Abstract
The study aimed to use response surface methodology (RSM) to create and understand a novel edible film made from fish gelatin (FG). This film includes wine lees (WL) and carrageenan (CAR). The concentrations of WL (0, 1, 2, and 3 %) and CAR (0, 1, and 3 %) were considered independent variables. The process variable combinations for the optimal response functions were 1.926 % WL and 3 % CAR, forming soft and rigid films with low tensile strength (TS) and high elongation at break (EAB%). Based on the evaluation of each response, FG film had the highest TS value, FG/CAR(3 %) film had the maximum EAB, and FG/WL (3 %)/CAR (3 %) film had the lowest vapor permeability (WVP) and the highest opacity (OP). The incorporation of WL considerably improved the functional properties of these films, enabling strong antioxidant activity and high phenolic content. Characterization of the films with analytical techniques: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrated a considerable interaction between WL and FG, indicating a high level of compatibility between the two substances. Our data suggest that the formulation of edible films can be adjusted to fit the specific requirements of the design.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of incorporating wine lees (WL), an inexpensive and widely available high-value winery waste product, into gelatin-based jellies to improve their technological and functional properties. We also aimed to evaluate the suitability of WL as a jelly colorant by comparing it with a commercial colorant. RESULTS Wine lees were characterized for their anthocyanin, phenolic, antioxidant, and mineral content. Subsequently, physicochemical, functional, textural, rheological, and thermal analyses were conducted on soft candies containing 21, 14, and 7 g kg-1 WL (labeled as WL30, WL20, and WL10, respectively). The total phenolic, anthocyanin, antioxidant, and cupric-reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) values of WL30 were determined as 57.80 ± 6.12 mg gallic acid equivalent per kilogram (GAE kg-1 ), 17.58 ± 0.36 mg malvidin-3-glucoside equivalent kg-1 , 0.04 ± 0.01 μg mL-1 , and 45.55 ± 1.00 mmol L-1 Trolox equivalent (TE), respectively. The control sample had the best rheological characteristics, including K', G', and n*, as well as the greatest hardness value, followed by WL30. However, during the storage period, WL30 exhibited superior color stability and retained higher levels of phenolic and anthocyanin components in comparison with the control sample. CONCLUSION Wine lees have the potential to be utilized as a natural colorant and alternative flavoring agent in jelly production. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
While biomaterials have become indispensable for a wide range of tissue repair strategies, second removal procedures oftentimes needed in the case of non-bio-based and non-bioresorbable scaffolds are associated with significant drawbacks not only for the patient, including the risk of infection, impaired healing, or tissue damage, but also for the healthcare system in terms of cost and resources. New biopolymers are increasingly being investigated in the field of tissue regeneration, but their widespread use is still hampered by limitations regarding mechanical, biological, and functional performance when compared to traditional materials. Therefore, a common strategy to tune and broaden the final properties of biopolymers is through the effect of different reinforcing agents. This research work focused on the fabrication and characterization of a bio-based and bioresorbable composite material obtained by compounding a poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBH) matrix with acetylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The developed biocomposite was further processed to obtain three-dimensional scaffolds by additive manufacturing (AM). The 3D printability of the PHBH-CNC biocomposites was demonstrated by realizing different scaffold geometries, and the results of in vitro cell viability studies provided a clear indication of the cytocompatibility of the biocomposites. Moreover, the CNC content proved to be an important parameter in tuning the different functional properties of the scaffolds. It was demonstrated that the water affinity, surface roughness, and in vitro degradability rate of biocomposites increase with increasing CNC content. Therefore, this tailoring effect of CNC can expand the potential field of use of the PHBH biopolymer, making it an attractive candidate for a variety of tissue engineering applications.

Abstract
Biobased poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) represents one promising sustainable alternative to petroleum-based polymers. Its sensitivity to thermo-oxidative degradation is one reason for its limited application. In this research, two different varieties of wine grape pomaces (WPs) were investigated as fully biobased stabilizers. WPs were prepared via simultaneous drying and grinding to be used as bio-additives or functional fillers at higher filling rates. The by-products were characterized in terms of composition and relative moisture, in addition to particle size distribution analysis, TGA, and assays to determine the total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity. Biobased PBS was processed with a twin-screw compounder with WP contents up to 20 wt.-%. The thermal and mechanical properties of the compounds were investigated with DSC, TGA, and tensile tests using injection-molded specimens. The thermo-oxidative stability was determined using dynamic OIT and oxidative TGA measurements. While the characteristic thermal properties of the materials remained almost unchanged, the mechanical properties were altered within expected ranges. The analysis of the thermo-oxidative stability revealed WP as an efficient stabilizer for biobased PBS. This research shows that WP, as a low-cost and biobased stabilizer, improves the thermo-oxidative stability of biobased PBS while maintaining its key properties for processing and technical applications.

