Abstract
In this review, we intend to summarize the most important discoveries in the deborylative (thio-/seleno-) cyanation of aryl boronic acids from 2006 to the end of 2023. Thus, the review is divided into three parts. The first section focuses exclusively on cyanation of aryl boronic acids into aryl nitriles. The second section covers the available literature on the synthesis of aryl thiocyanates through thiocyanation of respective aryl boronic acids. The third will discuss selenocyanation of aryl boronic acids into aryl selenocyanates.

Abstract
We developed an atom- and reaction mass efficient strategy for the preparation of diarylselenides using iodonium salts as reactants. The developed approach allows the obtaining of diarylselenides from the corresponding trimethoxyphenyl-substituted iodonium salts via a two-step one-pot reaction sequence. The proposed metal-free methodology is based on the involvement of both iodonium aryl groups for diarylation.

Abstract
Herein, we report an efficient method for synthesis of novel selenocyanates of amino pyrazole, amino uracil, and amino isoxazole derivatives using in situ triselenium dicyanide from the combination of malononitrile and selenium dioxide in DMSO medium. Using the same combination but changing the stoichiometry of reagents and sequence of addition and temperature, symmetrical selenoethers of amino pyrazoles and amino uracils were prepared in good yields. Furthermore, selenocyanates of amino pyrazoles were utilized for the synthesis of corresponding alkynyl selenides in the presence of CuI and Cs2CO3. The salient features of this methodology are inexpensive starting materials, short reaction time, and good to very good yields. This method is also applicable for the gram-scale synthesis of selenocyanates of amino pyrazoles and amino uracils.

Abstract
A simple and efficient method for the regioselective selenation of electron-rich arenes by employing non-metal inorganic iodine pentoxide (I2O5) as a reaction promoter under ambient conditions has been developed. The present protocol showed broad functional group tolerance and easy-to-operate and time-economical features. Additionally, this protocol also allows access to 3-seleno and 3-thiocyanoindoles by the use of readily available selenocyanate and thiocyanate salts. A mechanistic study indicated that the transformation operated through selenenyl iodide-induced electrophilic substitution processes.

Abstract
The construction of 2-amino-1,3-selenazole skeleton was realized via the PhICl2/KSeCN-enabled electrophilic selenocyanation of β-enaminones and β-enamino esters followed by intramolecular cyclization under basic conditions. Compared to the classical Hantzsch strategy that utilizes selenourea or its analogues as starting materials or crucial intermediates, this method might represent an alternative approach for the assembly of 1,3-selenazole framework through a different pathway.

Abstract
N-selenoethyl cysteine (SetCys) in the form of its cyclic selenosulfide is a cysteine surrogate, whose reactivity depends on the reducing power of the medium. SetCys does not interfere with the native chemical ligation reaction under mild reducing conditions, that is in the absence of tris(2-carboxyethyl)phosphine (TCEP). In contrast, subjecting SetCys to TCEP results in the spontaneous loss of its N-selenoethyl appendage and thus to its conversion into a Cys residue. Therefore, SetCys can be used for the redox-controlled assembly of peptide segments using NCL. We provide in this protocol detailed procedures for the synthesis of Fmoc-protected SetCys residue and for its incorporation into peptides using standard solid-phase peptide synthesis protocols. We also describe its use for the chemical synthesis of proteins through the redox-controlled assembly of three peptide segments in one-pot.

Abstract
Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are cost-effective photocatalysts in organic transformations, while they are usually limited by the insufficient separation of photogenerated charges. Here we report a polarization strategy through molecular geometry optimization to promote the charge separation of CMPs. Three CMP photocatalysts with an alternative donor-acceptor skeleton and tunable symmetry were synthesized by the oxidative coupling of bis-carbazoles with electron-deficient bridges (benzene/pyridine/pyrimidine). Simply regulating the polarization of the starting monomers leads to tailorable porosity, photoelectric properties, and photocatalytic activity of the CMPs. They exhibited high efficiency in C-3 selenocyanation of indoles under visible-light and at room temperature, and pyridine-based CMPs with the largest dipole moment gave a yield of up to 94%, superior to their state-of-the-art photocatalyst counterparts. Photo-physical experiments combined with theoretical calculations further supported that the incorporation of the polarized linker introduced an internal electric field, benefitting efficient charge separation. This offered new insight into developing high-performance photocatalysts.

Abstract
While thiol-based catalysts are widely employed for chemical protein synthesis relying on peptide thioester chemistry, this is less true for selenol-based catalysts whose development is in its infancy. In this study, we compared different selenols derived from the selenocysteamine scaffold for their capacity to promote thiol-thioester exchanges in water at mildly acidic pH and the production of peptide thioesters from bis(2-sulfanylethyl)amido (SEA) peptides. The usefulness of a selected selenol compound is illustrated by the total synthesis of a biologically active human chemotactic protein, which plays an important role in innate and adaptive immunity.

