A 3d-4d-5d High Entropy Alloy as a Bifunctional Oxygen Catalyst for Robust Aqueous Zinc-Air Batteries

Unique Hierarchically Structured High-Entropy Alloys with Multiple Adsorption Sites for Rechargeable Li-CO2 Batteries with High Capacity

Lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries offer the possibility of synchronous implementation of carbon neutrality and the development of advanced energy storage devices. The exploration of low-cost and efficient cathode catalysts is key to the improvement of Li-CO2 batteries. Herein, high-entropy alloys (HEAs)@C hierarchical nanosheet is synthesized from the simulation of the recycling solution of waste batteries to construct a cathode for the first time. Owing to the excellent electrical conductivity of the carbon material, the unique high-entropy effect of the HEAs, and the large number of catalytically active sites exposed by the hierarchical structure, the FeCoNiMnCuAl@C-based battery exhibits a superior discharge capability of 27664 mAh g-1 and outstanding durability of 134 cycles as well as low overpotential with 1.05 V at a discharge/recharge rate of 100 mA g-1. The adsorption capacity of different sites on the HEAs is deeply understood through density functional theory calculations combined with experiments. This work opens up the application of HEAs in Li-CO2 batteries catalytic cathodes and provides unique insights into the study of adsorption active sites in HEAs.

Regulating Hydrogen/Oxygen Species Adsorption via Built-in Electric Field -Driven Electron Transfer Behavior at the Heterointerface for Efficient Water Splitting

Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) plays a crucial role in the realization of a hydrogen economy. The design and development of efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are pivotal to achieving high-efficiency AWE. Herein, WC1-x/Mo2C nanoparticle-embedded carbon nanofiber (WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF) with abundant interfaces is successfully designed and synthesized. Benefiting from the electron transfer behavior from Mo2C to WC1-x, the electrocatalysts of WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF exhibit superior HER and OER performance. Furthermore, when employed as anode and cathode in membrane electrode assembly devices, the WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF catalyst exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and remarkable stability for 100 hours at a high current density of 200 mA cm-2 towards overall water splitting. The experimental characterizations and theoretical simulation reveal that modulation of the d-band center for WC1-x/Mo2C@CNF, achieved through the asymmetric charge distribution resulting from the built-in electric field induced by work function, enables optimization of adsorption strength for hydrogen/oxygen intermediates, thereby promoting the catalytic kinetics for overall water splitting. This work provides promising strategies for designing highly active catalysts in energy conversion fields.

Blocking Metal Nanocluster Growth through Ligand Coordination and Subsequent Polymerization: The Case of Ruthenium Nanoclusters as Robust Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Metal nanoclusters providing maximized atomic surface exposure offer outstanding hydrogen evolution activities but their stability is compromised as they are prone to grow and agglomerate. Herein, a possibility of blocking metal ion diffusion at the core of cluster growth and aggregation to produce highly active Ru nanoclusters supported on an N, S co-doped carbon matrix (Ru/NSC) is demonstrated. To stabilize the nanocluster dispersion, Ru species are initially coordinated through multiple Ru─N bonds with N-rich 4'-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2:6',2''-terpyridine (TPY-NH2 ) ligands that are subsequently polymerized using a Schiff base. After the pyrolysis of the hybrid composite, highly dispersed ultrafine Ru nanoclusters with an average size of 1.55 nm are obtained. The optimized Ru/NSC displays minimal overpotentials and high turnover frequencies, as well as robust durability both in alkaline and acidic electrolytes. Besides, outstanding mass activities of 3.85 A mg-1 Ru at 50 mV, i.e., 16 fold higher than 20 wt.% Pt/C are reached. Density functional theory calculations rationalize the outstanding performance by revealing that the low d-band center of Ru/NSC allows the desorption of *H intermediates, thereby enhancing the alkaline HER activity. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach to engineering cost-effective and robust electrocatalysts based on carbon-supported transition metal nanoclusters for future energy technologies.

