Direct Visualization of Pyrrole Reactivity upon Confinement within a Cyclodextrin Metal–Organic Framework

2D Graphene Oxide Membrane Nanoreactors for Rapid Directional Flow Ring-Opening Reactions with Dominant Same-Configuration Products

Nanoconfinement within enzymes can increase reaction rate and improve selectivity under mild conditions. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve chemical reactions imitating enzymes with directional molecular motion, short reaction time, ≈100% conversion, and chiral conversion in artificial nanoconfined systems. Here, directional flow ring-opening reactions of styrene oxide and alcohols are demonstrated with ≈100% conversion in <120 s at 22 °C using graphene oxide membrane nanoreactors. Dominant products have the same configuration as chiral styrene oxide in confined reactions, which is dramatically opposed to bulk reactions. The unique chiral conversion mechanism is caused by spatial confinement, limiting the inversion of benzylic chiral carbon. Moreover, the enantiomeric excess of same-configuration products increased with higher alkyl charge in confined reactions. This work provides a new route to achieve rapid flow ring-opening reactions with specific chiral conversion within 2D nanoconfined channels, and insights into the impact of nanoconfinement on ring-opening reaction mechanisms.

Organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical metal-organic frameworks and cages: design, structures, and applications

Developing hierarchical ordered systems is challenging. Using organo-macrocycles to construct metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous coordination cages (PCCs) provides an efficient way to obtain hierarchical assemblies. Macrocycles, such as crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, cucurbiturils, and pillararenes, can be incorporated within MOFs/PCCs and they also endow the resultant composites with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent developments of organo-macrocycle-containing hierarchical MOFs/PCCs, emphasizing applications and structure-property relationships of these hierarchically porous materials. This review provides insights for future research on hierarchical self-assembly using macrocycles as building blocks and functional ligands to extend the applications of the composites.

Helically Chiral Hybrid Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Framework Exhibiting Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Three achiral polycyclic aromatic fluorophores─namely, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid, and perylene-3,9-dicarboxylic acid─were chosen based on their desired properties before being incorporated into the construction of a K⁺-carrying gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD)-based metal-organic framework (CD-MOF-1) and γ-CD-containing hybrid frameworks (CD-HFs). Among these fluorophores, only the pyrene-carrying one shows significant noncovalent bonding interactions with γ-CD in solution. This fluorophore is encapsulated in a CD-HF with a trigonal superstructure instead of the common cubic CD-MOF-1 found in the case of the other two fluorophores. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of the trigonal CD-HF reveals a π-stacked chiral positioning of the pyrene-carrying fluorophore inside the (γ-CD)₂ tunnels and held uniformly around an enantiomorphous 3₂ screw axis along the c direction in the solid-state structure. This helix-like structure demonstrates an additional level of chirality over and above the point-chiral stereogenic centers of γ-CD and the axial chirality associated with the self-assembled π-stacked fluorophores. These arrangements result in specifically generated photophysical and chiroptical properties, such as the controlled emergence of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) emission. In this manner, a complete understanding of the mechanism of chirality transfer from a chiral host (CD-HF) to an encapsulated achiral fluorophore has been achieved, an attribute which is often missing in the development of materials with CPL.

A Biocompatible Aspartic-Decorated Metal-Organic Framework with Tubular Motif Degradable under Physiological Conditions

Achieving a precise control of the final structure of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is necessary to obtain desired physical properties. Here, we describe how the use of a metalloligand design strategy and a judicious choice of ligands inspired from nature is a versatile approach to succeed in this challenging task. We report a new porous chiral MOF, with the formula Ca5II{CuII10[(S,S)-aspartamox]5}·160H2O (1), constructed from Cu2+ and Ca2+ ions and aspartic acid-decorated ligands, where biometal Cu2+ ions are bridged by the carboxylate groups of aspartic acid moieties. The structure of MOF 1 reveals an infinite network of basket-like cages, built by 10 crystallographically distinct Cu(II) metal ions and five aspartamox ligands acting as bricks of a tubular motif, composed of seven basket-like cages each. The pillared hepta-packed cages generate pseudo-rhombohedral nanosized channels of ca. 0.7 and 0.4 nm along the b and a crystallographic axes. This intricate porous 3D network is anionic and chiral, each cage displaying receptor properties toward three-nuclear [Ca3(μ-H2O)4(H2O)17]6+ entities. 1 represents the first example of an extended porous structure based on essential biometals Cu2+ and Ca2+ ions together with aspartic acid as amino acid. 1 shows good biocompatibility, making it a good candidate to be used as a drug carrier, and hydrolyzes in acid water. The hypothesis has been further supported by an adsorption experiment here reported, as a proof-of-principle study, using dopamine hydrochloride as a model drug to follow the encapsulation process. Results validate the potential ability of 1 to act as a drug carrier. Thus, these make this MOF one of the few examples of biocompatible and degradable porous solid carriers for eventual release of drugs in the stomach stimulated by gastric low pH.

