Infective endocarditis after transrectal prostatic biopsy

We report the first case of infective endocarditis secondary to transrectal prostatic biopsy, occurring 2 weeks later in a patient with no obvious risk factors. Enterococcus faecalis was isolated in blood and urine cultures. This case suggests that infective endocarditis can be associated with transrectal procedures.

Acute bacterial endocarditis secondary to transrectal ultrasound-guided prostatic biopsy

We report the first case of a patient with no history of diabetes or cardiac problems who developed an endocarditis secondary to a transrectal prostatic biopsy. Urinalysis prior to the biopsy was normal and the patient had a course of ciprofloxacin 2 hours preoperatively.

Risks and complications of transrectal ultrasound

Transrectal ultrasound guided needle biopsies of the prostate are routinely performed to diagnose and stage prostate cancer. This diagnostic technique is a safe method to diagnose prostate cancer with few major complications but frequent minor complications.
