The "serpent sign"-A classical sign in a nonclassical location: A case report of breast hydatid cyst

Hydatid cyst is a rare breast pathology; however, it should be included in the differential diagnosis of any breast mass. The history and imaging findings can sometimes raise suspicion of the hydatid nature of the mass. The presence of certain imaging signs specific to hydatid cysts can further indicate this diagnosis. Nevertheless, the definitive diagnosis remains histological, and the treatment is principally surgical. Herein, we present a case of a 38-year-old female who was found to have the "serpent sign" on ultrasonography, which is pathognomonic for ruptured hydatid cysts, as part of the imaging workup for a left breast lump. This case report underscores the importance of characteristic imaging features such as the "serpent sign" in the diagnosis of hydatid disease, especially in unusual sites like the breast where the index of suspicion is particularly low. Recognition of such signs elicits special pre- and intraoperative precautions to minimize complications like local dissemination and anaphylactic shock.

Isolated breast hydatid cyst: Imaging features

Hydatid cyst (HC) of the breast is a rare entity, even in endemic areas. We report the radiologic features of an isolated breast HC in a 50‐year‐old woman. Imaging findings may mimic other common breast lesions, but specific imaging features help establish an accurate diagnosis to adapt therapeutic management.

Although very rare, hydatid cyst of the breast should be included in differential diagnosis of breast lumps, especially for patients living in endemic areas. Imaging findings are essential to evoke this potentially serious breast disease in order to adapt therapeutic management.

Sonographic diagnosis of primary hydatid disease in the breast: the scroll sign

Primary hydatid disease of breast is a rare entity and is caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The disease is more commonly seen in sheep-rearing populations and imaging plays a pivotal role in its diagnosis. Several imaging signs have been described in relation to hydatid cysts. However, the "scroll sign," due to the infolding of the endocyst, has rarely been encountered, with only one similar case in literature, in which the imaging findings were inconclusive. We present a case of primary hydatid disease of breast in a young Asian woman, with the sonographic scroll sign.

Imaging of ruptured endocyst in an isolated intramuscular hydatid cyst--the Scroll appearance

The present article reports a case of a 21 years male that was diagnosed to have isolated intramuscular hydatid cyst of the biceps brachii on Ultrasound and MRI. The 'Scroll appearance' of the ruptured endocyst in this case is likely to be an intervening transient stage in evolution of the disease and also indicates recent rupture of the endocyst.

Preoperative diagnosis of a breast hydatid cyst using fine-needle aspiration cytology: a case report and review of the literature

Introduction

A hydatid cyst of the breast is rare and often goes unnoticed by mammography and ultrasound. Preoperative diagnosis may be performed using fine-needle aspiration cytology, which also minimizes the risk of intraoperative rupture.

Case presentation

We report the case of a 70-year-old Spanish woman who was diagnosed with a hydatid cyst using fine-needle aspiration cytology before surgery.

Conclusion

Fine-needle aspiration cytology is an accurate and safe technique that can allow surgery to be avoided, especially in older patients or patients with high surgical risk.

Hydatid cysts in breast: mammography and ultrasound findings

A case of a 48-year-old woman with hydatid disease of the breast is presented. The ultrasound and mammogram findings are shown and an uncommon ultrasound appearance of hydatid cyst in the breast is discussed.