Cyclodextrin Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Applications

Cyclodextrin-based metal-organic frameworks (CD-MOFs), derived from γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and alkali metal cations, constitute a class of porous, renewable, and edible MOFs that can be synthesized from a naturally occurring carbohydrate on a large scale. γ-CD is a C₈-symmetrical cyclic oligosaccharide composed of eight asymmetric α-1,4-linked d-glucopyranosyl residues that possesses a bucket-shaped cavity with an inner diameter of ∼1 nm and a depth of ∼0.8 nm. Upon combination of 1 equiv of γ-CD with 8 equiv of potassium hydroxide in an aqueous solution, followed by vapor diffusion of MeOH (or EtOH) into this solution during several days, CD-MOF-1 is obtained as cubic crystals. This carbohydrate-based MOF, which was discovered serendipitously in 2010, was the first highly crystalline CD-MOF to be obtained. X-ray crystallography of a single crystal reveals that it adopts the space group I432 with unit cell dimensions of approximately 31 × 31 × 31 ų. Other CD-MOFs, namely, CD-MOF-2 and CD-MOF-3, can be obtained when potassium ions are replaced by rubidium and cesium ions, respectively. CD-MOFs comprise extended body-centered frameworks of (γ-CD)₆ cubic units, which contain spherical pores that reside at the center of the cubes, interconnected by alkali metal cations, forming both cylindrical and triangular channels.During the past decade, CD-MOFs have emerged as a useful class of multifunctional materials based on porous frameworks with extended structures displaying robust crystallinity, permanent porosity, and excellent biocompatibility. The family of CD-MOFs has been joined by a growing collection of metal nodes involving alkali metal cations (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Rb⁺, Cs⁺) and γ-CD as well as its derivatives. As a result of the ability of their extended porous frameworks to absorb guest molecules, including gases, drugs, metal-based nanoclusters, and nanoparticles, CD-MOFs have potential applications in areas as disparate as templating syntheses of metal-based nanoparticles and gels, adsorption and separation, trapping highly reactive intermediates, catalyst supports, sensing, electrical memory, and drug delivery.In this Account, we tell the story of CD-MOFs, a scientific discovery made in our research laboratory at Northwestern University, and the opportunities to use these environmentally friendly porous materials across different fields of science and technology. The story includes representative synthetic protocols for the preparation of CD-MOFs, along with an overview of their structural features, functionalization, and chemical modification aimed at increasing their stabilities in aqueous environments, and finally, a summary of their applications. The examples we will discuss, however, are only illustrative, and there is a significant body of additional findings emanating from our laboratory and others, especially in the realm of developing new synthetic strategies, tuning the framework stabilities, and exploring the guest inclusion and emergent properties of CD-MOFs. We refer readers to the original communications, papers, and reviews cited herein. We hope that, in the telling of the story of CD-MOFs, this Account may promote new scientific discoveries and further development of CD-MOF-based technologies in the future.

Elucidating pore chemistry within metal–organic frameworks via single crystal X-ray diffraction; from fundamental understanding to application

The application of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) to diverse chemical sectors is aided by their crystallinity, which permits the use of X-ray crystallography to characterise their pore chemistry and provides invaluable insight into their properties.

Chemical reactivity under nanoconfinement

Confining molecules can fundamentally change their chemical and physical properties. Confinement effects are considered instrumental at various stages of the origins of life, and life continues to rely on layers of compartmentalization to maintain an out-of-equilibrium state and efficiently synthesize complex biomolecules under mild conditions. As interest in synthetic confined systems grows, we are realizing that the principles governing reactivity under confinement are the same in abiological systems as they are in nature. In this Review, we categorize the ways in which nanoconfinement effects impact chemical reactivity in synthetic systems. Under nanoconfinement, chemical properties can be modulated to increase reaction rates, enhance selectivity and stabilize reactive species. Confinement effects also lead to changes in physical properties. The fluorescence of light emitters, the colours of dyes and electronic communication between electroactive species can all be tuned under confinement. Within each of these categories, we elucidate design principles and strategies that are widely applicable across a range of confined systems, specifically highlighting examples of different nanocompartments that influence reactivity in similar ways.

Electrical conductivity and magnetic bistability in metal–organic frameworks and coordination polymers: charge transport and spin crossover at the nanoscale

This review aims to reassess the progress, issues and opportunities in the path towards integrating conductive and magnetically bistable coordination polymers and metal–organic frameworks as active components in electronic devices.

Stepwise Evolution of Molecular Nanoaggregates Inside the Pores of a Highly Flexible Metal-Organic Framework

The crystalline sponge method (CSM) is primarily used for structural determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of a single analyte encapsulated inside a porous MOF. As the host-guest systems often show severe disorder, reliable crystallographic determination is demanding; thus the dynamics of the guest entering and the formation of nanoconfined molecular aggregates has not been in the spotlight. Now, the concept is investigated of the CSM for monitoring the structural evolution of nanoconfined supramolecular aggregates of eugenol guests with displacement of DMF inside the cavities of the flexible MOF, PUM168. The interpretation of the electron density provides a series of unique detailed snapshots depicting the supramolecular guest aggregation, thus showing the tight interplay between the host flexible skeleton and the molecular guests through the DMF-to-eugenol exchange process.