Abstract
In this study, stress-relaxation tests that have been carried out at different temperatures (quite below the heat deflection temperature) on a poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-3hydroxyvalerate) (PHB-HV) matrix containing different amounts of the acetyl tributyl citrate plasticizer (added at 5 and 10 wt %) are investigated. The analytical modeling of the stress relaxation behavior by the coupling of Eyring's approach and the Guiu and Pratt model is successful. The activation volume results achieved are very interesting; in fact, not only the dependence of the activation volume from temperature is confirmed (and it resulted in dependence from the α' relaxation temperature) but also, for the first time, the dependence of the activation volume from the plasticizer content is shown. In particular, the presence of a linear relationship between the activation volume and the plasticizer volume content is observed.

Abstract
Service lifetimes of polymers and polymer composites are impacted by environmental ageing. The validation of new composites and their environmental durability involves costly testing programs, thus calling for more affordable and safe alternatives, and modelling is seen as such an alternative. The state-of-the-art models are systematized in this work. The review offers a comprehensive overview of the modular and multiscale modelling approaches. These approaches provide means to predict the environmental ageing and degradation of polymers and polymer composites. Furthermore, the systematization of methods and models presented herein leads to a deeper and reliable understanding of the physical and chemical principles of environmental ageing. As a result, it provides better confidence in the modelling methods for predicting the environmental durability of polymeric materials and fibre-reinforced composites.

Abstract
The main aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of producing caproic acid and other volatile fatty acids using a co-digestion between cheese whey and sewage sludge in a continuous reactor. The effect of two different feeding regimes (one and two per day) and three hydraulic retention times (HRT) (15, 10 and 6 days) on the organic acids production were studied. The optimal conditions for the process were 10 days HRT, 2 feeding cycles per day, reaching a maximum degree of acidification of 44%. Under these conditions, the most abundant organic acid was caproic acid. The analysis of the microbial community dynamics in the reactor during the HRT changes revealed a microbiome enriched in organisms involved in caproic acid production. Additionally, the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates using the organic acids stream as feeding was verified in a fed-batch experiment obtaining a copolymer formed by hydroxybutyrate, hydroxyvalerate and hydroxyhexanoate.

Abstract
Biodegradable polymers (BP) are often regarded as the materials of the future, which address the rising environmental concerns. The advancement of biorefineries and sustainable technologies has yielded various BP with excellent properties comparable to commodity plastics. Water resistance, high dimensional stability, processability and excellent physicochemical properties limit the reviewed materials to biodegradable polyesters and modified compositions of starch and cellulose, both known for their abundance and relatively low price. The addition of different nanofillers and preparation of polymer nanocomposites can effectively improve BP with controlled functional properties and change the rate of degradation. The lack of data on the durability of biodegradable polymer nanocomposites (BPN) has been the motivation for the current review that summarizes recent literature data on environmental ageing of BPN and the role of nanofillers, their basic engineering properties and potential applications. Various durability tests discussed thermal ageing, photo-oxidative ageing, water absorption, hygrothermal ageing and creep testing. It was discussed that incorporating nanofillers into BP could attenuate the loss of mechanical properties and improve durability. Although, in the case of poor dispersion, the addition of the nanofillers can lead to even faster degradation, depending on the structural integrity and the state of interfacial adhesion. Selected models that describe the durability performance of BPN were considered in the review. These can be applied as a practical tool to design BPN with tailored property degradationand durability.

Abstract
The present work investigated the possibility to use wet blue (WB) leather wastes as natural reinforcing fibers within different polymer matrices. After their preparation and characterization, WB fibers were melt-mixed at 10 wt.% with poly(lactic acid) (PLA), polyamide 12 (PA12), thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and the obtained samples were subjected to rheological, thermal, thermo-mechanical, and viscoelastic analyses. In parallel, morphological properties such as fiber distribution and dispersion, fiber-matrix adhesion, and fiber exfoliation phenomena were analyzed through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) to evaluate the relationship between the compounding process, mechanical responses, and morphological parameters. The PLA-based composite exhibited the best results since the Young modulus (+18%), tensile strength (+1.5%), impact (+10%), and creep (+5%) resistance were simultaneously enhanced by the addition of WB fibers, which were well dispersed and distributed in and significantly branched and interlocked with the polymer matrix. PA12- and TPU-based formulations showed a positive behavior (around +47% of the Young modulus and +40% of creep resistance) even if the not-optimal fiber-matrix adhesion and/or the poor de-fibration of WB slightly lowered the tensile strength and elongation at break. Finally, the TPE-based sample exhibited the worst performance because of the poor affinity between hydrophilic WB fibers and the hydrophobic polymer matrix.

