Kidney cancer in Lebanon: a specific histological distribution?

Kidney cancer trends and risk factors in Lebanon: a 12-year epidemiological study

PURPOSE

Lebanon has witnessed an increase in the rates of several cancer subtypes over the last years. The aim of this study is to examine the incidence rates of kidney cancer in Lebanon over 12 years and to compare them to other countries.

METHODS

Data were collected from the Lebanese National Cancer Registry (NCR) for the time period 2005-2016 (inclusive). Data from other countries were retrieved from an online database "Cancer Incidence in Five Continents." The age specific and age-standardized rates (ASR) were calculated and analyzed using Joinpoint regression.

RESULTS

Kidney cancer ranked as the 10th commonest cancer among men and the 19th among women. An age-standardized rate of 3.54 (per 100,000) was obtained. The average ASR was 4.80 for men and 2.27 for women. Kidney cancer showed a significantly rising trend for both genders. Lebanon had the highest ASR for kidney cancer in men and the third highest in women among regional countries.

CONCLUSION

Lebanon presented an average-to-high ASR for kidney cancer compared to regional countries. However, compared to countries worldwide, Lebanon had a below-average ASR. Nonetheless, with the rising kidney cancer trends, it is important to study the associated risk factors in order to develop proper preventive and screening measures and therefore decrease the incidence rates.

Prevalence of Renal Cell Carcinoma in Samples Sent to the Pathology Department of Kabul University of Medical Sciences and City Medical Laboratory

Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common malignant tumor of the kidney. This tumor originates from the epithelial cells of the renal tubules and is located mainly in the cortical region of the kidney. It constitutes approximately 90% of all kidney malignancies and 2% of all cancers in adults. Objectives: The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of RCC and its histological subtypes in samples sent to the Pathology Department of Kabul University of Medical Sciences and City Laboratory. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of 81 nephrectomy and partial nephrectomy samples registered in the laboratory of the Pathology Department of Kabul University of Medical Sciences and City Medical laboratory database from March 2016 to August 2020. Results: A total of 81 samples were included in this study. The mean and standard deviation (SD) age of the patients was 44.4 ± 20.5. Of 81 samples, 62 (76.6%) were malignant kidney tumors, 13 (16.0%) were inflammatory kidney disease, 4 (4.9%) were polycystic kidney disease, and 2 (2.5%) were benign kidney tumors. Among 62 cases of malignant kidney tumor, 53 (85.48%) were RCC. The high incidence of RCC was in the age group of 56 to 65 years with a mean of 52.2 years; 56.60% of RCC cases were male and 43.39% were female. Based on the histological studies, 75.47% were clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) type, followed by 18.86% papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC), and 6% chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (ChRCC). Conclusions: Most common malignant tumor of the kidney in the samples included in this study was RCC in the age group of 56 to 65 years and it was more frequent among men compared to women, whereas the most common histological subtype was ccRCC. The findings are in concordance with international literature.

Clinicopathologic Patterns of Adult Renal Tumors

Background and Aim:

Adult renal tumors (ARTs) are rare as compared with tumors of other organs and systems; however, it is important to have demographic and pathology data of rare tumors, including ART. No such data are available from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Therefore, we aimed to study the demographic and pathological data of ART from King Fahad Hospital, Al-Madinah, KSA.

Materials and Methods:

This is a retrospective study of computerized data from the histopathology laboratory of King Fahad Hospital during a 10-year period (January 2006–September 2015).

Results:

There were 42 cases of ART, comprising 28 males and 14 females (male:female ratio of 2:1). The study group ranged in age from 17 to 83 years, with a mean of 54.5 years. In the study cohort, 93% of the patients had malignant tumors and 7% had benign lesions. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounted for 85.8% of cases, followed by squamous cell carcinoma and sarcoma. The benign tumors recorded in our series were oncocytoma (4.7%) and angiomyolipoma (2.4%). The tumor size of RCC ranged from 4 to 17 cm, with a mean of 7.4 cm. The majority of patients (68%) had Fuhrman Grade II tumor. Gross capsular invasion, renal vein invasion and lymph node metastases were present in one case each.

Conclusion:

We conclude that the pathological findings of ART from the Madinah region are in concordance with studies in national and international literature.

Epidemiology and Trends in Incidence of Kidney Cancer in Iran

BACKGROUND

Kidney cancer has shown an increasing trend in recent decades. This study aimed to determine change in the incidence rate between 2003 and 2009 in Iran.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this study, national cancer registry data were used. Crude incidence rates were calculated per 100,000 and age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) were computed using the direct standardization method and the world standard population. Significant trend of incidence rates was examined by the Cochran-Armitage test for linear trend.

RESULTS

A total of 6,944 cases of kidney cancer were reported. The incidence cases increased from 595 patients in 2003 to 1,387 patients in 2009. Sex ratio (male to female) was 1.67. ASR also increased from 1.18 in 2003 to 2.52 in 2009 per 100,000, but the increasing trend was not significant.

CONCLUSIONS

A slow increasing trend of incidence rate was observed in the study population. This may be due to an increase of risk factors. It is suggested to perform a study on risk factors for the cancer.
