed paraffin embedded samples from females with invasive cervical cancer were randomly selected for the cases group. The polymorphisms were identified using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) PCR. RESULTS We found no significant associations between CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism and cervical cancer in the general Malaysian female population. However, upon ethnic stratification, the variant C/C genotype was significantly associated with a 4.66-fold increase in cervical cancer risk in Malay females (95% CI= 1.21-17.9; p=0.03). No significant association was observed in the Chinese and Indian females. Additionally, there were no significant associations in the dominant model and allele frequency model analysis in both the general and ethnically stratified female population of Malaysia. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the C/C genotype of CYP1A1 MspI polymorphism is associated with the development of cervical carcinoma in the Malay females of Malaysia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tobacco and alcohol contain or may generate carcinogenic compounds related to cancers. CYP1A1 enzymes act upon these carcinogens before elimination from the body. The aim of this study was to investigate whether CYP1A1 T3801C polymorphism modulates the relationship between tobacco and alcohol- associated head and neck cancer (HNC) susceptibility among the northeast Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and seventy histologically confirmed HNC cases and 230 controls were included within the study. The CYP1A1 T3801C polymorphism was determined using PCR-RFLP, and the results were confirmed by DNA sequencing. Logistic regression (LR) and multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) approaches were applied for statistical analysis. RESULTS The CYP1A1 CC genotype was significantly associated with HNC risk (P=0.045). A significantly increased risk of HNC (OR=6.09; P<0.0001) was observed in individuals with combined habits of smoking, alcohol drinking and tobacco-betel quid chewing. Further, gene-environment interactions revealed enhanced risks of HNC among smokers, alcohol drinkers and tobacco-betel quid chewers carrying CYP1A1 TC or CC genotypes. The highest risk of HNC was observed among smokers (OR=7.55; P=0.009) and chewers (OR=10.8; P<0.0001) carrying the CYP1A1 CC genotype. In MDR analysis, the best model for HNC risk was the three-factor model combination of smoking, tobacco-betel quid chewing and the CYP1A1 variant genotype (CVC=99/100; TBA=0.605; P<0.0001); whereas interaction entropy graphs showed synergistic interaction between tobacco habits and CYP1A1. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm that the CYP1A1 T3801C polymorphism modifies the risk of HNC and further demonstrated importance of gene-environment interaction.

Abstract
Northeastern India is a major nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) high risk-area although the rest of the country has very low incidence. A case-control study of 105 NPC cases and 115 controls was conducted to identify the potential risk factors for NPC development in this region. Information was collected by interviewer about socio-demographic characteristics, cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, dietary history, occupational history, and a family history of cancer. Epstein-Barr viral load was assayed from the blood DNA by real time PCR. Associations between GSTs genotypes, cytochrome P450 family including CYP1A1, CYP2E1 and CYP2A6 polymorphisms and susceptibility to relationship between the diseases were studied using PCR-RFLP assay. Results indicate that Epstein-Barr virus load was significantly higher in patients compared to controls (p<0.0001). Furthermore, concentration of blood EBV-DNA was significantly higher in advanced stage disease (Stage III and IV) than in early stage disease (Stage I and II) (p<0.05). Presence of CYP2A6 variants that reduced the enzyme activity was significantly less frequent in cases than controls. Smoked meat consumption, exposure to smoke, living in poorly ventilated house and alcohol consumption were associated with NPC development among the population of Northeastern India. Thus, overall our study revealed that EBV viral load and genetic polymorphism of CYP2A6 along with living practices which include smoked meat consumption, exposure to smoke, living in poorly ventilated houses and alcohol consumption are the potential risk factors of NPC in north eastern region of India. Understanding of the risk factors and their role in the etiology of NPC are helpful forpreventive measures and screening.

Abstract
Many studies have examined the interaction between CYP1A1 MspI gene polymorphism and smoking for the risk of lung cancer risk in Chinese, but their results have been inconsistent. Therefore, a meta-analysis was performed to ascertain this issue. PubMed, Springer Link, Ovid and other Chinese databases were searched to include all the relevant studies. Smoking status was categorised as 'smokers' and 'non-smokers.' The pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using fixed or random effect model. Subgroup analyses according to ethnicity, source of control and geographical location were also conducted. This meta-analysis identified 13 studies containing 2248 lung cases and 3079 controls. Overall, a significant association between lung cancer and the variants of CYP1A1 MspI was found among smokers (type B and type C combined vs. type A: OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.15-3.11, P = 0.000 for heterogeneity), whereas not found among non-smokers. Similar to the overall results, stratified analyses showed that the increased risk of lung cancer was observed in population-based studies and north China among smokers (OR = 1.65, 95%CI = 1.03-2.66; OR = 2.00, 95% CI = 1.14-3.53). Our meta-analysis showed that there was an interaction between the CYP1A1 MspI and smoking on the risk of lung cancer in the Chinese population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies investigating the relationship between glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) gene deletion polymorphism and lung cancer risk among Chinese population produced inconsistent results. To obtain a precise conclusion, we performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the association between GSTT1 deletion polymorphism and lung cancer risk among Chinese population. METHODS The databases of Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Wanfang Med Online, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched. The strength of the association was assessed by odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). RESULTS Overall, we found an increased lung cancer risk among subjects carrying GSTT1 null genotype compared with those carrying present genotype (OR =1.31, 95% CI: 1.12-1.52) on the basis of 20 studies with 3,351 cases and 4,683 controls. We also observed an increased risk of lung cancer among subjects carrying GSTT1 null genotype compared with those carrying present genotype in stratified analyses (OR =1.31, 95% CI: 1.11-1.55 for healthy subjects-based control; OR =2.29, 95% CI: 1.84-2.85 for squamous cell carcinoma and OR =1.47, 95% CI: 1.22-1.77 for adenocarcinoma, respectively). CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggested that GSTT1 deletion polymorphism might contribute to lung cancer risk among Chinese population.

