Boosting CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Monolayer MoS2 Nanotubes by Creating More Strained Basal Planes

The controlled creation, selective exposure, and activation of more basal planes while simultaneously minimizing the generation and exposure of edge sites are crucial for accelerating methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation over MoS2 catalysts but remain a bottleneck. Here, we report a facile method to fabricate heteronanotube catalysts with single-layer MoS2 coaxially encapsulating the carbon nanotubes (CNTs@MoS2) through host-guest chemistry. Inheriting the long tubular structure of CNTs, the grown MoS2 nanotubes exhibit significantly more basal planes than bulk MoS2 crystals. More importantly, the tubular curvature not only promotes strain and sulfur vacancy (Sv) generation but also preferentially exposes more in-plane Sv while limiting edge Sv exposure, which is conducive to methanol synthesis. Both the strain and layer number of MoS2 can be easily and finely adjusted by altering CNT diameter and quantity of precursors. Remarkably, CNTs@MoS2 with monolayer MoS2 and maximum strain displayed methanol selectivity of 78.1% and methanol space time yield of 1.6 g gMoS2-1 h-1 at 260 °C and GHSV of 24000 mL gcat.-1 h-1, representing the best results to date among Mo-based catalysts. This study provides prospects for novel catalyst design by synthesizing coaxial tubular heterostructure to create additional catalytic sites and ultimately enhance conversion and selectivity.

Cu-Modified Palladium Catalysts: Boosting Formate Electrooxidation via Interfacially OHad-Driven Had Removal

Direct formate fuel cells have gained traction due to their eco-friendly credentials and inherent safety. However, their potential is hampered by the kinetic challenges of the formate oxidation reaction (FOR) on Pd-based catalysts, chiefly due to the unfavorable adsorption of hydrogen species (Had). These species clog the active sites, hindering efficient catalysis. Here, we introduce a straightforward strategy to remedy this bottleneck by incorporating Pd with Cu to expedite the removal of Pd-Had in alkaline media. Notably, Cu plays a pivotal role in bolstering the concentration of hydroxyl adsorbates (OHad) on the surface of catalyst. These OHad species can react with Had, effectively unblocking the active sites for FOR. The as-synthesized catalyst of PdCu/C exhibits a superior FOR performance, boasting a remarkable mass activity of 3.62 A mg-1. Through CO-stripping voltammetry, we discern that the presence of Cu in Pd markedly speeds up the formation of adsorbed hydroxyl species (OHad) at diminished potentials. This, in turn, aids the oxidative removal of Pd-Had, leveraging a synergistic mechanism during FOR. Density functional theory computations further reveal intensified interactions between adsorbed oxygen species and intermediates, underscoring that the Cu-Pd interface exhibits greater oxyphilicity compared to pristine Pd. In this study, we present both experimental and theoretical corroborations, unequivocally highlighting that the integrated copper species markedly amplify the generation of OHad, ensuring efficient removal of Had. This work paves the way, shedding light on the strategic design of high-performing FOR catalysts.

Phase-Regulated Active Hydrogen Behavior on Molybdenum Disulfide for Electrochemical Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

Electrochemical reduction of nitrate waste is promising for environmental remediation and ammonia preparation. This process includes multiple hydrogenation steps, and thus the active hydrogen behavior on the surface of the catalyst is crucial. The crystal phase referred to the atomic arrangements in crystals has a great effect on active hydrogen, but the influence of the crystal phase on nitrate reduction is still unclear. Herein, enzyme-mimicking MoS2 in different crystal phases (1T and 2H) are used as models. The Faradaic efficiency of ammonia reaches ≈90 % over 1T-MoS2 , obviously outperforming that of 2H-MoS2 (27.31 %). In situ Raman spectra and theoretical calculations reveal that 1T-MoS2 produces more active hydrogen on edge S sites at a more positive potential and conducts an effortless pathway from nitrate to ammonia instead of multiple energetically demanding hydrogenation steps (such as *HNO to *HNOH) performed on 2H-MoS2 .
