Abstract
The facial nerve, also known as the seventh cranial nerve, is critical in controlling the movement of the facial muscles. It is responsible for all facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, and moving the eyebrows. However, damage to this nerve can occur for a variety of reasons, including maxillofacial surgery, trauma, tumors, and infections. Facial nerve injuries can cause severe functional impairment and can lead to different degrees of facial paralysis, significantly affecting the quality of life of patients. Over the past ten years, significant progress has been made in the field of facial nerve repair. Different approaches, including direct suture, autologous nerve grafts, and tissue engineering, have been utilized for the repair of facial nerve injury. This article mainly summarizes the clinical methods and basic research progress of facial nerve repair in the past ten years.

Abstract
Considering the importance of defining the minimum number of axons between recipient and donor branches, that is, the definition of histological compatibility in distal neurotizations for the success of the procedure and the surgeon's freedom to choose individualized strategies for each patient, this systematic review was conducted to find out the most recent studies on the subject. The objective of this systematic review was to determine the importance of the number of axons and the relationship between axon counts in the donor and recipient nerves in the success of nerve transfer. A literature review was performed on five international databases: Web of Science, Scopus, Wiley (Cochrane Database), Embase, and PubMed. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed (2020 version), a guide designed to guide the elaboration of systematic literature reviews. One hundred and fifty-seven studies were found, and 23 were selected based on the eligibility criteria. The articles presented were conclusive in determining the importance of the number of axons in the success of nerve transfer. Still, the relationship between the number of axons in the donor and recipient nerves seems more relevant in the success of transfers and is not always explored by the authors. The review of the articles has provided compelling evidence that the number of axons is a critical determinant of the success of nerve transfer procedures. However, the relationship between the number of axons in the donor nerve and that in the recipient nerve appears to be even more crucial for successful transfers, a factor that is not always adequately explored by authors in the existing literature. Abstract
Background The gold standard for nerve repair is end-to-end (ETE) repair. Helicoid technique (HT) has also been previously described. In this pilot study, HT was compared to ETE and a modified helicoid weave technique (MHWT). In MHWT, recipient nerve is passed through rather than around the donor nerve, allowing for greater nerve-to-nerve interaction. Methods Eighteen adult male Lewis rats received a 2-cm sciatic nerve transection and were divided into three groups: ETE, HT, and MHWT. Five months later, electromyography (EMG), tetanic force of contraction, and wet weight of the extensor digitorum longus muscle were recorded in both the operated and non-operated sides. Nerve biopsies were taken proximal and distal to the site of the nerve graft for histological examination. Results One rat died following repair surgery and three rats died during the second surgery. The mean threshold of stimulation for ETE, HT, and MHWT were 183.3 µA, 3707.5 µA, and 656.6 µA, respectively. EMG analysis revealed that latency and duration are both affected by surgical repair type and injured or uninjured conditions. Threshold ratio (injured:non-injured) revealed pilot-level significant differences between HT and both MHWT (p = 0.069) and ETE (p = 0.082). Nerve biopsy demonstrated fascicles distally in all three groups. Conclusions While HT and MHWT function as a nerve repair technique, they are not superior to ETE. ETE remains the gold standard for nerve repair. While mean values were in favor of ETE, no statistical significance was attained.

Abstract
Selective intralaryngeal reinnervation has been shown to be effective in experimental models. This consists of independently reinnerving the adductor and abductor of laryngeal muscles of the larynx, in order to prevent any misalignment of the axonal regrowth, improve the functional recovery and tend toward reduction of synkinesis. The surgical technique remains complex. Current research focuses on simplifying and improving this technique. Olfactory ectomesenchymal stem cells (OEMSC) represent an interesting candidate for cell therapy and could be obtained from olfactory mucosa. Recent reports suggest a neuroregenerative potential in various animal models of central and peripheral nervous systems injuries. The aim of this study was dual: to develop a simple surgical model of selective reinnervation applicable in humans and to evaluate the relevance of OEMSC-based cell therapy for improving axonal guidance. Eight Fisher syngeneic rats were used to carry out the OEMSCs culture. Thirty-four Fisher syngeneic rats were operated on, divided into three groups depending on the transplanting. For all the rats, we have performed a side to end anastomosis of the vagal nerve with the inferior laryngeal nerve by interposition of a nerve graft from the left femoral nerve. Then, the first group didn't have any injection, the second group has an injection of thrombin and the third group has an injection of one million EOMSCs. Three months after surgery, laryngeal muscle activity was evaluated by videolaryngoscopy and electromyography recordings. In order to illustrate the quality of axonal regrowth, a fluorescent tracer was injected into the right posterior crico-arytenoid muscle (PCA) to reveal the cellular bodies of the motoneurons responsible for reinnervation of the PCA in the central nervous system. In our study, no improvement was found during the videolaryngological functional evaluation or with regard to the electrical activity of the PCA muscle. The cells colabelled in retrograde tracing were numerous in all groups, reflecting abnormal axonal regeneration. The interposition of a nerve graft, as side to end anastomosis between the vagus nerve and the inferior laryngeal nerve, filled with OEMSCs, does not provide better reinnervation of a hemilarynx.