Abstract
A practical synthesis of 28a-homo-28a-selenolupane triterpenes and the corresponding selenosaponins containing d-mannose, l-arabinose, l-rhamnose, and d-idose moieties is described. Selenium containing triterpenes were obtained from the readily available 3-O-allyl-homobetulin mesylate by nucleophilic substitution with the selenocyanate ion which upon reduction of the -SeCN group afforded the free selenol. Glycosylation using classical Schmidt donors gave 1,2-trans selenosaponins as the main product as well as minute amounts of 1,2-cis isomers. This is one of the very few examples of the synthesis of selenoglycosides by direct glycosylation of free selenols. The studied selenol showed high resistance to air oxidation resulting in good stability during the synthesis of selenolupane derivatives. Cytotoxic activities of new homoselenolupane derivatives were also evaluated in vitro and revealed that some triterpenes exhibited an interesting profile against human cancer cell lines.

Abstract
Building on our recent disclosure of catalysis at dinuclear Pd(I) sites, we herein report the application of this concept to the realization of the first catalytic method to convert aryl iodides into the corresponding ArSeCF3 compounds. Highly efficient C-SeCF3 coupling of a range of aryl iodides was achieved, enabled by an air-, moisture-, and thermally stable dinuclear Pd(I) catalyst. The novel SeCF3 -bridged dinuclear Pd(I) complex 3 was isolated, studied for its catalytic competence and shown to be recoverable. Experimental and computational data are presented in support of dinuclear Pd(I) catalysis.

Abstract
Reaction of potassium 1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-selenolate (I) with acetylated ribose/deoxyribose (IIa,b) in the presence of montmorillonite K 10 as a solid adsorbent furnished potassium 1-acetylated ribosyl/deoxyribosyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-selenolate (IIIa,b) with excellent yield under microwave irradiation in solvent-free conditions. This eliminates a series of complex isolation procedures and often minimizes the use of a large amount of expensive, toxic, and hazardous solvents after each step. This procedure reduces reaction time and cost and enhances yield. Reaction of compound (IIIa,b) with substituted/unsubstituted aryl diazonium chloride (IVa-e) at 0-5 °C gave pure 3-(substituted/unsubstituted phenyl selanyl)-1-acetylribosyl/deoxyribosyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole (Va-j). Oxidation of compound (Va-j) with oxone followed by alkaline hydrolysis furnished quantitatively and analytically pure 3-(substituted/unsubstituted phenylselenonyl)-1-ribosyl/deoxyribosyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole (VIIa-j). Compounds VIa-j and VIIa-j were evaluated in vitro for their fungitoxicities against Fusarium oxysporum and Penicillium citrinum. All the compounds were found to be antifungal active. Some of the compounds displayed activities comparable with that of the commercial fungicide Dithane M-45 and griseofulvin. Structure-activity relationships for the screened compounds were discussed. The fact that both of these fungi have developed resistance to several fungicide groups made them optimal candidates as target organisms for ongoing research about the potential application of 1,2,4-triazole and analogue compounds as reduced-risk fungicides.

An efficient method for the synthesis of symmetrical diselenides is described. Reductive selenation of aromatic and heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes (ArCHO) with Se/CO/H(2)O in DMF afforded diselenides (ArCH(2)SeSeCH(2)Ar) in yields up to 94% under atmospheric pressure without use of a base.

Abstract
Thioimidoyl radicals were generated by addition of alkylsulfanyl radicals to alkyl isonitriles and were characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The beta-scissions of their C.S-C bonds were studied by variable-temperature EPR spectroscopy and the fragmentation rate constants and activation energies were calculated. The scission rates depend on the stability of the released alkyl radicals but in any case, at room temperature, the processes were fast. Data collected on similar oxyimidoyls showed that their fragmentations are slightly slower compared to those of analogous thioimidoyls. The scission rates of selenoimidoyls could not be studied by EPR and were evaluated by theoretical calculations. EPR experiments also enabled both beta-scission and 5-exo ring closure rate constants of two S-but-3-enyl-substituted imidoyl radicals to be determined, showing that cyclization prevails only at low temperatures. Density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculations predicted that the fragmentation process preferentially occurs from the s-cis rotamers (X-C bond) of the imidoyl radicals. Thio- and seleno-imidoyls (but not oxyimidoyls) prefer s-trans conformations so that their fragmentations involve prior rotation about the X-C bond.

Abstract
New potential cancer-driven as well as HIV-driven nucleoside heteroanalogs, such as 3'-thio- and 3'- as well as 5'-selenosubstituted thymidines, have been synthesized. We also report an effective method for the preparation of novel nucleoside derivatives, bis(deoxynucleoside) diselenides, in nearly quantitative yields. The North conformation is significantly populated in the conformational equilibrium for 3'-alpha-alkylthiothymidines.