Abstract
Turning waste products into useable resources is a necessity for the sustainable future of our planet. Such is the case with popular beverage coffee that produces solid waste in the form of spent coffee grounds (SCG). There is an opportunity to use SCG material as a cheap, sustainable, and biodegradable polymer filler that is received as waste from espresso machines. There have been relatively many studies that prove the concept of various agricultural and forestry waste, which can be integrated into modern green materials. Building upon this concept, we have selected a promising polyester poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) as a matrix owing to its bio-based and biodegradable nature. High loadings of SCG from 20 to 60 wt% were tested for optimal composition performance. Tensile, dynamic mechanical, thermal, and structural properties of the composites were examined, while their biodegradation in composting conditions was also analyzed. SCG filler showed different performance from various cellulose fiber-based composites, and properties significantly varied depending on loading. Compared to neat PBS, biodegradation occurred twice as fast for composite materials with high SGC loadings. Spent coffee waste from espresso machines was used as a renewable filler for the melt processing of sustainable poly(butylene succinate) biocomposites with enhanced exploitation properties.![]()

Abstract
Grape stalks are a lignocellulosic biomass, which is a very complex material, whose easy and profitable fractionation to obtain its basic components is still not available. Therefore, alternative ways to try and make use of grape stalks are currently being explored. In the present study, the possible use of dried and milled grape stalks as filler in bio-composites was assessed using polybutylene succinate as a basic polymer. The tensile specimens produced using 10% grape stalk powder as it is and functionalized through pre-extrusion acetylation and silylation, and silylation in situ were characterized for their structural, mechanical, thermal, morphological, and color properties. The bio-composites showed to be stiffer than the control polymer, with an increase of Young's modulus from 616 MPa to 732 MPa in the specimens obtained with acetylated grape stalk powder. This led to a potentially new method to valorize by-products of the wine industry such as grape stalks in order to recover raw materials which could prove useful in the biomaterials and bio-composites sector.

Abstract
The winemaking sector is one of the most productive worldwide, and thus it also generates large amounts of by-products with high environmental impacts. Furthermore, global market trends and government regulations promote industrial alternatives based on sustainable production processes. As a result, several studies have focused their attention on the reuse of grape by-products in the agro-food chain. Vine shoots, grape stalks, and wine lees, although produced to a lesser extent than grape pomace, have increasingly been receiving attention for their applications in the food sector, since they are a good source of functional and bioactive compounds. In this framework, our review highlights the promising results obtained by exploiting the antioxidant and/or antimicrobial activity of vine shoots, grape stalks, and wine lees or their extracts to replace the most common oenological additives and to assay the activity against food pathogens. Further, innovative functional foods and sustainable food packaging have been formulated by taking advantage of polyphenols and fiber, as well as plant bio-stimulants, in order to obtain grapes and wines with high quality characteristics. Overall, these by-products showed the potential to be recycled into the food chain as functional additives for different products and applications, supporting the sustainability of the winemaking sector.

Abstract
The plastic industry is today facing a green revolution; however, biopolymers, produced in low amounts, expensive, and food competitive do not represent an efficient solution. The use of wine waste as second-generation feedstock for the synthesis of polymer building blocks or as reinforcing fillers could represent a solution to reduce biopolymer costs and to boost the biopolymer presence in the market. The present critical review reports the state of the art of the scientific studies concerning the use of wine by-products as substrate for the synthesis of polymer building blocks and as reinforcing fillers for polymers. The review has been mainly focused on the most used bio-based and biodegradable polymers present in the market (i.e., poly(lactic acid), poly(butylene succinate), and poly(hydroxyalkanoates)). The results present in the literature have been reviewed and elaborated in order to suggest new possibilities of development based on the chemical and physical characteristics of wine by-products.

Abstract
Agro-waste reduction and reuse are among the current main social challenges. In this perspective, the present research was aimed at the complete valorisation of Garganega grape pomace by recovering bioactive phenol extracts and by testing the solid fibre extract residues in composite formulation for packaging applications. The pomace was derived from white wine production, therefore, respect to red pomace, it was promptly removed from must after pressing, and its exploitation can be particularly interesting and valuable as still rich in active compounds. Phenol extracts were obtained both via solvent-based and pressurised liquid extractions and their phytochemical compositions were compared in terms of total amount of phenols, flavonoids, flavanols, anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids, and reducing sugars. Antioxidant activity and detailed phenol profiles were also achieved. The highest phenol yield was obtained via solvent-based extraction with 75% acetone (v/v), solid/liquid ratio 1:5, 2h incubation at 50°C (77.9 gGAeq/kgDW). The fibrous solid residue of the extraction was characterized via thermogravimetric analysis and used for composite preparation by melt mixing with the renewable and biodegradable PHBV polymer through a green approach (solvent-less process). The composites resulted thermally stable at high temperatures, showing initial degradation processes only at temperatures higher than 250°C. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses were carried out to study melting and crystallization phenomena, while mechanical properties were investigated by tensile tests. The materials finally showed properties similar to those of the matrix. The bio-composites can be considered as an alternative to plain PHBV, since they are less expensive and eco-friendlier thanks to a reduced polymeric content, and they could represent a suitable way for full agro-waste exploitation.