FeNiCo|MnGaOx Heterostructure Nanoparticles as Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Zn-Air Batteries

Driven by the pressing demand for stable energy systems, zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have emerged as crucial energy storage solutions. However, the quest for cost-effective catalysts to enhance vital oxygen evolution and reduction reactions remains challenging. FeNiCo|MnGaOx heterostructure nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are synthesized using liquid-phase reduction and H2 calcination approach. Compared to its component, such FeNiCo|MnGaOx /CNT shows a high synergistic effect, low impedance, and modulated electronic structure, leading to a superior bifunctional catalytic performance with an overpotential of 255 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and half-wave potential of 0.824 V (ω = 1600 rpm and 0.1 m KOH electrolyte). Moreover, ZABs based on FeNiCo|MnGaOx /CNT demonstrate notable features, including a peak power density of 136.1 mW cm-2 , a high specific capacity of 808.3 mAh gZn -1 , and outstanding stability throughout >158 h of uninterrupted charge-discharge cycling. Theoretical calculations reveal that the non-homogeneous interface can introduce more carriers and altered electronic structures to refine intermediate adsorption reactions, especially promoting O* formation, thereby enhancing electrocatalytic performance. This work demonstrates the importance of heterostructure interfacial modulation of electronic structure and enhancement of adsorption capacity in promoting the implementation of OER/ORR, ZABs, and related applications.

Modulating Electronic Structure and Atomic Insights into the Novel Hierarchically Porous PdCuFe Trimetallic Alloy Aerogel for Efficient Oxygen Reduction

The high cost of noble Pd/Pt required for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathode restricts the wide applications of fuel cells. In this study, the synthesis of a novel Pd3 CuFe0.5 aerogel electrocatalyst is successfully demonstrated using self-assembly and lyophilization techniques, employing a mild reducing agent. The resulting aerogel electrocatalyst exhibits a distinctive 3D network structure, possessing a substantial BET-specific surface area of 75.19 m2  g-1 . It is worth noting that the optimized Pd3 CuFe0.5 aerogel demonstrates exceptional ORR performance with a high half-wave potential of 0.92 V versus RHE, a significant limiting current density of 7.6 mA cm-2 , and the excellent electrocatalytic stability, superior to the reported noble metal electrocatalysts, with the ORR activity decays only 4.9% after 16 000 s. In addition, the Pd3 CuFe0.5 aerogel electrocatalyst shows superior cycling stability for ≈120 h at a charge/discharge current density of 10 mA cm-2 , indicating its promising application in fuel cells. Furthermore, the resulting composite aerogel possesses excellent hydrogen evolution reaction and ethanol oxidation reaction activity. The density functional theory calculations show that the partial oxidation of Pd3 CuFe0.5 aerogel leads to a negative shift of the d-band center, which energetically optimizes the binding strength of *O intermediates, therefore accelerating the ORR activity.

Identifying the Role of the Cationic Geometric Configuration in Spinel Catalysts for Polysulfide Conversion in Sodium-Sulfur Batteries

An AB2X4 spinel structure, with tetrahedral A and octahedral B sites, is a paradigmatic class of catalysts with several possible geometric configurations and numerous applications, including polysulfide conversion in metal-sulfur batteries. Nonetheless, the influence of the geometric configuration and composition on the mechanisms of catalysis and the precise manner in which spinel catalysts facilitate the conversion of polysulfides remain unknown. To enable controlled exposure of single active configurations, herein, Cotd2+ and Cooh3+ in Co3O4 catalysts for sodium polysulfide conversion are in large part replaced by Fetd2+ and Feoh3+, respectively, generating FeCo2O4 and CoFe2O4. Through an examination of electrochemical activation energies, the characterization of symmetric cells, and theoretical calculations, we determine that Cooh3+ serves as the active site for the breaking of S-S bonds, while Cotd2+ functions as the active site for the formation of S-Na bonds. The current study underlines the subtle relationship between activity and geometric configurations of spinel catalysts, providing unique insights for the rational development of improved catalysts by optimizing their atomic geometric configuration.