Abstract
PURPOSE To explore associations of CYP2E1 and NAT2 polymorphisms with lung cancer susceptibility among Mongolian and Han populations in the Inner Mongolian region. MATERIALS AND METHODS CYP2E1 and NAT2 polymorphisms were detected by PCR-RFLP in 930 lung cancer patients and 1000 controls. RESULTS (1) Disequilibrium of the distribution of NAT2 polymorphism was found in lung cancer patients among Han and Mongolian populations (p=0.031). (2) Lung cancer risk was higher in individuals with c1, D allele of CYP2E1 RsaI/PstI, DraI polymorphisms and slow acetylation of NAT2 (c1 compared with c2, OR=1.382, 95%CI: 1.178- 1.587, p=0.003; D compared with C, OR=1.241, 95%CI: 1.053-1.419, P<0.001; slow acetylation compared with rapid acetylation, OR=1.359, 95%CI:1.042-1.768, p=0.056) (3) Compared with c2/c2 and rapid acetylation, c1/c1 together with slow acetylation synergetically increased risk of lung cancer 2.83 fold. (4) Smokers with CYP2E1 c1/c1, DD, and NAT2 slow acetylation have 2.365, 1.916, 1.841 fold lung cancer risk than others with c2/c2, CC and NAT2 rapid acetylation, respectively. (5) Han smokers with NAT2 slow acetylation have 1.974 fold lung cancer risk than others with rapid acetylation. CONCLUSIONS Disequilibrium distribution of NAT2 polymorphism was found in lung cancer patients among Han and Mongolian populations. Besides, Han smokers with NAT2 slow acetylation may have higher lung cancer risk compared with rapid acetylation couterparts. CYP2E1 c1/ c1, DD and NAT2 slow acetylation, especially combined with smoking, contributes to the development of lung cancer. CYP2E1 c1/c1 or DD genotype and NAT2 slow acetylation have strong synergistic action in increasing lung cancer risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although many epidemiologic studies have investigated the cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) exon 7 gene polymorphism and its association with lung cancer (LC), definitive conclusions cannot be drawn. OBJECTIVE To clarify the effects of CYP1A1 exon 7 polymorphism on the risk of LC, an updated meta-analysis was performed in the Chinese population. METHODS Related studies were identified from PubMed, Springer Link, Ovid, the Chinese Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and the Chinese Biology Medicine (CBM) databases until October 2014. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of the associations. RESULTS A total of 25 articles including 3,540 LC cases and 5,284 controls were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, significant association was found between CYP1A1 exon 7 polymorphism and LC risk when all studies in the Chinese population were pooled into this meta-analysis (GG versus AA: OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.46-2.01; GG versus AG: OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.21-1.64; GG + AG versus AA: OR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.16-1.62; GG versus AA + AG: OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.32-1.76). In subgroup analyses stratified by ethnicity, source of controls, and geographical locations, significantly increased risk was found in Chinese Han people, in population-based studies, in hospital-based studies, in South China, and in North China. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis provides the evidence that CYP1A1 exon 7 polymorphism may contribute to LC development in the Chinese population, and studies with a larger sample size and wider population spectrum are warranted to verify this finding.

Abstract
Previous studies have reported the association of glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) deletion polymorphism with genetic susceptibility of lung cancer in Chinese population. However, the results remained controversial. The aim of this study was to clarify the association of GSTM1 deletion polymorphism with lung cancer risk in Chinese population. Systematic searches were performed through the search engines of Medline/Pubmed, Web of Science, EMBASE, CNKI and Wanfang Medical Online. The pooled effects were calculated by STATA 10.0 software package and Review Manager 5.0.24. Overall, we observed an association of GSTM1 deletion polymorphism with increased lung cancer risk in Chinese population (odds ratio (OR) = 1.46, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.32-1.66 for null genotype vs. present genotype) based on 53 studies including 7,833 cases and 10,353 controls. We also observed an increased risk of GSTM1 null genotype for lung cancer in stratified analyses by source of control, smoking status and histological type. The findings suggest that GSTM1 deletion polymorphism may contribute to lung cancer risk in Chinese population. Further, well-designed studies with larger sample sizes are required to verify the results.
